UI - Implementing the main UI and Menu/Deathscreen
The way i'm going to go about laying out my implementation process for these is by splitting this post into 3 sections for each component - some sections will be longer than others as the deathscreen section consists of not much at all.
Ingame UI
The thought process behind creating my UI came into two main considerations to include - the score and the current lane selected. Any more than that and I feel it would be too cluttered as the game's aesthetic is already very simplistic.
To begin, I created a widget and placed two pieces of text on the canvas panel, using the font I discovered from my research in black with a white outer stroke aligning both pieces of text on the opposite sides of the screen.
I then created text bindings for each of these, wanting to display the score on the right and lane on the left, the code within the bindings looks as such:
(This binding displays the lane by casting to the player to gather the variable which contains the lane, and appends it with "Lane Selected:" to display on the screen)
(This binding functions in the exact same way, but just casts to the score variable and appends that instead)
Ingame the UI looks like this, which i'd call a great success!
Main Menu
To begin tackling this, I wanted to have a scrolling menu similar to the game "Geometry Dash" as an example. I created a clone level of my current game level, and modified the Level BP to spawn simply main tiles with no obstacles on them - as well as this I switched the visibility of the player to false & the max movement speed to 0 within the level BP again which oddly gives the desired slow scroll as if it was set to 1.
A lot of the code here is cropped off, mainly because it'll be covered in a future post on the sound, only the displayed nodes are relevant (I forced the mouse cursor to show too to make sure the menu is navigatable)
To lay ontop of this slow scrolling background - I designed a main menu widget using a transparent black image, buttons, and the good matchs font. There is no specific inspiration behind this menu due to it being such a last minute addition.
Each button contains code which corresponds to the correct function when clicked, the top button opens the game level by name, the middle button opens a new widget (which will be displayed next) which contains all of the how to info on the game, and the third button exits the game.
Here's the how-to widget, made in an almost identical method to what I just described with the menu.
Ingame, the widgets & background look like so:
(The scrolling will be demonstrated in the final gameplay video soon)
I'm overall pleased with this menu, and all functions as intended.
Death Screen
Being the simplest of the bunch, I designed this widget which I was able to base off of the menu using the same methods for continuity throughout my UI
The score text has a binding which is identical to the code shown previously for the ingame UI, casting to the player and appending to display it on the endscreen, each buttons code will be shown below.
The top button's code opens the game level again, the middle button's code opens the menu level, and the bottom button's code quits the game. To implement this widget upon death I was able to simply tag on this code to the end of each string of death code in each tile.
Essentially, it removes all the current widgets on the screen and displays the widget I just created. Ingame the result looks like such:
Conclusion
What a long post! My reasoning behind this was due to how my draft posts were laid out it would have required me to rearrange a lot of my posts' orders, it's not ideal but hopefully the seperation into sections make it easier to read! I'm very happy with my UI in-game and I believe my research was very effective in helping me determine aspects of my UI.

How to play Geometry Dash Lite Level: From Start to Finish
Geometry Dash Lite immediately drew me in with its vivid colors and enticing soundtrack. The game's style is visually appealing, with bright colors and geometric forms dancing across the screen. I could tell it was going to be a wonderful experience. The simple but interesting graphics avoid the possibility of visual overload, establishing an ideal balance that focuses my attention on the gameplay.
Gameplay mechanics
The fundamental physics of geometry dash lite are deceptively simple. As a player, I control a small cube that jumps through a series of stages filled with hazards. At first, I thought, "How hard can it be?" However, I quickly realized that the game demanded a degree of precision and timing that tested my reflexes. Each jump, each press of the finger, had to be precisely timed, providing a sense of urgency that kept me interested.
Designing levels
Every level I encountered had its own set of themes and obstacles, which kept things interesting. I was soaring through a neon-lit paradise with pounding beats one moment and then traversing hazardous spikes in a cavernous setting the next. The sheer range of levels is remarkable. I was actually intrigued to see what fresh hurdles each level would throw at me.
