What Skyscrapers Reveal About The Countries That Build Them

A skyscraper is a statement of ambition. No surprise, then, that Saudi Arabia wants to build the world’s tallest. Construction on the Jeddah Tower stopped in 2018 but will restart soon; when completed, it will be the first building ever to rise to a dizzying 1,000 metres. The Jeddah Tower’s nearly 170 storeys will house the usual combination of luxury flats, hotel rooms and offices. On one side visitors will be able to gaze on a new financial district; on another, across the Red Sea.

The building may cost around $1.2bn, but that is a trifling sum given the more than $1trn that Saudi Arabia is spending on developing infrastructure, luring tourists and repositioning itself on the global stage. Leaders see the tower, which resembles a jagged splinter of glass, as a symbol of the kingdom’s power. It “sends a financial and economic message that should not be ignored”, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who is overseeing the project, has said.

If that is the case, other places are sending out similar steely messages. There are 236 “supertall” buildings across the world—a label given to anything bigger than 300 metres—and 160 of them have been erected since 2014, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), a research group. Another 96 are under way. These hulking piles reshape skylines and cities. And, as well as reaching skyward, they point towards geopolitical and cultural trends. Which countries are building supertalls, and why?

The Middle East is home to 20% of all supertalls. The United Arab Emirates, like Saudi Arabia, is showing off its oil wealth and status as one of the region’s fastest-growing economies. It has 35 supertalls; Dubai alone boasts 31, more than any other city. Its behemoth is the Burj Khalifa, which, at 828 metres, has been the world’s tallest tower since opening in 2010. (Reportedly only 71% of the Burj Khalifa is usable space; the rest is “vanity height”.)

Asia has a great love of heights, too, having built more than two-thirds of all supertalls in the past decade. A recent addition is Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, which was completed last year. At 679 metres tall, it pushed its way into second place. China, which had barely any skyscrapers before 1980, now has five of the ten tallest. The country is home to more skyscrapers per person than America. Some 70% of the supertalls under construction are going up in China. Twenty-five of them, if completed, will rank among the world’s top 100 tallest buildings.

China’s upward trajectory has practical causes. Until recently, the country’s population was surging, rising from 980m in 1980 to 1.4bn today. And those seeking work are still moving from the countryside to the cities, where 66% of people live. Height also helps with urban density, making commuting distances shorter.

But politics provides additional mo­tivation for city planners to think big. “Officials in small cities are particularly prone to build tall,” says Jason Barr, an economist and the author of the book “Cities in the Sky: The Quest to Build the World’s Tallest Skyscrapers”. Strivers in the Communist Party see supertalls as a way to put their lower-tier cities on the map—and perhaps gain attention from central-government bigwigs.

Only 10% of supertalls built in the past decade have sprung up in America, the ancestral home of the skyscraper. (The first were built in New York and Chicago in the late 1880s.) New York, a city known for its gigantic buildings, has gained a few, including super-thin towers south of Central Park in a cluster nicknamed “Billionaires’ Row”. There are still many economic incentives to go high, particularly in New York: land is expensive, and its population is among the most concentrated of any American city. But gaining approval for new buildings is a complex process, thanks to 3,300 pages of zoning regulations.

The number of storeys may be soaring, but some countries nevertheless prefer to stay closer to the ground. In the European Union only Poland has a supertall building (Britain, an ex-member, has one too: the Shard). Skyscrapers are often regarded as “gauche” on the continent, says Daniel Safarik of CTBUH. In London and Rome new edifices are not allowed to block views of certain landmarks, making it hard to build upwards. Paris has banned construction of new tall buildings in response to “ugly” skyscrapers. On X one French person called the Montparnasse Tower, a Brutalist building from 1973, the greatest affront to Paris since the Nazi occupation.

When designing a supertall, architects must not have their heads in the clouds. The first serious order of business is to make sure the building does not get buffeted or blown over. “Wind is the governing factor” of supertall design, says Gordon Gill, who co-designed the Jeddah Tower. As buildings go up and up, so do wind forces. Engineers calculated that the Burj Khalifa, for instance, needed to be able to stand tall amid winds of 150mph (240kph), equivalent to a strong tornado.

