Summary: 2000s seemed to be quite the highlight between the fashion and the rise of pop culture. Seemingly the new faces of shock value, rapper Marshall Mathers and rockstar King Woods seem to find a common ground amongst the unnecessary bullshit.

2019 - Interview

"I understand that you're not the type to talk about your personal life, especially your relationship. If you could, how would you describe meeting your wife and her band?"

Marshall bites his lip in thought for a moment. He nods, agreeing with the idea, "meeting her? It was funny as hell. What I thought about her and the girls? They're hardcore, even to this day."

1999 - Vans Warped Tour

Fame was a peculiar bitch and for some odd reason, she continued to bless King and the girls. One of the greatest gifts they received was the privilege to be a part of the infamous pop-punk music festival, Vans Warped Tour. 

Following a lineup of bands who were as new as them while others were considered veterans in the industry. Not to forget, there were even a couple of non-alternative artists joining the fun. 

Playing the main stage, their hit song 'Down with the Sickness' received great reception as the crowd beautifully replicated King's belches. If there was one thing that made the girls wanna break face on stage was the obvious diversity in the crowd that screamed for them.

The amount of women, especially ones who resembled King and Tink. It was clear that the band's presence in the genre was creating a positive change that only a handful of minority artists tried to achieve. Reaching the end of their stage, they played 'You Spin Me Round'.

As usual the girls explored outside of their marked spots, interacting with the fans. King would let the crowd scream the lyrics into the mic with a smile, Harley erratically swung her head until she was dizzy, Maliyah was strumming from the top of the stereos while security watched with intensity, Iris was spraying the crowd and crew with water, and Tink was crowd surfing with the confetti filled balls. 

Unbeknownst to them, a nearly petrified Marshall watched from the side of the stage where he was guided to wait for his moment to walk on stage. Beside him stood Deshaun, who couldn't hold back his laugh. 

"Well shit, Doody," the taller man smiles. "How the hell are we gonna beat that? I ain't never seen some shit like that before."

Marshall shakes his head, "I feel sick." He tries to run off only to be stopped by his best friend. Deshaun shakes his head, "no, the fuck you're not. Come on, man, we've been waiting for this. You ain't that kid who'd choke up anymore, you're the shit, Doody."

Their eyes catch sight of the sweat drenched woman come off stage, however, King was sporting an open wound on her eyebrow as dots of blood decorate her eye. Despite the obvious mix of worry and confusion on her members' faces, the leader walked with a grin.

As they went to walk past Marshall and Deshaun, the blond couldn't help his curiosity. "Aye," he calls out, "are you okay?" 

The girls turn to look at him, just now realizing he was there. King nods, "yeah. If anything, this just a regular day for us." 

"You bleed on a regular?" Marshall raises an eyebrow. King laughs, "not so much that. I'm really clumsy and the hardcore scene doesn't make it any better."

Deshaun joins in, "we just saw. That was one hell of a show y'all put on, never seen some shit like that." Maliyah cheeses, "just you wait, getting caught up with the crowd is a lot easier than it seems."

Iris leans over King's shoulder, "are y'all new here? I don't think I've seen your faces before." Her Canadian accent was clear and thicker than a Snickers.

"Yeah, I'm Eminem, but you can call me Marshall and this is my hype man, Proof. We're rappers," the bleach blond introduces, gnawing on a piece of gum.

Tink raises an eyebrow, "oh so y'all some new, new faces." Marshall shrugs, "somethin' like that." Deshaun waves him off, "don't mind him, y'all. He gets a little on the fence when speaking about rapping, white boy and all."

"Why? You don't gotta act all like that," King shakes her head. "If there's anyone who really understands, it's us. Despite the bullshit you get for being white, man, go ahead and shove your foot up their asses."

Before Marshall could respond, a small smile peaking across his face, a yell interrupts them. "King?! Girls?! What the fucking Hell?" 

They all turn around to see a tall, bodybuilder like man runs over the group. At first, Marshall tenses, impulsively judging him to be King's boyfriend. 

Harley pulls a 'whoopsie' expression, "let's go to the principal office, kids." King laughs, explaining to the boys, "that's Theo, he's our manager/big brother. He's only 34, but we've caused all his hair to fall out in a matter of three months."

Marshall snorts, quickly looking away. In the meantime, the group of five walk over to the stressed out Theo in hopes of deescalating his heartbeat. Deshaun pulls Marshall to the stage after a technician gestures for them. 

"Let's go, Doody," he smirks. "We can find the hottie with the tats later." 

2019 - Interview

"Wait, cause I remember that day, too," King laughs. "The first time I met The Eminem, I nearly scared the shit out of him."

