The reason is layered. That's not to say that brides have only been wearing white since. Brigitte Bardot wore a pink gingham dress, complete with lace-trimmed sleeves and a tea-length skirt, in 1959, and Elizabeth Taylor only wore white to two of her eight weddings. More recently, Keira Knightley wore a pale gray Chanel dress for her 2013 nuptials, Sarah Jessica Parker wore a black ballgown in 1997, and Julianne Moore wore lavender Prada in 2003. Even today, many different cultures wear different colors. In China and India, for example, red dresses are worn as a symbol of good luck and success. Traditional Nigerian brides veer towards brightly colored, elaborately accessorized dresses, and wedding dresses in Ghana vary from couple to couple, with each family uses its own intricate cloth pattern. Traditional Hungarian dresses are white with colorful floral patterns embroidered down their lengths, and Malaysian gowns usually come in purple or violet.

African rainforests still slowed climate change despite record heat and drought

Scientists studying the impact of record heat and drought on intact African tropical rainforests were surprised by how resilient they were to the extreme conditions during the last major El Niño event.

The international study, reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences today, found that intact rainforests across tropical Africa continued to remove carbon from the atmosphere before and during the 2015-2016 El Niño, despite the extreme heat and drought.

Tracking trees in 100 different tropical rainforests across six African countries, the researchers found that intact forests across the continent still removed 1.1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year from the atmosphere during the El Niño monitoring period. This rate is equivalent to three times the carbon dioxide emissions of the UK in 2019.

During 2015-2016 African rainforests experienced warming of 0.92 degrees Celsius above the 1980-2010 average, and the strongest drought on record, both driven by the El Niño conditions on top of ongoing climate change. This event gave the scientists a unique opportunity to investigate how Africa’s vast tropical rainforests could react to heat and drought.

Lead author Dr Amy Bennett, in Leeds’ School of Geography, said: “We saw no sharp slowdown of tree growth, nor a big rise in tree deaths, as a result of the extreme climatic conditions. Overall, the uptake of carbon dioxide by these intact rainforests reduced by 36%, but they continued to function as a carbon sink, slowing the rate of climate change.”

Tree measurements in long-term inventory plots in intact forest — unaffected by logging or fire — were completed just before the 2015-2016 El Niño struck. Emergency re-measurements of 46,000 trees across 100 of the plots in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia and the Republic of the Congo then allowed the researchers the first ever opportunity to directly investigate how African tropical forests would react to the hotter, drier conditions.

Senior author Professor Simon Lewis, in Leeds’ School of Geography, who led the development of the Africa-wide network of forest observations, said: “Scrambling field-teams to get to our remote rainforest sites was worth all the difficulties we faced. This is the first on-the-ground evidence of what happens when you heat and drought an intact African rainforest. What we found surprised me.

“African rainforests appear more resistant to some additional warming and drought compared to rainforests in Amazonia and Borneo.”

African rainforests exist in relatively dry conditions compared to those across much of Amazonia and Southeast Asia. The researchers wanted to establish whether this made them particularly vulnerable to extreme climatic conditions, or if the abundance of drought-adapted tree species occurring in African forests meant that they were less vulnerable to additional warmth and drought.

The results showed that the biggest trees in the forest were largely unaffected, whereas the smaller trees grew less and died more during El Niño, potentially due to having less access to water than the larger trees.

Yet these negative effects had only modest impacts. African rainforests continued to function as a carbon sink, as the changes in the smaller trees were too small to stop the long-term increase in overall tree biomass seen in these forests over the last three decades.

Professor Lewis said: “These findings show the value of careful long-term monitoring of tropical forests. The baseline data running back to the 1980s allowed us to evaluate how well these rainforests coped with record heat and drought.”

Past evidence from similar inventory networks in Amazonia studying major droughts in 2005 and 2010, and in Asia studying the large 1997-1998 El Niño event, show either substantially slower tree growth or much greater tree mortality in response to extreme drought and heat. In all these cases, the conditions led to a temporary halting or reversal of the tropical forest carbon sink in these regions.

Co-author Professor Bonaventure Sonké, from University of Yaoundé I (CORRECT) in Cameroon said, “Our results highlight just how important it is to protect African rainforests — they are providing valuable services to us all. The resistance of intact African tropical forests to a bit more heat and drought than they have experienced in the past is welcome news. But we still need to cut carbon dioxide emissions fast, as our forests will probably only resist limited further rises in air temperature.”

Dr Bennett added: “African tropical forests play an important role in the global carbon cycle, absorbing 1.7 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year in the 2000s. To discover that they will be able to tolerate the predicted conditions of the near future is an unusual source of optimism in climate change science.

“Our results provide a further incentive to keep global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as outlined in the Paris Agreement, as these forests look to be able to withstand limited increases in temperature and drought.”

On my less graceful days, I want the measure of “success” (whatever that is) of my performance at work to match that of a meteorologist’s five day forecast or professional baseball player’s batting average. What would it be like to know that succeeding 30-40% of the time is actually doing quite well?! I say this in jest, but Jesus certainly wasn’t mincing words in today’s Gospel when he chided those crowding in to hear him speak by saying that while they were quite proficient at predicting the weather by watching the shifting elements of the earth (a la that of a meteorologist “reading” cloud cover and wind direction), they were clueless when it came to reading the signs of the times and judging what is “right” (as in the “right” of “right relationship” we know of from the biblical definition of justice). To do this well, we need to listen well to the call that God has put in our hearts -- ultimately, a call to love our world into wholeness.

Penning a letter to the nascent Christian communities from prison, the author of the epistle to the Ephesians emphasized the message of unity. In today’s first reading, the community is urged “to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace; one Body and one spirit.” How does that land on our contemporary ears during these times? We have so much division in our nation (as Americans), especially in light of the most recent appointment of a new supreme court justice, ongoing race relation breakdowns and our upcoming midterm elections in November. Our news feeds, online advertising and even our streaming music have become heavily curated by some algorithm of predictability -- dare I say, “partisan” preferences. In the face of this, our faith calls us to something deeper. We are called to seek that which unifies us, both in spite of and through our differences.

Not unlike this imprisoned biblical author, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. writes in his “Letter from Birmingham City Jail:”

In a real sense all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be...This is the inter-related structure of reality.

This calls to mind the greeting I learned from my dear friend Senyo who is from Ghana, West Africa. When I would see him on our college campus and impulsively ask, “Senyo, how are you?” he would reply, “I am well, if you are well.” It is an almost identical echo of the South African concept of ubuntu -- “I am because you are.” Put simply, our existence is intertwined and “caught up” together.

In the Gospel reading, Jesus implies that if we cannot settle our differences, this unresolved split will imprison us, even if not literally, but emotionally, figuratively or symbolically. I cannot help but think, then, of the framework for true dialogue as outlined by Fr. Thomas Merton, OCSO. He says that if you share your perspective and I truly listen with open ears and heart, and if I share my perspective and you truly listen with open ears and heart, then we will end up not with one of us being “forced” to one side or the other, but that we will both be pulled, by the Holy Spirit, to a third place. This, of course, requires that we leave space for the Spirit to enter between us and that we remain open. Perhaps that is the call, the invitation and the challenge we need at this point in our history.

The first reading today says, “I urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” What is that call? Without being too prescriptive, I think it is safe to say that the life of Jesus suggests it is a call to love. Are we living in a way that daily honors that call?
