Outside the California State Capitol last month, a fitness trainer turned school board president fired up the crowd at a parental rights rally, telling them they were all fighters in “a spiritual battle” for their kids and must answer the call from God.
Sonja Shaw, who was elected to the Chino Valley Unified School District board of education last November with an assist from a local megachurch and its Christian nationalist pastor, didn’t equivocate in naming the enemy: state Democratic officials who are challenging her right-leaning policies—and drafting laws that hinder book bans and protect teachers from harassment.
“Today we stand here and declare in his almighty name that it’s only a matter of time before we take your seats and we be a God-fearing example to the nation, how God is using California to lead the way,” Shaw crowed, adding, “We already know who has won this battle. You will be removed in Jesus’s name! You, Satan, are losing.”
Now Shaw is in the national spotlight in wake of her Chino school board passing codes that ban pride flags in classrooms and force educators to inform parents if their children identify as transgender—the first such policy to be passed in the state.
This summer, Shaw’s school board meetings, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, became chaotic spectacles, ones that attracted the Proud Boys and other right-wing extremists and pitted them against students and parents protesting what they’re calling anti-LGBTQ practices that endanger children. When California superintendent of schools Tony Thurmond appeared at the July meeting in opposition, Shaw unceremoniously silenced him.
Weeks after state Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a civil rights probe into Shaw’s “gender disclosure” policy, his office sued the school board. Bonta said the policy violates the California constitution and state law, and would cause LGBTQ+ students, “mental, emotional, psychological and potential physical harm,” according to a press release.
Other right-leaning school boards across the state have followed Chino Valley Unified’s lead. Shortly before filing suit against the Chino board, Bonta issued statements denouncing the Anderson Union High School District, Temecula Valley Unified and Murrieta Valley Unified school boards’ decisions to pursue “copycat” anti-trans policies.
“These students are currently under threat of being outed to their parents against their will, and many fear that the District’s policy will force them to make a choice: either ‘walk back’ their constitutionally and statutorily protected rights to gender identity and gender expression, or face the risk of emotional, physical, and psychological harm,” Bonta said.
To concerned observers in Chino, Shaw’s tack is not unlike what’s happening at school boards across the country, with brawls over curriculum, social emotional learning, and the banning of books that focus on race and LGBTQ issues. Extremist groups like Moms for Liberty have spawned a mainstream narrative that public schools are “indoctrinating” children with “woke” ideology and into believing they’re a different gender.
But in Chino Valley, the school board’s new direction appears to be spurred on by a man behind the curtain: Shaw’s megachurch pastor Jack Hibbs.
Indeed, three of the board’s five members belong to his church, Calvary Chapel Chino Hills.
At the Sacramento rally, Hibbs boasted of his congregation’s work in electing Shaw. Calling her a “true modern-day Deborah,” Hibbs said the soccer mom “heeded the call to run for the school board” and that “when churches get involved and get informed, people vote.”
God, Hibbs said, installed Shaw into her position.
“Get on your knees every night,” Shaw told the crowd. “All day I talk to him. People probably think I’m crazy, but I’m really just talking to God all day.” After reciting a Bible verse, she added, “I have looked demons straight in the eye and with God’s authority rebuked them back to hell where they belong.”
“You can do that too, trust me.”
Residents have long raised alarms about the school board’s religious bent. And Pastor Hibbs and members of his megachurch congregation appear to be more involved than ever in Chino’s public schools.
Last week, in an interview with right-wing provocateur Charlie Kirk, Hibbs said that he brought the policy language to the school board after Republican state Assemblyman Bill Essayli’s “parental notification” legislation died without a hearing.
“He came back thinking he was defeated,” Hibbs said. “What we did is that we read his bill and we took the verbiage from that bill and then introduced it to our unified school district school board and they voted and adopted the verbiage.”
“Guess what happened?” Hibbs continued. “We found out something, Charlie, that the most powerful politics is local…”
Hibbs then turned to Bonta’s lawsuit against the board, saying, “We’re going to take that on, we’re going to make sure that this goes to the U.S. Supreme Court.”
The pastor, who hasn’t returned messages left by The Daily Beast, wasn’t shy about his fight on the school board’s behalf.
Before he signed off, Hibbs told Kirk that children are “groomed” into trans ideology in the classroom and that schools want to “castrate your children” and “mutilate them.”
Ahead of the parental notification vote in July, Hibbs also urged people to flock to the fiery board meeting. “We’re asking people to show up by the thousands,” he said in a video announcement on the church’s Facebook page. “Please make it a priority.”
Meanwhile, Calvary Chapel has boasted on social media of collecting tens of thousands of ballots for state and local candidates endorsed by Hibbs. The church’s ballot collection, a practice it’s engaged in for years, is conducted with help from Hibbs’ political organization Real Impact.
A teacher in another district—who alleges she was fired for refusing to follow her school’s gender identity protocols—heeded Hibbs’ call. “I could no longer be both a Christian and a public school teacher,” she said at the board meeting. “Then I remembered what Pastor Jack Hibbs taught me, that the word of God says… that being a coward is a sin.”
Still, Shaw claims that neither she nor the school board follow Hibbs’ orders. “Absolutely not. No one has a direct line to Pastor Jack Hibbs. Pastor Jack has never said, ‘Hey, guys, I want you to bring this policy forward.’ Never ever did he do any of that,” she told The Daily Beast. She added, however, that she couldn’t speak on Hibbs’ involvement with the board of education prior to her election.
The mother of two daughters—a freshman and junior in high school—Shaw was a Bible study leader at another church before joining Hibbs’ Calvary Chapel Chino Hills about two years ago.
Last September, Shaw told the San Bernardino Sun that she wasn’t running for election on the behalf of the 10,000-member Calvary Chapel. “They keep calling me ‘the church’s choice.’ I’ve never met Pastor Jack (Hibbs). I’ve never been brought up on stage,” she said.
