what is ftmsteverogers
Ao3 author, wrote a post canon destiel fic I read for the first time this week that is kind of a play by play of Most Common Destiel Reunion Miscommunications (which to be clear I loved, I just had never seen them laid out in a fan fiction before, because I don’t read fanfiction). Also wrote fenario which was the biiiiiiig one. colloquially referred to as “lake house fic”. Also one I’d never read that I’m reading now and is laying out a lot of fanon that still knocks around today

just felt like letting you know im makin my way through your spn bookmarks on ao3 and its saving my life 💚 do you have an ultimate-nothing-compares destiel faves from the bunch?
YES omg these are the fics that rewired my brain changed my life etc:
And this your living kiss (M, 56k): au where dean is a self deprecating former poet who used to write anonymously under the pen name jack allen. Now he’s finding his way back to loving poetry by taking a class at a college taught by professor novak… only he doesn’t know professor novak happens to be the number one jack allen scholar in the country. Amazing. Inspiring. I’ve reread it several times and it’s probably my favourite fic of all time
The cheapest room in the house (E, 89k): one of those fics whose writing i’m jealous of, it’s mind bogglingly good. And hot. The destiel grindr fic — cas downloads grindr and dean helps him. The rituals are SO intricate. But really, nothing i could say could do justice to how good this is.
Fenario (E, 47k): cas empty rescue fic. Certain paragraphs and scenes are just seared into my brain, amazing writing. I still think about “Cas’s legs give out and he pitches forward, falling the rest of the way into Dean’s lap in a mockery of a pieta” — that’s the point where i knew this fic was gonna become a fave
Right where you left me (E, 93k): cas comes back from the empty but it’s years later. He rings the doorbell and finds dean married. This fic was an event while it was still updating. Supremely well written and with an emotional maturity needed for the theme
Am I a man or am I a muppet (G, 7k): one of the funniest fics i’ve ever read. Dean wakes up as a muppet. Just roll with it! It’s crack, sure, but so good?? This inspired a scene in one of my gomens fics even
Burn this into your brains forever (E, 10k): to me this is an underrated fic for how funny it is. Fake dating between dean and garth but don’t worry, it’s a destiel fic
Half empty (M, 37k): more of a dean study. Reads like you’re dreaming and nothing makes sense. Dean is confused about everything. Kind of a mysterious vibe, excellent writing
There is rest for the wicked (G, 14k): sleepy, domestic dean. The destiel happens so…. Idk. Naturally. It’s a fic that really stays with you for a long time
Ninety one whiskey (E, 401k): one of thee destiel fics of all time. It’s famously a must-read and for good reason. A war fic, so quite heavy and not for everyone. But an absolute experience. I read the last few chapters in bed middle of the night tears streaming down my face. Simply iconic
A winter’s tale (T, 64k): this fic forever changed the way i see cas’ human arc on the show. Not super destiel-y but can be read that way. Again quite heavy. Northernsparrow is an excellent writer.
The dean winchester beat sheet (E, 144k): au where dean is in college and in complete and utter denial about his sexuality. So supremely funny. I will say this dean is not for everyone. But to me he is iconic and i think about certain scenes still. Forever changed the song i want to break free for me.
What has eight tentacles and isn’t allowed to eat pie? (T, 16k): basically uhhhh dean gets turned into an octopus. HEAR ME OUT. This fic will change you fundamentally as a person. It’s funny but also smart. A classic!
Maybe it really is the end (M, 2k): it’s short but there’s not a word out of place. Basically, belphegor taunts dean and cas while in the body of jack. It’s so good and so underrated. I think about it all the time
How a grocer watches dean pull his head out of his ass in seven days (E, 51k): destiel written from an outsider pov, a christian lady who’s easily scandalised and whose narrative voice is SO hilarious. One of the funniest fics i’ve ever read. Fake dating too!

