Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood
#I tried to capture the juxtaposition of the glam nightlife with the bleak truth of living in such a fraught political era#the hedonistic moments people were trying to live in vs the encroaching future of Hitler's reign#and I don't think I succeeded but the story itself sure did#one day this book may no longer feel disturbingly relevant#tw nazi imagery#(that very last picture is of a real life demonstration outside the Hirschfeld institute)#Goodbye to Berlin#Cabaret#Christopher Isherwood#from what I can tell through the book itself and a small amount of research he was kind of a nonce#but I have to admit he wrote well#books 2024#bookedit#litedit#file under my collages aren't good but I'm having fun anyway

"...and to this hour the image of Carmilla returns to mind with ambiguous alterations--sometimes the playful, languid, beautiful girl; sometimes the writhing fiend I saw in the ruined church; and often from a reverie I have started, fancying I heard the light step of Carmilla at the drawing room door."

Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu
#I see a lot of people pair this book with the classic stark black and red vampire vibes#and I totally get why#but I wanted to try something a little more dreamlike because of how often Laura mentions dreams in the book#Carmilla#litedit#bookedit#books 2023#file under my collages aren't good but I'm having fun anyway

"Poor, unhappy Erik! Shall we pity him? Shall we curse him? He asked only to be 'some one,' like everybody else. But he was too ugly! And he had to hide his genius or use it to play tricks with, when, with an ordinary face, he would have been one of the most distinguished of mankind! He had a heart that could have held the entire empire of the world; and, in the end, he had to content himself with a cellar. Ah, yes, we must need pity the Opera ghost..."

#this is yet another book that's significantly different from the film adaptation in case anyone was wondering#some parts you can really tell were written by a man in the 1960s and certain bits have aged terribly#the protag is kind of a dick in multiple senses of the term#but I can also understanding why it was considered such a groundbreaking piece for its time#as a speculative work it's pretty fascinating#do androids dream of electric sheep?#philip k dick#blade runner#file under my collages aren't good but I'm having fun anyway#books 2023#amusing myself by casting Hedy Lamarr as Rachael#sosy don't look#litedit#bookedit
