So, favorite character from each modern Disney TVA show you've seen like: Phineas and Ferb, Fish Hooks, Kick Buttowski, Motorcity, Tron Uprising, Gravity Falls, Wander Over Yonder, Penn Zero, Pickle and Peanut, Future Worm, Billy Dilley, The 7D, Star vs, Milo Murphy's Law, Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, Ducktales 2017, Big Hero 6 The Series, Big City Greens, Amphibia, Owl House, Molly McGee, and Hamster & Gretel?

Okay so given your starting point of Phineas and Ferb: (I.e. from the 2010's to present day, though I know P and F started sooner), and omitting any shows I haven't seen...: Phineas and Ferb: It's Doof. This was both easy as it was predictable. Look he's well loved by most of the internet for a reason, being a charming character who despite being evil you can kinda get why as well as easily see why he flat out retired from trying to get petty revenge with over the to pinators and his relationship with Perry was amazing. Fish Hooks: Yeah I tried to find one but I was never really that heavily into the show nor attached to any of these characters. Motorcity: Texas. I love my dumb redneck son. Gravity Falls: Stan. The Man, the myth, the legend, the wallet full of other people's money he conned or pick pocketed, who else could it be? Out of the cast, which is pretty stacked, he's the one that just comes easiest to me whenever I think about or write him and the fact he ended up being shockingly layered just made him better. Randy Cunningham: Theresa as I thought she and Randy were neat together. I don't have a huge relationship with the show but it wasn't bad at all. Wander Over Yonder: Wander himself. I just think Jack did such a godo job with him and he's such a unique character: While an obliviouslly kind unintetional trickster isn't new, the way he acted and behaved as one felt so damn nice to see. Star Vs The Forces of Evil: Tom.. just Tom. He's brilliantly written, and has an impressive character arc going from a fairly loathsome stalker.. to a kind young man who wants to be better but dosen't know how. There's a reason he got a whole retrospective out of me and still lives rent free in me and @jess-the-vampire's head Milo Murphy's Law: Milo himself. Al did a great job with him and I love his kind nature, lazzie faire attitude toward the batshit insanity around him and just genuine charm. There's a reason despite his bad luck field destroying everything around him the only two people in town who outright hate him are someone who secretly wants to be him and a thorughly unlikeable prick whose thorughly miserable. Being played by Weird Al in what is so far his only starring cartoon role dosen't hurt. Ducktales: This is a monumentally hard one but ... it has to be Donald, with Lena a close second thanks to her deep character arc and Kimiko Glenn's performance. But let's face it this is probably THE best version of Donald Duck, kind, thoughtful, a wonderful father but still the loveable mess we all know. While also somehow being the wolverine of his family's x-men. Big City Greens: Gloria, Gloria in a chealsea's day o, gloria. Relatable, hilarious, and having , as is a theme here, a good character arc, who dosen't love her? Amphibia: Sasha. I mean I love a lot of characters from that, Maddy and Marcy would also have a good shot at this, but once again it's the character arc that wins out, going from a controlling bully to a capable leader and a kind and thoughtful young woman. The Owl House: Hunter. once again you can partially blame @jess-the-vampire but frankly the character just made a splash from minute one and the more layers you peeled back on this bad sad boy, the more he became one of my faviorites, and easily the performance of zeno's career. The Ghost and MollyMcGee: Libby. I loved my mildly depressed boehemian daughter.

I'm having a weak moment. I believe cockles is real...saw the jib10 post and it was cool to see how much these two middle aged men can't contain themselves around each other. But it has been so fucking long since we have had them interact with each other just the two of them for more than 5 minutes, that I don't know.... What if they're not together anymore. What if they're just good friends now? Even worse what if they've never been more than friends with occasional hook ups? Because there's no way these two weren't fucking!

Which reminds me of a scene in the boys season 2 where homelander and stormfront are on the tv giving an interview and butcher just turns to kimiko and says, very definitively, "they're fucking!" I was like yeah!!! Exactly! That's how we KNOW Misha and Jensen fuck!

I feel like to judge any “famous” relationship and/or friendship based on how much the two people involved in it interact in front of fans is probably not the best idea. Because the truth is they are very private and the few loud moments we got from them are mostly from panels where they almost forgot where they are and ofc after many drinks of…juice. Usually they try to be extremely subtle (they fail horribly but they still try). And don’t get me wrong it does suck that we haven’t yet had a jenmish panel or something else that involves them but that doesn’t mean that they broke up (especially bc technically we have seen them break up and that was just unpleasant for everyone, so we’d definitely know if something happened). And if I’m being fully honest it would take A LOT to convince me that those two were never a thing. Hi! I dunno if this was already obvious, but I LOVED WHAT YOU DID FOR THE TRAINING CAMP SOOOO MUCH!! So I wanted to ask, what was your thought process for coming up with the challenges and characters who would feature in them, particularly the first and second ones? Love you :3

I- I am so glad you enjoyed it ;w; Especially since it’s your favorite arc in canon, it makes me happy to hear I did a well a job on it. Because I was a little unsure if I did do it justice haha ovo;;;

I don’t know if I can reconstruct the entirety of my thought-processces throughout writing the arc, but I’ll try:

