I'm so unbelievably susceptible to the famous secret relationship trope it's unreal actually
#like. is this my way of getting my rpf fix or something without actually engaging in rpf?#actual miracle that I'm not a g*ylor if we're being honest. bc I just saw someone advertising their book that's coming out in a few months#on tiktok. and it's undeniably a g*ylor book the author is undeniably a g*ylor there's a high chance it won't be good bc I saw it on tiktok#AND YET. ANYWAY. I WAS LIKE âOOH SOUNDS INTERESTINGâ OK. GET HELP!!!#that's why g*ylors are like that actually bc g*ylor conspiracy theories make great stories#it's just that they think it's cool to treat real people like fictional stories#anyway. other examples of me having issues. um. I rush to band aus youtuber aus reality tv aus actor aus etc in fanfic#uh. most well known example of published books obviously rwrb. I also loved the seven husbands of evelyn hugo#I've read two (2)!! different boy band secret relationship books. so.#my favorite part is always the fake social media I'm filled with glee imagining the in universe rpf fandom losing their mind#there's nothing a bitch loves more than a fake twitter thread or tumblr post#I do this even with works that don't focus on the celebrity aspect like I read aftg and technically they're well known college athletes#so even though the hypothetical in universe sports fandom isn't a huge part of it I'm still reading it like I KNOW TWITTER IS ON FIRE RN!!!

So this poll from @pollsnatural asked if Supernatural was the most toxic fandom people have been in, and the vast majority of folks said no, so now - based on some fandoms in the replies of that post - I'm curious...
Runners up from the linked poll include Teen Wolf, MCU, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Once Upon a Time, sports RPF, Minecraft YouTube, Dragon Age, Mo Dao Zu Shi, One Direction, a bunch of others, and a few abbreviations I'm not familiar with lmao.
I'm guessing "other" will win this poll - tell me which in the tags! I'm curious if there's any Really Big One I should have included (probably MCU...it was hard to juggle "size/popularity of fandom" with "relative toxicity" like if a fandom is huge it's usually just more toxic in general cause there are the same number of weirdos per capita but way more people overall, ya know?)
anyway. yes. poll. do the thing.
#polls#fandom polls#my top three in no particular order are voltron harry potter and mdzs#supernatural is probably fourth tho#like it's up there but i've also just been in a lot of fandoms#and harry potter is hard to top for toxic when jkr herself is right the fuck there being a bitch on wheels#not gonna tag the fandoms on this one lmao#people can find it organically via reblogs or not at all

FTH 2024 Unlisted Fandom Challenge!
All right, there was a peek at the leaderboard in yesterday's numbers post. Today we're giving you the whole thing. The list below contains all 84 write-in fandoms. The majority of them have only one offer âso far. One more signup for them will jump them onto the leaderboard. Two more signups will put them in a tie for second place. Any fandom that gets an additional 4 signups will challenge for the lead ...
And we've had fandoms in years past that went from not on the list at all, to nearly the top of the leaderboard in the time between numbers updates. Will that be your fandom this year?
Signups are OPEN!
One quick request - when writing in your fandoms, please avoid using the ' | ' character. It gives google sheets (and your mods) a headache.
And now, on to the numbers! At not quite 48 hours of signups, this is the complete list of write-in fandoms -

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thanks to @cha-melodius, @kiwiana-writes, @anincompletelist, @orchidscript, @myheartalivewrites,
⌠aaaaand @firenati0n for the tags! (This five tags per line thing really is for the fucking birds, yâall.)
How many works do you have on AO3?
106 works and counting.
Whatâs your total AO3 word count?
461,281 đą
What fandom(s) do you write for?
Currently? Red, White & Royal Blue, and RWRB RPF.
Historically? Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series, Queer as Folk, Supernatural, That One Fandom With The Wizards and the Bigoted Creator, Smallville, Glee, and a handful of other RPF fandoms.
What are your top five fics by kudos?
Even though, IMO, kudos are a poor metric of the quality of a ficâŚ
Whatâs Symbiotic will Always Be | RWRB | Alex/Henry | E | 2.6k words â my Kinktober 2023 breeding kink fic.
Be Worthy Love, and Love Will Come | RWRB | Alex/Henry | E | 30.8k words â my epic childhood friends to lovers AU.
Wrap Me Up, Unfold Me | RWRB | Alex/Henry | E | 4.3k words â my mile high club smut inspired by one of Hannâs incredible art pieces.
Take it Down Low / Make Me Get High | RWRB | Alex/Henry | E | 2k words â my Kinktober 2023 rimming fic, which has been described as that rimming fic.
Iâd Wanna Be Held By You, Felled By You | RWRB | Alex/Henry | E | 2.3k words â my lake house smut inspired by Henry sharing Alexâs clothes.
More under the jump to save you a scroll!
Do you respond to comments?
Yes! Iâm horrendously behind, but I promise Iâll catch up one of these days⌠I hope.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Weâre just gonna focus on my RWRB works here so I donât have to dig too far. I donât really do truly angsty endings in this fandom, but I did write one piece with an open-ended ending:
Back, Bring it Back | RWRB | Alex/Henry | T | 1.2k words
Whatâs the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Itâs a toss-up between two of them, so have them both!
Single Sad-Sack Seeking Same | RWRB | Alex/Henry | E | 7.7k words, and
Count to Ten & Breathe Real Deep | RWRB | Alex/Henry | E | 8.1k words
Do you get hate on fics?
