Malacañan Palace, Manila - We were privileged to be given a tour of the historic facilities and living quarters of the serving President (currently “Bongbong” Marcos, son of Ferdinand and Imelda, who also grew up in Malacañan Palace) and it did not disappoint! I bought my own barong to wear for the occasion, and was fascinated with the history preserved within. Our guide was passionate and knowledgeable, and the rooms were most impressive. On Saturday 10•15 I had the honor of returning to the Magkaisa Conference (after a three year pause) for the 20th anniversary event, to give two career presentations about my 22 years as a working tattoo artist. I love giving these talks, and I have done them many times over the years. I especially love doing the Magkaisa (“unity”) conference because it gives me tremendous pride to connect with other Filipinos in the community who are making a difference for young Filipino students who are simultaneously navigating two different cultures in a changing society. I love being an example of a viable “unconventional” career, which, if you know Filipinos, isn’t generally encouraged (shout out to all the nurses!! 🤍)-I was lucky that my parents recognized my abilities and encouraged me, and it means a lot to be able to pay it forward a bit by encouraging these young’uns 🥰 I’m also so proud of my peers who organized and contributed to Magkaisa, especially my amazing former Chula Vista High classmates-turned-educators @ricardo.cooke @amamasuy and @dr.josafat - this is some deep cultural circle of life stuff and I’m all about it.