To avoid a statement of grandeur becoming a parable of ineptitude, architects have to “confuse” the wind using diff­erent shapes. Thinness, tapering, twisting, round edges and cut-outs at the top of the building all help, and there are interior as well as exterior solutions. At 432 Park Avenue in New York, five double-floors are left empty to let the wind pass through. Taipei 101 in Taiwan features a steel pendulum, weighing some 728 tonnes, that swings to counteract wind-induced movement.

Given the role of skyscrapers as symbols, architects must also pay close attention to what they look like. Note that the Woolworth Building in New York, the tallest in the world from 1913-30, has a copper roof and gargoyles to reflect its status as a “cathedral of commerce”. Today those commissioning supertalls, particularly in Asia and the Middle East, want the building to stand for cultural confidence as well as a specific sense of place.

Mr Gill says he consults historians to learn about relevant symbolism: for the façade of the proposed Greenland Tower in Xi’an, he evoked the armour of the terracotta soldiers of the ancient Qin dynasty. The spiral shape of Israel’s first supertall, currently under construction in Tel Aviv, recalls a biblical scroll. Merdeka 118 looks rather like a syringe, but its design was supposedly inspired by the shape of Tunku Abdul Rahman’s hand, evoking the statesman who proclaimed Malaysian independence in 1957.

The sky is not the only limit for supertalls. Enterprising countries all want spectacular buildings, at least until they decide they have had enough. China’s officials are clamping down on “weird” buildings. Edifices that look like “giant trousers”—the nickname given to a building in Beijing designed by Rem Koolhaas—are now verboten. In 2021 the government imposed a height cap of 500 metres and banned cities with fewer than 3m residents from building above 250 metres. (It is thought that safety problems, an oversupply of commercial offices and lots of vacant residential buildings motivated this policy.)

More engineering breakthroughs are needed, too, if buildings are to go higher. It was elevator innovations that helped set off skyscrapers in the late 1800s. But Adrian Smith, one of the architects on the Burj Khalifa, says that lift technology has long been a limiting factor. Existing steel cables have a travel distance of around 500 metres, meaning that it is not possible to get a single lift to the top of many supertalls. (Wind also puts extra strain on the cables.) Yet multiple banks of lifts are difficult to fit into tall, thin buildings. The Jeddah Tower will instead use carbon-fibre, a lighter material that can take lifts higher.

If and when it is possible for buildings to rise higher, no doubt some tycoon or tyrant will want to start a mile-high club. Supertall buildings are monuments to human ingenuity and modernity. But most of all, as Mason Cooley, an American humorist, put it, “A skyscraper is a boast in glass and steel.”

Sandro Miceli is too nice for his own good. The middle child in an always-growing, always-screaming Italian family, Sandro walks around on a broken foot to not bother his busy parents. All he wants is to get out and never look back.

When fate—in the form of a party that gets busted—brings these two very different boys together, neither of them could’ve predicted finding a love that they’d risk everything for…

God where to even start. I fucking loved this book—I finished it last night, and I'm spending the day depressed because I'm no longer listening to it (audiobook). I took so many notes while reading this, and there were only a few minor critiques. Otherwise I was doing my best to put into words why I love this story so much.

The tagline for this book describes it as "unapologetically blunt and unforgettably real," which I think is spot on. It wasn't a sometimes-sad romance novel, but rather a story about two flawed yet earnest boys who better themselves (and FEEL better about themselves) with the help of each other. Yes it's a romance, but I love the platonic elements of the relationship so much; they truly become each other's best friend, and you can see how important their relationship is to each of them.

We get a dual POV in this book, and it was so expertly deployed. There's quite a lot of introspection (which I always enjoy in a novel), so we get firsthand accounts of how each character is feeling, but we also get to see them through the eyes of each other; we get to know their insecurities, but also get to see their strengths and value. Both Bash and Sandro are pretty self-aware, and I don't know how realistic that is for teenage boys, but it doesn't matter because it's all so good. And just because they're self-aware doesn't mean they're perfect; we get to see them make mistakes and learn and grow. There were plenty of times between them that the conversation could have gone south, but instead they are able to trust each other and talk it out.