Regarding the alumni I chose: a lot of Shokugeki Fanfics that take place in the future and tackle a future Trainings Camp like to have the entirety of the 92nd Generation (+ even some of the senpais) show up at it. I don’t really want to let the canon characters enter all at once in SnKimiko but rather let them drop in one by one until a much later arc (2nd year) where the adults get a bit more relevance in general. Not a lot but a bit. I did end up going for Takumi and Ikumi, because Takumi was introduced in Trainings Camp and I thought that would be a nice throwback. The other alumni were also there mostly for throwback reasons, plus I wanted to introduce the admiration that Kimiko has for Kojiro Shinomiya actually meep (as well as that little Mini-Plottwist ahdh). Rui and Shigemichi got chosen rather spontaneously but I wanted someone from the 91st or 90th Generation there (because I thought it wouldn’t make sense if it’s constantly just the 92nd Generation that gets to do all the stuff) but thought it was way too soon to get the former Elites there. Adding to that, I just like Rui quite a lot 😌. Lastly, there’s Akari Miyano who’s pretty much the Easter Egg within Trainings Camp. I don’t know if I got it across well enough but who she actually is, but well she’s not a fanmade character by me but an actual canon character from Shokugeki. She’s a One-Off in Shokugeki though and not really a name that I think is present to anyone. 

I chose Rui as first examiner because she’s a character I was always curious about and I wanted to attempt getting some more character into her. Additionally it presented me with a good opportunity to introduce her most precious son. 

Mika and Hiroshi got added to echo Takumi’s and Isami’s introduction, but I wanted to handle things a tad bit differently considering that, different to their dads, the two were already formally introduced beforehand anyway. I wanted to make Kimiko’s and Mika’s rivalry an aspect. But once again, Mika had already more time to sink in as character than Takumi did and she already loudly declared herself as Kimiko’s rival...usually with not much acknowledging from Kimiko. So in the end, I decided that the first day of Trainings Camp would be a great opportunity to have Kimiko truly realize Mika’s capability of standing toe-to-toe with her. To not just have them face off against each other so early, I thought about the whole Itsuki-situation and how Kimiko first focuses on someone else. 

Regarding the challenge with the colors of ingredients, that’s just something that came to me some morning if I remember correctly. I wanted to do something that does involve a sort-off limitation and giving the students a limit through the ingredients they can use was an idea. I then thought I should add one color that has a wide array of ingredients going for it making it the more easier choice, that being yellow (lemons, bananas, potatoes, corn ...etc.) and one color with not a lot of ingredients going for it making that one the more harder challenge to work with, that being blue. At the same time, mixing these two gives green which is another color with a wide array of ingredients (spinach, green apples, salad, pears etc.) This challenge is also supposed to showcase that both Kimiko and Mika have quite the creativity going for them while also putting them on even level, with Kimiko being able to craft a good dish out of the color that is the hardest challenge while Mika is the only one to come up with the idea to mix the two colors presented to her. 

When it comes to the 2nd challenge, that majorly started out with me wanting to introduce Kazuo. I wanted to get his introduction done in Trainings Camp because I wanted him being introduced before his sister Ran. Ran will actually get her introduction insanely soon and she’ll also become pretty active rather soon as well. So yeah, I had to get Kazuo into Trainings Camp somehow. Somewhere along the lines, I got the idea of having him team up with Kimiko while also adding Takayuki to it. Takayuki was added for three reasons: simple reoccurrence as a character, he’s with Kazuo most of the time anyway, I thought it would be fun having him team up with Kimiko as well given that they last met as opponents. Another good factor that actually dawned to me a little bit later is that all three characters have older siblings in the Elite Ten and that fact often being pointed out to them by other students. 

Given Itsuki’s introduction on Day one already, I also thought this would be a nice opportunity to hint more onto a certain antagonist by also getting Emi into the spectacle, as a slight fun challenge on the side but also as a means to introduce the “Mafia”. 

Akari Miyano’s role in Trainings Camp was something I had already thought up ever since 2016 and I thought inserting her and the plan I had for her here would be perfect. Again, she’s much of a little Easter Egg.

I don’t really remember anymore how I came up with the challenge that is presented to the trio, but I think it does have something to do with the topic of harmony in a sense. And harmony is what our trio struggles with at first, so I thought it would be a good challenge. 

Regarding how things played out in the end, that just mainly came to me in the flow while writing the thing actually: The main dish task falling onto Kazuo who has the most eccentric style of cooking out of the three and that being something that Kimiko is at first doubtful about, additionally making him cook Mika’s dish (and Mika only cooked one thing yet which was a main dish) got me to introduce his heavy crush on her; Takayuki making too extravagant appetizers because he so badly wanted to the main dish; them being sabotaged by one of the Mafia’s member but not by Akiko (despite the one hint that she’d be the one to do so in the beginning); that finally leading to them working together; Takayuki’s first mistake of making too filling appetizers turning out well in the end while Kimiko’s everlasting creativity leads to her helping out Kazuo....that just all kind off came naturally to me while writing ;w;

When it comes to the Breakfast Challenge, I quickly decided I want Kaori to shine there. She already shone on the lines on Day 1, when she impressed Takumi, but I wanted her to shine in front of Kimiko, giving that the two will have a rivalry as well. In contrast to Kimiko’s and Mika’s rivalry which is similar to Soma’s and Takumi’s in which both parties are basically equal in skill; Kimiko’s and Kaori’s rivalry is much like Soma’s and Akira’s in which one of the two legit outdos the other one at that point in time. I also figured that the Breakfast Challenge is just perfect for Kaori, as her main gimmick is to energize people which is something that people look for in a breakfast in the early morning and while she does not have her father’s sense of smell, she does still have a good understanding on the utilization of fragrance which therefore gives her a large advantage on drawing customers to her stand. 

