Samsung Galaxy Prime Core Review : A Decent Entry-Level Smartphone

Samsung Galaxy Prime Core comes as one of the basic smartphones to connect to Google services like Google Drive, Maps, and Google Now. There is a simple gray design in the phone with the boring screen which tries hard to read in broad daylight and the camera is outdated.

But the price makes it one of the lowest and Verizon’s signal works faster. It costs only $168 when you buy it without a contract and full retail. It costs $30 with a 2-year contract and $7 monthly on the Verizon Edge plan for 24 months.

At the same time, MetroPCS offers Core Prime for $130 with no contract. For a starter device, it is absolutely fine. But you still need to shop around for a better price.

Design

The device features a 4.5-inch display to keep it more compact than larger 6-inch displays but the meager 800x480p resolution is outdated. The screen looks grayish and more reflective indoors than nearby screens and videos, web pages, and images look pixilated and a bit dim.

Onscreen images wash out and texts are even harder to read under the rays when going outdoors. The device also heats up, especially in warm summer days.

The Galaxy Core Prime comes loaded with Android 4.4.4 KitKat (not Android 5.1 Lollipop). It will also skip Lollipop. Samsung has added its TouchWiz UI over Android. Samsung also adds a few added settings and apps like easy mode for simple home screen layout and Power Saving Mode.

Big Red loads over 20 carrier apps as well as partner apps on the Verizon model. It will also have Amazon apps, several Verizon apps to manage account, some demo games, NFL Mobile, and more.

Camera

The camera app features settings like Panorama, Auto, Beauty Face, Continuous Shot, Best Photo, and Sports modes. It also has a Settings menu to open items like ISO, Photo Resolution, white balance, geotagging, and gridlines, etc.

By default, the rear camera is set to 3.9MP out of the box, instead of 5MP. For 3.9MP, it changes the 3:5 aspect ratio and 4:3 for max resolution. The camera is decent enough to capture bright outdoor photos which contrast with low-res images in low light.

Flash generates bright light to make everything quite clearer and brighter. Like all the pictures, selfies are the trade-off. There is nothing you can do with the 2MP front camera unless taking grainy self-portraits, even with Beauty mode on. Outdoor selfies look brighter but indoor snaps are grayish.

The 720p video recording is good but not impressive. Audio pickup is weak for others but you will get your voice clearer. You need to look for well-lit, outdoor scenes which don’t grasp a lot of noise.

With lower-powered CPU, you can’t do anything much with Galaxy Core Prime. And 1.2GHz Snapdragon chipset is very common in this range. But navigating the phone is quite responsive while scrolling through menus and screens. Music and videos stream quite quickly thanks to Verizon’s fast network.

The slower processor and poor resolution makes this device worst for gaming. It falls far behind LG G4 and Samsung Galaxy S6 in processing graphics. But it does play some popular titles and casual games fine.

Battery

According to Samsung, the 2000mAh battery in Prime Core can last around 10 hours of Talktime on 3G, around 9 hours of video playback and 11 hours of Wi-Fi time. But in the real world, it could last shorter or longer, according to your usage.

Live maps and video streaming uses data and resources quite faster than sending messages. All in all, the device should last at least 8 hours without getting drained.

Connectivity

The Speedtest.net measured significantly high speed which hovered around whopping 30Mbps to 40Mbps for downloads while 20Mbps uplink. There were some dips but coverage variations are common. In real world tests, pages load really fast with LTE.

But Verizon’s network was not too strong to download large files quickly. Music and videos were streamed without any hiccups.

Wi-Fi supports 2.4GHz instead of 5GHz networks. So, downloads and uploads may not be as fast as possible with high-end devices. Movies and other large files will take even longer for downloading, as per the size.

Is it worth to buy this entry-level Android device?

The Galaxy Prime Core is just a simple smartphone that can be found anywhere. If you are looking for a low-budget smartphone ($130 on MetroPCS and $168 with Verizon plan), Samsung Galaxy Prime Core is definitely for you.

For MetroPCS users, it is one of the best choices in this range. But if you are a Verizon user, it is better to spend a few dollars more to choose a better phone.

When it comes to competition, LG Lucid 3 comes at $200 but shares most of the specs in Core Prime with a 4.7-inch screen, 2440mAh battery and 960x540p resolution, which is quite better. It also features 1080p full HD video and in-built wireless charging.

The only downside here is 0.3MP camera, vs. 2MP camera in Core Prime. For around $32 more, you can also look for Microsoft Lumia 735 with Verizon. But if you download plenty of apps and use Google services, don’t go with Windows Phone. If you want to keep things simple, the Galaxy Prime Core is a good buy.