I have had an anon throw a tomato emoji at one of my fics, which still stuns me. I used to get significantly more hate when I was writing in more problematic fandoms⌠đ
but if you want to read the fic where Alex bottoms for the first time, and I got this comment, where they not only flung produce but also⌠felt the need to censor the word âtopâ for⌠reasons:
⌠then you should read In the Low Lamp Light, I was Free | RWRB | Alex/Henry | E | 3.1k words, which is my take on what happened with that second condom wrapper in the Paris scene.
Do you write smut?
Oh, fic meme creator, this is the cutest, funniest question.
Do I write smut? Hilarious.
Whatâs your craziest crossover?
Speaking of smut â I donât really write crossovers, but Iâve written a few monsterfucking or monsterfucking-adjacent fics:
If Weâre Caught in a Wave, I Will Carry You Over | RWRB | Alex/Cecaelia!Henry | E | 5.9k words
Just Let the Night Go Down | RWRB | Alex/Henry/Oviposition Toy | E | 2.2k words, aaaaand
All the Ocean was Sleeping | RWRB | Alex/Siren!Henry | E | 6.4k words
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge. Fic (and fandom) are pretty reductive though. For example, I know that thereâs someone writing a King Henry AU for @aroyallybigbangrwrb, and Iâve been working on my own King Henry AU since last September. There will probably be some similarities; canât be helped. Iâm not worried about it though, unless there are wholesale chunks of paragraphs that are somehow magically identical.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I donât believe so, but I have a blanket permission statement on my AO3 account, so if someone wanted to translate my work Iâd be down!
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Eons ago, I used to co-write Kurtofsky fic in the Glee fandom. Pretty sure all of those works have been lost to the ether, as this was before AO3 was absorbing archives as they went kaput. Iâm not completely heartbroken about it.
All time favorite ship?
Darcy/Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice. No, Iâm not kidding.
Whatâs a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have a couple really old WIPs from previous fandoms that I put a lot of work into, and then the ADHD took hold before I could complete them. It would be interesting, at the very least, to revisit these. Maybe retool them into something usable for this fandom, IDK.
What are your writing strengths?
Making people absolutely collapse in a heap of devastation with my angst, as @hgejfmw-hgejhsf, @kiwiana-writes, and @ad-astra13 will attest; smut with âmultiple different positions laid out in such detail you can almost see the gifs used as reference,â according to @bigassbowlingballhead. I also like to think that my spicy trauma makes me pretty funny.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Brevity â given the option, Iâd rather write 5k words than a drabble every time. I also really struggle with saccharine sweetness and fluff for the sake of fluff, despite what yâall keep saying in my comments section; my sweetness is always bittersweet. And kidfic gives me the ick, as the youths would say, even if Iâm the one writing it.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
Yes! Just make it something that I can Google Translate and Iâm good.
Which fandom was the first you wrote in?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, way back in the 1990s. (Yeah. Iâm that old.)
Whatâs your favorite fic youâve written?
So, I have two. My favorite fic overall is my King Henry AU, Facing Tempests. I affectionately refer to this fic as KHIX (King Henry IX) and The Big Giant AU, and itâs my baby. Iâve commissioned some really incredible art from @seanchaidh7 for Facing Tempests that I canât wait to share with yâall when the fic is ready to post.
My favorite published fic is If Weâre Caught in a Wave, I Will Carry You Over, for which I commissioned some absolutely stunning art from @artofobsession which is now embedded in the story on AO3. There are several other fics that come close, but octoHenry is my beloved.
My tag is always open! Because this meme has been out for a couple days, Iâm not gonna cold call anyone, but if youâre reading this, yes you with the clenched shoulders and the mild headache from staring at a screen, then consider yourself tagged!

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @talktonytome â¤ď¸
How many works do you have an AO3? 33
What's your total AO3 word count? 145,077
What fandoms do you write for? 9-1-1 for now. Used to write for Glee and NCIS a lot under another name. Wrote some rpf for a specific youtube pair for a while too, then I started to feel weird about it so I stopped lol
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Husbands, The Problem, Conversations and Coming Out, You Provide Strength, Uncle Eddie
Do you respond to comments? A lot of the time, yes. Sometimes I get insecure about responding though, so I don't.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I guess The Gables, which is part 3 in a 4 part series.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Probably The Ultimate Treasure Hunt
Do you get hate on fics? I have a few times
Do you write smut? Rarely
Do you write crossovers? Wrote a Glee/NCIS crossover once đ haven't done it since
Have you ever had a fic stolen? yes, way back in the day
Have you ever had a fic translated? yes. Spanish a few times, and Russian
Have you ever co-written a fic before? no, I am too controlling, and also unable to give criticism so I would both hate the fact someone was writing parts of the story and also would be unable to say anything negative about it at all.
What's your all time favorite ship? Back in the day, it was Klaine, until that was ruined for me. Loved McAbby when I was younger too. I think BuckTommy holds the most special place in my heart though.
What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Help From My Friends was going to be a series of moments where Buck got help navigating his relationship with Tommy. I got so distracted after the first one that I simply never revisited it again. I plan on changing the summary and having it be a oneshot.
What are your writing strengths? dialogue, I think. I can hear/see "scenes" play out vividly in my head and I think that helps me write dialogue realistically.
What are your writing weaknesses? describing things without dialogue. I get so unbelievably bored writing when there's no dialogue. Also, smut.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I think I've done one little line from Eddie in Tommy and Eddie's Wild Adventure, but that's about all I'll do.
First fandom you wrote for? Oh... oh God. It was Suite Life of Zack and Cody. đŤŁ
Favorite fics you've written? ohhhh, I love No Man Left Behind, You're a Piece of My Soul I Can't Let Go, What It's For, Old Man was a fun one that no one ever really read đ , and of course I have to end with Tommy Begins because it's my baby.