Sorry for getting so rambly ;w; I hope it wasn’t all too much all over the place (it probably was) and that I worded things at least a little decently....meep.

The 5 times master monk Guan talked to the dragons about  Chase and the one time he talked to Chase

1)Omi

Omi is the start of it, as he normally starts most things, Master Monk Guan is visiting with Master Fung, since the Heylin King has returned. They’re talking about their current enemies when Chase is brought up and Omi instantly cuts in

“Chase Young is still an honourable warrior and I believe there is still good in him!”

The other 4 dragons groan in a long suffering tone as if this is a conversation they have heard many times before as Master Fung sighs.

Guan suddenly felt it hard to swallow a lump in his throat, he hasn’t ever entertained the idea of Chare being anything other than evil for centuries, because that’s what he is he betrayed them (me) left us (me) all for a selfish ideal of immortality (was that really why? Was that worth it)

“I am afraid I do not agree with you Young Monk” Guan says firmly before trying to change the subject, because there is nothing more to talk about Chase is evil he is their enemy that is an unchangeable fact a certainty, there is no use trying to change the unchangeable (he gave up on that so long ago).

“I am sorry Master Monk Guan but I disagree with you disagreement!” Omi cut in firmly staring up with stubborn determination, a pigheadedness that reminded him a lot of Dashi.

Guan sighed and looked down at him “Omi! Chase Young is by no means honourable any honour he shows is a trick he most likely used it to gain your trust, most likely so he could trick you as he did there is no good in him” he said sharply

Omi’s look of determination just increased “I am well aware Chase Young tricked me however he does have honour he returned your staff after your fight! He has helped us many times before and”

“He used cheap tricks in that fight and only gave the spear back to save himself” Guan snapped “ Omi he would only help you if it was in his self interest he is not”

“THERE IS GOOD IN HIM!” Omi snapped eyes filled with such fire for being a dragon of water…the dragon of water like Chase once was “HE SACRIFCED HIMSELF FOR US IN THE OTHER WORLD! HE IS NOT PURE EVIL IN THAT WORLD YOU WERE EVIL! YOU DRANK THE SOUP! BUT YOU ARE NOT EVIL! YOU ARE BEING HYPOTECTICAL!”

The was a tense silence all around the other dragons and Omi turned on his heel storming off with a pout, the tense air didn’t stop until Dojo awkwardly cleared his throat

“…I think he meant hypocritical”

 2) Raimundo

While at the temple Guan has been trying to help Raimundo with his new leadership role, though he is not sure how much he is helping Dashi had been they’re leader….even though a lot of the time that was not a good thing remember some of the situations they got into (don’t think don’t remember because in all his memories he sees him as he once was and he can’t) Raimundo at least seems thankful for the help.

“Omi would probably be best to talk about this…but” the new dragon of the wind stopped glancing at him awkwardly “I don’t know if he’ll um”

“he does not want to talk to me” Guan finished, it had been a few days since the meeting turned scream filled debate about Chase, since that incident Omi had been avoiding him, where before he had eagerly flowed him around akin to puppy as the other dragons had pointed out “…he seems rather adamant in his…options of Chase” Guan trailed off not sure what to say

Raimundo let out a small laugh “well that’s 1 way to put it yeah little dude always gets like that with Chase…I mean the whole time travel alternate realities thing came from him trying to get Chase not to turn evil which of course didn’t work out”

Guan gave a small nod he was honestly surprised how adamant the young dragon was “Raimundo…what is your opinion on Chase Young?”

He asked it on a whim more than anything else really

The dragon of wind blinked owlishly before frowning, seeming to be giving the question a lot of thought…that was different Raimundo seemed to normally be quite sure of his opinions and tell you them very quickly and firmly exactly what he thought.

“I…I mean he’s defiantly EVIL like really evil…he really messed Omi up with the whole Chi thing…and trying to eat Dojo and just generally being a totally jerk…but he also has helped us a lot and he dose keep his word…though he dose twist those words around” Raimundo crossed him arms staring up “…Omi really looks up to him though and I mean little guy always sees the good in everyone…though he’s way better at it now but still...with Chase he’s always so sure of himself that the guy is good deep down even when he’s being urgh I don’t know Jack Spicer and Chase Young he’s always so such those 2 are really good even when they betray him and…I mean but” Guan watched as the boy hung his head frowning intently at the ground “but…with Chase he really did help us in that other time line he was a really good guy…I honestly dude I don’t know what to think of him” he gave a small shrug and sigh “sorry”

Guan just nodded and frowned, it was strange…that this question was so hard; it was a simple fact and unchangeable certainty…right?

