The M2 Helmet and A Journey into Ivan's Insanity
When the United States military decided to invest in parachute forces they determined that the standard M1 helmet adopted in 1941 would require some modification for airborne use. They developed the M2 helmet for this purpose, which featured rounded rather than squared chinstrap loops (sometimes called “D bails”), while the chinstrap itself was modified to snap into the helmet's liner. The M1 helmet's liner was modified with an additional chinstrap and snaps for the shell’s chinstrap. These modifications were intended to keep the helmet secure during the violence of a parachute jump. Late in the war they modified the paratrooper helmet again, the most salient difference being that they replaced the spot-welded and fragile fixed chinstrap loops with more durable "swivel" loops.
The M2 helmet is rare--made by the thousand when its regular counterpart was made by the million--fabulously desirable, fabulously expensive, and constantly faked.
But there is a decent market for honest vendors to sell replicas as replicas for mortals who can't spend five figures on a real one, sometimes using genuine WWII or postwar M1 helmets and liners as a base, sometimes 100% new manufacture.
Enter the lunacy that follows:
Many months ago the company At the Front listed some Inland liners done up in the paratrooper helmet configuration. What do any of those words mean? The Inland Division of General Motors manufactured the liners for M2 paratroopers helmets in 1942 (they also made the M1A1 paratrooper carbines) in addition to helmet liners for the regular M1 (they also made regular M1 carbines). Inland stopped making all helmet liners during the war (I see different dates given for this; they stopped in 1942, 43, or 44).
Inland liners are comparatively rare, airborne or otherwise. Because even regular Inland liners were made in somewhat smaller numbers than other makers and perhaps especially because the regular ones can be used as a base to replicate paratrooper liners, they are desirable to collectors. Replica paratrooper helmets tend to have Inland "style" features, but it’s tough to get a real Inland liner as your base. I do not even dream of acquiring a genuine WWII paratrooper helmet, but I have wanted to have a replica that uses a real Inland liner as its base for years. So I bought the ATF one.
However, when it arrived, many of the details were incorrect. It had the wrong color A-washers and the wrong color snaps in the neck strap and the wrong headband buckle type (Ivan what do these words mean??). I thought I could tolerate it but I could not.
Enter a guy named Josh Murray up in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, who restores and replicates the M1 helmet family. Josh is a meticulous cat and he does good work. It also helps that he's just a good guy who's fun to hang out and shoot the shit with. So I emailed our man Josh and explained my lunatic plight, and I sent him my liner for him to fix, which he did.
These are all details you only see if you look at the inside, and you only notice if you are insane. ATF used green A washers, which is correct for later in the war. For a 1942 Inland liner, they should be plain steel. ATF's neck strap used blackened snaps, correct for later in the war. A 1942 neck strap should have nickel plated snaps. The leather headband on Josh's reconfiguration has the early war "wire" adjusting loops, rather than the toothed style of a later helmet.
And finally, the buckle on the chinstrap that runs along the top there is flat and green; later buckles flip up at the end, and later ones still are black. Other "Inland" features include thin blackened wire buckles securing the chin cup and OD 3 rather than OD 7 "A yokes." All these words mean something if you are into US WWII helmets.
None of this is to denigrate ATF, from whom I buy often. But even though ATF sells helmets, you should buy helmets from Josh Murray. He didn't pay me to say that, but he's a good guy and he does good work. He also did the shell, in the M2 style using a WWII era front seam shell to which he added “D bails” and the correct WWII style paint and texture. Here it is all assembled, at long last:
Here's the website again if you’re in the market for an M1 helmet.

The technology for hand washing before sinks was a bowl and pitcher. You poured the water into the bowl first and splashed your hands in it like bath. If you actually had hot water boiled, you might cut it down to temperature with a separate cold water pitcher. Then you tossed the dirty water. Sometimes there would be an installed basin with a drain, but you still filled it from a pitcher. (Or it was a utility sink connected to a well hand pump.)
So when bathroom sinks are first introduced, people used separate hot and cold taps to fill the (usually shallow) sink. The faucets were set to the back (and usually lower pressure than today) so that the washer had easy access to the basin without moving around it.
Flowing water is more sanitary, so as people adjusted to continuously flowing water over the next several decades, it became more common to wash your hands under the flow instead of into the basin. Which the faucets way at the back do not do well (as OP points out).
But the Aesthetic™ of the bathroom faucet had been established. The hot and cold taps were combined into one output (eventually with a temperature regulator to prevent burns). And later the single leaver adjusting both temperature and flow was introduced. But many times the conveniences were forgone for established aesthetics harkening back to older times. And the short faucet has been particularly stubborn.
Bowl shape is another factor. A symmetrical bowl makes sense if you're filling it. A flat back makes more sense if you're running your hands under the water. But again older aesthetics often win. Combined with higher water pressure, a symmetrically round bowl is perfect for creating a half-pipe to drench you.
So now we jabber a series of aesthetics about How A Bathroom Sink Should Look that entirely rely on what made sense for older use cases but are not optimal for how we use them now. And since many designers aren't thinking that hard about how a sink will ideally function, and instead about it's visual vibes, we get sinks with annoyingly shallow faucets you can't get your hands under and sink bowls that launch water at you.
