A Dream About A Doll And A Dog

I am a doll, wandering empty dirt roads.  Long, long ago, I think I may have been a weapon.  Long enough ago that I can barely imagine, I might have been human.  Or at least something that looked the part.

Remembering is hard these days.

I am looking for my witch, that much I am certain of.  

There was a war, I think.  Or maybe some other disaster.  Something bad that had gone on for longer than anyone could remember and all believed would go on forever.

Until one day it didn’t.

Everything is broken and empty now, except for the bits of green that have started to grow.  None of the scattered and hungry people I’ve met on the roads have known what to do about it.  No one knows how to put things back together after so long breaking things apart.

My witch would know.

I was shattered, discarded, and bereft of self.  Useless and forgotten until my witch found what was left of me.  She made me new.  She made me durable enough that nothing could ever hurt me again.  She made me weak enough that I could never hurt anyone else again.  She made me whole.  She allowed me to just be without needing to be useful.

If she could put me back together, then surely she must be able to put everything else back together.

It took time for me to appreciate what she did to me.  Now that I am thinking about it again, those memories come back in flashes.  I would flail, and scratch, and bite, but my hands could not tear cloth and my teeth could not break skin.  Once I rent apart steel and ceramic and flesh and bone and circuitry and cables and graphene and glass and helmets and skulls and armor and weapons and ships and cannons and pipelines and spines and clouds and earth and cities and hearts and -

And now I stop and take deep breaths I don’t need until those memories I need even less fade again.

Maybe that’s what those people over there are doing as they harass the tall one in the red and black helmet shaped like a dog’s head.  Maybe they are just flailing about in misplaced aggression because they haven’t learned to do anything else yet.  I approach them.  I tell them I am looking for my witch.  I ask them if they’ve seen her.  All of them flee except for the tall one with a dog’s head who growls from beneath his unmoving metal features.

Why does that always happen when I ask?

The tall one with a dog’s head asks me to describe my witch.  I do so as much as my failing memory will allow.  The dog remembers her.  It was my witch who made this one in front of me now into her dog.  The dog had been searching for her for a long time as well, and while the dog was very good at tracking, the dog had eventually given up, believing her to be dead.  

Did we have a dog?  I must have forgotten about that.

I tell the dog that she is not dead.  She can’t be dead.  I am her doll and she is my witch.  I would know.  I would feel it.

Why aren’t we together anymore?  I don’t remember her leaving, only that one day she was gone, I wasn’t home anymore, and everything outside was different.

The dog says that we should travel together.  With the dog’s ability to track in conjunction my ability to feel my witch we might finally find her.  The hunt can begin again and when it finishes everything will be made right.

Why does the word "hunt" make me feel uneasy?

The dog has contacts that can supposedly help us get started.  I am led to a mostly-forgotten ruin of hangars and bunkers.  I don’t remember if I’ve been to this one before but I know that I have been to many just like it.  The last time I was in a place like it though, my witch lied to everyone there and said that I hadn’t.  I remember being grateful for that lie.  It made me less scared of going back.

My witch isn’t here to lie for me this time.

The dog takes me far below ground to untouched vaults.  In that dim place, gaunt mechanics scurry about, eyeing me with fear and hunger.  Favors are called in and the dog barks orders.  I am left standing alone in the middle of a wide open floor as crates are retrieved, dusted off, and opened.  I have never worn the armor whose pieces are being unpacked, but I’ve intimately known its like.  The sight of it thrills me.

I want to run away.

The dog tells me this is the best way to find my witch.

The last piece of armor is fastened into place.  Long-dormant systems activate and sync.  Long-drowned connections sputter to life and I remember how to fly, how to rend, and how to hunt.

Assuming I'm not totally down with the migraine tomorrow, guess what I am planning on heading to Lund to pick up tomorrow! Because the USB port on this phone from late 2020 has decided to start going fucky and giving me charging problems.

There's enough price difference that I decided to go for the Pixel 7 rather than 8. I knew electronics of all kinds tended to be more expensive here, but even the 7 is running higher now than it did in the US when it came out as their new flagship model back in 2022. 😬 There is luckily what is probably a former display device supposedly like new for the equivalent of $100+ less than usual available in a brick-and-mortar Elgiganten location in Lund. So yeah, I guess we're off to Lund in the Stealth Volvo tomorrow afternoon!

It is apparently pretty standard to buy your phones outright and go for a SIM-only plan here. Already got the working SIM, now just need another phone that will charge properly again. Was hoping to put off new phones until after the EU requirements including user-accessible/replaceable batteries had gone into full effect. But yeah, maybe not!

I'm not too happy with some of the directions Samsung has been running off in, or I would probably just go with one of the more recent Galaxies. So yeah, I decided to try a Pixel this time instead. It's also more readily rootable/flashable, which is part of the draw.