The Music
Geometry Dash Lite reviews are incomplete without noting the soundtrack. The music in the game is not just an addition; it is a vital part of the gameplay. The songs are so energetic and catchy that I frequently caught myself tapping along, which improved my focus. When a track synchronized with my jumps, it generated an exciting experience that made each level feel like a mini-adventure. The synergy between the music's rhythm and the timing of the jumps added to the pleasure of overcoming hurdles.
The challenge factor
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ffa1cde8d268e34f80622d2113266ddb/8a92ed0fc9ceaf7e-eb/s540x810/20318641469e224af9f7a64b7f884d1541dab295.jpg)
Geometry Dash Lite's challenge is one of its most appealing features. I breezed through the first few levels, but the challenge increased considerably as I progressed. Levels necessitate both patience and quick reflexes. I regularly found myself repeating levels, learning from my mistakes and increasing my skills. The sensation of accomplishment that flowed over me when I eventually finished a particularly difficult portion was quite pleasant.
Custom levels and the community
Another notable feature is the ability to create and share customized levels. I was impressed by the community's creativity. While browsing through player-created levels, I came across some pretty amazing designs. Some levels even had unique mechanisms and components that added layers of difficulty. It felt like I was a part of a continuous creative conversation that developed the game's universe. Trying out these custom stages extended my gameplay time.
Customized Characters
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0bbe40feeb968d2b11c286bee2a97abc/8a92ed0fc9ceaf7e-9b/s400x600/308374466d0a10d93a68e9b24f8ff53e0f4cf87e.jpg)
Another part of geometry dash lite that I enjoyed was customizing my character. I enjoyed being able to customize the appearance of my cube by selecting different colors and shapes. Each minor design decision felt personal, allowing me to express my distinct style while immersing myself further in the game's setting. It may seem insignificant, but this small detail made my game experience much better.
User Interface and Controls
I appreciated the user interface's clean and basic design. Navigating through the menus was natural, and I quickly became acquainted with the controls. The simple touch-and-jump concepts translated well on my tablet, making gaming fluid and responsive. This emphasis on playability allows players to concentrate on the challenges rather than fiddling about with controls.

Slave Zero X Review Cons: - Had the game just stop like it's waiting to load but no indicators or controls work. - Never sure when the checkpoint/respawn point has been triggered. - Bit grindy for unlocks. - A lot of button mashes. - Combat can get a bit tedious as you don't have good ground attacks on downed enemies and you can't break out of grabs or recover quickly from throws. - Boss fights are huge difficulty jumps. - The mouse cursor keeps appearing when using a controller. - Bosses have no health bars, they are cheap and chuck in extra people to just add more difficulty. - The story is broken up a lot and can trigger conversations when you are fighting which you have no chance of hearing. - The combat as cool as it can get very repetitive especially when you just juggle the enemy on the screen edge. - The combo counter ends quickly. - The style of the camera can go against the game as it's hard to judge platforms and it can be hard to see enemies and if you can hit them. Researching Win screens
Today was tasked to research some game win screens to see what I might incorporate into my game.
First we have the level completion screen from Geometry Dash, the screen congratulates the player and gives them options to replay the level or return to the main menu (it also shows various stats like the amount of attempts, jumps and the time it took to beat the level.) I like the idea of including miscellaneous stats in the level complete screen so I may include that in my game.
Next we have Sonic's original victory screen, it features text that confirms Sonic passed the act/level and gives a score based off of time taken to complete the level and the amount of rings sonic had when he passed the end goal, this score goes towards extra lives. End of level rewards like lives and powerups are something I think would be a decent idea to put into my game.
Finally we have a Mariokart victory screen. Putting aside how unintentionally hilarious this image looks it also is a very effective game win screen in the way it simply tells the player "congratulations!". Its simple and it serves its purpose (even though its kinda boring" in rewarding the player for completing the course/level.