The interviewer laughs, clapping his hands. "So, the late 90s-early 2000s was the peak era for both of your careers. How did you guys socialize being a part of two different genres, different entourages?"

King rubs the palm of her hands, "well... that's a good question cause we've both had a lot going on at the time. For the remaining of the Warped Tour, we hung out, but afterwards, we relied on calling each other."

"Wasn't he also with Kim at this point, as well? How did you take the idea of him being taken?" 

"Yes, they were together. I believe, that was the first time that they got married," King nods. "However, at the time, I never really cared or saw him in a romantic or sexual way."

"Really? Why?"

She shrugs, "it's simple, really. As the girls and I were starting our career in a vulnerable spot, we were more focused on trying to appease the public and our fans than we were trying to build a social life in the industry."

"Like, Iris and Tink had their sweethearts riding hard for them whereas Maliyah was stressing over the well-being of her family, and Harley and I were just focused on being the best we could be."

"And by 'vulnerable spot' in your career, what do you mean by that?"

King raises her hand, showing off the tatted backside, "Tink and I are black, Maliyah's Mexican with indigenous roots, Harley is mixed with Vietnamese and it shows in her features, and Iris is a woman pursuing a career in alternative metal."

She continues, "despite how open the alternative culture is supposed to be, it is very white male dominated and we were taking a risk at pursuing our dreams. Hell, our record label was taking a huge fucking risk with us."

1999 - MTV VMAs

It just seemed as if gifts just keep giving this year. The girls were nominated for a few awards and given an opportunity to perform on the VMA stage. 

Working with an amazing, family-like team, the girls had faith in being styled as a group without looking uncoordinated. King was dressed in a black, lace corset that stopped at her midriff paired with skinny, ripped black jeans, black leather fur-lined trench coat and matching buckled platform boots.

Maliyah was in a long, tight dramatic mermaid dress with a trail that was lined with black fur. The right side consisted of a slit that showed off her thick, platform heels designed with lunar and solar gold markings. Tink was in a one shoulder laced corset with black skinny jeans and heeled boots.

Harley dawned a simple black tank with a leather fur-lined trench that dusted the back of her knees paired with black denim bellbottoms and pointed heeled boots. Iris wore a black lace bodice silk gown that ended at her knees paired with furry sandal heels.

Posing for the paparazzi, they each posed accordingly. King and Harley simply stared down the lens while Iris and Tink grinned like the perfect celebrities and Maliyah showed off a smirk. Moving on, a journalist calls the girls over in hopes for an interview.

"Hello, girls," the woman smiles over her mic. "You all look so beautiful, today. What's the inspiration and who's responsible?" 

Maliyah answers, "we simply just went off of who we are and what fits. Now, who's responsible will have to be our amazing team known as Hoodwinkle. They just really know how to balance alternative looks with street looks."

"Well, you ladies look amazing," the reporter nods. "So, I just wanted you a couple of questions, if you don't mind. First one, how are you feeling tonight since you're nominated in four categories?"

Harley shrugs, "we wanna feel confident, but in reality, we're practically shitting our pants." The others nod, laughing. Iris adds, "I can't lie, I don't think any of us prepared a speech just in case."

King waves her off, "at least it'll be authentic if we win." The reporter laughs, nodding, "true. Next one, are there any artists that you've been waiting to see?"

Tink claps her hands, "Ms. Lauryn Hill." The girls nod in agreement. King adds on, "Smash Mouth. Our boys, Blink-182. Who else?" Iris chimes in, "and TLC."

Harley snaps her fingers, accidentally snagging King's nose ring. "Oh, my bad," she laughs at the playful side-eye. "Isn't there a newbie performing tonight? His name sounds like some damn skittles or some."

"Eminem?" The reporter asks. The drummer nods, "yeah. We met the kid a couple months back during Warped Tour, he's cool as hell." 

King and the others nod in excitement. "Oh, yeah," the leader laughs. "Add his tiny ass to the list, that's our boy." The reporter laughs, hoping to receive a story from the new information.

"So, you guys said that you met the rapper just recently, right?" She rhetorically asks. "What's he like? Is he as vulgar as his lyrics? How does he treat you since you're women?"

Immediately, the energy shifts as the girls take noticeable step from the journalist and her camera guy. Harley, Iris, and Tink shake their heads walking off whereas Maliyah tries to drag an agitated King with them. 

"First off, he's a cool ass guy who just wants to make music. Everyone is entitled to their own creative space, that's why things like songwriting and comic books aren't taught in school. They're considered creative works," King retorts. 

