Re-watch of The Spirealm. Episode 11

Watching over. Guarding his dreams.

I took notice only during the re-watch and reading the original novel, but Nanzhu really acts differently inside and outside the Doors. While inside he's as cheeky and dramatic as inhumanly possible, in the real world he's very subdued and in his The-Ruthless-Boss-mode. The only thing that is the same is the way he looks at Qiushi.

Ugh, not this guy again... At least now he's not with that poor lizard. When I was watching it for the first time I was confused as to why they seem to obscure his face constantly. But then I got it - the twist was genuinely surprising.

This👆 was the part that convinced me that the show creators were completely insane. Like, Obsidian members taking turns and asking Qiushi if he was jealous of the newbie? It's not even framed as a professional competition! They're asking him, point blank, if he's upset that Nanzhu pays attention to the other person. The most het person to ever het the Earth would suspect that something's up here.

And Qiushi's reaction. He's maybe oblivious, but more importantly, he doesn't have any expectations of being treated as anyone special. He has always been abandoned, be it for selfish reasons or "the greater good", so why would this time be anything different? He was the newbie, got his experience, now there is a new person to take his place. He's not even sad, he's accepted and made peace with this part of human nature a long time ago.

AO3 authors see your bookmarks!!!

I've seen posts to this effect before, but I just wandered across a really hurtful bookmark on one of my works so PSA TIME.

Authors see whatever you write, and unlike comments, we have ZERO control over bookmark text! So, now that someone's been an asshole and written something rude, it's permanently visible forever to the author and anyone else glancing at the bookmarks (which, plenty of people use bookmarks to look for recs, these aren't just for the individual user!)

So. 1) don't be a dick where the person who gave you Free Story will 100% see it and be upset, because at least personally, 1 mean thing > 100 nice things in terms of psychological impact. People who do this decrease my desire to share stories online so intensely. (If I wanted to hear people being ungrateful shits about my work, I could stay at, you know, work! And at least get paid for it!) AO3 is not Goodreads. Bad reviews based on your personal taste are not helpful, they're just toxic.

2) if you are, for some baffling reason, intent on making bookmarks for works about which you have nasty things to say (why???) then use PRIVATE BOOKMARKS. These are invisible to the author and other readers. Only you, the entitled and meanspirited user, will see your "1 of 5 star" rating and "liked the first chapters but then it's just gay sex 🤬" (real paraphrase from a bizarrely homophobic bookmark on one of my works). No one else needs to know that you're unbearable and tag-illiterate, okay?

I think the problem is less their physical identity and more that they're comfortable petite bourgeois/Professional-Managerial Class types. For them, Trump is worse than Biden. While the PMC isn't exclusive to the Democratic Party, that's where you'll find that they predominate. They're the same people that are saying "what do you expect me to do, NOT work at Raytheon?"

Minorities, the disabled, etc, sure, they care about them, but only insofar as they care about themselves as a part of that group. This mindset is fixed in their heads even if only subconsciously because their own position requires exploiting all those identities as they exist in the working class. Sure, they care about the quality of life of their paraplegic employees, but they'd damn well better clock in on time.