end of year fic rec 💌
i usually do this on twitter but i felt like doing a post instead of a thread this time! i mainly had four ship obsessions this year as you will see below. all of these are complete works!
DESTIEL
A Different Kind of Monster by roadtonowhere, xfrancyfranart, 89k
Something in Bodie, California is luring truckers to their deaths and Dean’s on his way to take it out. It’s the first time Bobby’s given him a case and, with Sam at Stanford and his dad off chasing demons, he's finally hunting monsters on his own. When an accidental encounter puts an as-of-yet-unknown monster in the passenger seat of his car, Dean decides to ice him, taking his dad's old adage to heart: a monster is always a monster. Unfortunately, Dean can’t seem to figure out what kind of monster "Castiel" is and he certainly can’t shake him.
something suddenly everywhere by noviembre, 50k
What good is a soldier without a war to fight? -- Dean, adrift without Cas in a world that doesn't remember ending and desperately refusing to believe in the hope Jack offers, stumbles out of hunting and into a life he's absolutely not equipped for -- except for how it might just be the one thing that can keep him together.
Plain Language by thalius, 57k
Charlie sets her beer down hard on the counter, making him flinch. “Are you trying to invent a problem?” she asks incredulously. “What? No, dude, I’m telling you—” “Your boyfriend turned down sex twice, once because you were concussed and your arm was broken, and once because he was about to drive out of state to help your brother,” Charlie summarises, brutal and unrelenting. “And you think that, what? You can never ask him for sex again because of that?”
Dean’s been playing catch-up his entire life, and he’s still figuring out the whole “asking for what I want” thing.
Fenario by ftmsteverogers, 47k
“We did good, Dean,” Sam says. “We got him back.” Dean huffs a hollow laugh, because yeah, that’s always what it’s about, isn’t it? Cas or Sam or Dean getting themselves lost or dead, and then taking turns dragging each other back from the brink. He shrugs, shoving his hands into his pockets. “We got him back, yeah,” he says. Sam nods, watching him. “So now what?”
On Labor by a_good_soldier, 24k
Cas is back from the Empty, and Dean knows how to be grateful.
Four Letter Word For Intercourse by bendingsignpost, 194k
As a grease monkey turned college freshman, Dean's constantly three seconds away from being stressed out of his mind. It hardly helps that he's finally figuring out his sexuality in his thirties. What might help with that stress is a little phone number (and a big credit card bill). If he can't figure out how to be bisexual in person, he can at least give it a go over the phone, right? (It's probably a bad idea, but he really can't help himself.)
LAURENT/DAMEN
Hand in unlovable hand by thickenmyblood, 432k
Damen and Laurent break up. Nicaise brings them back together.
ain't it a gentle sound by cloudings, 18k
A lowly member of Patran royalty seeks reparations after learning of the marriage between Laurent of Vere and Damianos of Akielos, announcing that a betrothal contract between himself and Laurent had been drawn up by the traitor Regent when he was King. It is not gold that he wants to be repaid. He seems to underestimate just how much Damen is still aching for revenge on the Regent — and anyone else who dares attempt to come between them. “It is simple,” he says. “By way of reparations for this betrayal, I ask for one night with the Prince of Vere.”
bells for him by kybelles, 42k
Damen's already unpleasant visit to Arles takes a sour turn when he and Laurent get into an argument.
Concordia by Ccaina03
He’d had hope, after those talks, that when the sting of Olympic loss had faded he and Auguste would be able to salvage something of their old friendship. This doesn’t seem likely now. Sorry I gave you a concussion when I checked you is one thing; sorry I beat you out for the gold medal and then had your little brother wear it while I fucked him is another.
LOUSTAT
the landscape after cruelty by kurtstiel, 6k
Louis clears his throat before he does something unwise like kiss him. “It’s a rainfall shower. Humans have developed a lot of useful things in the last century.” “I like Siri,” Lestat tells him, with a tone of grave importance. “Yeah,” Louis replies, finding himself smiling again. “I know you do.”