"And he's a gentleman who doesn't take bullshit, so piss off." She finally states, moving along with Maliyah. The reporter shrinks back in shock, not expecting a woman to come to his defense publicly.

Soobin Is Leading TOMORROW X TOGETHER with Positivity

The leader of TXT opens up about the group's current chapter

This week, in compliment with our TOMORROW X TOGETHER cover story, we’ll be rolling out individual spotlights on each member of the K-pop act. Today, we spend some time with the group’s leader, Soobin. Soobin, the leader of TOMORROW X TOGETHER, is a very tall young man. Most of the members of the group tower over their peers in the K-pop world — three of the band members clear six feet — and Soobin has them all beat.

Sitting in a hotel room in Osaka, Japan, it’s almost as if Soobin, cozy in black sweatpants and a matching T-shirt, is unaware of this fact. With his stature, he could presumably be intimidating if he wanted to be; instead, he’s unfailingly polite and remarkably sweet. He bows to shake my hand as he sits down, offering an off-the-record recommendation for an anime on Netflix as we get comfortable. Soobin is soft-spoken enough that the interpreter in the room with us sometimes has to lean in to catch his responses. He dips his head again when he gets up at the end of our conversation.

“I’m not usually the talkative type,” he says, smiling shyly. “I don’t know how to make things flowery and eloquent.”

According to his bandmates, though, Soobin’s leadership strength isn’t dependent on locution. “Soobin is in charge of communications, and we can look into each other’s eyes when we are rehearsing and tell just from that how we’re feeling,” fellow TXT member Taehyun explains. For the group, the concept of communication extends beyond public-facing comments and speaking responsibilities.

At 22 years old, Soobin is not the oldest member of the group — that would be 23-year-old Yeonjun — but when TXT debuted in 2019, he was introduced to the world as the leader nonetheless. This is not uncommon in K-pop, as this title and its responsibilities often have more to do with personality than age. Soobin seems to be a generally agreeable person who is comfortable with taking a backseat a lot of the time, as he does when his bandmates are in the room the day we all meet.

That laid back attitude extends to his downtime, as well. In the past, a day off for Soobin would involve a lot of “watching animation lying down.” Recently, though, free time means spending the day with friends, catching up on movies, or going swimming. He’s also trying to become a better cook; one of his more recent endeavors was dakbokkeumtang, a Korean dish of braised spicy chicken.

He strives for improvement onstage as well, growing more confident in areas he used to find more challenging. Particularly after completing TXT’s first world tour (2022’s “ACT: LOVE SICK”), Soobin says he’s noticeably refined his public speaking: “I feel so grateful to our fans and I feel so happy during the tour, but I always get nervous at the end when I’m talking,” he notes. “But, recently, I realized my words and speeches became more organized.” He laughs. “I think I became kind of cool.”

With his bandmates, however, coolness also means knowing when to hold things back. Despite the closeness between the members of TXT, Soobin reveals that he tries not to add more pressure on the members than is absolutely necessary. “There are actually things that I cannot tell my members because they’re my members,” he explains. “Being the leader, I sometimes worry about things that could make them feel pressured, and with such things, I tend to open up to my other friends.”

That includes adding to the weight of their upcoming headlining slot at Lollapalooza; but, rather than focus on the immensity of the stage, he’s reveling in the excitement these days. Soobin happily recalls that when he first told his songwriter and producer friends about their 2022 appearance at the festival, “They said, ‘I’m so jealous, it’s driving me crazy… But it was a cute jealousy. This time, when we heard the news that we were headlining, I couldn’t wait to tell them.”

As effortless as Soobin may appear as a performer, there’s no doubt he and the TXT team have put in the hard work to earn that Lollapalooza billing. Beyond detailed rehearsals, all the members are involved behind the scenes of the group’s ever-evolving musical direction, too. Soobin has a songwriting credit on the group’s most recent album, the bouncy, bright “Happy Fools” featuring Coi Leray, while “Tinnitus (Wanna be a rock)” and “Farewell, Neverland” are described by the members as group efforts thematically. The band’s longtime studio collaborator, HYBE producer Slow Rabbit, calls Soobin and his bandmates “pioneers for the next generation of artists and fans, especially for Gen Z.”

To Soobin, his ability to connect with people stems from the fact that he grew up a K-pop fan long before becoming a K-pop idol. That sentiment allows him to relate to TXT’s fans, known as MOA, and it’s a connection Soobin doesn’t take lightly. “Being a fan turned me into a positive person, and I only experienced positive changes as a K-pop fan,” he explains. “So to our fans, and the people who like me, I want only positive things to happen to them. I hope that they can experience positive changes.”

