Tangled au
Ok, so:
I was listening to https://youtu.be/LHvnel95Gno?si=uHeJ1hJOJXrJZ6rh this song
youtube
And it got me thinking about an au where after returning to Gothel and thinking that Eugene betrayed her, she doesn’t figure out her heritage and due to gothel doing something differently, she ends up being taken away to a new tower/prison (I’m thinking on terapi island for now but that could change) and that’s where she sings this song,
This post may be long so I’ll put the rest of my thoughts under the cut:
Eugene:
Sconce I need a reason for Eugene to not have found rapunzel again, and I like the concept of blind!eugene. I’m gonna say that gothel found and blinded Eugene before he could get to rapunzel.
Next up Cass:
In this au she would still find the black rocks, but instead of showing them to rapunzel she would do reasearch on her own, in order to help her dad and show him how strong she is.
After a while she ends up going to the “wizard of old corona” (varian) for help, for the next few weeks they work together, Until the blizzard hits.
Varian:
Varian dad still gets incased, but instead of going to rapunzel he attempts to solve the problem on his own, before eventually Cass comes to check on him, and they stumble into the ruins of rapunzel’s tower, where they find a certain blind ex thief.
Season 2:
After varian is finished fanboying and Eugene explains what happened to his eyes, they form an (begrudgingly on Cass’s part) alliance to find the princess and stop the rocks!
Adira then explains the importance of finding the sun drop and becomes the groups guide along the rocks from the shadows.
I don’t know how the rest of season two would go, but I DO know that once they make it to terapi island they meet rapunzel again and she joins their journey. However, the magic used to blind Eugene won’t let her fully heal him, meaning that now, while he can see the vague outlines of shapes and, sense movement, he can’t fully see.
I don’t yet know how the rest would go cause I’m a little stuck on season three and the dark kingdom, but please tell me if you have any ideas :D

I saw someone on reddit say both Cassandra and Varian were queer coded. I know Cassandra was queer coded by some animators and others who worked on the show, but was actually Varian queer coded the same way Cass was? Maybe the redditor was mistaken? Maybe there are some showrunners who believe the trans Varian headcanon, or maybe the redditor was referring to the non canon Varian Hugo thing.
I can only assume they were referring to Hugo. As far as I know, Varian wasn't specifically queer-coded on the show by any significant number of people (not in the way that several board artists banded together to code Cassandra as queer through the art). Also, many interpret him fanboying over Flynn Rider as him having a crush on him, but I don't believe that was intended to be coded as a crush, just a fanboy thing.

Thoughts on Moana/Vaiana 2 and how it compares to Tangled the Series
Sooo...I've watched "Moana/Vaiana 2" recently and it's been on my mind a lot lately. Maybe because I hadn't watched a movie on the big screen in years, or because I kept listening to "Get lost" a little more than I dare admit, but well. I've had thoughts and since Tumblr is basically fandom haven, I want to know what you think about it.
So here's a comment I wrote on Youtube (on a video review of the sequel to Moana/Vaiana) earlier today:
I had a great time, the movie is visually GORGEOUS, loooved the bat lady's song (best song of the movie imho), but something felt…off? Especially because the side-characters felt at the same time underdeveloped, but also a little, I don't want to say copied, because that sounds too negative, but TOO familiar? As in, I felt like I had seen similar archetypes somewhere else but done better/more developed. And then it hit me: some of the characters in Moana 2 reminded me of the supporting cast in Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure. The quirky inventor type (Varian ♥/Loto), the grumpy old person (Old Lady Crowley/Kele), the mysterious "is she a villain or good guy?" (Adira/Matangi), just to name a few examples. So when I found out that Moana 2 was originally meant to be a TV show it all somehow immediately made sense to me. Again, not a bad movie, but not one without its flaws, either.
HONESTLY! Ever since I read about Moana/Vaiana 2 originally being meant to be a Disney+ series, I can't stop finding parts where the two are similar - which isn't a bad thing, don't get me wrong. I'm an avid fangirl of Tangled the Series and find it a darn shame that only few people actually know it. The show greately expanded Rapunzel's lore, dealt beautifully with very mature themes like trauma and how it affects people (like how being confined in that tower for all her life left its traces on Rapunzel's mental health and having to return to the ruins of her former "home" caused her to panic. Or how even after being reunited, her father still had this crippling anxiety about losing his daughter and he held on too tight, for fear of losing Raps anew) AND it did a great job of expanding the world. Not only by shedding more light on the existing main characters, but also adding fascinating new cast members like Cassandra and Varian (who both easily became my favorite parts of the show. I came for more Rapunzel and stayed for Cass). So YES, like I said, it's great that Moana/Vaiana 2 let us return to the characters we already adored from the first movie and introduced new ones, albeit with familiar traits. I mean heck, even Moni partially reminded me of Varian - the way Moni fanboys over Maui gave me amusing flashbacks to how sweet Varian reacted when he first met Eugene "Flynn Ryder". And both men respectively were equally freaked out by their fans *laughs*.
Long story short, what do you think? Do you also see these comparisons? And were there more parts I haven't mentioned that struck you as similar?