But most of the people connected to the daily function of their environment and the home as a finely ruined machine, are prevented by capitalism from owning their environments and changing them. So we get things that other people think look good and inoffensively bland, and not things that make our lives easier and joyful. Just the same mindless design manufactured thoughtlessly for 50 years, except to get cheaper and shittier. While the rich get expensive avant garde designer sinks that break norms and actually do solve the problem.
why are bathroom sinks designed like that. infuriating
#TLDR nostalgia and capitalism#OP I know this was a silly shitpost but it fit one of my special interests to well to not explain#sinks#plumbing history#architecture

How to Prepare Your Car for Auto Painting in Fort Lauderdale
Preparing your car for auto painting is a crucial step that can significantly impact the final result of the paint job. Whether you are planning to take your vehicle to a professional service like Superior Exotics Color & Paint in Fort Lauderdale or considering a DIY approach, proper preparation is essential to ensure a smooth and durable finish. This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to prepare your car for painting, covering everything from cleaning to masking.
1. Gather Necessary Supplies
Before you begin the preparation process, gather the following supplies:
Cleaning Supplies: Car wash soap, microfiber cloths, a sponge, and a hose or pressure washer.
Tools for Sanding and Repair: Sandpaper (various grits), a sanding block, body filler, and a putty knife for any dents or scratches.
Masking Materials: Painter’s tape, masking paper or plastic sheeting, and newspaper to cover areas you don’t want to paint.
Protective Gear: Gloves, a mask, and safety goggles to protect yourself from dust and chemicals.
2. Wash Your Car Thoroughly
Cleaning your vehicle is the first step in preparing for a paint job. Here’s how to do it effectively:
Use Car Wash Soap: Avoid household cleaners, as they can strip wax and damage the finish. Use a dedicated car wash soap to clean the surface.
Remove Dirt and Grime: Pay special attention to areas where dirt and grime tend to accumulate, such as wheel wells, undercarriage, and between body panels.
Rinse and Dry: After washing, rinse the car thoroughly to remove all soap residue, then dry it completely with microfiber cloths to prevent water spots.
3. Inspect for Damage
After cleaning, inspect your vehicle for any damage that may need attention before Auto Painting Fort Lauderdale:
Check for Scratches and Dents: Look for imperfections on the surface of the car. Small scratches may need to be filled or sanded down, while larger dents might require body filler.
Repair Any Issues: Use body filler to smooth out any dents or imperfections. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying times.
4. Sand the Surface
Sanding is a critical step in preparing your car for paint. It helps to create a rough surface for the new paint to adhere to and removes any existing paint imperfections. Here’s how to sand effectively:
Choose the Right Grit: Use coarse sandpaper (around 80-120 grit) for rough surfaces and finer sandpaper (220 grit or higher) for smoothing.
Sand in Circular Motions: Work in small sections and sand in circular motions to avoid creating flat spots or uneven surfaces.
Smooth Transitions: If you’re only repainting specific areas, ensure that you feather the edges by gradually sanding the surrounding areas to blend with the original paint.
5. Clean the Surface Again
After sanding, it’s important to clean the surface again to remove any dust and debris created during the sanding process:
Use a Damp Cloth: Wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to pick up dust. Avoid using a dry cloth, as it can push dust into the air and back onto the surface.
Final Rinse: For a thorough cleaning, you can rinse the car with water again, ensuring it’s completely dry before proceeding.
6. Masking Off Areas
Masking is essential to protect areas of your vehicle that you do not want to be painted. Here’s how to effectively mask your car:
Use Painter’s Tape: Apply painter's tape around edges, trim, windows, and any other areas you want to protect. Make sure the tape adheres well to prevent paint bleed.
Cover Larger Areas: Use masking paper or plastic sheeting to cover larger sections, such as windows and tires. Secure the edges with tape to ensure they stay in place during painting.
Remove Accessories: If possible, remove any accessories such as mirrors, handles, and lights to make the painting process easier and ensure a cleaner finish.
7. Prepare the Environment
If you're doing a DIY paint job, setting up your environment properly is crucial for achieving the best results:
Choose the Right Location: Ideally, paint in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and dust. A garage or a covered outdoor space can be ideal.
Temperature Control: Make sure the temperature is within the recommended range for the paint you are using. Most auto paints adhere best at temperatures between 60°F and 90°F.
Minimize Dust: Ensure that the area is clean and free of dust. Close windows and doors to limit airflow and dust movement during the Auto Painting Fort Lauderdale process.
8. Final Check
Before starting the painting process, do a final inspection and check:
Verify Masking: Ensure that all areas not meant to be painted are properly masked off and secured.
Inspect Surface: Look for any missed spots or areas that may need additional sanding or repair.
Gather Painting Supplies: Ensure that all painting supplies, such as paint, spray gun, or brushes, are ready and accessible.