One month later, however, Hibbs introduced her at the pulpit, telling his Sunday service that “she’s truly going up against the machine” before leading a prayer for her victory. Shaw bowed her head as Hibbs lifted a hand in the air and declared, “She has decided, Lord, to take on the woke-ism that is attacking our children.”
Hibbs has emboldened supporters to fight progressive education bills and prop up Christian candidates. In his sermons, he has tearfully prayed on stage for Donald Trump to win the 2020 election, said COVID-19 vaccines would lead people into accepting “the mark of the beast,” and called “transgenderism” a “sexually perverted cult” and “an anti-God, anti-Christ plan of none other than Satan himself.”
On education, he’s claimed that he and his acolytes are “trying to rescue kids from a system that is sexualizing them,” that kids “come out of school questioning their gender but they don’t even know how to do simple math” and “are being raped by the public school system.”
Hibbs has also taken aim at California’s abortion protections, describing them as “Infanticidal Death Policies,” in a document circulated to his congregation in October 2022, just before Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s re-election.
“If God does not intervene in this upcoming election through His people, which has always been his MO, and, if Newsom has his way, then this will certainly be proof that judgment has begun in California if not the United States,” the document reads. It ends by encouraging followers to return their ballots to the church.
“We should be able to stand against the school board,” Hibbs said in May. “We should be able to stand against some teacher that is molesting your child—if not physically, in their minds.”
In July, Hibbs delivered a skewed history lesson claiming that some founding fathers “inherited” slaves but actually cared for them. “Before you call them rich white guys who were slave owners,” Hibbs preached, “you need to finish the sentence: They were rich white guys who were slave owners who clothed, fed, and in many cases took very good care of their slaves while at the same time juggling two worlds…”
The megachurch has also tried to meddle in Chino Valley public school classes and teachings. Calvary Chapel members once funded textbooks for an elective course in two public high schools on the Bible as history and literature and tried to alter rules for sex education curriculum.
The church also runs a Christian “Released Time” program, where public school students can duck out of class for weekly one-hour Bible lessons held in buses outfitted with tables and chairs. This program had a table at the district’s back-to-school night, and a volunteer in a Calvary Chapel Chino Hills T-shirt handed out candy and Bible coloring books.
“This is a national movement and it’s intentional,” former school board president Christina Gagnier told The Daily Beast. “I think Chino Valley is a cautionary tale.”
District parent Glory Ciccarelli condemned Hibbs’ words on slavery at the August board meeting, urging Black parents to leave his church and “wake up and realize that what our ancestors went through is slowly getting phased out of the curriculum to the point where our kids will eventually be taught that literal slaveholders were nice guys…”
Ciccarelli told The Daily Beast that her biggest issue with Chino Valley leadership is “the apathy they have for the Black kids in the district,” and that the board needs professional development training relating to race and culture and diversity in hiring.
But she believes that Hibbs’ influence over certain board members could derail any progress in the district. In addition to Shaw, two other school board members—James Na and Andrew Cruz—are also members of Calvary Chapel.
“Cruz and Na are quite literally acolytes of Jack Hibbs at this point,” Ciccarelli said. “In my opinion, everything they say and believe as it relates to the school board is basically something they have heard from him.”
Hibbs, she added, “reminds me of Jim Jones with the way he is so easily able to control so many people at the same time.”
At the July board meeting that attracted far-right extremists like the Proud Boys, some local parents pushed back against the church’s connections to the school board.
“Madam President, board, cabinet, and staff,” quipped one father of a queer child, “I didn’t know I came to church tonight. I thought it was a board meeting.”
So many citizens had signed up to speak, waiting in a line outside in 100-degree weather, that the board cut the public comment period from three minutes to one minute per person.
Lisa Greathouse, a local mom and former school board candidate, defended teachers against claims they were “indoctrinating” and “grooming” kids. “Make no mistake,” Greathouse told the auditorium, “what this board is pushing through now is just the tip of the iceberg. They are taking their cue from their megachurch…”
Outbursts from hecklers interrupted the proceeding, which had a heavy police and security presence. Speakers from out of town and from Calvary Chapel preached about God and the Devil, facing off with parents and students who warned Shaw and her board they would have blood on their hands should the “outing” policy pass.
One moment in particular was so explosive it made headlines: Shaw excoriated Tony Thurmond, California’s state superintendent of schools, who’d asked her to reconsider the policy about notifying parents if their children identified as trans. He said it might run afoul of student privacy laws and jeopardize kids who “may not be in homes where they can be safe.”
Thurmond wasn’t finished with his remarks, but Shaw cut him off for time like she did anyone else. “Tony Thurmond,” she seethed, “I appreciate you being here, tremendously. But here’s the problem: We’re here because of people like you. You’re in Sacramento proposing things that pervert children!”
After Thurmond tried to continue, Shaw yelled into her mic that she wouldn’t let him “blackmail” or “bully” her district. Video of the scene showed Thurmond exchanging words with a group of cops before walking away.
In a statement, Thurmond told The Daily Beast that a group of concerned students contacted him about Shaw’s proposal, and he rearranged his schedule to be there. “Let’s be clear about these policies—a small group of anti-LGBTQ+ politicians like Ms. Shaw believe they have the right to dictate when and how students and their families talk about their sexual orientation or gender identity,” Thurmond said. “They are trying to turn our public school educators—who are already overworked and underpaid—into the gender police.”
“Choosing when to come out and to whom is a deeply personal decision that LGBTQ+ young people have the right to make for themselves.”
youtube
Ashlee Peters, the parent of a child in the district, watched the scene unfold. “As an educator and as a mom, you just sit there and go, ‘I can’t believe this is happening in my community,’” said Peters, who has been a public school teacher for 22 years.
Peters was also in line when far-right activist Bryce Henson, who also goes by Ben Richards, walked around trying to bait people into reacting on camera. “He would come up to you and be like, ‘I just want to talk to you, why can’t we just have a conversation about this?’” It was a sneak preview of the testimony to come.
