The full rules that I used:

If a pokemon faints, it counts as death. You can't use them anymore.

You can only catch the first wild pokemon on each area. There's a bit of vagueness when it comes to consecutive routes or towns where you can get more than 1 pokemon.

You can get one extra level to your team per area. (This was added late) If new pokemon are too low level you can get them to whatever you highest is minus 10.

You can't catch a pokemon that you've already caught (unless they have different evolutions/forms, although it's not a thing in gen 1). If you have a Pidgey and next route the first pokemon is a Pidgey, you can give one extra level to your lowest level pokemon.

You can't buy any HP or status heals. Everything else is fine.

All gyms have to be done fully with no pokemon center visits. You go in, you either win or you die.

Starter, fossil, eeveelution and hitmons are random.

Legendaries and master ball are allowed if you want. (Never fought the birds or Mewtwo).

The goal is to beat the elite four and Gary.

Started with Squirtle. Got a Pidgey, Rattata and Weedle.

Rattata (Mike) missed and got critted as the first casualty.

Beat Brock. Then I had the choice of Magikarp or a wild pokemon. Chose not to get the Magikarp. Wanted Jigglypuff but got a Spearow. My teams tend to have lots of flyers.

On Mount Moon I got a Zubat (love Crobat). Wanted an Ekans or Abra from the next routes but no luck, just the same pokemons I had. On the way to Bill Spearow (Rika) got critted by a Slowpoke with confusion. Terrifying.

Looking back it was 2 routes together, so for my next one (blue) I'll get an extra chance to catch something and one extra level (my team is constantly underleveled save for 1 or 2 girls).

Kept going, ignoring Misty for now. At this point Pidgeotto and Wartortle were 20-21 and the rest where still behind trying to be useful (don't remember exactly, but 13-15 range).

Before Vermillion City I had two routes aswell. Not knowing this was a thing was a problem since my team felt way lower level than I expected. Got an Oddish!

Went to the route east of Vermillion. Magneton with thundershock almost kills several. Got an Ekans! On the tunnel first pokemon is a level 29 Dugtrio so Wartortle has to kill it before I get critted by dig.

SS Anne before I backtrack to get Misty and Pidgeotto (Pollo) gets critted by Gary's Raticate completely out of nowhere.

He was not full HP but it was a massive miscalculation that cost his life and my strongest pokemon at the time.

After Misty I went east to prepare my team (Wartortle, Beedrill, Zubat, Ekans and Oddish) for Surge. Wanted a Voltorb but no luck, on the cave I got an Onix!

Get Surge with Onix's dig, pretty much a free gym. Go through the tunnel. A series of rea~~lly bad decisions and Ekans (Sanae) gets critted, Onix (Tenshi) gets oneshot critted by absorb from an underleveled Oddish (thought I could dig...) and our Oddish (Ahko) ALSO gets critted right before evolving. (<- I missplayed this part SO badly).

At this point I had a team of 3 (Wartortle, Beedrill and Golbat) so I try to go west of Lavender see if we can get stronger before pokemon tower.

From this point I get almost no new wild pokemon (keep getting Spearow/Pidgey/Rattata/Oddish) so my team doesn't grow in size. Go to Celadon (I can pick Eevee or one of the prizes in the casino). Although Abra is kinda tempting, I love all my Eevee forms. Roll for it (it has to be random) and I get Flareon. Jolteon is my favourite and it would have been ok, Vaporeon would be a bit redundant since I have Wartortle.

Go west of Celadon (wanted Doduo) no luck. Go south of Lavender. All this just to be ready for pokemon tower. Can't lose any more pokemon after that blunder.

I fight Gary one more time. Gyarados uses HYDRO PUMP and crits. Golbat (Aoi) dies.

Get a Gastly and finish up. How sad...

Get the pokeflute. Remember I haven't caught anything south of Lavender yet. Get Snorlax!

Next time for the part where you go to Fuchsia I'll check the number of routes so my levels and chances to catch new pokemon are higher. I thought that it was all a big route.

First new pokemon is a Ditto fighting our Beedrill. Run out of super balls and have to kill it. Doduo runs away on the safari zone. Everywhere else I keep getting previously caught pokemon.

Silph goes relatively ok, Gary manages to not kill anyone for once.

Fight every single trainer I can because I'm back to being very underleveled. On Koga's gym Beedrill (Pax) fails to oneshot an Hypno with twinneedle and gets critted by confusion. For Koga I send Blastoise (Aurora), set up +6 defense with withdraw but on Weezing I get CRITTED by selfdestruct.

What a bloodbath. My team is now Flareon, Haunter and Snorlax. On Sabrina set up Flareon with +6 evasion double team and sweep with swift.

Go for one of the hitmons (chan this time) and go through the water south of Fuchsia. Eventually get a Goldeen (my surf pokemon now, very underleveled from fishing in Fuchsia), Tentacool and Slowpoke (Articuno island). Get to Cinnabar and catch a Ponyta and get Kabuto from the fossil.