It’s only been four years since TXT debuted, and the group has already achieved headliner status at a major American music festival. If he were to chat with Soobin of 2019, back when TOMORROW X TOGETHER were freshly debuted, he says that he wouldn’t want to change a thing about their story so far: “I did the best I could at that time,” he recalls. “I wouldn’t want to do anything that would affect present me, because I’m so satisfied with present me. I just hope past Soobin walks the path that I walked, exactly the way I did.”

Never seen ultraman

What should I watch first to see if I like it or not?

Ultraman is a tokusatsu series with a very large variety of tones and styles. Each season is distinctly different from the last, especially in the New Generation era. Some seasons are very serious and gritty, some are slice-of-life, and some are light plot/heavy action. It's up to you on what you'd prefer!

I want to preface with the three eras (and sub eras) of Ultraman, just so you're aware of these terms when they come up:

Showa (1966 - 1987)

Heisei (1996 - 2012)

-> Heisei Trilogy/Part 1 (1996-1999)

-> Heisei Part 2/Phase 2 (2000 - 2012)

New Generation (2013 - Present)

-> Reiwa (2019 - Present)

That being said, I give you 5 equally valid options to begin:

Option 1:

Ultraman (1966)

Start with where it all began!*

Ultraman (1966) is Japan's take on the Twilight Zone but with a superhero-esqe twist. If you enjoy older sci-fi like the early seasons of Doctor Who or the first Star Trek, you'll greatly appreciate the practical effects, deep but episodic plots, and the unique kaiju/seijin.

From there, watch in order of release and enjoy just how much the show evolves. All the highs and lows.

*(Side note - technically Ultra Q (1966) is the first show but does not feature Ultraman whatsoever. This show serves as a prequel to the idea of kaiju and seijin in the modern world. If you're a completionist, you can start here and be amazed at how there are *still* monsters and plots making reappearances from this show)

Option 2:

Ultraman Tiga (1996)

Ultraman Tiga is the beginning of the Heisei Era and is widely regarded as one of the best series in the entire franchise.

I have lots of love to give to Tiga specifically, and this post of mine explains why that is:

Option 3:

Ultraman Mebius (2006)

Ultraman Mebius is the 40th anniversary of the Ultra series and is a beautiful continuation and love-letter of the Showa Era timeline. It features returning cast members, monsters, and plotlines from Ultraman, Ultraseven, Jack, Ace, Taro, Leo, and 80 (which all take place on the same Earth).

This show is a perfect introductory piece to the series because it exposes you to such a large amount of lore from the past while recontextualizing it with modern effects, richer storytelling, and a more serious tone. Mebius has so much heart, happiness, and hopefulness. It's a very positive and "heroic" type show.

Option 4:

Ultraman Orb (2016)

Ultraman Orb is, even while nestled in the near-middle of the New Gen Era, a fantastic starting piece and my typical recommendation for starters. It's quite fun and light-hearted but has an intense emotional core surrounding lost love and a broken friendship. The action and special effects are top-notch, and the main villain is an ICONIC character who pops up many times in later shows.

This show introduces fusions, which become a frequent New Gen trend (Orb does it the best of all). Great choice if you're looking to get dropped somewhere not too confusing or plot-intensive yet still action-y and engaging.

Ultraman Blazar (2023)

Ultraman Blazar is the newest season of Ultraman and started airing back in July. As of writing this, we are currently at Episode 8.

Blazar is unique and inventive so far in both its plot and aesthetic. It has a semi-serious sci-fi/military feel mixed with amazing new kaiju and.... a really strange Ultra lol. Blazar is unlike most thus far. He's primitive and beastly, kinda like a caveman.

It may not be the most completely accurate representation of the series as a whole, but nothing beats the excitement of watching the newest season as it airs!! The Tsuburaya official YouTube channel simulcasts each new episode as it airs in Japan (with japanese or english audio and subs).

Theres this game that came out in 2019, and 2 days after i started playing it (on the day it came out) i got this… dread or fear or whatever you wanna call it that my favorite character (who is probably my favorite character of all time but thats another story i think.) was going to die at the end of the game.

I still dont know where that feeling came from.

And now for the past 5+ years i have not been able to actually beat the game. Like ill play the campaign up until its only the final boss remaining and then i just wont play past that point. I really would like to finish the game but the fear stops me every time.