Therefore, there are so many activities involved in the game as well as many goals to achieve. It will not be easy for a gamer to complete all the tasks on this game, and if they do, it will take centuries to do so.

Geometry Dash Level Password Finder Quick and Easy Solution
💾 ►►► DOWNLOAD FILE 🔥🔥🔥 A screenshot of the user level in Update 2. User Levels are unofficial Geometry Dash levels created by players using the level editor. Players have the ability to like or dislike other users' levels, suggest a star difficulty, compare scores with other players on the level's leaderboard, and comment on them if the player has a registered account. A copying feature is also available which allows players to save a copy of an online level if enabled by the creator of the level and edit it in the level editor. Levels have the ability to receive rates, depending on the level's difficulty and on its quality. There are three types of rate; a star rate, a feature rate, or an epic rate. Feature rated levels possess a yellow glow around the level's difficulty icon, while Epic rated levels also add a flame outside the glow. If user coins are added, collecting them will not add to the player's user coin count unless they are verified by RobTop — unverified user coins appear brown while verified user coins appear silver. Rated levels award stars and mana orbs upon completion. Mana orbs are also awarded for progression. A user seeking a level must first locate the search screen. This is accessed by clicking the rightmost button on the main menu screen, then the bottom right button with a magnifying glass icon that reads "Search" in the Create menu. By applying various search filters, the player can quickly find their desired level. When a custom level has been verified, the following steps must be taken in order for the custom level to be uploaded. Geometry Dash Wiki Explore. Update 2. Levels v1. Dashlands Toxic Factory. Week 3 Blog posts (18/01/21)
Playlist [What media have you taken in this week?]
Attack on titan: this week I have been watching the latest episodes of an anime called attack on titan. There were some major stand out’s like the intensity of the scene, the music choices for scenes and the amazing animation for the fight scenes.
The game I'm making is pixelated and attack on titan is an anime but I can still take some good ideas from attack on titan and implement some things that they do, for example when people transform in titans.
In these two gifs we some some really cool animation from the electricity emitting from Eren [the character with long hair] and this colour choice and how explosive it looks makes it it seem so powerful and amazing to look at. What I may be able to do is have a weapon in my game that when you shoot creates this type of electric scene to make it feel like a powerful weapon.
Geometry Dash:
This week I have been thinking what type of music I could possibly implement into my game and it reminded me of a game that has the exact type of music I’m looking for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=030aTu_B_X4
If you listen to the first couple of minuets from the video above ^^^ you can get a clear understanding on how all the music would sound like in this game and that is a very ecstatic electric sounding song with no lyrics just pure beats. Each song is light hearted and funky with a very catchy sound that sticks in your head. These features are very important for a game like mine because these songs are so catchy and hype that it makes you want to carry on in the game as it keeps you in the mode and focused.
Audience Needs [ In 5 bullets points explain something your audience expects from the genre you are working in.]
A very colourful background and setting that’s appealing to look at and is all very peaceful. I need some good colour combo’s that will attract children to come and play the game.
An easy and extremely repetitive concept for my game, it needs to be easy to understand so that anyone could just come onto the game, play it and immediately have fun and be hooked.
A very catchy song that play’s in the background. This song will preferably be an elect song with no lyrics and its going to be as hyped possible with beats and very catchy so players want to keep playing and the hyped up beats are needed to make a more intense scene.
A cool fighting mechanics that are addictive. I’m going to need a a really addictive and fun fighting mechanic that’s going to keep players wanting to play more and more. It also need’s to be engaging with the players so a lot needs to be going on the screen so a lot of explosions coming from the guns, and the death animations need to be nice and explosive to feel really interactive.
The main menu screen needs to be a burst of colour that will make you want to click play and that anyone who see’s this menu screen will want to start playing because the screen is so explosive in your face and catches your eye.
