A bit of time to write before my weekend gets shot to hell.

He swallows over a tangled lump of sentiment and insecurity, running his boot over silverish globules that are puddled around the deck hatch. It looks like a shoddy welding job, like someone had given a drunk raccoon an iron, apron, and a smack in the rear to go wild. Not that it was Stan’s fault the machine was the only weapon he had been able to grab when that stupid Kraken decided to have a go at them in the middle of a freak lightning storm, wrapping its grubby tentacles around his brother’s waist like a possessive lover.

Ford and his damn monsters, Stan bites his lip, giving a small shake of his head.

It had been too damn close, the eight-legged monstrosity’s ravenous, single-eyed gaze fixated on his brother, who had been dangling upside-down in the creature’s greedy arms, spewing a bizarre mixture of Jersey-worthy profanities and Old Norse incantations he had picked up from a dog-eared, dusty volume dug out of the back shelves of an esoterica shop in Reykjavik.