#bucktommy#911#tommy kinard#evan buckley#sorry this got longwinded#i love talking fic#also i didn't tag anyone because that makes me anxious

Oooh, definitely glee for the fandom asks! <3
Always with the hornets' nests with these ones, I see! Though i don't think there's a fandom out there that isn't in some way a hornets' nest once it gets large enough... hm. Alright. I'm just gonna be as honest as i can be about this, and tag accordingly.
Glee:
my favourite female character: augh. argh. ouph. so difficult. so hard. Since I'm working off of half-remembered show and half recently-rewatched show... its a tossup. Mercedes, Santana, Quinn. Probably Mercedes. She did nothing wrong ever in her entire life <3 well okay maybe except that one time she smashed kurt's car windows (but it was a banger song, though). Can't say Santana because of the Biphobia TM and other things like excessive use of bigotry-based insults, and Quinn. Oh god girl. Cheating is not cool! Funnily enough! So I find them really interesting but 'favourite' is hard to say. Mercedes. Mercedes for sure <3
my favourite male character: Blaine sam blaine sam blaine sam yes. I am imitating ripping petals off of flowers and coming to a conclusion based on which is the last name i said. So I guess that means Sam! But really this is a tie.
my favourite book/season/etc: Mannnnn idk. I don't like shows for seasons as-a-whole. Also i could not tell you what happened in any given season if you held a gun to my head. I'm not good at that. The only shows i know 'seasons' of are Buffy and Teen Wolf because i've watched them like 100000000000 times (exaggeration) for various reasons (mostly fanfiction research).
my favourite episode (if its a tv show): I can tell you my LEAST favourite episode (blame it on the alcohol, thank you Kurt king of biphobia! this is a persona foible it's not the worst episode in the show. by far. by far. it's kind of an average one. I'm just angry at it.) BUT er. Favourite? Idk. Genuinely some of the earlier Kurt-centric stuff was really well done (his convo with Burt... <3) and the Quinn giving birth accompanied by bohemian rhapsody was obviously iconic, but if I'll be honest I couldn't name any episodes of this show (other than That One previously stated, anyway). And yeah most of the time they were named after song titles and No i don't remember those song titles either. I'm just so bad at this. My memory is that of a goldfish's being haphazardly bounced around on a sieve.
my favourite cast member: it would be really funny if I said Demi Lovato [she counts!] but the truth is N/A: i don't know these people !!! They are strangers!! (i don't. follow celebrities. at all. I couldn't even name most of them. They're just people doing a job and their lives are irrelevant to me beyond their ability to perform that job well. I do not need to know where they live and what coffee they drink. Stalker shit tbh. I'm kind of a very private person myself, so rpf-adjacent stuff just... creeps me out. I've never watched a single cast interview in my lifetime and I'm not about to start!)
my favourite ship: Difficult to say! Grave and obvious lie. Blam. It's blam. Quintana is a close runner up though Santana really needs to stop dating people who cheat on the regular (I'll accept Quinn has grown enough not to do this by the time a Quintana coupling would be viable - and satisfying in terms of character arcs - narratively speaking).
a character Iâd die defending: Blaine Anderson did something wrong for sure but like Kurt did it first so shrugs. Cancels out. Bad for each other! Case closed!
a character I just canât sympathize with: genuinely don't remember if I had one of those the first time around because I was like 10 and just didn't pay attention if I didn't care, but Terri and her racist self take that 'prize' this time, alongside the obvious predator in the room [original choir teacher. Sandy? I forget his name immediately after hearing it. He doesn't deserve to be remembered]. Also JBI is just.... a yikes character all around. I mean, he's a blatant stereotype for one, in a the people who wrote this person don't like jews kind of way. Unfortunately common stereotype too, for the era, so not only is he that, he's also lazy. Just a one-note pervert who's the butt of various antisemitic 'jokes' you've heard from era-peer shows a million times over, tired and awful and a sour reminder of bigotry that continues to this day. Really regrettable character who's lack of redeeming qualities was probably purposeful. (I know Rachel and tina are also jewish, but this comes up very rarely and mostly only when santana needs to say something kind of fucked up, as is her modus operandi, for 'comic relief'. Tina's jewish-ness wasn't even canon for several seasons, because she didn't have a surname or a family or anything resembling complex character depth for several seasons. The one time I really remember Rachel's religion being important was when she was pressuring Kurt into believing in some kind of god, which??? don't do that. Bad example. Trying to guilt trip a friend into faith sucks. I take back what i said earlier Mercedes did that too. Boo. Girls try again that was a bad showing all around. Though i have no idea why Kurt went the acupuncture route as his 'secular' option but i think that has to do a lot with the writers doing literally no research ever once in their lives (you can tell they don't by the way they write the football segments of the show, which make no sense according to football fans who watch Glee, of which there are numerous because real life isn't like fiction where you can only like music or sports. Most of the kids in my school year were doing the most of everything ever if they were the 'popular' ones - we do that differently; popularity isn't really based on who know know; for some bizzare reason literally everyone knew who I was? Even people I'd never spoken to?? - but more about like... how much you can do, I guess. Overachievers, but I'm not saying that negatively; these people were generally - generally - very nice, and surprisingly chill for people who had no spare time whatsoever. I'm not entirely sure when they slept; A* across the board, at least one sport, at least one instrument, several extracurriculars, parties every weekend, dozens of friends and an s.o. . Eh? Way too much going on. Scary lifestyle! Impressive burnout rate, probably. Er. Tangent! Back to the scheduled programming).) There's uhhhh there's a lot of bad characters on the show, but i'd say Sandy and Terri and her equally but more loudly racist sister are truly completely irredeemable ones. Like they're not interesting or anything, they're just there to be narrative annoyances (which, in the case of Sandy specifically, is insane. Arrest that man!!! He has actively sexually assaulted minors!!!).