Android Auto examen : La meilleure façon d'obtenir Google Maps dans votre voiture

J'aime Android, j'aime les voitures, et j'aime conduire, donc j'étais assez excité quand Google a annoncé Android Auto. Et après l'avoir utilisé pendant plusieurs semaines et rendu les véhicules d'essai à leurs propriétaires, il me manque un peu.

 Android Auto en est encore à ses débuts. Contrairement à un Smartphone, que vous pouvez facilement échanger contre un nouveau modèle, Android Auto nécessite plus d'engagement. Vous devez soit acheter une voiture avec un système d'autoradio au tableau de bord compatible avec le logiciel, soit payer pour l'installer dans un système de rechange. Ce n'est pas bon marché, et il n'est pas facile d'en changer pour autre chose.

 Une fois que vous l'aurez dans votre voiture, vous réaliserez rapidement qu'elle manque de certaines des caractéristiques dont elle a vraiment besoin pour se sentir entière. Et parfois, il répond de façon incohérente à vos ordres. Mais je réalise combien il est plus sûr d'avoir un grand écran avec Android dans le tableau de bord de ma voiture que le plus petit écran du Smartphone dans ma main, et c'est super pratique d'avoir les applications et services de Google à portée de main.

J'ai toujours pensé que conduire une voiture devrait être une expérience agréable, mais conduire une voiture avec Android Auto sera, dans un premier temps, un test de patience. Vous ne pouvez pas toujours monter dans la voiture, brancher votre téléphone et partir.

 J'ai testé Android Auto dans une Hyundai Sonata 2015, qui a été installée sur le lot, et une unité Pioneer du marché des pièces de rechange. Dans les deux cas, la voiture démarre par défaut dans l'interface propriétaire du récepteur. De là, vous devez appuyer sur le bouton pour Android Auto, qui n'apparaît qu'une fois que le téléphone est correctement connecté. Il doit être connecté via USB et connecté via Bluetooth pour fonctionner.

 J'ai utilisé deux appareils Galaxy S6 Edge pendant le processus de révision et les deux ont eu des problèmes au début en restant connecté au récepteur. Une légère secousse du cordon de la Sonata déconnectait complètement Android Auto, tandis que l'unité principale de Pioneer prenait quelques minutes pour enregistrer que le téléphone étaient même branchées. J'ai été en retard pour tout depuis que j'ai commencé à tester ce logiciel. Inversement, le Nexus 6 en cours d'exécution Android 5.1 a fonctionné comme un charme à chaque fois. Je ne sais pas si c'est parce qu'un téléphone fait tourner Android et l'autre fait tourner Android Auto et le mode Carte de Samsung en même temps, mais j'espère que ce n'est pas une autre histoire de fragmentation Android.

Pour être juste, une fois que j'ai compris les exigences de connexion d'Android Auto, comme s'assurer de ne pas cogner le cordon connecté au Galaxy S6-il a très bien fonctionné. Vous n'avez qu'à appuyer sur le bouton de commande vocale à l'écran (ou au volant, si votre voiture le supporte) et lui demander de faire quelque chose, comme vous le feriez avec votre Smartphone. Dans la Sonata, Android Auto était surtout rapide et réactif. Dans le marché de l'après-vente, il a parfois eu du mal à suivre le rythme de mes tapotements. Dans les deux cas, il y avait des moments où l'interface était trop lente pour répondre à ce que je lui avais demandé de faire simplement parce que je n'avais pas une bonne connexion cellulaire.

  La bonne chose à propos d'Android Auto est que si vous êtes un utilisateur Android expérimenté, il ya un sentiment de familiarité. L'écran d'accueil, où s'affichent toutes vos informations de base, ressemble exactement à Google Now sur votre téléphone. Les notifications d'alerte apparaissent comme sur Lollipop. Si vous voulez faire un appel téléphonique, votre liste de contacts est facilement disponible, avec vos favoris épinglés en haut pour un accès rapide. Et si vous avez besoin de plus d'options, le bouton de débordement reconnaissable (le "hamburger" ou trois lignes horizontales) se trouve en haut à gauche de chaque application.

En fait, je me suis arrêté quelques fois pour taper quelque chose, ce qui se produisait généralement lorsque j'obtenais des indications quelque part et je ne me souvenais pas de l'adresse pour la crier à haute voix. C'est un bon dispositif de sécurité, mais que se passe-t-il si quelqu'un sur le siège passager peut taper quelque chose pour vous ? Il y a aussi un mode nuit inversé qui s'allume lorsque vous traversez un tunnel ou lorsqu'il est l'heure des phares.

Google tied up with LG to launch the Nexus 4 in October 2012. The smartphone offered flagship-like specifications at a mid-range price point.