A/N: Hey online strangers, I wrote the first part a while back and have the rest of the story in my drive but have never posted it. This story I wrote way back in 2019 :'(. … I am back lol. I have no idea who even is enjoying this but yeah. I wrote this during finals so please excuse everything from it. From the grammar to the plot lol. I shall maybe edit it or something. Honestly didn’t this story needed more parts or anything and plus I am trying my hardest to make into a your name type without writing yourr name cause I never found it cute and plus whenever I read a yn i read out the yn has like yoon for some reason. So yeah

Tension seemed to vibrate in the small cab, unlike the music slowly playing in the background their beating hearts seemed to rage louder. The sound of the bustling town waking up, the streets retreating for the night as the walk of shamers running back to their own homes.

All the stolen glances and accidental touches that emerged from that cap ride burned them brighter than the crack of dawn arising in the back. At each brush, unbearable to one another they shifted in their seats. She couldn’t breathe she thought. Concentrate, concentrate, she repeated.

Her smell intoxicated him, his desire to touch her was especially unbearable and the butterflies in his stomach did not help. At each glance, it seemed more and more like a free fall into her beautiful eyes, what was happening to him? This pull she had on him, he could not put it into words. How could he? He was slowly and idiotically falling in love with a stranger. How could one explain this?

As they arrived at the ER parking lot, the taxi driver glanced at them through the mirror and smiled to himself, “That will be 20 $ miss.”

“She’s going to be late.”

“Why? I NEED my coffee.”

“Well, calm down princess. She called me saying she was bringing in someone she hit or something.” The brunette in her blue scrubs sat down at her desk. She had quickly finished her morning rounds for this casualty that her friend had picked up. She really didn’t understand her rambling earlier, but she had prepared a corner room.

“Do not worry I will bring you your coffee first thing.”

“Please.” He whined, “Do not make me drink this.” Gesturing to his surroundings.” place sewer water that passes for coffee.” She giggled.

“Yes, sir” Kissing him before leaving for his own rounds.

Lizzy had finished her residency two years prior, while her beautiful, caffeine addict finance had just entered his. As a non-traditional medical school graduate, he was older than most of his peers, but that never stopped him. And she loved him for that.

She was the friendly, bubbly, sunshine of a resident and he was the nerd, shy and quiet second-year med student. Everyone thought it could never work, how could it? Opposite attract only in films, however, their love flourished, continued, and survived.

She started to replay the conversation she had with her best friend. She hit someone, she thought. At this hour she would already be in her office answering her emails. She did say she was coming by cab.

“By cab, by cab … by cab.” She couldn’t connect any dots, her friend bringing in someone by cab that she hit at the coffee shop. She quickly shook her head and laughed it off. It couldn’t be that bad, could it? If it was, she would have called 911.

Her thoughts were interrupted by Nancy, her favourite nurse, telling her about this admission at the front desk.

She smiled at her, thinking today really is filled with mysteries. Why would Nancy come all this way and not page her? First off, she did not deal with admitting any patients.

Nancy’s little giggles and smile while walking to the front desk should have been a telling sign. She should have known. She should have known that her best friend was not only clumsy but as unlucky as it comes or in this case lucky.

Seeing a little crowd gathering around someone, she wondered if it was a code blue. “I didn’t hear any code blues”, questioning the nurse to her left.

“Ahhh, that’s the thing I forgot to tell you on the phone.” She looked at her best friend in the corner with the coffees and pastries in hand looking flustered if that was even possible.

Taking some of the drinks and pastries off her hands, “You should probably take care of him soon before the whole hospital figure outs who he is."

Lizzy was about to question her friend but before she could the crowd around this mysterious person slowly dispersed allowing her to finally see him. Words could not form; she was shocked, flabbergasted, and astonished at the person in front of her. All the thoughts ran through her head. Her friend is an angel, a clumsy angel. Life brings you lemons, in this case Chris Evans lemons and somehow she had to make lemonade. But also, she had to keep her composure, she was a professional. She dealt with things far beyond one’s imagination, she was not going to let her favourite celebrity change that.

“Hii” giggling her composure long gone. Her friend looked at her, her eyes said everything. Get your shit together, I assaulted a man that needs help. Lizzy mouthed back I am sorry but that’s Chris Fudging Evans. The glare that her friend gave her could pierce any shield. Sighing. Lizzy tried her best to be professional. She straightened herself up and gestured to Chris to the room.

“Follow me please, we will go somewhere where there won’t be much commotion.”

“And you are coming with me to explain what happened.” Her friend was about to protest but Lizzy gave her a look that said she could not run away. She was going to try though.

“I will be there in a sec; I’ll just go give Oliver his coffee.” She looked down at her shoes scared that she was going to get caught in her attempt to escape. “He must really be needing his coffee right about now.” She continued, taking the drinks, and running away before she could get an answer.