Haunter at 50, Snorlax/Flareon at 40-high and Ponyta, Hitmonchan and Goldeen at 30-low. Blaine is quite easy but at this point my team is still pretty weak. Get some levels in the burned mansion and lose Hitmonchan (Miu) and Goldeen (Seiga) to Ponyta's crits. I didn't know they had such high attack stat. Get Kabutops at 40. Destroy Blaine.

No more places to level up. Go Giovanni. Keep Haunter for him while everyone else deals with all the karatekas and cool trainers. Psychic is so OP in gen 1. Earthquake is scary but I outspeed everything but Dugtrio, luckily it doesn't use it.

Go fight Gary. Haunter's thunderbolt for Pidgeot, Snorlax will overpower and outheal Alakazam and then Flareon and Haunter will sweep the rest.

Victory Road goes well, try to catch Geodude and it selfdestructs...

Final grind. Haunter is 60, Flareon is 53 (1 more for flamethrower...) and Snorlax, Kabutops and Rapidash are 50 after using all rare candies I had.

Final check. Tentacool (Momo) and Slowpoke (Tomoko) are on the PC box. They can't really help at this point.

Lorelei: try to set up Flareon +6 evasion. Dewgong has rest. I can't outdamage it like this, I thought fire spin would do more (ice/water) but it says not effective... Swap Snorlax in. Body slam my way through her team. Lapras is strong. Paralize her. Blizzard hits hard. I rest and wake up with pokeflute. I just need one paralysis proc or a blizzard miss so I can finish her. Blizzard crits and Snorlax (Koharu) dies.

Realize that gen 1 does not have PP for enemy moves. Realize that we are dead if Haunter faints, since I used both heals on Lorelei already. Flareon and Rapidash will have to buy time if Haunter gets some status or negative stats at any point.

Bruno dies to mega drain on the Onixes (Onices?) and psychic on the Hitmons and Machamp.

Agatha is way more dangerous. Gengar tries confusion ray and hypnosis. Not getting hit by dream eater so pokeflute and psychic. Got hit by nightshade once. Golbat and Arbok aswell. Foe Haunter is weaker than us. Second Gengar falls aswell but get hit by nightshade again.

Unit Teambuilding - Mix Red

I debated whether I even wanted to do this one. If I'm being honest, I really struggle with this. When I do these teambuilding things, I like to at least run by the structure of "how does this perform on an F2P budget," giving at least one team that's all F2P aligned allies to showcase how it holds up. This is true for the limited pairs especially, since I personally consider nothing to be worse than a limited pair requiring another limited pair to perform.

Joke's on me though! DeNA has absolutely created worse, by introducing the concept of hey, what if the only way to get a pair was to pay for it, and you still had to roll the dice? Also what if it was Red, my personal most hated character in the series now? And what if, just hypothetically, we made him with Venusaur, and then gave him identical tools to SS Leaf so he's effectively better in every way? What if that?

General Overview So I'll talk about him, but I'm not teambuilding. Because truth be told? No one should pull on this. And keep in mind, I'm one of those that was Variety Neutral. I don't love those, but if they're a favorite or they had something interesting going on you wanted, sure, go for it. EX colors were never that important to me. I think the outrage around Variety Scouts was at least somewhat overblown.

This, though? People honestly aren't mad enough. If this game had a robust competitive or co-op mode, I can promise you, this would be the thing that killed the game. Because now you have to pay to keep up at all.

Fortunately, Masters is making many a questionable financial move, but is not, as of yet, requiring anything. It's aggressive monetization, no one can question that, but it's not like Mix Red is a necessity. Or, to be brutally honest, even all that good. Yes, he has some very nice debuff tools, including both offenses (randomly) and -2 AoE Sp Def per Buddy move. Yes, he gets his baby cheat skill to always crit and never miss. Yes, he gets Grassy Terrain on his Max Move (they didn't even do GMax because they know how bad Damage Field sucks) and his first sync, thanks to being a Field pair.

He also has worse Sp Atk than Piers. Granted, Archie proved ages ago you can work around such limitations with the right tools, so mild complaint. The bigger issue is that his Buddy Move is conditional on Grassy Terrain, and he only gets two activations. And if you want to debuff Sp Def quickly for a sync, you're popping Max Move right away. Terrain ends roughly after second sync, and is gone forever. I expected Red to be overblown given his presence, to the point I fully anticipated these Mix pairs being a response to the Ultimate Battles they're going to pump out. But this? This barely keeps up with Gauntlet, much less the endurance contest Anabel is shaping up to be.

So if he's not that next level powercreep answer to the new hardest content...what is he? A Grassy Terrain support, and a Grass-type damage dealer. Well great news, chucklenuggets! Adaman's still top dog, and physical still dominates the Grass meta! Your own single-target damage is base 180; good but not exceptional. And that shrivels up to Razor Leaf once your Terrain dies. So you're hardly breaking new ground as a Grass damage dealer. There's an argument for him being the Special counter part to SS Acerola. It's a bad one, but it's there. But there is no competing against SS Lyra with this guy. Her utilities massively eclipse his own thanks to guaranteed flinch.