Planning presenting your final outcome [which website will you be showing your work on if it’s a digital game (unreal/twine)? Itch,io? GameJolt? Youtube?]
For my game I will uploading a trailer for it or just some general gameplay of the game to YouTube because I have quite a lot of editing experience and uploading things to YouTube. And I may try and upload it to a website to play for free but I will research how to upload things to sites and what ones are good.
Test Making Something Part 2:
https://youtu.be/F_3-xGqdoLs
This week I learned the basics of how to make AI’s. For now I have made a simple AI who targets the player and charges at them them spawning in an explosion animation then despawning itself. I have also made an AI spawner where every 3 seconds in a certain location an AI spawns there.
Step one on how to make an AI:
Go to volumes then add a nav mesh bounds volume then set it to 50 by 50 by 50 on the scale.
Duplicate the sidescroller character by right clicking on it in the content browser and then call it AI
Step 2:
Open up the AI blueprints then in the view port go on add component and add “PawnSensing”.
Step 3: [all the coding]
For the spawn emitter at location you can just use the basic explosion for testing and for play sound at location you can just use a basic one given to you as well.
Making the AI spawner:
Step 1:
Then Make a blueprint class and make it an actor
Step 2:
go to add component and add a scene then add a collision box. On the details panel go to collision and turn off generate overlap events and on collision presets turn it to no collision.
Step 3: [all the coding]
Discuss Your Win and Lose States:
For my game there will be no wining or completing the game as the aim of the game will be to survive as long as possible so there will only be high scores. However I could add tags to your name when you reach a certain time like beginner, casual, pro, expert, legend, god. These milestones will make you feel accomplished that your progressing buy obtaining one of these tags and then you work your way from there trying to improve your score.
Show Implementation of your Win and Lose States:
I haven't implementing my win and lose states yet but the game will run that when you do you have to start from the beginning again and try and beat your score. And there will be no win state its just when you get a a certain time/score you may achieved a tag like beginner pro, legend etc. And from the tag you get you just need to keep going and going to beat your score.
Weekly Reflection:
I feel like working at him is a disadvantage because it comes down to me working when i want to work and there are so many distractions. Because when your at home on your pc you can easily get distracted from one YouTube video that leads to not doing work for hours. However recently I have overcome this by doing a a least an hours work a day and by accomplishing task in my game its motivated me to optionally make my game its just getting myself starting to help me get motivated to work
This week I have successfully made the basic building blocks for my game like making a background [that I'm 100% re doing its just a basic blue sky] and I have made the inner and outer walls for my game. I also made some platforms that I chucked around randomly to get a feel of how the game will look.
right now this is where im standing. What I'm going to be working on are some small features that will all build up to a more aesthetic appeal. Some things I want to do is make some animated clouds, get grass on the sides for the game, a nice detailed sky with good shading, and some torches or windows in the building to add some more features to look cool.
I feel this week I could of gotten all the player animations done for the characters because that is going to be a big challenging as character design is probably my weakest part in game design. But I have been watching tutorials on YouTube to help me out with he basics and what to focus on when designing a character.
Next week I plan to get all the AI making done and what I plan to do with them is set working spawn points set on the maps where once they spawn they straight away they target the player. One of my characters is going to be a charging character that will explode into a fire ball because they are a chili girl and the other might shoot cactus needles at you. However I haven’t made all the decisions yet on what AI will be doing what but i certainly have ideas for them.
Here is one of the three spawn locations where AI’s will be dropping down from onto platforms. I do plan to touch up the area by adding some fancy torches and making some detailed floor boards instead of the checker blue ones.

2018 Nissan Qashqai SL AWD Reviewed
Hard to pronounce but easy on gas
Can car companies have too many sport-utility models in their lineups?
Not these days, with the continuous flight from cars to crossovers.