 3) Clay

The new dragon of earth remind Guan most of himself quite and calm mostly, the most calm rock surrounded by insanity, like now when the 2 of them calmly stood watching the other 3 dragons both spar and argue at the same time, this time not about Chase.

(Luckily that argument had been resolved, with Raimundo and Dojo pulling Omi towards him as Omi bowed and said, rather reluctantly “I apologise for being rude Master Monk Guan”

“that is alright Young one you are rather strong in your convictions”

“but you still believe that”

“OK little dude lets go come on”

The conversation ended with Raimundo dragging Omi away as the little monk looked ready to begin the argument again)

This argument however, was based around the monk’s young enemy Jack Spicer. Apparently they has seen their young enemy had been with the Heylin king at their last showdown, Omi was still defending the goodness of the their young enemy

(‘he does not want to help he let us win the showdown!’

‘OMI Spicer lost cause he’s a klutz’

‘no Raimundo he is being condensed’

‘..wha?’

‘he means coerced Rai’)

Guan observed the other dragons for a few moments before asking “what is your opinion dragon of earth?”

“Spicer’s a varmint” Clay said before amending himself “but he’s not a good varmint…he seems really bad at being bad…but I dunno if that makes him good…he’s just ain’t as bad as the other varmint’s we gotta deal with”

Guan nodded and is going to leave it at that, but it’s a whim or maybe it’s because of how similar Clay seems to him he can’t help himself as he asks “what do you think about Chase?”

This seems to shock the young dragon who stands there with his mouth open until he finds his voice “…a varmint…a bad varmint but as in good at being bad, really good at being bad he’s dangerous and he’s caused a whole heap of trouble for all of use, he’s one of the worst enemies we’ve faced” Clay fiddles with the rim of his hat “but..” that seems to be the thing Guan realises there always seems to be a but “he has helped us, he has some honour and Omi little guy really looks up to him…and he’s protected Omi before…he was…it that other time line he wasn’t a varmint” Clay finishes

Guan stares down at the ground…there seems to always be a but, an uncertainly in a certainty…he’s not too sure what to think of that.

 4)Kimiko

It is strange how some of the new dragons are similar to the previous dragons, Raimondo’s very similar to Dashi and Omi…is similar to his predecessor in many ways, which both worries Guan and makes him smile. While Clay and Wuya have no similarities and well…it is the same for him and Kimiko.

The young dragon of fire is very different from himself, other than perhaps their temper (he remembers multiple comments on his fiery temper from Daishi and…)

Training Kimiko is rather difficult not because she is not a good or skilled student, she is amazingly skilled and defiantly a smart fighter but because they are very different whereas he would mediate first and focus on the practical Kimiko seems constantly ready to learn the practical, while Guan was a calm and controlled candle flame Kimiko is the raging wildfire.

Which is why he is not surprised as he feels Kimiko shift next to him in their attempted mediation, the Heylin king is planning something and Guan will not allow them to be unprepared.

“Kimiko mediation is” Guan began being cut off by a sigh

“I know I’m sorry it’s just we’ve been doing this for hours! Can we have a break…food, video games, just talk anything please!” she sighed out

Guan was about to remind her that mediation needs to be silent but…he is curious and asks “what is your opinion on Chase Young?”

Kimiko stared at him before smirking a bit “well I was wondering when you’d ask me” at his confused expression she just smiled wider “what you think I didn’t know you’d asked Clay and Rai?” Guan felt his mouth move wordlessly he is not sure how to respond to that at all...he has only been asking on a whim a mere curiosity that is all…yes that is all this is.

“Sorry to disappoint you but I’m on the fence like the others I mean Chase is EVIL but now I’m not sure if he’s EVIL you know?” Guan wordlessly shook his head and the new dragon of fire’s face contorted in a look of deep thought “ok so he’s done the whole take over the world corrupt good guys steal the Wu change warriors into cats kind of evil but… he’s kind of not like EVIL…I mean he was good he was really good still when we were in the alternate time” she flopped onto her back “it’s weird I’m not sure how to explain but he’s…I’m pretty sure he’s not EVIL just EVIL”

Guan frowned he didn’t understand evil was evil, good was good, Heylin was Heylin, Xiaolin was Xiaolin that was it….Chase was evil that it was a certainty a fact.

“start meditating again” he said ignoring the long groan from the dragon of fire.

He didn’t get any meditation done.

 5) Jack

A lot has happened since Guan was last at the temple, the young dragons were almost killed by the Heylin King, they’d been saved y their young enemy Jack Spicer…who had been revealed to be the dragon of metal…who had now joined them on.

Much to the utter joy of Omi, the young dragon was so excited to tell him eyes wide and basically vibrating with excitement, their previous disagreement seemingly forgotten in the sheer joy Omi felt with having Spicer join them, whereas the previous enemy of the dragons was awkward and seemed to still feel out of place, even with the aforementioned dragon of water hanging off of his shoulders.