Inside, people proselytized and spewed hatred, calling LGBTQ people “terrorists” and warning “demons are after our children.” Richards called transgender, Black Lives Matter and Juneteenth flags flying outside his San Diego school district a symbol of “systemic radical leftist indoctrination." One mother ended her speech with, “As Jason Aldean would say, ‘Well, try that in a small town.’”
When it was her turn, Peters warned that the “outing” policy would “create a hostile environment” for LGBTQIA+ students and that the board’s “reckless pursuit of personal agendas” could bring about “expensive lawsuits.”
The atmosphere was so tense that security escorted a person out who put hands on someone else, Peters said. “It seriously feels like I’m in some sort of weird dystopia,” Peters told The Daily Beast. “I don’t know how this happened because it does not feel real.”
Peters believes that what’s unfolding in Chino Valley Unified is a wake-up call to monitor school board elections. “I just didn’t think it was going to happen in my community because I live in California,” she said. “I feel relatively safe living in a blue state—that religion wasn’t going to suddenly take over my public school system, and it has.”
Even though the involvement of Hibbs and his megachuch in local public schools has been center stage in Chino Valley this year, it’s a battle that’s been brewing for at least a decade. Back in 2014, the Freedom from Religion Foundation filed a lawsuit on behalf of parents in Chino Valley over prayers and Bible readings at school board meetings, arguing these practices “constituted an establishment of religion in violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments.”
The prayers and Bible verses were being led by Calvary Chapel members James Na and Andrew Cruz, who were elected to the school board in 2008 and 2012 respectively.
According to the prayer lawsuit, Na once told spectators of a school board meeting that their “lives begin in the hospital and end in the church, and urged everyone who does not know Jesus Christ to go and find Him.” In 2013, Na sent out a letter to school district “family member[s]” that referred to Hibbs with an excerpt from “Pastor Jack’s Christmas story.”
“The community is going to rise and create a war chest to help you,” Hibbs told the board in 2016 in the midst of the legal battle, though a crowdfunding drive affiliated with the church apparently never delivered. A school board spokesperson previously said that funding was intended to bring the case to the Supreme Court.
A federal judge ultimately ruled in the parents’ favor, and the board lost its Ninth Circuit appeal, leaving the district with $282,000 in legal bills.
This apparently hasn’t stopped Cruz’s Christian commentary. In April, he went on a rant wherein he said that if he were governor, he’d mandate citizens be trained in firearms and that, “I do love one man, I really love this man, and that is Jesus Christ. It’s in my head.”
Since his election, Cruz has especially ignited parents’ ire and weathered calls to resign as a result of his offensive remarks and chemtrail conspiracy theories. In 2015, Cruz said mothers who don’t vaccinate their kids are wrongfully vilified while “illegal aliens” bring infectious disease to America. In 2018, Cruz infamously said that “it wasn’t Hitler that was bad, it was the people that follow the laws and the agenda” while discussing “parents rights.”
That year, Na and Cruz (and Hibbs) proposed that parents have the ability to opt kids out of sex-ed discussions on gender identity, sexual orientation, and discrimination—and for schools to notify parents when a transgender student uses a locker room or shower. Those measures failed.
Na is also not without controversy. Aside from his religious musings at the board, he’s also been accused of trying to recruit at least one student to Calvary Chapel.
At a June board meeting, a statement was read on behalf of Esther Kim, who was the panel’s student representative in the 2021-2022 school year. “In sophomore year, I met Mr. Na through a personal phone call where his school board role and my school were acknowledged,” Kim said. “During an unrelated conversation, he attempted to persuade me to go to his church.”

Federal law explicitly prohibits churches from engaging in political campaign activity.

San Francisco is usually beautiful in late Spring. The air wasn’t sweltering yet, the flowers were in bloom.
And the rivalry with Los Angeles was in full swing.
Frank gritted his teeth at the thought of having to see Bobby Fuller again.  That asshole had been traded two years after the Vegas incident and he and Frank had been at each others throats during that time. So seeing him with the Giants was hard.  The Dodgers would be playing the Giants more often than he did with the Red Sox.
During the first inning, there was almost a full out brawl when the pitcher almost hit Frank in the head with an errant pitch. Frank got into his face but never made a violent move.  The benches were  given a warning and play continued.
Abby sat in the dugout as the trainer on the field, a responsibility that she enjoyed because not only was she involved with the team, but she was also close to Frank.  They didn’t interact much, knowing the TV cameras were everywhere, but Frank gave her a side smirk every once in a while, allowing the butterflies to gather in her stomach. When he could, he gave her a gentle touch, so she knew he was there.
It seemed the game calmed down for a few innings until the top of the sixth.  Frank was back at bat and observed a pitching changeup.  The new pitcher, Smith, stopped to hear something from Fuller and then warmed up. Frank was curious but he let it go, concentrating on the pitch. The first one was low and inside, the second was away.  Frank smirked. He knew he just needed to be patient.
Except when the fastball went wide of the box. And bounced off of Frank’s hand and into his face.
He dropped to the ground, not moving. Abby grabbed her bag and followed another trainer out to the field. “Adler? Frank? Can you hear me?” Abby looked at Dave, the other trainer. “We need to move him. Get the brace.”  After fitting Frank with the neck brace, Dave and Abby carefully turned him over. “Oh Frankie,” she whispered.
Frank had blood coming from the side of his face. “Fuck,” he moaned.  He blinked. “Cricket?”
“Oh thank God. Let’s get the backboard,” she ordered Dave. As the EMTs came in, she smiled down at Frank. “If you wanted my attention, there are other ways Franklin.”
“Full name treatment. I’m an injured man Cricket.” He smiled but immediately grimaced. Johnny came over to check on him.  “Hey man.”
“Adler, jesus, are you ok?”
“Maybe I should have ducked?”
