Cassis Ch F: Richard Gasquet [3] def. Jurij Rodionov 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
J. Rodionov might have taken the first set as it was the source behind his 100% break point conversion rate, but it was insufficient as soon as R. Gasquet further dialed in since the second set. Through his cleaner strikes, he ended up bringing the former off-balance, especially with some vintage winners inflicting more damages from the baseline, leaving J. Rodionov a little to no option to move forward as it previously was. This way, R. Gasquet created 7 break points, converting 71% of them throughout all three sets.
Besides, except the first set, R. Gasquet also appeared more solid on serve. Scoring 6 aces than J. Rodionov's 5, the Frenchman had an outstanding first serve winning percentage with 71%, which helped him to get out of trouble in some occasions. However, this left the Austrian's second serves more vulnerable since he only won 52% of his second serve points compared to R. Gasquet's 57%, thus making it more attack-prone at worst.
As a result, R. Gasquet became the third oldest person to win a Challenger title after Ivo Karlovic and Fernando Verdasco. Grinding it out until the body called it quit would make it even more legendary for R. Gasquet, regardless of when or where he would end his playing career at. On the other hand, J. Rodionov joins the Austrian Davis Cup team on the World Group I tie against Turkey, which will be a home tie in Bad Waltersdorf for the rest of the week. That could be another exciting one at their best.

throwing a fit whenever my fave loses and hoping jakey dies since the mid-2000s 🫡

transcript:
Monday, July 7th [2008]. Roger Federer was not supposed to lose the Wimbledon final. He was supposed to thrash Nadal in return for his own annihilation in Paris, break Bjorn Borg's record, and smash any doubts about him being the greatest player that ever lived. When he lost the first two sets, 4-6, 4-6, I knew in my brain that he was going to lose. Even when he saved two championship points and won the next two sets, 7-6, 7-6, I knew he couldn't do it. He lost, 7-9 in the final set. In my heart, I wanted him to win. I am not going to tell anyone, even James [my friend who also watched tennis], that I cried at his defeat. (James told me he cried when Agassi lost in one of the opens a few years ago.) He deserved a record that will be remembered. No one is going to care about his >231 weeks as the world #1. He was supposed to win Wimbledon 6 times in a row. He let me down. I hope he comes back next year and wins, and the year after, and the year after. He needs to win eight times to beat Sampras's record, and beat 14 Grand Slams. He needs to win the French Open and show Nadal who is the boss. Rafa Nadal needs to break a leg. Margin note: I wanted him to stage the greatest comeback ever...better than Murray v. Gasquet