Or: In the aftermath of the reunion, Louis takes Lestat back to his hotel.
inertia by chinxe, 9k
Louis gaped at him. “You…do know what it is I’m asking, right?” “But of course,” Lestat sniffed. “You want us to move past this oh-so-casual arrangement we have been cultivating for the past years, n’est-ce pas? You want us to date? Well, Louis, my answer is no.”
Lestat plays hard to get. Louis plays along.
we'll be diamond when the golden days are done by rickybobby, 43k
“Daniel, nothing is going on with me and Lestat.” He scoffs, his violet eyes flashing orange in an instant. “Well, that’s a terrible lie. Are you going to get back together again?” “No,” Louis says, perhaps a bit too forcefully. “We’re just friends. We’re taking it slow. And that’s good. It’s safe. I’m fine.” “Right, ok. Let me summarise: you’re not together, but you talk every day. You still want to fuck him, but you’ve unilaterally decided that you’ll take it slow until some point when you can’t anymore, and you’ve not discussed any of this with him. Is that correct?” Daniel states, ignoring Louis’ hiss of irritation. “That explains everything, actually.” --- Louis is determined to be more honest with himself and Lestat. Daniel tries to help, but for the most part, this only makes things worse.
Fifth Avenue by ohofcourse, 105k
After years of chilly separation, Claudia finds Lestat de Lioncourt, now the resident pianist at the New York Philharmonic, and asks for his help in ending Louis' fraught new relationship. A reinterpretation of the first two seasons of iwtv in a modern setting.
Ten Minutes by Lydia_Eve, 31k
“What say you for the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac — guilty or not guilty?” “Guilty!” “And the sentence?” “Death!”
Time restarts. Lestat tries to get it right.
DEVIL'S MINION
in the deafening polar province called You by shineforthee, 145k
Daniel is sprawled out across the bed, loose-limbed and lazy, somehow filling all the open space it has to offer and leaving Armand to nestle into the gaps. His cheeks are flushed, blood pooling like it knows what comes next. Maybe it does. Armand was reading about classical conditioning the other day. About dogs who become accustomed to getting food when their handler rings a bell. Perhaps Daniel is the dog, Armand’s teeth sharp bells reverberating in his veins. Or perhaps Armand is the dog, Daniel’s blood a song rattling in his ears. He has been a dog before. He runs his tongue along the bow of Daniel’s collarbone, gathers the salt-sweat there and imagines what it tastes like because Daniel does. Armand remembers he loved Daniel, once, and that Daniel loved him. Or a version of them did, at least. It isn't his intention to go back to that, but it's not not his intention, either. Such is the prerogative of an immortal: to hold two contradicting desires simultaneously. If nothing else, it passes the time while he waits for this miserable interview to end.
strange mutations by leavethebes, 11k
Armand’s done it to him once before—gored him through the stomach, gutted him like a fish, snipped his gills off, and drained him right down to the fluttering valves of his heart. Left Daniel little more than a shriveled husk of a person, and somehow Daniel is back here anyway, on his knees in front of Armand and begging for the oblivion that was promised.
eighty proof and a lifetime by doztoevsky, 8k
It’s just - anticlimactic. New York Times Bestselling Blue Balls of a conclusion to the Armand of it all. He can picture the pierced graduate students at his indie bookstore readings now; their dubious, unsatisfied frowns of so, what, he just sat there? And you just left?
give me one good movie kiss and i'll be alright by moonieangel, 7k
The curtains were open, light streaming into the room. Why the hell were the curtains open? Irritated, Daniel drew the pillow over his head. It was promptly yanked away from him. Armand’s face was even closer now, bug eyes so near Daniel swore he could feel the feathery wires of eyelashes flutter against his skin. “We are going now.” “ Now?” Daniel asked. “Why now?” Armand looked very pleased with himself. “I have acquired a job.” (Armand gets hired as an action movie stuntman in a bid to impress Daniel, who doesn't really get the message.)
the sin and this mess we're in by ringfinger, 30k
He’s sitting on a beach he hates, trading shitty jokes with a centuries-old monster whose body count would put Ed Gein to shame and who is almost certainly also plotting to turn him into a flesh lampshade. “Don’t be dramatic,” Armand says, picking up on that thread, “I do wish you’d stop returning to that.”