Nissan, for example, now has six versions of sport utility covering every variation of size and price packaging, from the Kicks to Qashqai, Rogue, Murano, Pathfinder, and Armada.
The Nissan Rogue has proved the most popular, leading Nissan Canada’s sales with its blend of compact affordability and car-like civility stroked with SUV styling cues. But it made sense for Nissan to milk the segment further with the new Qashqai (or “cash cow”, as some wags quickly nicknamed it).
The Qashqai was quickly relabeled as a Rogue Sport in the U.S., lest its seemingly unpronounceable two “q”s and the name’s Iranian roots cause tiny American heads to explode. But the Qashqai name proved no problem here in Canada, where it quickly climbed to a close second in sales behind the Rogue.
Although the Qashqai builds on the same CMF (Common Module Family) platform as the Rogue, it is slightly smaller with a 58 mm (2.3-in) shorter wheelbase, a 142 mm (5.6-in) lower height and a 307 mm (12.1-in) shorter length.
With those nimble dimensions, the Nissan Qashqai for sale is aimed squarely at singles, young couples and empty nesters yet, with almost the same width measurement as the Rogue, it still offers do-able five-passenger accommodation and up to up to 1,730 liters (61.1 cu ft) of cargo space.
Nissan Canada elected to start the Qashqai lineup with a simple steel-wheeled, front-wheel-drive. But the Qashqai menu offers a wealth of choices, starting with three trim levels that include the S, SV, and SL.
All models harness a 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine rated at 141 hp and 147 lb-ft of torque.
Power is translated via the six-speed manual that comes standard on lower trims or through an available Xtronic CVT transmission, optional or standard in higher trim applications.
The Xtronic provides programmed stepped-shifting that simulates the more pleasing sensation of upshifting gear changes under acceleration. It also answers driver desires for either thrust or thrift with a Sport Mode Shifter and Eco Mode switch.
The Qashqai lineup at Group 1 Nissan includes standard front-wheel-drive with Nissan’s Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive optional or standard in top SL trim.
The 2.0-liter power mill may not exactly set your pulse rate racing or earn any kind of official towing potential, but its adequate performance will get you where you’re going with a 9.0/7.5L/100km fuel economy rating in this SL AWD model with the Xtronic CVT.
The overall performance benefits from ABS, EPS, a fully independent suspension and a long list of standard or available driver assists including vehicle dynamic control, active ride control, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert and more.
Our top-of-the-lineup SL tester maxes out those technologies with an optional Platinum Package adding Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Intelligent Lane Intervention, LED headlamps with High Beam Assist, along with NissanConnect navigation and infotainment.
This is all wrapped up in an “emotional geometry” exterior design with sharp lines and creases, an aggressive stance on the SL’s biggish 19-inch wheels, along with a little front end bling and Nissan’s Z-heritage trademark boomerang taillights.
The Qashqai’s youthful styling statement is further emphasized with a punchy palette of catchy colours, capped by quirky shades of Monarch Orange and our as-tested Nitro Lime.
Inside, this Qashqai SL is leather-appointed, well put together and, frankly, a little boring. A few splashes of body-coloured trim, surrounds, bright embroidery or whatever, a la Hyundai Kona, would do better to reflect the exterior exuberance.
But there’s not a lot else to complain about. The SL trim offers plenty of bells and whistles controlled through a battery of buttons on the leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel and dash.
The NissanConnect system with navigation, mobile apps, and services is accessed via a 7.0-inch colour touch-screen display and an Intelligent Around View Monitor camera system is also available.
The seats are firm and comfortable. And the rear cargo area, accessed through a wide liftgate, offers Nissan’s innovative Divide-N-Hide cargo system. The 648 liters (22.9 cu ft) of luggage room expands to 1,730 liter (61.1 cu ft) with the second row folded flat and all models include a cargo area cover and six luggage hooks.