Abby smacks his shoulder. “We’re gonna get him checked out Storm.”  They loaded him to a cart as the crowd in San Francisco clapped and Frank gave a wave.
The ride to the hospital was quick and Abby spoke with the attending physician to advise what happened.  She stood back in the examination room as the doctors on call checked him over.  The lead doctor came to speak to Abby. “Dr. Hernandez, it looks like Mr. Adler has a very minor concussion, a contusion on his face that will require a couple of stitches and a broken pinkie finger.  My recommendation is three weeks of healing.”
Abby let out a sigh of relief. “That's better news than I had hoped for.  I agree with your assessment.  I will let the team know. Thank you so much.”
“We can release him in your care today but no flying for 48 hours. Let me know if you need anything else?”
“Just copies of his records for the team.” They shook hands and Abby went to Frank. “How do you feel about a small vacation?”
“That bad?”
“Broken pinkie, a small cut that needs stitches, and a small concussion. The League is putting you into concussion protocol, which is two weeks and the pinkie will need an extra week.  I’m sorry love, but three weeks on the injury reserved.”
“That’s all of June,” Frank whines as he leans his head back.  Abby runs her nails through his scalp gently and he lets out a hum of contentment. “Will you stay with me Cricket?” He looked at her with puppy eyes.
“I will have to work a little but yes, I can stay with you.”
“What about...”
“He’s back east with the firm. He took a case over there that will last about a month.” She bit her lip. “We’ll be fine.”
Frank kissed the inside of her wrist. “I love you.”
“I love you.  Now, let’s get you discharged and to the hotel. I need to let Todd know your status and have another trainer join the team for the rest of the trip.”
Tumblr media
When Frank and Abby arrived back at LAX, a teary Mary and Scott were waiting for them.  Mary ran up to Frank and he scooped her up with his good hand.  She cried into his neck, and he tried to sooth her. “Hey Nugget, its ok, I’m ok.”
Mary pulled back and squished his face between her small hands.  She pushes his head around, inspecting the cut and his eyes. “Frank, you scared me.” She pushes his lips to make him smile. “You’re smiling.”

“Yeah, I scared me too.  But Abby took good care of me.”  He flashed a soft smile to Abby before Mary launched herself into Abby.
“Thank you, Abby, for taking care of Frank.”
“Always Nugget. I’ll always take care of my family.”  She put Mary down so Frank could take her hand and she turned to Scott.  “How bad?”
“She cried until you guys called. It was pretty scary.” Scott huffs.  “If he wanted your attention...”
“I did not do it to get her attention,” Frank growled.  “If I wanted to get her attention, I would just need to show her my...”
“Franklin!”
Scott snickered as Frank groaned.  “Franklin, that’s so lame,” Mary says.
Frank looks at Abby, who blows him a kiss. He shakes his head but returns the gesture as they make it out to the car.  Getting home, Frank gets to the couch and leans his head back. “Are you in pain Frankie?”
“A little, Cricket.” He grimaces. “Just feel pressure behind my eyes.”
“Yep, that’s the concussion.” Abby reaches for her bag and takes out a couple of tablets. “Here, let me get you some water.” Scott comes around with a bottle of water and Frank looks at him gratefully. He swallows the medicine and tries to close his eyes. “Baby, if you want to sleep, you should be in your room with the curtains closed. You’ll feel better, promise.”
“Will you lay with me?” he asked pathetically.
“Sure love.”  She helps Frank up and into his room. She gets him down and curled up against him. “Better?” He nodded and closed his eyes. “Rest, my love.  I’ll be right here.”
The next ten days were calm with Frank still recovering from his concussion. On day 12, he became restless. He woke up with his Cricket in his arms, her butt right up against his pelvis. Christ, her ass is perfect, he thinks. He lets his hand wander down, dipping below her panties. She sighs in her sleep, but Frank wants to wake her up. He pulls her leg over his hip to open her up and lets his fingertips dip into her folds. Fucking wet and warm for him, like always. He slowly sinks a finger in.
“Frankie,” she moans softly. “Baby, your head.”
“It is clear as ever Cricket. Can I have you?” She nods and Frank smiles. He adds a finger and pumps at a steady rhythm. She cries out quietly and he palms her clit.  He brings her to the brink and watches as she shatters in his arms.
“Need. More,” she pants.
“Whatever you need Cricket.”  Frank pushes her panties down her legs and then pushes his own boxers down, grasping her knee and pulling it back over his hip.  He let his tip dance around the remnants of her release before slowly pushing in. She purrs at the stretch, and he gives a low chuckle.  “Can you be quiet for me Cricket? Can you be a good girl and be quiet?” He feels her nod against his ear. He pulls back and rocks back into her and he can feel her hum at the sensation.  “Good girl. Such a good fucking girl.”
Abby is lost in the sensation of Frank taking her apart slowly. He isn’t rough or fast, just taking his time, making her feel everything. She whimpers at a particularly deep thrust into her womb but she doesn’t cry out. “That's my good Cricket,” he whispers, making her clench around him. “Didn’t realize you have a thing for praise, my love.”
“Frankie,” she whispered. “Don’t be cruel.”
“Never, my love.” He ran a finger down her skin until he met her clit.  He rubbed slowly, feeling her build around his cock. “Are you almost there? I know you are, can feel it.”
“Yes,” she gasped. He didn’t stop until she shattered, seeing stars as he pumped in one, two, three and released inside of her with a low groan.
“I love you.”
“I love you more.”
“Not possible.”
Tumblr media
“Let’s take a trip.”
Abby looks from her coffee. “What?”
“Let’s go on a trip.  Nug has her trip to DC this week, Scott’s heading back to Boston while she’s gone. I can’t stare at these walls anymore Cricket.”
“You’re on injured reserve Frankie, you can’t just take a trip.”
Frank pouts and gives her puppy eyes.  “Please?”