“Well, Ms. Evans, it seems like it’s just you and me. You will have to explain what happened to end up here.” Lizzy was over the moon at what she just said, not in a million years did she ever think she would be saying these words.

“It is a funny story”, Chris said not thinking this day would end up like this when he only wanted to go for a quick run before his shoot. Which reminds him to text his assistant that he would be late today.

His phone kept vibrating during the examination, he had texted his assistant that he had to quickly go to the hospital. Without adding much information as to why, she must be worried.

“You can answer your phone if you would like”, Lizzy had almost finished her checkup. Her friend hadn’t hit him that hard. And he didn’t have any scratches or neurological problems. He was good to go.

“We are almost done.” She sat down typing on her computer, while he put his shirt back on. She had to take a few moments to regain herself. God that man was beautiful. So is her finance but damn beauty is beauty, right? She shook her head.

“Do you have any questions for me?”

“You are good to go but if you want to ask questions, I am all ears.” She doubted he would, she was honestly trying to stall as much as she could for her friend to come and they could have the room.

Earlier, she witnessed something very intriguing, and she wanted to confirm it before he left.

“Oli, I come bringing gifts.” She entered his office. He had been spinning around his chair for the past 5 minutes now.

“Here, you need it don’t you.”

“My angel.” In all of his joy he sat up and grabbed the coffee and the pastries from her hands. Finally, he thought.

The sweet, sweet taste of coffee. He was happy.

She stood there looking at her friend enjoying his treats, wishing that he wouldn’t notice her still standing there.

Time seemed to pass slowly, she kept looking at her watch every few seconds, counting in her head how long it would take Izzy to finish up. She was honestly concerned about nothing. Why couldn’t she just go to her office?

“Heyy,, uhmm Lizzy just texted me.”

“It’s an emergency. You need to go see her.” He lied; Lizzy had actually texted him to make up an excuse so you could go back to the ER as fast as you could.

Squinting her eyes, she wondered what a medical physicist could possibly help out in the ER. Knowing very well that if any of the X-rays broke her supervisor would be the first to be called. Defeated, she decided to go hoping by the time she reached Lizzy he would be gone.

She just left. Care to explain? He quickly texted before replying to a few emails.

Thank you, and yes I will. Lunch?

Yes! Have a good day love. He put his phone down and went back to work.

Maqui de hierro Jardín 2005, Self-released (Bandcamp)

Peru’s Buh Records was the subject of a lavish Pitchfork feature last year, which introduced me to a lot of cool Latin American avant garde artists on the label’s roster. Most of their releases that I’ve checked out have been ‘70s-era reissues, but one that jumped out at me was a late ‘90s to early ‘00s noise/techno duo called Jardín. In the piece, the label’s founder Luis Alvarez says meeting them “opened up a whole musical universe that I didn’t know. Jardín’s music was like an epiphany for me.” You can tell from the way Alvarez talks about them, and the gushing liner notes on this 2019 reissue of their third/fourth (the liners can’t decide which) cassette release from 2005, that he has a personal investment in keeping their memory alive—the kind of heart’s fav that makes someone start a label in the first place. I think anyone who has spent time in an art scene has their own archive full of brilliant unknowns, artists who maybe ruled the city for a year before fizzling out, people who dazzled at open mics and then got a full-time job at Shopify, leaving no publishable utterances behind.

So, I had a degree of preloaded affection for the band before I even listened to them, but I’m happy to second Alvarez that these guys ruled. Hard electronic that sorta sits on the border between techno and power noise, the liners make reference to the influence of Andean Indigenous drumming and the use of ocarinas (originally a Mesoamerican instrument) but I don’t find that Maqui de hierro (Iron Maqui, a type of Chilean berry) reads as explicitly “ethnic fusion” music. If I were listening blind, I’d’ve likely guessed they were German, Spanish, American, or even Montreal’s own before getting down the atlas to Peru—actually, I’d probably have given up, told you they were extremely sick, and then pulled my hoodie up and kind of bobbed up and down in place while staring at the ground.

Recorded mostly live or in their studio space, these are roiling concrete and metal constructions. The opening tracks are the most conventionally danceable, percolating techno rhythms and warlike bass drones kicking it beneath an upper atmosphere of slashing static and endless delay. “Perfume de ceniza” (“Ash Perfume”) in particular goes extremely hard, with this thrilling rill of digital distortion in its midst that sounds like a laser shark’s fin sheering through an ocean of metal. Both LP sides gradually descend into harsher, more experimental murk, still rhythmic though the irregular beats are now localized on a singular position, like a malfunctioning compressed air hammer trying to batter a crooked plate flat. I have to imagine Jardín played this stuff live at ear-bleeding volume, but with the stereo knob in your own hand at home you’re free to enjoy the wild variety of textures they tease out of their ratking of pedals, switchboards, and wires. The 15-minute “Serpientes de humo” reveals their Latin influences most clearly, with spooky ocarina trills like forlorn bird calls and some ritualistic percussion passages peeping through the maelstrom.