a character I grew to love: difficult to say because I tend to just make an opinion and stick to it. Also i don't remember who i liked at first and who i didn't, this show came out when i was eight. I didn't watch it until I was a little older than that, of course, but I frankly have spotty memory until my late teens, so! I'm not sure!! Quinn, probably. Pink-hair-era Quinn helped me understand her more, and seeing the moments of kindness hidden behind practical cruelty, when you understand her family and situation, makes things make a lot more sense. It takes a lot to get me to sympathise with a cheater, but I can see where Quinn was getting all turned around in her head about life because of her upbringing and socialisation, not to mention the profoundly negative impact cheerios had on her mentally and that the school's culture in general was not exactly a breeding ground for empathy and optimism.
my anti otp: can you tell (klaine). I don't dislike Kurt!!! Please let him have a fun chillaxed boyfriend in new york with his vogue friends. But also please stop attempting to control other people's diets thank you!! Thank you!! I'm of mixed feelings. Blaine and Kurt both did at least one bad, relationship-ending thing, and proved over and over again that they just weren't on the same wavelength in regards to life goals and ways of living it. They can't even share the same living space, which is kind of required for a functional marriage. I don't know, it just seems like they settled for their first proper, serious boyfriend even if that's not really the best match, and I... wish they'd just got to see more of life first, you know? They got married at like 20! Or something! I'm 23, I cannot imagine getting married at 20. That's a baby. Let them live first!
(same for Santana and Brittney, imo. I also don't really like them together because Santana and Brittney have very different ideas regarding monogamy, which is just never going to go down well in the long run. If your girl cheats on you like twenty times and tells you to your face its not cheating in her view of things, but you think it is, break up with her because you'll just make each other miserable. Brittney sort of seems incapable of feeling guilt but if she were, this kind of moral pressure would be Not Good, and obviously Santana isn't comfortable with the idea and doesn't have to be!! Just move on!!! Find other people!!!! Don't marry your first girlfriend if you've broken up like ten times this is simple!!!! Please!!!! But Klaine wins out over Brittana because - in my opinion, glee fandom please do not persecute me, I am known for this specific thing - I see... interactions that verge on abusive between Klaine that I don't see in Brittana. So. Oof? Ex; use of public perception to disguise attack; deliberately hurting Blaine in a stage-combat fencing match (you are not meant to make actual contact in these) and thus using Blaine's own dislike of making his difficulties common knowledge against him in order to 'punish' him. This is no good! Don't do this!!.[Also just to err vaguepost about a comment.... that is. not. what i would call passive aggressive. Physically attacking someone with a sword - no matter the type of sword, fencing foils hurt just as much, they're just not stab-you sharp... er, these days - is just straight-up aggressive.]).
Note that negative things stick in the mind better than positive ones; on a rewatch I may well alter my opinion!
But also I'm really, really stubborn. So it's not likely. Klaine.
#how the fuck do i tag this#glee#glee shite#ask game#anti-klaine#anti-brittana#anti-kurt#though it isn't because i do like him genuinely one of the better characters. he just... doesn't treat blaine great because they're#fundamentally incompatible romantically. and that's fine! but taking this out on each other isn't.#augh. i hate talking about controversial shit a;lksfja;slkf i used to get So Scared of anon hate mobs you have no idea#if i thought something could get that i simply would never ever not one even dare to think it. let alone say it online in a private forum#(dms with my friends) or god forbid a public post#so. this is growth!#you could say i just got a really weird form of catholic guilt about dissenting from public opinion when i was like 14. you'd also probably#be correct! As I was catholic. And all. Not very devout mind you (did not. go to church.) but still#anyways.#... there's so much i could say about brittany as a character but i'd have to rewatch to make sure i was being accurate about her.#so much that isn't exactly glowing commendation. to be clear.#augh. this show gives me so many very very mean thoughts about it. because it does things so very meanly most of the time#it handles beaste well. Coach Beaste is great. 11/10 character#but so much other stuff it gets just so wrong. just so wrong#(also i never finished the show. actually like genuinely i just missed a whole portion of it. so if they fuck up Beaste at some point I hav#not seen I'll be really really mad.)#(I found out about some of the later events-second hand. i don't 100% know how the brittana marriage goes down but i just... don't like it#as a concept. like at all. they're too young and too unstable for that shit.)#(basically; towards the end i was still watching the show on tv. so i missed whole swathes of episodes thanks to how tv works. do not miss#that headache!)#augh. i should shut up now and go to bed. midnight.)#<3 thanks for the ask! Hope i didn't say anything you disagree with too strongly...

It was astounding how someone so young could have their life ripped away so suddenly and yet no one seemed to know how. In fact if Austin hadn't been so frustrated by the whole thing he probably would have found it sad. After collecting what evidence they could from the apartment they had done a sweep of the building, knocking on doors and asking its residents if they had seen anything that may help their investigation. All they had got in return was the same sentiments; Tony was a nice but quiet guy who kept to himself and never caused any trouble. And each and every one of them had given the same answer verbatim that on the night Tony was killed, which the coroner had established to be the thirtieth, they had not seen or heard anything.Â
Now this may have been true because the coroner had said that whilst he couldn't be sure the definite time but he guessed sometime in the early morning which could explain why no one saw anything but from the amount of curtain twitching that went on around this town he wasnât sure how anyone could possibly have missed a gunshot. But if people had heard it and were choosing to ignore a crime of this magnitude it only supported the theory running around the precinct.