Of course, though, there is one moment that goes very wrong and takes a while to come back from, but it was realistic. I feel like the tendency for authors nowadays is to throw in third-act drama whether it's deserved or not, but that wasn't the case here; the events fit the narrative of the story (it's pretty clear from early on that this book will have the potential for something heart-wrenching). Also, we got plenty of recovery time after it—I always hate when the story ends right after the conflict has been resolved, but here we got to spend a good amount of time with them afterwords.

This book just made me feel so much! Not just sad, but also hopeful. While I love both boys in this, I was a bit partial to Sandro, and he was the one who often made me cry (both sad and happy tears). Even though he had a shitty upbringing, he was still so optimistic about his future being better and working hard to make that better future, and it was just so lovely to read about and I'm literally tearing up while thinking about it. The ending was perfect for them, realistic yet hopeful, kind of like the whole story itself. I was fully sobbing when I finished, because I was just so overcome with emotion.

Besides the main story, I think the side characters were all very well crafted and utilized. Lucy was especially such a lovely figure, and I wish we had gotten to spend a bit more time with her (just because I like her, not because she wasn't around enough for the purpose of the story). And the writing was also top tier. I know I've gone on about how emotional this book was, but it had a good amount of lighthearted moments. And good humor! It got me to chuckle out loud a few times, which is unusual for me—it helped that I listened to the audiobook, so I couldn't accidentally skim ahead and spoil the joke for myself.

Speaking of the audiobook, MAD KUDOS to the readers for this!!!! I think they were absolutely perfect, right away settling me into the story and perfectly delivering the more emotional moments.

This is one of those books that I think a lot of other books try to be: gritty, realistic, emotional, heart-wrenching, inspiring, etc. But this one was actually able to pull it off. And while it is grittier than some, I didn't find it to be too much. Like I said, there was a good balance of humor, so it was never a heavy read, even with it's heavier moments. Frankly, I'm a bit stunned that this isn't more popular, because it deserves more readers. I simply cannot wait to revisit this book in the future (no literally, I'm actually considering re-listening to it while I still have it on loan from Libby).

July 12 - Taipei 101

Today, we visited Taipei 101. Built in 2004, it is the tallest building in Taiwan and currently the 11th tallest building in the world, with 101 floors totaling 508 meters tall. This building isn't just unique for its height, but the engineering behind it. Taipei 101 has a Tuned Mass Damper that we visited on the 88th floor. This damper is 660 tons, 5.5 meters in diameter, and made of steel plates welded into a gold sphere. It acts as a center of gravity that sways in place of the building. It is connected to strong steel cables that help it move. It can sway up to ~5 feet and is built to survive a magnitude 10 earthquake, typhoons, and strong winds. The 89th floor is the main tourist area, with a 360 degree view of Taiwan. Everything on this floor is within glass and there are *vibey* decorated areas that make the space seem peaceful. They also have a gift shop and food in the center of this floor. You can see everything here. As you walk up to the 91st floor, you feel the wind first. Then you see Taiwan. This is basically the same view as the 89th floor, except it's outside.

Not only is this building tall, but it was the record holder for the fastest elevator from 2004-2015. It moves up at 1010 meters per minute. That means you can take the 5th floor to the 89th floor in 37 seconds.

This building is also special because of the traditional Chinese architecture built into such a modern building. It has 8 tiers with 8 floors each (lucky number) that are wider on the top than the bottom. This traditional style represents financial richness and everlasting vitality. It is no coincidence that this is where the Taiwanese stock exchange takes place.

Academic Reflection

Before we visited Taipei 101, I read about it. Reading did not prepare me for the massive damper I saw. There were even diagrams in the reading but I could not imagine a huge swinging ball in the middle of a building - it just seemed so unreal. Even after seeing it with my own eyes, it is hard to comprehend its existence. The technology innovated here is intentionally symbolic of Taiwan's entrance into the global economy at the beginning of the 21st century.