Guan is…he has been thinking a lot about many things recently ok one thing…one person and seeing an enemy turn xiaolin dragon he is…it’s strange

He finds the newest dragon in the vault pieces of mechanics thrown around and the boy I frowning as he mumbles something about the security being bad and seriously no wonder I could break in here so many times…why do we not have more motion sensors seriously.

“dragon of metal” Guan addressed him, causing the boy to let out a shrill shriek jumping nearly out of his skin spinning around with wide eyes

“Oh hi master monk man …AH I am not stealing anything trying to make it so they’ll be less Wu stealing look nit evil anymore ok so um yeah” the boy rambled

“I am aware young dragon Master Fung told me as much” he said and the poor boy looked even more awkward and embarrassed

The 2 were in a very strained silence for what felt like ages, Guan felt uncomfortable but…he wanted to ask, he felt like he needed to it wasn’t a whim it was…he just wanted to know.

“Young dragon may I ask you…what is your opinion on Chase Young?” he asked and was met with silence and a confused look

“About Chase?” he asked

Guan shifted uncomfortable and cleared his throat “yes your opinion about…where he stands …young Omi seems convinced adamantly so that there is good I him but I…” he trailed off not actually sure how to finish that statement anymore.

Jack nodded “oh… he’s the most amazing Heylin warrior ever I mean defiantly the coolest” he frowned for a moment “ but he’s…not as evil as Hannibal not really…he’s way more straight forward even when he’s trying to trick you” He twirled the tool in his hands looking down at it “…and he defiantly doesn’t like the ‘king’ he was…he didn’t like how he was doing things that for sure…I clearly wasn’t the only one uncomfortable when he was planning stuff” Guan started at him because that’s…that’s news “defiantly didn’t want to kill the monks…I kind of think if I hadn’t broken the Wu he would have” Jack suddenly smiled “guess he likes the cheeseball to, he kind of makes you like him like that”

“…cheeseball?” Guan titled his head

“um Omi sorry” Jack corrected still smiling “y’know if Omi thinks that he’s still a good guy…then I think he’s right”

“you do?” he felt himself ask

Jack grinned “yeah he seems to have a good sense with these things”

Guan looked at the new dragon of metal and realised, he couldn’t actually disagree.

  +1) Chase

It has been a very eventful few weeks, the king is dead after sealing away Chase’s Xiaolin side, that was still there…even after everything he had been there, after that what had been left had been a monster is putting it lightly. The world had been plunged into darkness and it had ended up with the 5 dragons and himself travelling through new levels of the yin yang world to pull out Chase’s Xiaolin side…which had involved the dragons seeing some of Chases memories…memories of their time as the previous dragons and memories of them (the reactions he remembers are Raimundo and Kimiko’s twin cries of called it! and Omi’s excited squeal that nearly broke his ear drums)

In the end they’d brought that side back and Chase was back to Chase, not his Chase (or at least not the Chase he’d thought of as his for so many years)but…

Their all at the remains of Chase’s once home, destroyed in the rampage now only rubble, and he’s looking over at his …he doesn’t know what to call him now but Kimiko just smiles happily nudges him forward and says cheerfully “we’ll leave you both to it I think you guys need to have a talk” before shooting off further into the rumble through he’s pretty sure that they’re all still listening.

“I am not sure what there is to say” Chase says arms folded and dose he really think things are going to fall back to how they were before? Truly? How could he now he knows that the good in him is still there…though that is what happened before Chase betrayed them and left and …Guan never looked never searched he just accepted that it was a certainty and he hadn’t searched and hadn’t fought.

He thinks back now about what would have happened if he had.

“I am sorry” he blurts out and Chase stares at him clearly not expecting that before his expression grows dark

“If you are pitying me or feeling sentimental over old buried memories then do not and leave” he began to turn away

“I could never bury those memories they were always there even when I didn’t want them to be” he admitted because he’s done with lying to himself he’s going to be honest “I am sorry because I never looked for the good never tried to see more than you presented I didn’t see that you are not evil”

“I am evil” Chase cut in before glancing away “…at least I am in no way Xiaolin Guan I am”

“Evil but not evil” Guan suggesting smiling because he gets it now, thought from the contorted frown on Chase’s face he doesn’t

“…I was going to say neutral I have no interest in being Xiaolin and…” he purposefully stopped and Guan wonders just how hard it is for him to say this

“you don’t want to be Heylin either” he finished for him, because he needed to hear this Chase just gave him a look and Guan couldn’t stop the smile because that look that stance all of it, it was his Chase.

How long had he been there? Hidden beneath a show and a persona and all that show? he knew it wasn’t entirely his Chase, his Chase was older, wiser, one who had seen darkness one who had caused darkness but still it was him.

“come with us” he blurts out, because with Chase his brain to mouth filter had always been non-existent

The flat look Chase gave him was also familiar “did you not hear what I just said I’m not Xiaolin anymore I never will be”

“I know you are now a neutral party” he said beaming “as a neutral party you could theoretically assist either side and there are 5 young dragons in need of training” he let out a sly smirk because he knows his Chase “I’m pretty sure the new dragon of water could use some training from the previous dragon”

Chase frowned but he can see he wants to; he really cares for the young dragon, though he glances back up at him “Is…that the only reason?”

