Hi Pia
I think i remember you saying once that you read bl comics / manwha and was wondering what sites you use? I've been to a number of sites but all of the english 'translations' are nonsensical and make no sense. I honestly think they just feed the text into google translate instead of hiring people who actually know english. But I still really want to read them.
Could you recommend where I can read bl manwha with legitimate English translation?
I would really appreciate it. Thank you
Hi anon!
So you have two choices.
The first is that you pay for licensed BL and Manhwa on sites like Tappytoons, Lezhin and similar for professionally done English translations. There's a metric fuckton of them. It can get expensive fast, but there's usually hacks to increase the amount of coins you can spend for free, though you will still have to generally pay to keep up with more than one at a time.
The second is that you use illegal sites. I am not - for what should be really obvious reasons - going to tell you where / what they are. What I will say is that English translations on illegal sites are often fan-made and so are very hit and miss. For example, organisations like Zinfandel are famously terrible (and do plug into translators), and then you have other translators who are extremely professional and in some cases better than the official translations. In that, it's hit/miss, you get what you don't pay for, basically, and you have to be willing to sort through what you're looking at.
Obviously I'm not going to tell you where to find options in the second category - if you want legitimate translation, you have to pay for it, either through purchasing hard-copy BL manga (i.e. paperbacks), or purchasing coins and episodes through official websites. Alternatively, you can request published English BLs like Doukyuusei by Asumiko Nakamura through your library.
If you want legitimate translations, you go to legitimate places, it's really that simple.

hey this is chance and here’s week 4’s prompt. how do strangers within the world view your protagonists? how would they describe them? and how does this contrast against how the protagonist views themself?
Wow this is late!! Sorry about all that--I moved cross-country lol. I busted out the mechanical keyboard to give me the motivation to finally get around to these asks!!
Anyways, James is definitely one of those characters that have a lot of different faces depending on how you look at him (this is even AFTER you discount how the people who actually know him view him). If you're pro-navy, you'll definitely see him in a different way than if you're Inathid or Caladian or some random schmuck who doesn't know about nor care about the latest news regarding the world's resident hegemonic ex-empire.
What we have from James is that he went from a kid, to the admiral of the infamous Navy, to a defectee, to an international pirate terror (he SAYS he only targets Navy ships, but well...). Depending on how news-savvy folks are, they might hate him for being a coward (pro-navy), or hate him for being a gross sell-out (anti-navy), or hate him for replacing one bad with another bad (neutral/average joe?). You might love him for being courageous and breaking out of the navy! You might love him for how his piracy directly benefits your shops' sales or political ambitions! You might love him because he TRIED to do "good" things while he was admiral, but be ultimately disappointed that he didn't end up sticking.
I'd say in general, most strangers hate or dislike him. Whether it's because of his navy involvement, his piracy, his heritage, the propaganda, or a combination thereof, you ask anyone about "Captain Kirkland" and you'll hear a whole lot of "I hope that little Chaosmaker rots below the seas with his damned ship."
There's a good portion of those who are neutral on him, simply because what he's doing doesn't affect him. If they don't have a lot of Ridinian involvement (like Kafri or Ametok, for example), they just aren't affected by things trade-wise or politically. They might think of James the way most people these days think of Blackbeard: Yes I know of him, but so what? His mythos is kind of cool, I guess, so long as you don't think too deeply about the atrocities.
And then there's another good portion of people who think that James is the bees' knees (hi hello I'm James' number one fan, PR head, personal lawyer, and also judger).
James on the other hand...likes to delude himself into thinking that most people love him. He likes to think that everyone knows how bad the Navy is, or that they hate it as much as he himself does, and so when he takes down Navy ships/destroys naval bases then everyone is cheering him on. In the back of his mind, he knows what people think of him, but like...he's not able to contend with that. So might as well lie to yourself, right!! It doesn't help that he tends to only really stay in areas where people are more sympathetic to him and surround himself with people who are also sympathetic to him.
If he isn't loved by everyone, if everyone isn't on his side, then What the Hell is He Doing All of This For?
It makes for some pretty uncomfortable encounters when he has to face the fact that he's ruining things more clawing his way towards an (ill-directed) revenge.
If you asked someone to describe James, they would say: "A corrupt pirate with a vendetta against Elan Rid
He needs to be stopped."
I wish he could have left us out of it."
I hope he gives Elan Rid what they deserve."
If you asked James to describe himself, he would say: "The one and only person in these damned isles who knows what the Navy really is, and the only one cursed to do something about it."