Nissan Canada told me they will also be adding the ProPILOT lane-centering and intelligent cruise control system to the upcoming 2019 Qashqai models and we can expect more innovations in future as the company strives to make even more inroads in the steadily increasing and competitive crossover market.

gd is good for me because like i dunno im not that good at getting better at hard games that require many things to pay attention to and hit like love live . i know id get better with practice but the need to pay attention to so much shit at once is just hard for me and its also the reason why ive never learned to play an instrument and the one i was made to (the recorder, of course) i ALWAYS sucked at bc my motor skills are just not fitted for doing that at all
but geometry dash? yes it DOES require an enormous amount of skill, focus and practice, but the entire game outside of menus is played by taps. clicking a mouse, pressing a button, pressing ur screen, etc etc. thats it. you just need to focus on pressing this one button. you dont even need to have ur cursor in certain places while playing levels (ofc u gotta make sure ur cursors actually on the game window if ur playing window mode on a computer)
its very friendly in terms of controls for my clumsy autistic ass (not that every autistic person has this issue i just attribute mine to autism) and has me more motivated to practice and do well in the game
#i think it might have to do w/ like having to move my hands/fingers in many different places at a quick pace i cant rly do that#so controller played games are usually fine for me but most stuff like love live and guitar hero and other rhythm games like it#im just.... i cannot#its not even fun to play the easiest hand holding level they have and im not gonna say the games suck for that but i dont have to play-#-games i dont get any enjoyment out of playing#esp since im not really the demographic because of my difficulty in certain areas ykno

Borderlands 3 – Review
Borderlands arguably kicked off the looter-shooter genre. And in the current console generation, there’s plenty of those to go by. Now five years (or three if you count The Pre-Sequel) since its latest outing, Borderlands 3 is here.
With smart changes, upping the content load, and retaining most of the core gameplay almost to a T, Borderlands 3 is like what you’d expect: more Borderlands. Though saying only that is underselling it how great it is still.
Presentation
Borderlands 3 carries the same signature cel-shaded-ish design it is so famous for. The colourful characters and the drab wastelands do get some nice pop with all the black outlines and dashes on them. Yet, the game still suffers the same issue of textures loading too slowly.
The UI is tidier and with a nice font choice. If only there’s a way to increase the small font size.
The guns overall look even better. The different gun manufacturers have even more pronounced styles based on what brand it is. And it still lends a nice surprise seeing from a super angular Hyperion to the old-school Wild West-style of a Jakobs gun in your very frequent loot drops.
Not only do the guns look distinct, so are the sounds. You can hear the sci-fi-ness of the Maliwan guns spooling before it wreaks havoc. Some Tediore models deteriorate into an 8-bit gun noise as the magazine empties. The explosive sticky pellets from a Torgue shotgun pops in a satisfying crackle.
While you’ll be hearing the guns blazing through the speakers most of the time, the soundtrack that hums diligently in the background of Borderlands 3 is sublime. Each planet you’ll travel to has a different vibe, genre and composer. Which results in some nice variety in the soundtrack. I particularly adore the ambiance in the high-tech Promethea, where it feels a dash of cyberpunk and a swathe of synthwave being used lavishly.
Not to mention, the song on the main menu is so good I spent way too long idling on it.
Gameplay
In Borderlands 3, you play as one of four Vault Hunters. Your goal is to open the Vaults before the Calypso Twins. The villains are bratty streamers that have amassed a literal cult following and aspiring to be gods. The story takes place after Tales From The Borderlands, with characters from Telltale’s adventure game being part of the plot here.
The writing is, depending on how you look at it, is as good or as bad as the previous games. It follows a bit too formulaic to Borderlands 2 with its plot points. The early 10 hours feeling rather weak. But it does come together nicely into its own near the end.
The jokes, which still involves contemporary meme and references that may or may not age well in the next few years, are as what you would expect. I don’t know if it’s good or bad that the in-game characters (and possibly, the writers) are self-aware of how crude the “jokes” can be.