“no” he admitted because he’s not lying at all not anymore not now and not to him “I…Chase I…” he wants to be honest but apparently his mouth won’t work so he walks forward and leans in, memories of so many previous times flash behind his eyes they all stop when chase leans forward.

It’s their first kiss in nearly a thousand years, it feels like water to a drowning man, it feels right, a true certainty.

The 2 move back and they’re both smiling, and their ears are ringing, turning they see Omi squealing in pure joy running towards them and running in circles around them, looking in the direction they saw the other 4 dragons crying and smiling.

Guan watches as Chase is knocked away from him as Omi hugs him smiling widely and chattering up at Chase so fast that he doubts he can understand anything.

Guan smiles he is so happy he was wrong.

They discover the institution serves as a testing ground, where reluctant subjects are being injected with Compound-V… to varying results. To further complicate matters, former Seven member Lamplighter (Shawn Ashmore) had been recruited to keep the patients in line – or roast the unruly alive with his fiery powers. And, as it turns out, Frenchie and Lamplighter shared a shocking history together.

Boyd spent years as an editor on such high-profile shows as Lost, The Killing, and Bates Motel before successfully pivoting to directing on Bates Motel, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Flash, This is Us, and The Boys. Currently in pre-production on The Boys’ final two episodes of season 3, Boyd spoke to Den of Geek about season 2’s wildest episode, the series sex and violence, and what’s in store for season 3.

Den of Geek: When you received the script for “The Bloody Doors Off”, what was it about this episode that spoke to you?

Sarah Boyd: I’m not sure it spoke to me, but I got excited about the Sage Grove craziness, and the tension and action in there, and then the reveal of Lamplighter. I was really looking forward to introducing and creating a new character that the audience hadn’t seen before. I didn’t know who they were thinking of casting at first. Then I saw Shawn Ashmore’s audition tape. That’s when I first got super-excited.

How comfortable were you with the episode being so special effects-heavy?

Special effects and VFX, I’ve done both. And as a longtime editor, I’ve worked on lots of shows with visual effects and special effects. The action stuff was pretty comfortable for me. It involved a lot of prep. It takes a lot of time and forethought to orchestrate how you are going to shoot it, how you are going to make it look real. Of course, it’s not real, so how are you going to make it real? And when the stunts are happening, how are they going to be done faithfully? What’s the best angle to film them from? This show has a lot of gore, a lot of action and a lot of sex. These are all things that need to be carefully orchestrated and done to make sure everyone is comfortable and safe. Sage Grove was one example of where we knew we had a lot to do, so we had very jam-packed days at the Sage Grove Institution. 

Taking into consideration the action and sex, were there any particular sequences that required extra discussion with the cast or producers? 

We always have meetings with actors, individually and then together, when there’s going to be an intimate scene. For example, the scene with Homelander and Stormfront in the alley at the beginning of the episode… It’s not particularly graphic in terms of how much of their bodies you see, but anytime there’s enough people insinuating sex, you have a discussion with each person. Then there’s practical things like, “When you wear the super-suit, it’s hard enough to take off your pants if you don’t take off your boots.” It’s like, “OK, we have to think about this.” There’s a certain amount of conversation that goes into that. But we talk not only about logistics, but about the characters’ emotions. I wanted to make it clear that it was a scene where they were really having a connection and that it was an emotional thing. It wasn’t just graphic, and it wasn’t just empty sex or empty violence. It was all part of their commonality that brings these characters together.

The Boys is known for its extremes. How did you approach the bloody component with Homelander crushing a man’s face in?

The Boys: Antony Starr Believes Homelander is Misunderstood

We always have prep conversations about how we are going to shoot something. Is he going to smoosh a dummy or a prosthetic imitation of a person? Is he going to start pushing into a real person’s face and then we cut, and then VFX takes over? You go over different angles. In that particular scene, we were prepared to do a prosthetic, but we decided it would be better and more effective to what we needed to get done if we put a whole bunch of dots on the actor and then let VFX take over. Also, the actor had to get smooshed and then fall. When a dummy falls, it looks like a dummy falling. Whereas, when an actor falls, even if he’s missing a head, everything else about him would be himself. It was more effective for the actor and for us to change his head in postproduction. 

For the Sage Grove segment, production took place in an abandoned asylum. In what ways did filming on location create an atmosphere and vibe for the episode?

It was an amazing, but also disturbing, location. It really did have the vestiges of what it used to be. It used to be a hospital for the criminally insane. It had a very musky old smell to it. We had to air a lot of those hallways, just so we could tolerate being in them. Then, of course, the production designer and team had to create a lot of specific things in those rooms. Those rooms were empty, and we had to fill them up. But the location was inherently right for what we were looking for. It had a labyrinthian layout. There were different looks in each hallway, in terms of the color scheme or whether it had carpeting on the floor. It was large, but it felt even larger. 

And there was so much extra stuff we had to film for the security cameras. We ended up having a second unit working one of the days of that same week, just to get those extra bits. They weren’t just random. We carefully planned them. There’s little bits of people running and screaming and going down the hallways, running down the hallways and getting attacked. There’s even a little Easter egg with Love Sausage grabbing someone and pulling them by the leg down the hall. Each of those take a while to set up. 