“Oh so you think that just giving me eyes and a sweet little please is going to change my mind.”  Abby turns back to her computer with a scoff.  She misses Frank coming from behind her and sweeping her curls off of her shoulder.  He presses sweet kisses to her neck and shoulders, watching her lose her head and tilt back, exposing more of her.
“I can stop, my love, and just go back to the couch.”
“N-no.” She closes her eyes as her hand cups the back of his neck.  She can feel his smile against her skin.
“Just a few nights. Please.”
Abby starts to lose control of her gasps. She knows she needs to be quiet but the sensation of his lips on the column of her throat is one of the best she’s ever felt. “Ok,” she whispers as he nips her gently. “Fine, where do you want to go?”
After Mary is dropped off with the school for her trip, Frank heads to the airport to drop Scott off for his flight to Boston.  “Have fun Frank,” he said with a wink.
“You too Scott.” He gave him a hug and walked back to his car.  As he drove away from LAX, a sign blinked at him and an idea hit him. It was time, he thought to himself. He messaged Abby.
Frank: pack for the heat  Abby: Why?  Frank: I want to take you somewhere and it will be hot.   Abby: I hate being hot.   Frank: Humor me  Abby: 😑 Fine.   Frank: Love you. 😘
Abby packed her suitcase, smiling at the message Frank sent when another popped up
Mike: How’s the road trip?  Abby: Fine.  Mike: I miss you  Abby: You too  Mike: I’ll be home in a week.   Abby: Ok, I’ll be home
“Fuck,” she muttered.  She hated that she hadn’t had the nerve to just break it off yet. She was just scared of Mike’s reaction. Abby wasn’t normally a confrontational person.  The last time she was hostile, well, she lost Frank. The memory made her sad. When she heard the door open, she shook it off and closed her case.
“Hey Cricket. All set?” Frank’s excitement was in the air.
“Yeah baby, I’m all set.” Abby smiled as she wrapped her arms around his neck.  “Gonna tell me where we are going?”
He kissed her nose. “Nope. Let’s go.” He grabbed her bag and his and headed to his Camero.
“I can’t believe you still have this car.”
“I can’t believe you would think that I got rid of it.” Frank started the car and headed out. “This is my prize for getting drafted.”
“And here I thought that was me,” she replied without a thought. Frank smile dropped a little. He swallowed, wondering if this road trip idea was smart. He stayed silent, thinking about all the details and hoped that she would listen.
A few hours later, Abby’s face was in disbelief.  Frank had taken them to Las Vegas.  She didn’t know what to say. Why would he bring them to the very place that had broken them?  Having never been to the city herself, she was awestruck at the lights and sounds.  Frank pulled into a fancy one, the Bellagio and had the valet take their car and bags.  He held her hand as they walked into the lobby.  Abby gasped as she took in the glass flower ceiling. “Wow.”
“It is beautiful,” Frank commented. “When the team had come out here and we were walking around, I remember thinking that you would have loved this.”
“Is this... is there where...”
“No Cricket. I will never go back to that particular hotel ever again.” Frank checked them in and a hotel concierge walked them to their room.  “This is one of our high roller suites, sir.  If you need anything just call the desk and someone will be right up.”
“Thank you.” Frank tipped the man as Abby took in the room.  It faced out to the strip and she could see the other hotels. Suddenly, what sounded like a cannon blasted water up in the air and the fountain began to dance.
“The fountain,” she squealed as Frank chuckled. She could faintly hear the remnants of a Frank Sinatra in the air as the towers of water began to dance.  When it ended, Abby clapped. “That was amazing.”
“It says here that it happens every half hour to a new song until midnight so we can watch it again if you like Cricket.”  Frank loved watching her as she enjoyed the show.  It was something he remembered from that awful October, wishing he could have shared it with her then. “C’mon baby, let me feed you and we can take a walk.”
After a delicious meal, Frank and Abby walked hand in hand on the crowded streets. They pointed at the different signs, different characters that were walking the strip, laughing, and enjoying being just Frank and Abby.  As they approached one hotel, Frank’s palms began to sweat. “Frankie?”
“Can I tell you a story? It doesn’t have a happy ending but maybe we can rewrite it.” Frank looked to his feet.
“You can talk to me about anything, love.” Abby cupped his cheek. “Take your time.”
Frank swallowed.  “About five years ago, I won the big game for my team, and we came here to celebrate. I really didn’t want to because I had my amazing girlfriend and my darling little niece at home, but I didn’t want to come off as a bad team player.  My best friend came with me, and we lived it up.  Our captain had gotten us a couple of tables at a club, and we had fun.” Frank sighed and pointed to the club in front of the MGM. “See that sign? Its for the club we went to.  This is the hotel we were staying at.  Anyways, we partied and went back to the suite where some of us had been staying at.”
“Alone?” She asked, quietly.
“Me, yes.  Some women approached me that night, but I refused.  I wasn’t drinking as much as the rest of the guys from what I can remember. Anyways, some of the guys had brought girls back with us and the hotel had set up a bar for us to drink from.  There was a pool off the balcony of the room and the girls were getting in with just their underwear.  I was uncomfortable.  I said that to Mike. The last thing I remember clearly was him handing me a glass of scotch.  He said, ‘Adler, you earned this.’ You’re a good man to Abby and a wonderful father to Mary.  Just relax and enjoy.’”
“Mike handed you that drink?”
“That’s the last one I remember.  When I woke up, I was in a room, not mine. My head was splitting, and I was dehydrated.  I made it to the bathroom and when I looked back, I saw the blonde. I yelled at her, asking her what the fuck she was doing in my room. She panicked and said she didn’t remember coming in there with me.  Mike rushed in and told her to get out while checking over with me.  I asked him what I had done, and he said, I swear, he said that I got drunk, and I couldn’t make it to my room so he put me in his.”
Abby closed her eyes. “Why would Mike lie?  He had no reason to.”
