the thing about reading primarily older works nowadays is that, sooner or later, you're going to run into something you deem objectionable.
things that weren't objectionable when the book was written and are now, and things that were objectionable at the time. it's everywhere, even in books aimed primarily at children.
you don't have to be comfortable with it (you don't have to finish the book, either, if it's something you decide you cannot tolerate) but it can be worthwhile to examine why you find the subject matter objectionable even if the answer is as simple as "wow, this is incredibly racist".
#aloys says things sometimes#general you of course but i've been reading fifties scifi lately and while they often have interesting things to say re: the cold war#some of them are just. incredibly steeped in misogyny and xenophobia among other things but i do think it's important (for myself)#to include those with the story its trying to tell rather than make a snap decision about the novel based on how uncomfortable i am with#said subject matter#i've been sick lately so this might not be coherent idk