There’s a brief scene outside where Butcher has Starlight in his line of fire. There’s a certain look in his eyes. In your mind, how close was he to killing her?

There’s always that tension between Butcher and Starlight. There’s no love lost there. It’s interesting because it puts Butcher in a position. Hughie likes Starlight so much. Butcher is conflicted there. I love that moment and the payoff as soon as Starlight gets back to the van, when they have it out and she’s like, “What’s your problem with me?” It’s an example of Butcher’s pickle. He needs Starlight, but doesn’t like her. 

You mentioned Lamplighter earlier. What were some of the challenges of establishing the aesthetic of his fiery powers and how they would manifest?

Shawn and I had a bunch of Facetime conversations, where he would try different things. He got a Zippo lighter and practiced and became really comfortable with that. That was a big aspect to his character. It had to become second nature. There are over 50 ways to light a Zippo lighter. There are all these tricks. There’s actually a lot of videos about tricky ways to light your Zippo lighter. There were a few we loved, and we were like, “This is great. Let’s show it to Eric (Kripke).” Eric was like, “It can’t be too tricky.” At the end of the day, we had a couple of pitches that were more complicated. We wanted to make it different from other flame-throwing characters, which he is, but we wanted to make it wildly different, and Eric wanted it to be more grounded. We came to a happy medium.       

We had concept art from visual effects. They present lots of drawings and options. Is it going to look like a plume? Is it going to be a straight shot? Is it going to be similar to a laser? We had lots and lots of conversations and choices there.

Cindy knows how to make an entrance. The telekinetic Sage Grove patient made an orderly explode. Take us behind the scenes of pulling that off…

In terms of the splat and the crunches, again, it was a conversation and an evolution of ideas pitched and then coming to an agreement of what it should be. The idea is she doesn’t have to do much with her own body. She just has to bend her fingers in to make multiple metal doors crunch and fall. The smaller little things are more chilling than some giant movement on her body. That was an example of multiple layers. There was an element of her, an element of green screen and an element of gore. 

What was it like for you to get to explore Frenchie’s backstory and his friction with Lamplighter?

It was great. Tomer took it really seriously and we dug in together. It was excellent. I enjoy those flashback scenes. I like, in any story, when you learn about the past, as long as the flashbacks aren’t too early. There’s a sweet spot for when you want to introduce a flashback and it has to be when you are curious. It can’t be when you don’t care. The show waited just the right amount of time. “What’s the deal? What happened? What made Frenchie so haunted?” To get a glimpse of the good old days, when Frenchie was robbing banks and killing Supes… And, then when everything took a turn for the worse in regard to their drug use and Frenchie getting caught and joining forces with Mallory, just finding out how those things happened is very satisfying for an audience.

Was there anything in the script that didn’t make it to the small screen?

The only thing I can think of is this tiny scene, which was at the end. Annie is in a car, having left Hughie and Butcher at the hospital. What she is doing is driving to see her mom, I guess, but you don’t know that. So, she’s driving and looking conflicted about having left and where she’s going and how she feels about what she’s becoming. It was a lovely little scene and Erin did a great job with it.

You are currently in post-production for the final two episodes in season 3. What drew you in about the script for the finale?

It’s always exciting to get the actual script you are going to be working on. But, in order to understand my script, I had to get all the scripts before it. I got all the scripts in a big clump and just tore through them. I was so excited. It’s always amazing when a season that you already like, such as season 2, was as good if not better than the first season. And now, the same thing has happened again with season 3. How do they keep doing it? How do they keep finding the stories that are exciting and surprising you with unexpected things and irreverent moments and smart political satire?

In what way do you approach directing a finale differently than a regular episode?

No matter what episode you are directing, you try to tell that story as captivatingly as you can. The stakes are high for the finale, so generally they pull out all the stops. There’s just more work to do. I don’t know if it’s any different than any other episode, because you try to make every episode you work on as good as it can be.

Maybe one thing that’s different about the finale is these are going to be the images you leave fans with, and for quite some time. So, you want to do right by each character and leave them in a place where you understand where they are at, whether that’s a good place or a bad place, depending on what’s happening. It’s just making sure everyone has their moments.   

Jensen Ackles joined the cast as Soldier Boy. What’s impressed you about the Supernatural actor?

Jensen is fantastic. I’ve already met with him a couple of times, just to talk about his character, and get to know each other. He seems extremely kind and hardworking and thoughtful and is having a great time with his character. That kind of enthusiasm is contagious and I’m looking forward to working with him.

5. Is there any significance behind their hair color? 

I wanted his big sister to be the blonde one, which made me give Takayuki his purple hair almost automatically. I also thought it suits him more since he’s the more serious one out of the Hojo-siblings anyway. Also, given that he was introduced and described before Suzume was, I think his surname plus his hair color very quickly truly established him as Miyoko’s son. 

6. Is there any significance behind their eye color? 

He got Miyoko’s hair color which meant, I would give him Terunori’s eye color and I kind off like the combination a lot. 

