Somedays make you go down the rabbit hole of nostalgia!

Some old memories of Saraswati Puja.

I woke up and disjointly watched Subhy (my nephew) go to school. What perturbed me, was not that he was going to school, but he was going to school in uniform and with bag. When I asked Nani (elder sister in Odia) why he is going to school with books on Saraswati Puja, she informed me he didn't have a holiday today.

I had never felt the ache of leaving home much more than that moment. It was the realisation that things are going to different from now on and I couldn't fall back into the safety net of familiarity from now on.

If I had been at home, I would have helped Puchu in getting ready for her school in new dress. Then we would have offered pushpanjali to the brass idol of Goddess Saraswati in our puja room. We would have placed her books and new pencils and my new pens in front of Maa for blessing. She would have gone to school for puja and I would have met my friends.

This has always been my ritual for Saraswati and Ganesh Puja. Before Puchu's birth, I used to do this alone. I love buying new pens and keeping them near the Deities and using them for the whole year. I have started this ritual when I was in school myself. Another perk of my ritual was that I didn't have to study until the books are kept in front of Maa.

Now Puchu follows my habits. But this year, I couldn't complete my ritual. I just lit a diya in front of Maa.

With the memory of the discontinued ritual, also came the memory of those school days when I used to go to the school and tuition and celebrate Saraswati Puja. That anxious waiting for the priest's arrival as they were always late. They used to do puja at many places after all. Then the yearning for the Homa Yajna to complete soon so that we could offer pushpanjali and break coconuts. It was a competition to see who could break a coconut in a single blow. First we would get delicious boodi Sev prasad and there would be a feast later. The teachers would keep reminding us not to waste any food. The icing on the cake was the superstition that if you study on Saraswati Puja, you would turn into a fool, that we used to take full advantage of.

Then, in college, daunting as well as liberating realisation that we had to organise the Puja on our own without any help or intervention from faculty. The whole process of preparing a budget, collecting contributions from all the students, purchasing puja samagri and decoration materials, planning the feast, decorating the hall with friends and then finally making sure everything goes well on the day of the Puja.

Sometimes, I wish to go back to those simpler times, when everything was fun and joyful. But of course, I can't as I don't have time travel machine. So I distracted myself with the photos sent by my cousins of Puja at their college. I am glad, they are enjoying this phase of their life and making beautiful memories.

In the temple itself, Kolhapur artists Rajaram Bapuso Patil, Pramod Lohar, and Anil Sutar are constructing Singh Jharokha. Singh Jharokha will resemble a bridge. In Nij Mandir, two Gajraj will be put on either side of the silver leaf. Nija Mandir contains 8 pillars, 1 large and 4 little silver domes, 2 large and 4 medium urns, and 19 small urns.

   3. MAA UMIYA DHAM, NEAR OUTER RING ROAD

The Sati was created by the Shiv element during the creation of the universe. Sati was born in Daksh Prajapati's residence. Lord Shiva was her husband. Daksha planned a large Yagna but did not invite Shiva out of malice. Sati went to her father's Yagna despite not being invited. Sati and Lord Shiva were humiliated once more, and she couldn't take it any longer, so she leaped into the Yagna pyre and embraced fire. Lord Shiva became enraged and began the Tandav, carrying Sati's body on his shoulders. The entire planet shook and trembled in fear. Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati's body into 51 pieces to preserve the world, and a Shaktipeeth was formed wherever these pieces fell.

Sati had hoped to marry Lord Shiva in the next birth before falling into the Yagna pyre. Lord Shiva became a hermit after Sati's death. The planet was being terrorized by the Tarkasur demon. He received the boon from Brahmaji that he could only be killed by Shiva's son. Lord Shiva is getting ready to remarry, thanks to the gods. Sati gave birth to her second child at Maina and Himalayas' home and became known as Parvati-Uma. She married Shiva after a long period of intense meditation. Kartik, their son, annihilated Tarkasur.

   4.    GRUHLAXMI AMBABAI TEMPLE, SEMINARY HILLS

Gods such as Mahabali Hanuman, Shri Gruheshwara (Shiva), Shri Prachand Kaali, Shri Kaal Bhairava, Shri Mangal Chandi Devi, and Shri Shani Deva have their abodes at this temple.

       5.    BHAWANI MATA MANDIR, PARDI

Shri Bhavani Mata Mandir is located 10 kilometers east of Nagpur, in Pardi village on the Punapur road. This ancient and largest temple is historically significant, and it is stated that Mataji's idol is swayambhu (self-evolved) and performs marvels for followers.

 Navaratri is celebrated here with passion, and a significant number of devotees flock here during that time to seek the blessings of Bhavani Mata.

Her worship is very popular in many parts of West Bengal.According to some legends, it is believed that after the defeat of Mahishasura, the other deities started to think that no one is more powerful than them. Dressed in red, Maa Jagadhatri appeared as a four-armed Goddess, holding a conch, bow, chakra and arrow in her hands and challenged the deities to lift a blade of grass. Unable to lift it, the deities realized the power and might of the Goddess and apologized for cultivating ego. In the idol of Maa Jagadhatri, lion thrashing the elephant signifies the ego of deities crushed by her.

'Pet-friendly' themed Durga Puja organised by North Kolkata's Bidhan Sarani Atlas Club

Sep 19, 2022 02:20 IST Kolkata (West Bengal) , September 19 (Always First): As the festival of Durga Puja is nearing, people are coming ahead with one creative idea after the other. A similar example was seen in North Kolkata's Bidhan Sarani Atlas Club which came up with the first of its kind 'Pet-friendly' Puja Pandal. In the idol, the 'Asur' was replaced by two street dogs who were seen praying for shelter before Maa Durga, showcasing the theme of 'Shelter for pets'. Also, the 'Asur' has been depicted riding a motorcycle and crushing the small puppies under its wheel. It represents those people, who hate pets and torture street dogs.

The Secretary of Bidhan Sarani Atlas Club, Biswajit Ghosh told ANI, how they decided to go on with this theme despite fearing controversy. "We know that we have to face controversy over the idol but earlier the traditional Durga Idol used to have ten hands but now it has also changed. This social issue is important to show how street dogs are being treated. This year we have received the Cultural Heritage Award from UNESCO," said secretary Biswajit Ghosh. The 10-day festival marks the worship of Goddess Durga. Months before the festival, artisanal workshops sculpt idols of Durga and her children (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik and Ganesh) using unfired clay. The festival marks its beginning on the day of Mahalaya when the ritual of 'pran pratistha' is done by painting the eyes of the goddess idol. Sasthi, Saptami, Ashtami...every day the festival has its own significance and set of rituals. The celebrations culminate on the tenth day known as Vijaya Dashami when the idols are immersed in water bodies from where the clay was sourced. This year Durga Puja begins on October 1 with Maha Shashti and will end on October 5 with Maha Dasami. The significance of Durga Puja goes beyond religion and is revered as the celebration of compassion, brotherhood, humanity, art and culture.