He had thought John had been exaggerating when it came to the âMemphis Mafiaâ. Of course he knew that most cities had their mob problems but Memphis wasnât exactly repping the levels of New York or Chicago. Which was probably why he wasnât aware of the undercurrent that ran through downtown Memphis hidden behind the façade of music clubs and suave bars. Whilst John had told him about the reputation of Kings Bar and others under the same management his other colleagues had elaborated informing him with a certain amount of glee that this case was unsolvable especially if this had anything to do with the boss, Elvis Presley.
It had been a name Austin had vaguely recalled; a rising star some fifteen years previous who had burned out shortly after joining the draft. Unfortunately his fellow detectives had relished in getting him up to speed. Apparently after leaving the army the singer had found himself at a loss, his allure now dwindled in favour of the music of the swinging sixties. So unable to gain any traction in the mainstream heâd turned his sights on Memphis, buying up a run-down bar and turning into an arena for the music scene of the city. His own name was enough to draw people in and it had quite the reputation on the strip for being a good night out. Yet as business had boomed his notoriety had gained a different sort of traction and his good reputation had become debatable. It didnât help that he had an egregious partner running half the show, a toad of a man called the Colonel whose own criminal past was just as questionable, or that he chose to staff his establishment with a gang of his cronies. Soon enough theyâd gained a name and rap sheets to match with offences like racketeering, intimidation and bribery topping the list. There was also the rumour going around the office that their newest venture was using their many clubs to fence narcotics but the drug squad had yet to have any traction with that notion.
Not that it mattered. As Elvis Presley had gained notoriety he had also gained powerful friends. He knew people local government, the celebrities of Memphis and most importantly members of their fine establishment.
âYou might as well give up now,â Robert Johnson, a fellow homicide detective had said as heâd appeared at the side of his desk where Austin had been pouring over his files. He didnât particularly like Robert, even though he was the only one in the department remotely close to his age, because he had this air of smugness about him Austin didnât gel with. And as he continued to speak Austin could see it glinting there behind his brown eyes.
âWhat?â Austin asked irritably.
âThis case,â he said, sitting on the piles of photos on the desk.
âAnd why is that?â Austin challenged.
âBecause itâs unsolvable. Ainât no one gonna speak out now they know itâs one of the Kings guys,â he snorted. Austin had to clench his jaw, the vein in his neck throbbing in irritation.
âA man has been murdered,â he reasoned.
âYeah and if it has anything to do with his work friends bet your life no one saw or knew nothing. They run a tight ship you know. Theyâve flown under the radar for worse,â Robert said.
âWell maybe itâs time they did get caught for something,â Austin said, pulling his files from under the manâs backside with a grunt. Robert rolled his eyes, âand whoâs going to prosecute them? The chief of police who gave Presley an honorary badge last year? Or the mayor who held a ceremony in his honour due to contributions to the city namely a fat stack of cash.â
âTheyâre not the only people who run Memphis,â Austin countered.
âNo, Presley and Parker do a pretty good job of that too,â Robert said.
That was why he was sitting outside the bar yet again. Heâd already been there once hoping that the patrons or workers would have some information on what had happened to Tony last Thursday given he had been working that night. But just like it had been with his neighbours it was a fruitless endeavour. His workmates had told him nothing was out of the ordinary that night and Tony had left on time after his shift. They hadnât even felt under pressure when heâd enquired about him not showing up for work, suspicion weighing heavily in his tone, instead they simply cited that theyâd assumed he had left town something that wasnât out of the ordinary in their line of work, their service jobs apparently resembling that of a revolving door. So he didnât know what he was hoping for now and as he climbed out of his Ford Mustang shutting the squeaky door he sighed. Kings was an old brick building on an intersecting corner of Beale Street. The outside of it was pretty plain, the blacked-out windows revealing nothing to the passersby but inside was a different story.
Every inch of the place was swathed in dark colours with leathers, silk and dark woods being the favoured choices for decoration. He supposed he could see the appeal should one want to frequent the infamous Beale street. It didnât look too impressive now but at night, when the sunlight didnât stream in through the windows and the lights were kept low he could imagine it had an aura to it only enhanced by the low chatter of patrons and the swirling of cigar smoke in the air. Of course at noon that aura wasnât present and it kind of felt disjointed with the fluorescents, the daylight odd and jarring but it still had a presence to it. A notoriety.
Maybe that just stemmed from the way people took note of him the second he walked through the door, curious glances following him as he walked towards the bar looking around to see if he recognised anyone. There were a couple of older men in a booth in the back and a young guy standing at the far end of the bar. From what he could tell the guy seemed to be the bartender, hinted at by the dish cloth strewn over his shoulder, but he didnât initiate anything. Even when Austin offered a small smile he didnât respond, his eyes merely narrowing with suspicion. Unfortunately he wasnât spared from the scrutiny as a man came out from a back door at that very moment taking him in roughly. He was quite tall, not much older than Austin if he had to guess, though he looked more weathered, his ruddy skin and receding red hair not lending itself the youthful air Austin still had in his thirties.Â
Still scrutiny or not Austin put his best foot forward, offering the man an easy-going smile as he said, âhello.â
âCan I help you?â the man replied gruffly. Austin supposed he shouldâve been thankful he wanted to get the chase but that meant he wouldnât be able to angle the conversation as he wanted.