“Abby, I love how you are so trusting but Mike has had it bad for you since high school. But he knew I liked you and was working up the nerve to tell you for years. But back to the story. I called Steve and asked what I should do.  He was here as well with another client.  He asked me to stop the girl and ask her for the truth.  I did manage to stop her, ask her and promise not to go to the press.  I would pay anything for it not to go to press.  I needed to tell you first.  Steve showed up and got an NDA in place. He talked to her and she confirmed, nothing happened.”
“But then the pictures came out.”
“Then the pictures came out.  I was so angry that someone, who knows who, they violated my privacy, my trust.  I was desperately trying to get to you first but by the time I landed, it was too late. You didn’t let me explain and I lost you.”
“Oh Frankie,” she cried as she pressed herself into his chest.
“I’m so sorry Cricket. I should have called, I should have done something else to stop this from happening. I lost five years with you when a simple phone call would have solved everything.  I am so sorry.”
“I’m sorry too Frankie, I should have just taken a moment to listen to you. When I got those texts of those photos...”
Frank pulled back. “What texts?”
“I got an anonymous text with the photos and an audio of you just says, “I can’t tell Abby,” I thought, well I thought it was more common.”
“You don’t know who sent it.” She shook her head. “Fuck, I don’t, I don’t even know what to say.  I was always going to tell you but I didn’t want to do it by phone.” He pulled her back into his arms and held her tight. “I love you Cricket.  I never stopped.” He kissed the top of her head as they held each other.
Abby sighed after a while.  “Take me to bed?”
Frank didn’t answer, just turned away from the hotel that ruined his life and started back to the fountain.  As they walked, Abby spotted something and stopped.  “Cricket?”
She pointed at the building. “We could make better memories.”
Frank stared at the building and back at his girl.

'I'm a gay half-Jew, half-Arab fitness guru with a with a black daughter and 'half-Latin' son - and even I got out of California because it's too woke'
Celebrity fitness trainer Jillian Michaels says she moved away from California because its move to the left got 'too crazy' for her.
Michaels moved with her wife DeShanna Marie Minuto and adopted kids Lukensia, 14, and Phoenix, 12, from Los Angeles, where she grew up, to Miami in June 2021.
She previously said the last straw was when her home was broken into by an intruder with 'duct tape and a video camera' who was let out of jail due to Covid.
Michaels frequently blames Governor Gavin Newsom for what she doesn't like about California, and expanded on that theme on Sage Steele's podcast.
The former reality TV star is the latest in a line of celebrities including Elon Musk and Sean Hannity to move from liberal-leaning states like New York and California to Republican-run ones like Florida and Texas that have no state income tax.

SARAH FABRAY
☆ FULL NAME: Sarah Elizabeth Fabray ☆ GENDER: Ciswoman ☆ PRONOUNS: She/Her ☆ AGE: 34 (April 10th, 1990) ☆ BIRTH ORDER: First ☆ TYPE: Full sibling; solo ☆ HOMETOWN: Los Angeles, California ☆ JOB: Owner of and Guru at Peaceful Harmony ☆ SCHOOL: PSU Alumni ☆ SEXUALITY: Fluid ☆ FACECLAIM: Anna Camp
ABOUT SARAH
homophobia tw, religion cw
When Russel and Judy Fabray had their first child they placed all of their expectations for their future on them. They were told that they would be having a boy and that’s what Russel always wanted. A strong Christian first born son to pass all his knowledge to and raise as the strong family patriarch he should be. You can imagine his disappointment when the baby turned out to be a girl. Sarah Elizabeth Fabray was born without her father’s approval so she then grew up seeking it.
While she was the loved by her mother and raised to be the good Christian girl she should become. Sarah pushed hard to gain her father’s admiration. She learnt the Bible and memorised key passages. She would be the first to volunteer at church and get involved. Outside of church her father channeled some of his desire for a son onto her. She learnt to be strong and to walk over people before they could walk over you. To be a titan of business who could provide for the family.
Sarah grew to be the perfect example to her siblings and a strong confident Christian woman. Yet no man was ever good enough to fit with Sarah’s and her parents expectations of the perfect Christian husband. As she grew Russel and Judy would match her with boys from other well respected families but it never felt right. There was never any spark or as Sarah would put it they were just wet flannels with no backbone. So while she waited for Mr Right, Sarah channeled her energy into her work. If she wasn’t going to have success in the love department and start her dream family she would have all the success in every other aspect of her life. She went to PSU studied hard and was top of her class to became a corporate lawyer in New York.
Sarah flew through the ranks at the firm with her tact skill and no nonsense approach. She had a very strict schedule that kept everything perfect and moving nicely. She had a personal trainer and kept strong kickboxing. She met a lovely man and was engaged to be married and she was on course to become partner in the firm. But when her father’s scandal came out it was devastating. The man she thought was the perfect Christian man. Who showed her faith and taught her all the qualities and things she should want in her life was a liar!
While Sarah tried to hold it all together the scandal cracked her foundation in such a significant way what everything began to fall apart. Sarah didn’t look at her faith in the same way again. It didn’t have all the answers and how could her father teach and pretend to be the Christian man he was and lie. The further Sarah looked into herself for answers the more unresolved trauma she unearthed. The main one being that she definitely wasn’t straight. But women marry men and create families as god intended. Suddenly Sarah didn’t fit what she always believed was the narrative for everyone. This paradine shift meant she became an outsider in her mind. How could God leave her high and dry like this with no answers. She couldn’t talk to anyone of the faith for fear of prosecution. This internal struggle resulted in the breakdown of her engagement. Her fiancée calling her a Jezebel and harlot for wanting women. That the devil had gotten to her. But he haven’t. She had just discovered this side of herself that she had pushed away.
Then she lost out on the role of partner at the firm. Turns out when your father who is well known in the business world has a huge nationwide scandal they don’t want your name attached to theirs. In fact they fired her and kept her away from the high paying important clients. It was a true kick in the teeth. Sarah had given everything to that firm. She worked constantly. Never taking time off, always on call and getting the best for her clients. She spent time money and all her energy to get to the top and all they did was take her success for their own and push her aside.
