The reason why something like this would make her so emotional is that she’s always pictured herself as less beautiful after she had her children. Not because of her children themselves, but because of the circumstances in which they were conceived and the stigma following young, unmarried mothers on her planet.

She’s always struggled with her image, but she has gotten better over time. She sees certain parts of herself as “less beautiful” than others because of past trauma.

So someone calling her beautiful in this context would really, really mean a lot to her. Especially since they were being genuine, and not just to make her feel better about herself.