& its sequel, that city sewer slut's the vibe by ringfinger, 5k
Your agent is undressing me with his eyes. Armand’s voice is soft, a little amused. He wants to know if the underwear matches. Daniel swallows. Armand’s nails scrape at his inner thigh, muted by denim and latex. Well, does it?
a haunting just for company by valkyrisms, 49k
"I know what a breakup looks like," Daniel says. "The better question is, why are you coming to me about it? I'm the one who broke up your little sham." "This is what humans do, don't they?" Armand asks, letting his voice drop. "Crashing on their friends' couches when there's a blip in their romances?" "Except we're not friends. We're actually very much not friends." Daniel shrugs, as if it's all the same to him. "And I can't imagine the great vampire Armand deigning himself to sleep on my fucked-up sofa. That thing's been here since the nineties." "Well," Armand only says. "I saw you have a guest bedroom."
to make tenderness a cleaving cut by earwen_neruda, 8k
Thus spoke the only fledging the vampire Armand will ever sire, after two years of premeditated severance: “I have it on good authority that if you kill me now, Louis will send you flowers.”
Delicate Machinery by LilacTinsel, 21k
In 1973, Armand makes him an offer. Daniel takes it, not knowing it leads him down a spiral that will make them both come apart.
the spiral is unspooling by reedroad, 157k
From 1974 to 1978, Daniel Molloy filmed his day to day life in an attempt to document the horror story he lived with. In 2022, Armand gives him a chance to revisit a documentary unfinished.
flash the camera (you're a star) by exastris_scientia, 10k
Daniel is starting to think he should put a little more thought into the promises he makes in the heat of the moment. He’d qualified it a little, sure, so technically he doesn’t have to do it. And it’s not like he needs the money, not after Louis and Armand had thrown his that’s my whore number comment back in his face by actually paying him ten million fucking dollars. But a promise is a promise, even if it’s one literally no one would expect him to follow through on. Whatever. He said he would, so he will. It might be fun. So he starts an OnlyFans.
let the rock roll by volkswagonblues, 68k
This is bullshit. Daniel has spent two years persistently dialling Armand’s mental phone number in the vampire psychic network, and after two years of getting the equivalent of ‘the number you’re trying to reach no longer exists,’ he bumps into his maker in a dinky little repair shop. In Canada. Smelling like—this is where Daniel must be going crazy, because Armand smelled like a human in there. An unremarkable, blood-filled, regular human, with notes of stale sweat and artificial lemon detergent. Which part of the vampiric telenovela that makes up Daniel’s life is this again? (OR, the fic where Armand shows up again as a human, but Daniel's still a vampire, and then they do role-reversal Devil's Minion nonsense)

Fenario by @sodomitecastiel
My first time binding a fic properly! I really liked the story and wanted it to be physical, so here it is :)
Pictured here is the author's copy, which they now have. I have one for my own shelf with different endpapers, but otherwise it was made the same.
I recommend checking out this and his other work! Not only for Supernatural, but there are multiple stories there that I come back to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Featuring these headbands! First time doing three colours!
Another first is the way I made the bookcloth, I used wheat paste and stuck it on a window until it dried. It surprised me and turned out really well? So I might do it again! The only thing is it takes longer than ironing on glue, but it is a traditional (and cheaper) method to make bookcloth, so I like it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More pictures :) I got the title on the spine by printing it onto a type of transfer paper that you can iron onto fabric. It actually turned out better than I expected, significantly better and easier than handprinting, so I will definitely keep up that method.