Taipei 101 is luxury. It is an engineering marvel, holds the Taiwanese stock exchange, has an upscale mall with international luxury brands, has a food court, an attaching building, and every other bell and whistle you can imagine. The city of Taipei seems to be the epicenter innovation in Taiwan and is the avenue in which Taiwan is defining itself as a country of progress. Taiwan is putting itself on the map and growing its independence. I assume this is an empowering feeling for many Taiwanese people (though I have not asked), especially because Taiwan has been invaded so many times. Even now, Taiwan's political status remains ambiguous.

The list of 9th tier fighters, dissimilar to the last, are here because I feel there skills are higher than the fighters from the last tier and equally have great peaks. Both being competitors in the UFC during the same era and even considers��a type of rival, with one that I think stands out over the other.

Matt Hughes 

The first fighter on the 9th tier of my top goat list is Matt Huges, a spot well deserved for his legendary status given by people in the scene and long time viewers of the sport for his achievements and championship run that proved for most people that he was the pound for pound fighter of the UFC during his time. But because didn’t grow up in that era I don’t see that goat champion who deserves to be number 1 that other’s might see, I see more a fighter who got greatness but couldn’t stand out on my eyes.

Born October 13, 1973 and raised in Illinois, his greatness was just beginning to flourish when he started wrestling and playing football all throughout high school, ending up as double champion after going undefeated with a record of 131-2-0 in the 145 pound division. He attended colleges in Illinois as he continued wrestling, staying at the top of his division while racking up wins. His wrestling brought him to MMA in 1998, debuting in JKD Challenge and establishing his signature move of slams, later fighting in other areas like Extreme Challenge before finally getting into the UFC coming off outstanding winstreaks and continuing that pattern. In 2001, Matt Hughes became in my opinion the first great welterweight champion and went on to defend his title against fighters in the welterweight division until he lost the belt to BJ Penn, but the loss marked the start to his rise that gave him his goat tier ranking and stardom. He beat an early GSP, Royce Gracie and BJ Penn in their rematch in hard fought battles that defined this highest peak. In the end, his career ended like most others, with losses due to newer fighters, newer times and a handful of injuries.

In my opinion, he deserves this spot because of what he started in the welterweight division, how he went on to be a great champion for his time and how he bested fighters I see as formidable opponent. You shouldn’t base greatness on his lowest, but on what he achieved while he was in it. I see a great fighter who excelled and made moves for his time sure, but only stood out enough to be under the next fighter. So, I place Matt Hughes here not because I like or have an interest in him, but respect what he has done.

BJ Penn 

The reason why Matt Hughes is not at the top of the 9th tier of my goat list and the physical manifestation of his ancient Hawaiian warrior ancestors, B.J Penn is a hall of famer in the UFC and a legend to the sport. In my opinion, what puts him in this tier is his sheer relentlessness and his lack of fear in the octagon which brought him to claim great feats in his time fighting in MMA, something I find to be so cool and inspires me to do better.

He began his career at the age of 17 when his neighbor introduced and trained him in brazilian jiu-jitsu before going on to train further at the Ralph Gracie BBJ academy because of the lack of quality and renown gyms. In 2000, B.J Penn became the first non-brazilian to win the black belt division world jiu-jitsu championship and prior, got his legitimate black belt in just a little over three years; thought to be the fastest. He stepped into the octagon, steadily climbing up the ranks before his title shot and first of three fights against a 35-3 Matt Hughes himself who was the clear favorite, in which he won and claimed the belt. Afterwards when he went into K-1, he fought against a heavyweight Lyoto Machidam, something that I think makes him seem crazy or fearless, or maybe both. In his last great stretch he fought a prime GSP and Matt Hughes, not winning but showing how persistent he can be, then dropping down to his natural weight class of lightweight where he claimed and defended the belt 3 times, Not to mention his third fight with Matt Hughes where he won their trilogy. So overall I think, with a record of 16 wins, 14 losses and 2 draws, (a record who may look average) his carrer was something special because he kept fighting for 10 years despite defeat and because of his highest moments he was able to reach. I think what I most like about BJ is that you can see a great fighter even though he lost so much more then other fighters in this list, he still proved himself and he came to terms with that, something I hope I can find in my future.