âUh yeah actually,â Austin said straightening up, âI uh I stopped by the other day I had a couple more questions. I was just wondering if anyone else would be free to talk to me.â
âQuestions about?â the man asked impatiently.
âTony Bowen,â Austin said, âyour employee.â
âOh him,â the man said, his eyes flitting around the bar. They landed on a woman who was sitting at the other end of the bar but before Austin could follow his gaze he snapped his attention back and said, âyouâre the detective right.â
âYeah, Detective Butler,â he said, moving his jacket out of the way of the badge on his hip so that it flashed for a second, glinting under the harsh lights as he asked, âand you are?âÂ
âRed West,â the man replied, âlook, we already told you what we know.â
âI know I was just wondering if anyone else could share anything. I thought having a couple of days to think might help jog a few memories,â Austin said simply.
âMemories like what?â Red asked.
âWell Tony worked here nearly eighteen months all told and no one seems to know much about him,â Austin started, easing into his suspicions gently.
âHe kept to himself,â Red replied and Austin had to fight to keep his face neutral even though he was wondering if that was the official company slogan at this point.
âReally?â he pressed gently, âbecause it kinda seems like a tight knit group here. Hard to imagine him not being friends with someone.â
âAre you friends with everyone you work with?â he countered. Austin offered him a tight smile but said nothing, hoping his silence would be enough to bleed something out of this stone of a man, âlook he was some kid from the sticks of Florida who came here lookinâ for a job. We gave him one.â
âAnd what was his job?â Austin asked. When heâd first asked heâd been told Tony was a busboy or waiter, but before that heâd been questioning regular patrons whoâd stated theyâd hardly ever seen the boy working out front. He was always coming and going, âpart of the entourageâ one had told him though he wasnât sure what that call for.
âWorked the bar,â Red replied.
âAnd what does that entail?â Austin asked.
âWhatever he was needed to do,â Red replied, his soft jaw clenching in indignation as Austin eyed him dubiously, a scrutiny he was no doubt unaccustomed to these days even if he did relent to elaborate, âhaulinâ crates and bussinâ tables.â
âAnd he always worked inside the bar?â Austin asked, already knowing that couldnât be true.
âThatâs his job idnât it,â the man replied tersely, âlook he came. He went. He didnât cause any trouble. What else do you want me to say?â
âHe obviously caused someone some trouble,â Austin countered.
âYeah well it ainât nuthinâ to do with us at Kings so take your lil questions elsewhere,â Red replied. Austin watched as he came towards him, flipping the bar flap over until it crashed unceremoniously in front of the detective before he pushed past him and out into the high sun.
Austin could feel eyes on him now though it was mostly patrons, the bartender having disappeared into the back at some point in their conversation. He half wondered if he had gone to get someone to remove him, back up should Austin cause any trouble. Yet as he sighed and turned to leave he heard a small voice say, âexcuse me.â
When he turned it was the woman heâd not managed to get a proper look at. She was sitting on a stool at the end of the bar, her legs crossed elegantly over one another as though she was waiting rather than sitting there to be served. She was pretty, extremely so, soft pale skin complimenting rich chocolate coloured hair and dazzling blue eyes. In fact she looked like the epitome of a club patron even at this early hour, a short black dress ghosting along her thighs offset by the outlandishly large fur she was wearing. Given that it was knocking on eighty degrees he almost felt the urge to laugh but then it occurred to him that in here it was quite chilly something he hadnât noticed it before.
âCan I help you?â Austin asked, realising heâd been staring far too long and she was now watching him unsurely.
âSorry to pry but I couldnât help overhear,â she said apologetically, âI just wondered who you were talking about?â
âUh, Tony Bowen,â Austin replied, figuring it couldnât hurt to cast his net any further seeing as his current capture was barren.
âWhat about him?â she asked quietly.
âHe was murdered Thursday night,â Austin replied, watching a flicker of sadness come across her face though like everyone else in this place he recovered well offering little more than a, âoh thatâs just awful.â
âDid you know him?â Austin asked.
âWhat?â the woman shifted nervously and then shrugged, âoh no, I donât think so but itâs just such a tragedy isnât it.â
âYeah one Iâm not getting far with admittedly,â Austin said, earning a sad smile.
âWell I hope you manage to find something,â she said, slipping from her stool and standing up, smoothing out her fur coat as she grabbed her petite purse from the countertop.
âThanks uh,â Austin said realising he hadn't even gotten her name yet but she didnât return it, already hurriedly swinging her bag onto her shoulder and moving around the bar as she murmured, âwould you excuse me.â
Austin watched as she disappeared into the back room. He was inclined to wait for her but when the bartender returned, a scowl on his face he got the impression heâd long outstayed his welcome and headed back out to his car.
But when he got there he didnât feel like going back to the precinct. Everyone knew where heâd been granted because most of them had told him not to bother, even John who despite being partnered with him on this case seemed to be happy to let the trail run cold in light of the overlap with the dubbed âMemphis Mafiaâ. Austin knew he was probably being foolhardy. That he was stirring a pot he probably shouldnât get involved with but he wasnât just going to stand by and bury his head in the sand just because it was risky. Just because of who Tony had been involved with did that not mean he deserved justice? Did his grandma, a woman who had sobbed down the phone to him for half an hour upon receiving the grim news, not deserve to know what happened to her grandson? Did the âmafiaâ just get a pass because it was too much of an effort to try and get involved? No.
So, with that in mind he decided to do another sweep of Tonyâs apartment. Sure, eye witnesses were getting him nowhere but that didnât mean there wasnât still other evidence to find. After all, even in an absence of evidence Tonyâs home had shared a story. Maybe there was more to it to be found.