9. Conclusion
Preparing your car for auto painting in Fort Lauderdale is a vital step that can significantly enhance the quality of the paint job. By following these steps—gathering necessary supplies, thoroughly cleaning, inspecting for damage, sanding the surface, masking off areas, preparing the environment, and performing a final check—you can set the stage for a successful painting experience.

Extend Your Washing Machine's Life: Essential Maintenance Tips
A washing machine is an essential appliance in most households, making laundry day more manageable and saving you time. However, without proper care and maintenance, even the best washing machines can break down prematurely, leading to costly repairs or replacements. The good news is that with a few simple maintenance habits, you can extend the life of your washing machine and keep it running smoothly for years to come. Here’s how.
Washing Machine Service Centre in Coimbatore
1. Don’t Overload Your Machine
Overloading is a leading cause of washing machine breakdowns. When you pack your machine too full, it struggles to spin and clean your clothes properly. Overloading also puts extra strain on the motor, belts, and drum, which can lead to mechanical issues over time.
Tip:
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the machine’s capacity. It’s better to run two smaller loads than one overpacked load to keep your machine healthy and functioning optimally.
2. Use the Right Detergent and Measure Correctly
Using too much detergent or the wrong kind can cause soap buildup inside your washing machine. This buildup can lead to blockages, excess suds, and even damage to internal components. High-efficiency (HE) machines, in particular, require special HE detergent to function properly.
Tip:
Always use the recommended type of detergent for your machine. Measure out the correct amount based on your load size and water hardness to avoid soap residue buildup.
3. Clean the Washer Drum and Dispenser Regularly
Over time, residue from detergent, fabric softener, and dirt can build up in the drum and detergent dispenser, leading to foul odors and inefficient cleaning. Regular cleaning of these areas can prevent mold growth and keep your washing machine smelling fresh.
Tip:
Run a cleaning cycle once a month using a washing machine cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Additionally, wipe down the drum, rubber seal, and detergent dispenser after each use to remove moisture and debris.
Washing Machine Service in Coimbatore
4. Inspect and Clean the Filter
Many washing machines have a lint filter or drain pump filter designed to catch debris like lint, coins, and small items. If this filter becomes clogged, it can reduce the efficiency of your machine and even lead to drainage problems.
Tip:
Locate the filter according to your machine’s manual and clean it every few weeks. Removing lint and trapped items regularly will help your washing machine drain properly and prevent mechanical strain.
5. Avoid Using Too Much Water
Some people believe that adding extra water will help their clothes come out cleaner, but overusing water can actually lead to poor washing results and excessive wear on your washing machine. Modern machines are designed to use just the right amount of water for efficient cleaning.
Tip:
Stick to the machine’s automatic settings for water levels. If your washer allows you to manually adjust the water level, make sure it’s appropriate for the size of the load to avoid overuse and potential damage.
6. Check and Maintain Hoses
Your washing machine’s hoses are crucial for water supply and drainage, but they are also prone to wear and tear. Cracked, bulging, or loose hoses can lead to leaks, flooding, and water damage.
Tip:
Inspect your washing machine’s hoses every few months for signs of damage. Replace them if they show signs of wear. It’s recommended to change rubber hoses every 3-5 years and opt for stainless steel braided hoses, which are more durable.
Washing Machine Service Centre in Coimbatore
7. Level Your Washing Machine
An unbalanced washing machine can vibrate excessively, leading to loud noises and even damage to the internal components. An uneven machine can also cause your clothes to spin unevenly, making them come out wetter than they should be.
Tip:
Use a leveling tool to check if your washing machine is on a flat surface. Adjust the feet at the bottom of the machine to ensure it sits level. This will reduce vibrations and prolong the life of your machine.
8. Leave the Door Open After Use
After running a wash cycle, moisture and heat inside the drum can create the perfect environment for mold and mildew growth. This can lead to unpleasant smells and potential damage to your machine over time.
Tip:
Leave the door of your washing machine open for a few hours after each use. This allows air to circulate inside the drum, helping to prevent mold and mildew buildup.
9. Prevent Hard Water Buildup
If you live in an area with hard water, mineral deposits can accumulate inside your washing machine, leading to blockages and reduced efficiency. Over time, these deposits can damage key components, such as the heating element.
Tip:
Use a water softener or washing machine cleaner designed to break down mineral deposits. Cleaning your machine with vinegar or a descaling solution every few months can also help combat hard water buildup.
10. Schedule Regular Maintenance
Finally, scheduling regular maintenance checks with a professional can help catch potential problems before they become major issues. A technician can inspect the internal components, electrical connections, and water lines to ensure everything is working smoothly.
Washing Machine Service in Coimbatore
Tip:
Aim for a professional check-up at least once a year, especially if your machine is older or heavily used. Routine maintenance can prevent costly breakdowns and extend the life of your washing machine.
Conclusion
With a little attention and care, your washing machine can last for years without issues. Following these essential maintenance tips—such as avoiding overloads, using the right detergent, cleaning the machine regularly, and inspecting hoses—will help prevent common problems and extend your machine’s life. By incorporating these practices into your laundry routine, you can save money on repairs, avoid the hassle of breakdowns, and enjoy a smooth, stress-free laundry experience for years to come.