They are a few good ones, including one where resident punching bag Claptrap was not the butt of a joke. Though you must really love low-brow humour to be laughing out loud throughout the game.
Loot And Shoot
Borderlands 3 is all about two things- the looting and the shooting. And those two core pillars of the gameplay loop remain stalwart as ever.
You may notice the word ‘mayhem’ is being thrown out of a lot in the game’s marketing, and they were not kidding. Each fight and combat encounter feels more intense and hectic than past titles. The areas are bigger with a lot of cover spots and vantage points. There are more elemental hazards other than just barrels, including puddles you can electrify.
Enemies flinch when you shoot them, and even flop off and go ragdoll on bigger blasts like from a shotgun. They can also gib and explode in a pool of gore, adding more visceral-ness to the already chaotic combat.
You can now slide after sprinting and mantle on objects but so are the AI enemies. The enemies will scuttle around to flank you, throw grenades to flush you out of cover, and more often than not carry similarly zany weapons as you are. At times it is utter chaos where you cannot even discern where the enemies are because too many effects are popping off left right and center.
At its best, you don’t feel the enemies being extravagant bullet sponges as you control the chaos being unfolded with your guns and skills, exploiting the environment to your advantage.
This is most evident in the improved boss fights. Named boss fights with big health bars on top will have phases where they attack differently. On normal difficulty, it’s still a case of circle-strafing and dealing consistent DPS to beat them, and the patterns are not as wild or difficult. Yet it beats the boring bullet-sponges of the previous games, so a good step forward.
Glorious Guns
The bazillion of guns you get as loot gets some nice overhaul across the board. Each weapon manufacturer brings even more pronounced characteristics than ever and it’s really fun to experiment with. Maliwan weapons now have wind-ups but it’s satisfying to see it splurge in sci-fi bullets, for example. The alt-fire addition brings new wrinkles to gunplay, and makes the already huge pool of procedurally-generated guns even more diverse.
And it goes without saying that each of those guns overall just feels good to shoot.
As per tradition, each new Borderlands comes with a new set of four Vault Hunters, the playable characters. Borderlands 3 tweaked a bit on how the action skill works and make each character plays even more differently. Zane gets to equip two action skills instead of one, while Moze’s two equippable action skill determines what guns her Iron Bear mech has. Other than that, most of the passives divided into three skill trees are as expected. It seems straightforward at first but there are some wicked synergies and potential for interesting builds.
Also, Gearbox improved the car handling, and made you care more of those Catch-A-Ride vehicles with custom parts to find and unlock.
(Questionable) Quality Of Life
With five years and a bunch of looter-shooters on the market these days, Borderlands 3 brought a lot of quality of life changes. you now have a one-number gear score for quick comparisons of gear stats. The map is so, so useful now that it is in 3D that shows elevation. Ammo, health and cash pickups automatically after opening boxes. If you are in the range of a collectible, an icon pops up to show you it’s there. No need to worry if you and your mates have the right character level as there is an option to enable level scaling to the party leader, and have loot instanced for each player so no loot stealing. You can fast travel from anywhere now. Ally AI sometimes will accompany you in fights and will help revive you.
Though it could still do more. The UI when bringing up the ECHOCast (the player menu) is horrendously slow to load. With the map being so huge why isn’t there an option to highlight each of the markers immediately so you don’t spend minutes trying to find where your objective is at?
On that note, Borderlands 3 really needed another pass on polish. While I personally don’t find framerate to be an issue during the hectic combats, reports of performance issues from all platforms, especially in split-screen, are pretty much true. I also found the AI getting stuck at geometry, and some side missions not spawning the enemies (the one about a ratch in Promethea, in particular). And the player menu sometimes just give up loading the skill trees when you load it straight after a level up.
Content
Borderlands 3 is amazingly girthy in content. It is still designed to be a full-packaged game with a campaign to beat. Not a games-as-a-service like other looter-shooters. And that campaign can take you more than 30 hours. I finished my first playthrough at 40, doing as much side missions and exploring the map as much as I can.