I am actually strongly considering trying GrapheneOS on this new phone and largely Degoogle it:

(He has apparently since had some problems with their lead developer, and stopped using it himself. But, not because it stopped being a good more secure and private offshoot of Android.)

Avoid a bunch of bloatware I don't want or need, too.

You can still run Google Play Services and Google Services Framework sandboxed, and I did double check that other folks have been able to run some important apps that I need to use (mainly BankID which is used for basically everything including logging in to medical services here, and various banking and official type crap). Yep, evidently so without any real problem. Shouldn't have trouble doing anything that I have been doing on the existing Android devices.

That will require stealing a computer from Mr. C, since my laptop is still out of commission. 🫤 But, that shouldn't be an issue.

It also shouldn't be a problem to flash stock Android right back on there, if the Graphene plan doesn't work out for whatever reason.

Not to reblog a reblog too much, but I thought I'd add one last thing:

For the truly patient amongst you, consider flashing a different ROM to your Android devices, especially Graphene OS. Graphene is designed in order to allow you to pen in your GSuite logins in such a way as to allow for basic functionality - it's sort of hard to use a fully de-Googled Android - while giving you complete control over who sees what.

Fully de-Googled Android ROMs do exist, but most are more conceptually free than observably free - the microG suite still features heavily, in most cases. In either case, you can get most of what you need off of homebrew APK portals.

I use stock Android on a Google Pixel 7 Pro, along with a throwaway Gmail address I only access once sandboxed on a PC - and I've never touched the Google Play Store. I should follow my own advice and flash Graphene eventually, seeing as I only switched to a 7 Pro because replacing my 4XL's battery wouldn't have been cost-effective, compared to purchasing a flagship. Canada's third-party maintenance sector was hit hard by inflation, so maintenance plus import fees for the needed parts would've cost me as much as a new phone.

Gear: A Dream About Trust And Fear

Even with the spotlight I lose track of her more than once, and I can only go so far before I have to stop. 

She swims back to me once she realizes I’m no longer keeping up and asks me what’s wrong. 

I tell her that I’m scared.  It’s so dark out here and I can’t see where I’m going like she can. 

She’s saddened by this but says she understands and we return to the shallows. 

What I said was true, but there’s more to it.  Although rationally I trust her and don’t believe she would ever harm me (at least not intentionally) I can’t get the image out of my head of her grabbing me by the wrist and dragging me under, and I hate myself for that. 

In the shallows we take the rest of the night easy, talking.  I promise to acquire some sort of equipment so that I can follow her properly in the future.  SCUBA gear perhaps, or even a potion that will allow me to breathe underwater for a few hours (although those are expensive enough that it’s not a sustainable option in the long term).  Either way I’ll need to get myself a waterproof watch so I can set an alarm to return to the surface with a safe amount of time to spare. 

Hear: A Dream About Digital Resurrection

Perhaps the most notable of my regulars are the half dozen or so men that almost always arrive in a group.  They are all parenting the same child - whom I never meet but hear much of - and all consider themselves to be the boy’s fathers.  With this era’s technology, that may well be the case genetically and not just socially.  There is never mention of a mother.  At any rate, it is clear that they are all devoted to one another and care deeply for their son.  Sometimes they all fuse into a multi-headed flying dragon.  Or they arrive in that form and split apart to place their orders.

Wear: A Dream About A Change In Plans

My body is taken apart and put back together with new limbs and interface ports for weapons and armor that I will only be allowed to wear when deployed.  My mind is retrofitted with proprietary software suites for targeting solutions, evasive maneuvers, tactical libraries, killing instincts, and a sense of naked vulnerability whenever I am not fully kitted out for destruction. Little in-between is allowed for the extremes of intoxicating raw power and pliant helplessness.

Asphaltenes, a byproduct of crude oil production, are a waste material with potential. Rice University scientists are determined to find it by converting the carbon-rich resource into useful graphene.

Muhammad Rahman, an assistant research professor of materials science and nanoengineering, is employing Rice's unique flash Joule heating process to convert asphaltenes instantly into turbostratic (loosely aligned) graphene and mix it into composites for thermal, anti-corrosion and 3D-printing applications.

The process makes good use of material otherwise burned for reuse as fuel or discarded into tailing ponds and landfills. Using at least some of the world's reserve of more than 1 trillion barrels of asphaltene as a feedstock for graphene would be good for the environment as well.

"Asphaltene is a big headache for the oil industry, and I think there will be a lot of interest in this," said Rahman, who characterized the process as both a scalable and sustainable way to reduce carbon emissions from burning asphaltene.

Rahman is a lead corresponding author of the paper in Science Advances co-led by Rice chemist James Tour, whose lab developed flash Joule heating, materials scientist Pulickel Ajayan and Md Golam Kibria, an assistant professor of chemical and petroleum engineering at the University of Calgary, Canada.