Then the final straw was when she lost her parents approval. Sarahs head was scrambled. Her father was an adulterous, she was queer, her engagement was over, she was still queer, and now she had lost her job. So she headed home. To whatever sanctuary she had left in her mother. But as she laid on her mother’s bed crying about her losses and seeking comfort she came out and her conservative mother after losing her husband couldn’t have a queer daughter with no prospects. She threw Sarah out.
There she was distraught wandering the streets of LA in the middle of the night. Her perfect hair matted, her perfect makeup smudged with mascara running down her face. One of her jimmy choo heals snapped. No where to go, nothing to do, no one to love.
Sarah took to a bar to drown her sorrows. She had reached such a dark place that she thought why not end it all. She was a disgrace to her family and to God. It was as she was drinkunly wandering to find the nearest bridge that this person stopped her and spoke with her. The first person with no judgement. That is how she met Guru Daksha Kumari. Daksha took Sarah in that night. Gave her a safe place to crash and the next morning Sarah awoke to Daksha doing yoga stretches and chanting mantras while this enchanting smell of incense filled the air. Sarah although a novice joined Daksha that day and a whole new world was opened up to her.
Chakras, energy, healing, vibrations, crystals, meditation, Sarah found a whole new world in holistic medicine. She went on a journey of heating around the world and learnt from shamans and healers. She healed herself and gained a whole new outlook on life. Accepting God in a different way and embracing a many faceted spirituality. She discovered spiritual gifts and could see people’s auras.
Sarah left the corporate world. She left New York. She left her material things and she left the religion she knew and found a new life. Now she lives by energy and auras. She works with a higher power and all this discovery allowed her to accept her queer self and the love she can give to anyone. Upon returning to LA Sarah started Peaceful Harmony retreat and specialises in chakra healing, meditation, and yoga. Helping people unlock their true spiritual potential.
FAMILY BACKGROUND
The Fabray family wasn’t just famous, they were the faces of the so-called perfect Christian family. Their church United Salvation wasn’t against involving itself in politics and because of it was often in the limelight as much as it’s famous members. Of course, the higher the horse that people sit on, the harder the fall which was exactly what the Fabrays discovered when Russell’s infidelity was brought forward. The manager of actress Judith Fabray was sleeping with his younger clients. After all, Hollywood loved putting an expiration date on women, and apparently marriages being included was in the fine print. After an ugly divorce, Russell was firmly kicked out much to the relief of his children.

The Gym Beginner's Tip No One Will Tell You About
I’ll tell you all something that no other personal trainer in the fitness industry will tell you. It’s nothing new, and all trainers and instructors know this very well. The only reason you’ll never hear a trainer mention this publicly is because they will miss out on potential money by sharing this information with you. Before I share this information, I’ll give you my own credentials so you know I’m not just pulling your leg (although I’m certain most of you will already know this information intuitively).
If you’re new here, hello! My name is Aleena! I’m a NASM Certified personal trainer, and I’ve been working in the fitness industry for nearly three years now. That’s not a terribly long time, however I’ve experienced massive growth and success in my career since I’ve began as a personal trainer. First a trainer then a class instructor and eight months later I was gifted with the opportunity to become a fitness manager. I work for a boutique gym located in Downtown Los Angeles and the entire premise of my job is help the other trainers in my facility grow in their own training abilities. Beyond my career, I’ve been active my whole life. I ran track in elementary school, played basketball throughout middle school and high school, and was an active gym rat in college continuing on. When COVID struck and we all went into quarantine, I became a yoga nut and runner, and you can most certainly bet as soon as gyms opened up I found myself right back in there. Post-COVID I got my first ever personal trainer and quickly realized how easily I could translate the information I had learned throughout my life to help others in their own health and fitness journeys. A few months later I was certified and ready to start building in my profession. The growth has been unreal, but I feel it’s a deep indication of how I have found the path that is right for me.
So what is it that other personal trainers won’t tell you?
You don’t NEED a personal trainer. Sure, that sounds normal and understandable, so let me clarify with more information.
You don’t need a personal trainer for the FIRST THREE MONTHS of your fitness journey.
It’s a fairly intuitive understanding, but most of us will get scared to do something new on our own. The reason I say the first three months is because, if you’ve never done anything fitness related or it’s simply been a long time since you’ve been active, the first three months should be dedicated to getting into the habit of becoming active. If we’ve been sedentary for a long time, quite literally any consistent movement will yield results.
I like to explain it like this - if you pick up a weight and you move the weight in some way and you do this everyday for 90 days, you will see a change. It doesn’t matter what you do with this weight. You can pull it, press it, raise it, walk with it. Just do it every single day for 90 days and watch how something will change. Now… it may not be the change you want to see, but there will be change. This is something we all know, and yet no trainer is going to tell you this. Instead (as an unfortunate result of the capitalistic nature of our society) they’ll try to sell you on the idea that you have absolutely no clue what you’re doing and you need a trainer’s guidance in order to make change happen.
Here’s my issue with that - most people know what they want, but they don’t have specific and fully developed fitness goals. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve sat down with a beginner client and asked what their goals are and the answer I get in return is something along the lines of “I want to lose 20 pounds” or “I want to tone up.” In turn I’d have to get specific with them by asking what movements they want to learn, what modalities they do and don’t enjoy, what amount of time they are realistically able to dedicate to their fitness, and so on and so forth. My job is to be a trainer, and I actually do enjoy having these conversations with people, but there’s room for error when we start from ground zero together.