7. Is there any significance behind their height? 

ashdAHDFJFGGF Takayuki is 1.57 m by the way and weLP. Making Takayuki a shortie was originally mostly my major way of establishing who his father is ahdhd as Terunori is definitely the most notable, male character in Shokugeki who is short. So I thought introducing a purple-haired, very short male + Terunori’s brown eyes would quickly give away that he’s Terunori’s and Miyoko’s son.

Also….I want to make my height-jokes. Lots and lots of height-jokes. Which also comes with another plus that Takayuki is very entertaining when angry so giving him a topic he’s especially sensitive about, is also just a good add-on for comedy. 

15. What is something about your OC can make you laugh?

His outbreaks of anger mostly. Hotheads are fun to draw and to write for me and Takayuki is a goldmine in that regard. It’s also a lot of fun when you pair a hothead with a calmer, more laidback character which is a purpose that both Suzume and Kazuo can fulfill. 

16. What is something about your OC can make you cry? 

He gets compared to Suzume quite a lot and people tend to point out that his achievements thus far are not as grand as Suzume’s back when she was his age. Also many students of Totsuki just see him as Suzume’s little brother and nothing else. 

17. Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?

He made something very spicy again in Trainings Camp, despite him learning in his Shokugeki against Kimiko that he shouldn’t be only focused on that. And he won’t be anymore, but meep…I could have portrayed that a lot, a lot, a lot better in Trainings Camp. (Autumn Election Premlins, I won’t fail you I hope)

18. What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC? 

He plays World of Warcraft (a game that me, Lea, barely knows anything about because she does not like Multiplayer-Anything but YEET). He plays a Pandaren and his favorite expansion is “Mists of Pandaria” because of course it is (it’s also my favorite expansion but its kinda also the only one I watched a Let’s Play of so)

Faction-wise, I honestly don’t know. I can very well see him play for the Alliance as well as the Horde, tbqh. So I still gotta think about that. 

19. What is your favorite fact about your OC?

What a loyal and good friend he can be. He can be hard to befriend, as his temper and his often way too quick judgement do make him bit of a jerk sometimes but he’s not in anyway truly ill-intended. And usually with Kazuo, Takayuki’s protectiveness, loyalty and care show the best. The moment you attack Kazuo, you’ll be attacked back by Takayuki. Plus, while he does roll his eyes a lot at Kazuo’s overblown romantic ideas, he does still attempt to fulfill the role as wingman and genuinely hopes his best buddy will get with Mika, even if Takayuki does not particularly like her at first.

5. Is there any significance behind their hair color?

Mika is a fanchild where I did not really have two options like with all the others ahshd With her it was clear that she was going to be blonde, given that both Takumi and Ikumi are. All what it really came down to was which shade of blonde it will be and it became Ikumi’s blonde because I decided for Takumi’s eye color for Mika’s eyes. 

6. Is there any significance behind their eye color?

Now here I had a real choice: blue or green. Though I really didn’t think all too long about this question and rather quickly decided on Takumi’s blue eyes. A. I think its a very beautiful shade of blue, B. Hiroshi had already been designed and I liked to connect the two Aldini cousins through their similar eye-colors much like their brothers were before them. 

7. Is there any significance behind their height?

Mika is 1.65 m (taller than her mom at her age) tall. Out of the three main girls (the others being Kimiko, ofc, and Kaori) it makes her the tallest as Kimiko is 1.63 m and Kaori is 1.61 m. I mean, given that its just centimeters we’re talking about here, its not really all that noticeable but I still like the idea of Mika being the tallest of the three ovo. Their moms have a similar height-relationship btw, with Ikumi being the tallest out of Ikumi, Erina and Hisako and Hisako being the shortest one. 

15. What is something about your OC can make you laugh?

Mainly what also made me laugh mostly about her father. Just the constant challenges towards Kimiko and how easily embarrassed she can be when something is not going according her plan, or when Hiroshi calmly sets her straight. 

Her temper is also fun, but I think I established by now that I generally find hot temper fun. 

16. What is something about your OC can make you cry?

The fact that I can’t decide on an end game for her and both of their options have their fans. 

Her crush on Hiraku, because Mika deserves better. Also I won’t treat this unrequited crush as some joke to laugh about like poor Ikumi’s crush on Soma was constantly portrayed. There will be some comedic moments related to her crush sure, but they won’t be about the fact that Hiraku does not feel the same way but rather Mika’s own attempts of keeping it a secret at all cost in front of people who clearly know. (I hope that makes sense)

17. Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?

The love-triangle kind off a little bit ahshDHD Because now I can’t decide of who will actually be her end game. 

Think is, I initially had settled with an option, but then the other option started gaining fans as well and now I am just like ovo;;; Because I honestly also like both. 

18. What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?

The Italian Cuisine RS basically runs after her, begging her to join but she stays faithful to the Don RS. 

19. What is your favorite fact about your OC?

I think how strong and soft she is at the same time. She’s fiery, confident and battle-hearted and she will not back away from any challenge presented to her. Mika truly has spine. When it comes to the matters of heart, she’s insanely girly in her ideas about it while also very shy about it at the same time. And I find that side of her very endearing, even though it can be a factor that can hurt her. Combined with her strength, she will stand up again.