The apartment was just as barren as heâd left it though admittedly the smell had improved somewhat. The blood stain had long since dried but he wasnât sure if it was that or the absence of a body that made it seem smaller somehow. In fact with just him in here now without the foot traffic from the sheriff's office it felt bigger now, lonelier. Just like his apartment did when he sloped in after a gruelling shift, the sound of the TV still not enough to shut out the thoughts whirring around in his brain.
He wondered if Tony had felt lonely in here. The lack of any art or personality on the wall made it feel like it was possible. Then again the absence of people in his life, or at least the absence of those willing to admit to knowing him, made it feel that way too. How could his grandmother be the only one who seemed to know or at least speak to him. How could no one pin down what role he had played in a company for nigh on a year and a half. It begged belief.
Austin moved around the room rifling through drawers but finding nothing out of the ordinary. There was nothing in his medicine cabinet of note, merely a few band aids and a bottle of aspirin which heâd expect to find in any young personâs apartment. His mail, which John had so painstakingly gone through, didnât hint at any trouble such as aggrieved parties or owed debts. In fact the only thing that took Austinâs interest was the handful of condoms in his nightstand though Tony was young and working at a club so that didnât exactly scream concrete lead if anything it probably hinted at more than one lead entering Tonyâs life for a very short-term basis.
Eventually he turned his attention to the bookcase. There wasnât much on it but it was where most of Tonyâs personal possessions lived. There was a stack of records next to a player which Austin thumbed through finding the boy to be a fan of Sinatra and Dean Martin. There was a shelf full of books, mostly sci-fi novels though they looked in good condition, the spines not even cracked which gave him the impression they were a gift heâd no intention of starting to go through or he was too busy to get around to it, which posed the question of what he was doing instead of reading. Trinkets cluttered the rest of the gaps. Old baseball trophies, a clock, a plant. Nothing out of the ordinary just like the photo frame that was nestled on a top shelf. It wasnât very big but it was visible from where Austin had perched himself on the arm of the chair so he stood and picked it up looking at the photo encapsulated inside the silver frame. It was of an older woman and a young boy and it looked as though whoever had taken the picture had caught the pair off guard as the woman was sitting in a lawn chair with the boy standing between her legs, nestled into her as if theyâd been hugging before heâd had to turn his torso towards the camera. He looked as though heâd been crying, his eyes red and puffy, but his smile was present. Behind him the woman was beaming a smile, her hand on the boy's hip as if to reassure him she was still there.
Tony and his grandmother, Austin reckoned as he smiled. It was nice to put a face to the name, nicer still to think of her like this instead of the sobbing wreck she had been when theyâd interacted. And above all it was nice to know this young guy actually had someone in his life who cared for him.Â
With a sigh Austin moved to put it back but as he did he felt something flutter past his fingers on the back of the frame. As he placed it on the shelf he noted a piece of paper had fallen to the ground in front of him onto the beige carpet. He bent down and picked it up, turning it to face him.
It was another photo, well a photo strip, and each individual picture showed Tony and a woman. Except this one was not a photo of grandmotherly affection. Each picture showed the pair nestled up in a photobooth, laughing and joking until they were entangled in one another, lips locked for the camera to snap away at. Austin felt excitement run through him at the thought of a lead. Who was she and more importantly where did she fit in with Tonyâs life.
The woman with him was young with shoulder length brown hair and a sleek figure clad in a chic satin dress. In one frame she had her eyes closed and her cherry red lips pressed to Tonyâs cheek. No one had mentioned a girlfriend before. Of course Tony had been in town eighteen months and this girl couldâve been anything; merely one date or an old girlfriend back in Gainesville. That might explain why it was tucked behind a photo frame, hidden from view but still accessible may the longing to spark a memory come.
Still without a name or hint at who she was, it didn't really help Austin. Though as he stared at the picture he couldnât help but feel like he did know her. Then again how many women did he see day to day. If he could just place where heâd seen her maybe thatâd help. Then all of a sudden it clicked and he slipped the photo into his back pocket, the picture of the woman on Tonyâs lap and a sitting elegantly on barstool merging into one.
âDidnât know him my ass,â Austin whispered.

20 fanfic questions
tagged by @randomfoggytiger, @wexleresque and @maybe-its-beyond-words. Thank you!
How many works do you have on ao3?
393
2. What's your total ao3 word count?
731,163
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently only The X-Files. I have also written Fics for Friends, ER, Gilmore Girls, O.C., McLeodâs Daughters, Glee, Big Bang Theory, Frasier, Wings, Once Upon a Time, Who's the Boss?, and Hot in Cleveland.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Prompts & Drabbles
Fictober 2020
Love is Not Blind
Family Reunion
Some Things You Just Can't Fake
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I always plan to and then I get overwhelmed. I think I responded to the comments on my first Fictober entry and then I just... stopped. I never know how long it is considered socially acceptable to thank someone. Like does it have to be a day? A week? I never know. What if I thank someone a week later and the person is like, who even is this?
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I truly don't know. I once wrote a major Character Death fic but considering the character was old, I'm not sure if angst applies.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All of them đ
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I think I might have gotten hate on fics before but I don't remember. Pretty sure I've gotten hate for writing RPF.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I have written a few story with mild smut but it's not my favorite genre - to write or read.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
The only crossover I remember writing was Frasier/Hot in Cleveland. That's very niche, not sure if that can be considered crazy.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I recall. I have had people write sequels to my stories so that they could change things and make them how they wanted them. Which also isn't much fun.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have translated one of my own fics, haha.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
I have! I was lucky enough to be asked to contribute to Eden.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Mulder and Scully, no doubt
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Years ago, I started this fic called The Skiing AU. I think it was during Fictober. Also The Five Minutes series which I love so much that I'm worried any new chapter can't live up to the existing parts.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, probably
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Everything that isn't dialogue. I can't set an atmosphere or write description in any shape or form. It doesn't help that I'm not a native speaker either.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I have written some dialogue in German for fic. It feels weird but why not?