Firstly, and I say this with absolute conviction, your only friend in the gym should not be your trainer. Community at the gym is proven way to keep people motivated and interested in their fitness. People will stay at the same gym, even when the equipment is falling apart, the AC is leaking or broken, or the staff is terrible, because of the people they see at the gym. People also find more motivation to show up to the gym when they know their friends or their gym crush is going to be there. You should establish some semblance of a gym community before you start working with a trainer. Secondly, shoveling money out of your pocket will definitely weigh you down in the hopes of seeing results. Generally when we pay for something, we look for instant gratification (we can again blame capitalism and rampant consumerism for this). Fitness never has been and never will be a source of instant gratification. In order to trust the process, avoid paying the big bucks up front and instead see what you can and can’t do on your own. Show yourself that the change is possible first, before you begin to invest in a trainer, that the way when you’re paying for a trainer’s guidance you already know that it’s well worth it because you know the results will come cause you’ve already seen how consistency on your own made change. Thirdly, these initial 90 days that you spend working out on your own will be the source of inspiration. You will get to spend time in a gym, or just moving your body and trying to learn more on your own. This gives you the time to become specific with what it is you want to do. It’s day 1 in the gym and you have no idea what a deadlift is, but now it’s day 90 in the gym and you’ve seen the same girl deadlifting since day 1, so you did your research and now you a specified goal to take to the trainer you end up working with. Specified goals will also help you when trying to select a trainer. Every trainer can teach you how to deadlift, but a barbell technique specific trainer is going to teach you the sport of the deadlift. You wouldn’t ask a math teacher to help you write an english essay, and same applies here. You wouldn’t ask a body building coach to teach you athleticism and mobility. You wouldn’t as a powerlifting coach to teach you how to become absolutely shredded. Become specific, and the path will become obvious.
I’ve given you my three reasons as to why I believe people should start their fitness journeys on their own.
I’ll also share with you the exceptions I have to this belief.
First, if you struggle with discipline or motivation, this will not work for you. If this is the case, I recommend looking for a coach, not a trainer. You may be thinking… what’s the difference. There’s a huge difference. A trainer will tell you what to do when to do it, they’ll show you how to do things correctly and they’ll send you on your merry way. A coach will do all of those things, but they’ll also help you build sustainable habits, they’ll help you push past your limiting beliefs, they’ll hold you accountable and do check-ins with you, they’ll make appropriate adjustments to your program without you having to say anything, they will monitor ver closely, your journey and course correct if something is not lining up with the path. Second, if you’ve had multiple failed starts to your fitness journey, I also believe looking for a coach will benefit you for the same reasons above. You may already have some knowledge around fitness, or you may have been very active back in the day, but again - the struggle is consistency and accountability. A coach is meant to be an accountability partner, it goes deeper than teaching someone the movements, it’s about reworking the brain’s chemistry associated with fitness.
If you don’t fall into either of these exception categories, then to you I say, pick up a weight and start moving it. We’ll talk in 90 days!

adidas and LES MILLS Unveil Innovative New Training Offering Built for Next Gen Fitness Fans
Tumblr media
Meeting the most active generation where they are - adidas and Les Mills debuted first chapter of partnership, delivering over 10,000 workouts over the course of the weekend at LES MILLS LIVE L.A.
Training offering built alongside international research across 16–26-year-old next gen athletes reveals ‘Strength’ training as their top workout type[1] whilst 68%[2] say they are more likely to exercise in high-energy training spaces
New science-backed strength workout LES MILLS SHAPESÔ  presented with adidas had its global launch at LES MILLS LIVE L.A. supported by adidas’ innovative training wear – Dropset 2 and the FW23 Strength Collection
This weekend, adidas and Les Mills took to the stage in Los Angeles, the home of fitness, for LES MILLS LIVE L.A. – the biggest event of its 2023 world tour. The two sports powerhouses showcased the future of training with world-class Les Mills trainers captivating thousands of fitness fans including adidas athletes Nia Dennis, Giselle Rodriguez and Francheska Martinez. Stronger together, the two brands launched some of the most powerful fitness programs, supported by adidas’ latest strength product innovations, with a focus on building a stronger mind and body for a worldwide community. The partnership is underpinned by membership rewards and benefits across adiClub and LES MILLS+, to create access like never before for members across the world.
To get closer than ever to the next gen community’s training attitudes and behaviours the partnership leverages data gathered from over 4,000 16-26-year-olds. Harnessing the knowledge that in the gym, 71% of Gen Z athletes enjoy bodyweight training, 63% practice Pilates, while 57% like to do yoga sessions[3], the partnership launches brand new workout LES MILLS SHAPES, presented with adidas. Expertly developed to meet the needs of the next gen, the strength-focused workout is inspired by Pilates, barre, and power yoga. The program has undergone rigorous testing with the next-gen community by scientific experts, with a University of the Fraser Valley study unearthing key improvements it can have on performance. This includes, back and abdominal endurance – helping to build core control and functional strength.
Complementing the new workout, and as part of adidas’ commitment to training as a sport, the collaboration spotlights its next iteration of high-performance adidas training apparel and footwear – the Dropset 2 and FW23 Strength Collection. With ‘Strength’ training revealed as the number one workout type for this community, the products have been designed to provide optimal fit and performance for this type of training.
Worn by world-renowned Les Mills trainers for the filming of LES MILLS SHAPES, presented with adidas, plus additional strength-based workouts, the adidas Dropset 2 features a low midsole drop height to provide athletes with a flatter grounding for stability and alignment, all whilst helping to distribute weight evenly when transferring force from feet to the ground. Whilst the Strength Collection brings comfort and functionality to the fore, made in part with at least 30% recycled materials, each piece incorporates adidas’ AEROREADY technology, to help the athlete feel dry during every power move.
With 72%[4] of 16-26 year old regular exercisers working out both in the gym and outside of it – LES MILLS SHAPES presented with adidas will be available both on the LES MILLS+ Training App and in-gym from early August. Providing the next generation with access, value and rewards, the partnership will offer members of adidas’s free global membership programme - adiClub - with generous discounts for LES MILLS+ Training App subscriptions. They’ll also have the opportunity to unlock redeemable adiClub points every time they complete an in-app Les Mills workout, including LES MILLS SHAPES presented with adidas.