For a pair that is exclusively paid for, who has no new costume and no unique EX, this is...bizarre. It's not bad, but I wouldn't consider it the best pull of the month. I don't even consider it top three. In fact, I'd probably say all the PokeFairs are better than this guy. Yes, even you, Elaine. At least you have supreme Gauntlet potential. Red just feels really, really weird. You'd expect a paid-only pair to be game-breaking, but...he's just kinda regular good-ish.

And I think I know why. It's the 300 scout point thing, isn't it? They honest to god think that 300 scout points is being too generous, on a paid-only scout. They earnestly believe that cutting the scout points is a level of "accessible" significant enough to hold back on this pair that costs the equivalent of like $200. That "easier to pity" is enough to hold back, despite how much is demanded for it. Let this be a lesson to you, friends, about what this game truly is. This is gacha. Anything that isn't maximum exploitation is to be considered an act of supreme generosity, and comes with them taking something away in turn. Vs. Misty (SS Kris, Eevee Lyra, Archie) The team did not change, but my ambition did. 450 strength is viable, even with Lyra and Archie at 2/5. I imagine 3/5 just lets them run train on this entire fight, not that I'm willing to candy Lyra when I need all the Eeveelutions to 3/5. Tech is rare, girl, we're just gonna suffer through it. The main draw is accuracy debuffs. Get a few of them in, and Blizzard is now running on fairly high odds to just miss you. Lyra is more critical to keep around than Archie once the sides are down, which can be achieved shortly after foe's first sync. Provided Lyra is in good condition, her own sync and some compressed Muddy Water can get the job done.

Vs. Marlon (Lodge Adaman, Tech Gyarados, NC Serena) Full disclosure, I have not updated anything about this fight, but it's the one I'm looking at next. I fully believe it is possible to hit 450 strength, and net an extra 3k points thanks to confuse. Serena can get Flabbergast on Brutal Swing, and can flinch AoE with it. A good opening roll gets us both effects, and starts her match off strong. I'm considering dropping Gyarados for Blastoise for the more assured confuse, but I don't think it's a great idea. More importantly, accuracy cheese can matter in this fight, so I'm thinking about Brutal Swing as a possible solution overall. I'm not saying her Dark sync would do better, but I am saying I'm thinking about it.

Vs. Lana (SS Blue, Eusine, Dojo Gloria) I opted to EX both Eusine and Dojo Gloria this morning, and then set them to work against Lana. Well, okay, first I set them to work against Nessa, but then I realized I should swap. Gloria has Fighting, which is strong against Lana, while Lysandre's burn is good against Nessa specifically. To be truthful, so long as the right didn't lead with Hydro Pump, Blue handles himself fine. Gloria in particular is really strong, but oddly, Eusine's the bigger win today. I pushed him to 3/5, and let me tell you, Buddy Surf and that full sync is pretty impressive in a mode like this. The man gets it done, and it's a huge help considering Gloria's single-target focus. Big fan. I did consider, briefly, the possibility of 500 strength. But that doesn't feel too assured. Also, Blue needs to land a 20% for confuse. It's pretty important.

Vs. Nessa (Swimsuit Misty, May, SS Lysandre) Gauge issues, thy name is Lysandre. This one was rough just because of the gauge problems, but it is possible to solve them. May's Racing Rain passive does help enough to keep them cycling. The important bits here are the accuracy debuff of Muddy Water, Lysandre's sync to finish off sides more reliably, and perhaps most critically, Lysandre being 5/5 now because I told you that fucking Dojo Gloria banner would get me! EVERY TIME WITH THIS GUY. Fortunately the special defense drops may be what let us wrap up before dying horrifically. The attack buffs softened Earthquake to live some hits, too. My only regret is not having confuse present, but I can't switch this up.

Vs. Archie (Lana, Hilbert, Kris) No change. If I were to try Blastoise over Gyarados on the NC Serena match, this is why. I think, though am not confident, that swapping out Hilbert for Gyarados might result in better performance what with the rain. The downside is I'd almost definitely need to EX Lana. The lack of support EX puts Kris' damage too far back, and Lana doesn't take hits well enough to survive that long without. Especially if we're going with Rain, which powers up Archie too. This feels like the most hopeless fight. I did see someone take it out at 450 strength with Lana, Swimsuit Misty, and Kris, but like...listen, I don't think that's a good idea on my end. It's a great solution for people trying to get one huge score to meet minimum requirements, but Swimsuit Misty feels very necessary on my end. There's also the unfortunate reality that neither comp can get us a confuse in. Crasher Wake would be the only remaining solution, but I don't really care to do that.

Overview 330k feels alright, given we're in top 200 at present. With an entire week left, I have no doubt I'll be pushed out of that bracket, but I'm satisfied regardless. I don't feel like putting in the resources, or the time, that would be necessary to compete at top 100. I'm not even sure I could. The current cutoff score is 344,658. I'd need at least 13k more points, which...look, maybe Marlon could shill out about half of that, but drawing another 7k from anywhere feels distinctly impossible without EXing Lana, and putting in a lot more for resets that I don't like doing. But there's another, perhaps more significant reason to not go for better.