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Never posted online, but Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Though I think maybe the first fic I ever wrote was for The Lion King. Had no idea it was fanfiction, haha.
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
I think Coming Home.
Tagging @atths--twice @scullysexual and everyone who wants to!

i don't post a ton of personal stuff on here but i also kinda always just feel like everyone that follows me has known me forever. but in case you've followed me in the last month or two
hi, i'm mandy. i'm 38. i have a real adult job that's mildly soul crushing in that i'm overworked and underpaid just like every millennial.
i like when people are nice but not fake-nice just like, genuine nice. to quote wil wheaton of old, just don't be a dick. or at least don't be a dick on a regular basis. everyone has off days, after all. but be a general all around decent person who doesn't set out to make anyone's life or fandom experience worse, and we're good.
i enjoy when people wanna have conversations with me about common interests. i like to write fic. i have written approximately four million fics in the past 25 years. i like when people like my writing but you don't have to like my writing. fic and my fic isn't for everyone.
i was in glee fandom and i am in dan and phil's fandom and before that i was in stargate/farscape and before that i was in lord of the rings rpf, those are my Big fandoms. i also like star trek and old game shows and 90s sitcoms and horror and i hate watch some youtube family vloggers and fundie families. my hidden talent is that i can name all of the duggar kids and grandkids.
i have two cats and i also foster. my current foster is a wild child i call liza may. she is obsessed with people and hates other animals so placing her permanently has been difficult. i have a girlfriend that i am kinda crazy about. i think the only reason we haven't uhauled it already is because we live in different countries. (for now. there's a plan in place.)
anyway. hi! if you have questions just hit me up. my askbox is open.

fic writer 20 questions - ask game
Thank you @bitbybitwrites for letting me self indulge more.
i still have issues with tagging, but -- @wowbright or @redheadgleek or @coffeegleek wanna try - go for it!
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
Right now - 59. But there are some I think I'm going to take down, mostly the MCU related WIPs I started and have no intention of finishing.
2. whats your ao3 word count?
899,883
3. what fandoms do you write for?
Right now - only Glee. But I started with The Office, and have written MCU related things, too.
4. top 5 fics by kudos
1. 99 Perspectives on a Single Love Story 417 2. The Accident 336 3. Chasing Pavements 312 4. Faking It 303 5. How I Met My Soul Mate - A Drunken Kurt Story 275
5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
I do! But I get so behind. I'm finally caught up again, but I'll go months without responding (and I always feel bad). I feel like - if you've taken the time to write, I should take the time and thank you for acknowledging my work.
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't really have any that have angsty endings - I'm not big on that. I do have bittersweet and sad endings, though -- such as Things We Say in the Shadows, Scenes from December, and The End of the Story
7. whats the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Ooh, I don't know - maybe Chasing Pavements?
8. do you get hate on fics?
Not really. I think I had one comment once that said they thought I needed more editing. (which, fair) and one that didn't like how I did vampires in Things We Say in the Shadows -- but since I know nothing about Vampire lore - I wasn't too worried about it.
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
Clearly, I do. But here's the thing about smut. I feel like - when you start writing, it can be like this scary thing, and then the more you do it, the more almost... routine it starts becoming? It's been an interesting journey...
10. do you write crossovers? whats the craziest one youve ever written?
Not really? Only when it's kind of done in a cracky way. I wrote Scam School as a joke, which is a Glee/MCU crossover. And Blurring Lines is a RPF crack fic about Kurt and Blaine's reaction to Darren and Mia getting engaged.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
God, I hope not. Please let me know if someone has!
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! I had someone ask if they could translate my works into German! So they are!
13. have you ever cowritten a fic before?
I have! @ckerouac and I wrote a silly MCU fic about fake dating and @darriness and I wrote a cute one-shot together.
14. fave all time ship?
Hmmm, I don't know! I'm still having fun writing Klaine. I will always have a special place in my heart for Jim and Pam - and sometimes think about writing more of them. And there are lots out there that I enjoy - but I wouldn't necessarily write fic about.
15. wip you want to finish but doubt you will?
Idk about doubt completely, but I'd love to finish writing The CrossRhodes Saga -- it's a 40s noir mystery, and it's so fun.
16. what are your writing strengths?
Probably conversation -- also, the ability to weave in canon elements. Plus, I think I'm funny - I don't know if other people think I am though.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
Details and descriptions. Also transitions. And probably mechanical things like where to use a comma. Plus, my inability to just proofread and clean it up before posting.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?
Make sure you know what you're doing? Or have someone proofread it? Idk - I've never done it.
19. first fandom you wrote for?
I mean, if you want to get technical, it'd be The Mighty Ducks when I was ten... but the first thing anyone read was for The Office.
20. fave fic youve written?
It's really a toss up between With Every Broken Bone -- which, was really a fic written for me and how to reconcile between seasons 5 and 6. I still will go back and reread that one. The month of June still manages to be one of my favorite things I've ever written. And 99 Perspectives on a Single Love Story which may have been a long, tedious journey to write, but it ended up being just exactly what I wanted it to be. I also have hopes for my current project: Head Over Feet but we'll have to see how that works out when I finish it.