Kudos to Buh for keeping the memory of a cool project alive—highly recommend adventurous listeners take a trawl through the rest of the label's catalogue, there are a ton of gems to discover.

Album Review:

All My Heroes Are Cornballs (JPEGMAFIA, 2019)

(First Listen)

JPEGMAFIA is an artist who has been on my radar for a very long time. I asked some friends of him who know more about him than I do what I should check out, and this album narrowly won out. I've heard a little bit from Peggy; Scaring The Hoes, Hazard Duty Pay, Bald, Baby I'm Bleeding, among others, so I went into this album expecting something high energy. This album was decisively not high energy, but I absolutely loved every second of it.

I was absolutely blown away by the production on this album. Someone I know once said that the music sounds like it's falling apart, and that is a sentiment I agree with. The production is the musical equivalent of walking on crutches. On songs like Kenan Vs. Kel or Lifes Hard, Here's A Song About Sorrel, the samples sound like they are dying before your ears, and while these things may seem like complaints on the surface, they are anything BUT complaints. It sounds fucking incredible, on every song; the production is nothing like I've ever heard before in my life.

Peggy's lyricism on this album is about what I would expect from him, at least with what I've heard from him before this, though I enjoyed the moments on songs like Thot Tactics where he rapped from the perspective of a woman; I found that unique. What impressed me, however, was his vocal range. Peggy does a lot of singing on this album, with him even having an entire song dedicated to covering an old TLC track. I was very surprised by the range on display here, and I think it lends itself to the soundscape of this album very well. The mixing is jarring and inconsistent, with vocals often being overpowered by the instrumentals, but I feel this was done by design, and it was done very well.

If I could find one complaint with this album worthy of being brought up here, it is that a lot of the songs seemingly end just as I'm getting into the groove of them. I feel this issue is most prominent on Lifes Hard; just as I feel myself really getting into the way that song sounds and feels, it ends with little fanfare. It doesn't take away from my enjoyment to a significant degree, but it is something I take issue with on some of these tracks.

I went into All My Heroes Are Cornballs expecting an album completely different from what I got, but it was pulled off so masterfully well that I honestly can't bring myself to complain about that. I am curious to see how the rest of JPEGMAFIA's discography stacks up to this album.

Overall:

Good enough, especially the heart of episode 6 but not something I'll be thinking about at all. The characters didn't resonate a whole lot, this focused a lot on just fighting scenes (more than like strategizing, being clever, etc, which is usually what I'm a fan of), the defeat of the villains wasn't really satisfying at all - especially with how cruel episode 6 went down. Also, I don’t ship Geonwoo and Woojin, sadly.

I wanted to detail my experience with XP-Pen and trying to buy new nibs because it has been so dumb. and i want to vent about it because it has given me a headache.

So i lost track of my replacement nibs and the nib on my current pen has been loose for about 2 months now. And earlier today i was tapping my pen to the beat of the song i was listening to, and the nib was just suddenly gone.

After spending 15 minutes on my hands and knees trying to look for it i realized that it was gone for good this time. So fuck. Alright well, i guess i'll have to order more since i can't find the replacements that came with the tablet back in 2019.

So i try to amazon prime some replacement nibs, as much as i fucking hate the concept of giving jeffery bozos any of my fucking money. that two day shipping sounds way better then having to wait a month for replacements.

Wow these do not fucking look right, despite apparently being for my pen.

I'm not shelling out 25$ for a set of replacements that likely aren't going to work for my pen. so it looks like i'm going to have to go buy some from the manufacturer directly.

That's a lot of fucking options. That's fair, i guess they wouldn't make a new type of pen for every model. So instead of scrolling down to see if they had a way of finding out what kind of pen i had. i decided to look and see if the store page for my tablet said what kind of pen i have.

And i don't see a model number. Just "Battery-free Stylus"

Alright i'll just look up what Pens they have, and see which ones theyre for. and i narrow it down to two Pens.

So i'm like "I got it, support will know. I'll call them." Their call center's bot tells me that they don't do phone calls right now (or something along those lines. the bot was really hard to hear for some reason.) and to press the green help button on their contact page for help.