There are probably more things to say. Typesetting was fun and I tried out so many glyphs before settling on the bees and sunflowers I did. This is the only image I took with both.

Brokedown Palace
Tumblr media
Brust is such a pro at nailing a distinct voice for his books. I love how this doesn't read like any of his other books (except maybe bits of The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars because there's a bit of fairytale storytelling to that one too).
The amount of stunningly beautiful paragraphs in this book is ridiculous.
Spoilers below.
Devera shows up on page 17 (of course), and mentions that "her friend" told her to visit the East. I can't remember any specific point where Vlad tells her that, buuuuuut maybe it has to do with Jhegaala? Miklós asks her at the end when she reappears if she has seen what she meant to see in Fenario, and she said she had, but with Devera (and the years that passed between their two meetings) that could mean anything.
Once you've read any of the other Dragaera novels, it's hard to not constantly think about how this book relates to the others. The Empire - always referred to as Faerie - is never actually seen here, even though three of the major characters have been there, learned sorcery, and returned to Fenario.
The setting here always gave the impression that it takes place before even the Khaavren romances, but I always forget about certain bits that, during this reread, made me rethink that. I'd need more clues, but some things Devera says at the end feel like they're meant to hint at a closer connection to Vlad.
There is a point where Miklos is reflecting on his time in the Empire, and notes that the Baron he served could teleport ("An effort of will, and he could be miles away"). If I remember correctly, teleportation was not possible until after Zerika returned with the Orb. Or maybe it was simply difficult.
I also don't remember many (or any?) people using telepathy in the Khaavren novels until after Zerika returns as well, and Devera asks Miklós if Bölk can speak mentally.
I find myself wondering so often how magical things in Brokedown Palace correspond to sorcery or witchcraft as it's presented in other books. It's easy to read a great deal into this, while forgetting that this story is, essentially, a fairy tale. Vlad might be something of an unreliable narrator of his own stories, and Paarfi takes "artistic licenses," but BP is a fairy tale, and it's got fairy tales in the interludes to remind you of it. But it's still fun to think about.
I poked around a bit to see if anyone else had more insight on this book - I quite liked bits of this review by Jo Walton.
"Looked at one way Miklós goes into Faerie and labours for two years and comes back as a wizard. Looked at another he goes into the Empire, becomes a Teckla, gets a perfectly ordinary connection to the Orb and learns a little sorcery."
This is a fantastic observation. Sandor is the only one with enough skill in sorcery to challenge Miklós, but we barely see him do anything with it. And while there are witches in Fenario, they are isolated and hiding. The greatest magic in Fenario is whatever is going on with the River and the Tree.
Bölk, of course, is another one of those strong magical forces at play. Maybe the closest thing we've encountered to it in the other books are demons, but that doesn't feel right (admitting here I don't remember a lot of the rules about demons). He is able to be used as a weapon against Verra the Demon Goddess, and that feels more like a peer to her. Can the Demon Goddess be banished with the blood of a demon? Seems unlikely. But they know one another, and it sounds like they have tussled before.
I honestly kind of loved the structure of this book. Miklós chapters, followed by interludes, followed by a chapter from the perspective of one of the other characters, then another interlude, and back to Miklós. The sixteenth chapter takes some of that structure (Miklós; another character; Miklós; the next character) and I think it's very well done that way. The narrative shifts as the action does, and it is satisfying when you catch the pattern.
I do end up wondering if it would have been better without the hints at the connection to Vlad, especially if the hints turn out to be nothing. Devera knows what will happen to Miklós's daughter - "I won't have to watch over her; everyone else will have to watch out for her." That's pretty much all we get. Well, we know of one super dangerous human lady, with no patronymic and a fuzzy history. How does that impact how we look at her story, if we remember that her grandfather may have been a demon?