There are plenty of these side missions, and as you’d expect most of the questionable humour and references come from here. These take place in parts not seen in the critical path so at least it’s worth seeing the areas where you wouldn’t stumble upon naturally.
The collectibles this time are much more gratifying to collect. The three Typhon DeLeon audio logs on most maps not only give some good lore, but a great reward in the form of a loot cache, with a bigger chance to spawn rare loot. It’s worth going for them.
Circle Of Slaughter, the series’ Horde mode, returns again. And there’s a new mode called Proving Grounds where you push through a few combat areas and then face a boss, which plays closer to the usual gunplay in the story. Both of these are available normally within the story. But now it has separate matchmaking so you can play these as if they are an entirely different game mode.
After finishing the story, you will then get access to True Vault Hunter mode, the New Game+. On top of that is the Mayhem Mode modifier that adds wacky status effects and make the game even tougher. These two modes offer better loot drops, so that’s a good incentive to go back for another round. And of course, going through the game as another Vault Hunter and try out different builds is always on the cards.
Guardian Ranks (previously Badass Ranks) will now only unlock after beating the game. So all the extra passives are strictly for your next playthrough. Again, more reason to keep going after the 40-hour mark.
Gearbox has promised an event for all players and there is already a season pass of DLCs. If it follows what the previous titles did, expect a long tail of content, free and paid.
With Borderlands 3, the game dabbles a bit more on cosmetics. The skin variants don’t have palette swaps, colours can be customised separately. On top of the skins and head variants, you can now add emotes and also put on skins and trinkets on weapons. Honestly, it’s not that compelling and this feels like the game is playing catch-up with its genre peers. But it doesn’t hurt anyone, there’s no micro-transactions of sorts. Hopefully it will continue that way.
The Twitch integration is excellent. Not only can viewers of Borderlands 3 streams peruse the streamer’s inventory and skill trees, but there are also cool events that can show up, with opportunities to mess them up by buffing badass enemies or reward them with goodies. Plus, you can nab a piece of loot from the red chests they open for yourselves too.
Personal Enjoyment
When the first Borderlands arrived, I was already a fan of Gearbox’s output from the Brothers In Arms days. So I have a personal bias of loving this franchise from the start.
Borderlands 3 is the Double Down burger of video games I feel. It’s excessive and loud. It’s indulgently good. The ultimate comfort food if you, like me, love crispy greasy chicken patties. But it’s not just one burger, playing through Borderlands 3 is munching through a platter of these Double Downs non-stop. Instead of meat on meat on meat, it’s guns on guns on guns.
But boy, I am not gonna lie, it can be a bit overwhelming. During the early 10 hours, I feel like there were too many excessive combat sections. And with not much of a strong plot thread for me to cling on to.
Proper stakes in the story do get set up after that initial hump. And the pacing gets better with heavy combat sections sparsed out a bit. The shooting shines and getting rare loot, even if it is just minor variations of a gun archetype you’ve seen before, is rewarding.
And the soundtrack has synthwave. So, big points for that.
That said, those quality of life issues does affect my enjoyment. I didn’t spend time comparing weapon stats as much and hated the times I need to sort my backpack because of the chugging menu. Those need to be snappy and I hope it’s one of the things to be rectified, alongside the performance issues.
I have a feeling that once these issues are sorted in the months to come, it would make an already great experience even better.
Verdict
With more chaotic gunplay and many small improvements, Borderlands 3 proves that the pioneering looter-shooter series still has a place in 2019.Though it still carries the same low-brow writing and the performance issues cannot stand as is.
That said, if you’ve used to the series, Borderlands 3 is like grabbing a huge platter of your favourite comfort food. Clear some time, get your mates if you can and sit down. It’s time to dig in and get those orange drops.