Where? Are they closed?? its only 12pm. Well thats not going to help, And i really don't want to email them. Not for any good reason, i just don't want to do the back and forth and end up having a wait an extra day or two waiting for the nibs.

That's when i'm looking at the nibs to see if maybe i should just take the plunge and throw 20 bucks at nibs that might not work. and contact them during that period. Thats when i notice this.

September 2019: DSOD world and box came out at the tail end of September, with it Dark Magician support came in many form with both the box “Dark Dimension” and the structure deck “Master of Chaos” as thus take this with a grain of salt as people wasn’t able to fully discover everything from Dark Dimension and Master of Chaos in the 4 days before October. For both Dark Magician builds and Master of Chaos builds most decks were just using beatdown for their skill, however Master of Chaos had a few people using Neos Space instead as they value the constant attack boost for Neos fusion rather than just on player phase. These decks aren’t good per say but they can get the job done at the time, in other words they are fine.

Let’s go over Master of Chaos as it was mainly being used alongside the Neos fusion engine, reason being that since Neos is a level 7 normal monster; he can be used in advanced ritual art. Some builds of Master of Chaos also used Aleister the Invoker because well Master of Chaos was already mainly being used as a fusion deck anyway. The game plan is to either A turbo out a neos fusion with Keeper of Dragon Magic or B use Magician of Chaos to control the game and win the resource game till you get Neos fusion or another advanced Ritual spell. They also had Bacon Saver to stop an attack and A/D Changer to beat over high attack monsters because at the time not many monsters had high defense. Bacon Saver and A/D Changer would be dumped into the grave usually by Neos fusion or as discard fodder for Keeper of Dragon Magic.

Dark Magician builds were not so consistent. The only common thing is rod, DM, Illusion magic and Magician Navigation. Magician of Dark Illusion was seen in some builds but generally the other stuff was random spellcasters monster and generic staple of the time like Drowning Mirror Force, World Legacy Clash, and etc. The game plan is just to turbo out DM and hope that you can swarm fast and strong enough to beatdown your opponent. Reminder 4 days before October.

October 2019: The first real month of DSOD DM. For Master of Chaos, not much has changed as Neos engine was just that good with Master of Chaos. But they did experiment with the skill “Master of Rites”, otherwise there isn’t much difference besides some build trying to make the fusion or ritual more consistent. Meanwhile Dark Magician builds experimented more with skills like “Light and Dark”, “Seal Tombs” and Ties that Bind. More Dark Magician builds were also willing to use Palladium Oracle Mahad because he can be a free special summon on draw, double attack on dark type monster was also really nice; and Eye of Timaeus for the DM extra deck. Instead of random spellcasters people also started using more magician girls as extra main deck monsters. These decks are still mediocre at best.

November 2019: DM would change due to a lot of generic nerfs like Beatdown, Light and Dark; but given a buff like Master of Rites announced in october. However because the power level kept getting higher, DM decks were less viable. Magician girls and Dark Calvary took a life of their own mostly without DM. DM builds would mostly stay the same however started using silent magician and Destiny Draw while dropping beatdown. But DM was in its worst condition power wise so far in its DSOD run as again the power level kept increasing. At least Dark Cavalry manage to make it to top 100 in the kc event this month…. Only one build without DM but a win is a win.

Master of Chaos finally had some builds without Neos engine but it was still few, in this newer build it used DM and the generic ritual searchers or they would try the normal DM build but remove the generic staples to have room for Master of Chaos stuff. These newer builds stopped using Beatdown and just jumped on the Master of Rite train thanks to the buff and a few used show of nightmare. But man this deck was so bad that they started commonly using power of the guardian equip spell. Which is the biggest sign that your deck is bad at the time.

December 2019: DM would see a sudden uprise from November lows. People started to notice Dark Cavalry and Magician Girls but Magician of Chaos builds would go down and mainly stuck to Neos Engine once again. As Magician Girls focused builds have detached themselves from Dark Magicians pretty much we won’t be talking about them unless they do have a strategy involving DM in some way. DM builds would get a significant buff on the 31 of December however we aren’t going to talk about this till January because this is literally a build that exists 14 hours before 2020, it might as well be a January build at that point. But before the 31st DM was pretty much the same as it was in November with build more so using Destiny Draw. Finally we have Dark Cavalry who is the biggest winner for DM this month, which is mostly just Neos engine but cheating out Dark Calvary and Millennium-Eyes Restrict using magicalized fusion and the dark hex seal fusion. Dark Cavalry would use skills like switcheroo and Neos space while testing the deck out with No Mortal Can Resist and Master of Fusion. Overall this is when DM finally start to get good.