Just watched Moana 2.
Did not watch on theaters though, nuh-uh. I do not want to waste money on what is basically a “tv series-turned-feature film” where the artists are definitely underpaid and time crunched to get this film ready for a short amount of time. Besides, it was already doing well financially anyways (which is sad).
That being said though, from what I’ve seen, it was an alright movie. Definitely didn’t hit as hard as the first movie, but from what it tried to do it was alright and I kinda had a nice time watching it. It helps that I didn’t have high expectations for it because of the mid to bad reviews it has been getting, so I liked what I liked and felt meh on what I felt were meh.
Gotta say though, one big thing I noticed is that they really honed in and incorporated more stuff about Polynesian culture in this film, especially at the beginning and at the ending of the film, and it’s probably the thing that I liked the most from this movie. It was nice to see how very community based their culture is, the way the people of Motunui welcomed Moana when she arrived during “We’re Back” and bid farewell to her when she and her crew finally went on with their journey, just the part where the used their own canoes to send them off was so wholesome. And that’s the beginning part, the ending was definitely cool too because we get to see the other wayfinders and tribes. Do makes me wish that, if this was a series, it could have been an “island-hopping adventure” where they visit the other islands as the series went on until they find the final island, but oh well.
Regarding the new characters, I definitely think they’re the ones who suffered the most out of the change from series to movie. On their own they’re just fine, but certain developments would have hit harder if the movie was a tv series instead. Moana’s crew were kinda… useless in the first parts of the movie? Then some stuff happened and there was a certain scene where one of them almost died and it’s supposed to be a dark moment for the whole crew, but it just… I just feel like it would have hit harder if this was a series where we see more of them, see them interact with each other, to the point where we, the audience, would have felt more endeared of them and the whole crew’s dynamic, then *that* happened. The angst that could have been if thats where an episode ended and then we have to wait for another week to see them get together again as a crew. But nooo after a pep talk between Maui and Moana (“Can I Get a Chee Hoo” was definitely… a song), it all went good off screen. OFF SCREEN. I just feel like the crew could have been a really good addition to the “found family trope” had we see more of their wholesome side interactions and dynamics. They could have been more developed and have more depth as characters too!!! Like- there were certain scenes where certain characters achieved something in their own character arcs, like when the grumpy farmer guy actually swam to save Maui, the inventor girl (who was definitely not neurotypical) finally made an innovation that actually improved the canoe… those were cool developments for their characters, but I just wished we could have seen them more as they grow as characters so we can actually feel and celebrate their achievements better. Basically, they were all endearing characters (to me at least, the fanboy historian was the one I liked the most actually lol), but they are held back for the fact that they’re in a 1 hour and 30 minutes film. Just imagine if they’re in a tv series like Tangled did, I wonder who of the new characters would get the same acclaim as Varian and Cassandra did (man I need to watch the Tangled series).
Lol, almost forgot about Matangi, the bat “villain” lady. Yeah there’s quotation marks in “villain”. Spoilers, she really isn’t, but technically she’s still on the bad side. I have the same opinions of her like with the rest of Moana’s human crew, but I feel like we’re going to see more of her soon anyways. Cuz the Mouse is definitely planning for more Moana in the future. Can’t say if its going to be a movie or a series, but if Moana 2 is Moana: The Series Season 1, then the Moana 3 will most likely feel like a Moana: The Series Season 2.
Anyways, at least Schraffillias is back, yippie!
Please go watch Wicked if you still can, please.

Do you want to talk about Apple Farmer Varian?
He's hot, he's strong, and I actually feature him in "Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure (Remake)"! Apple Farmer Varian is 19, which is what Varian originally was before he was aged down to avoid him being competition for Eugene, which is also when he had the apple farmer job because, well, he was an adult. Not that that stopped the shippers, haha. In my fic, though, he's only got eyes for Cassandra. Well, and Flynn Rider, but that's an infatuation that doesn't go beyond fanboying. Anyways, he's hot.

Pre-Series! Have you ever heard of this really smart guy called Demanitus?
Pre-Series Varian
[Varian stops in his tracks and lights up.]
Heard of him?! I-I’ve lived him! I love his work!
[Varian takes out one of his history books and turns to a page about Demanitus.]
He-he’s the best engineer and alchemist in history!
*nervously*
And he may have inspired me to take up alchemy myself, heh...
*starry eyed*
It would have been amazing to meet him, heh.

Eugene and Varian are reminiscing how the first meeting went:
Eugene: “You know, looking back on how you were practically bouncing all over the place when you thought I was the actual Flynn Rider was funny.”
Varian: “Hey!”
Eugene: “ It is! As much as I thought you were trying to hurt my wife, it’s cute you thought I was the character from the books!”
Varian blushing: “Stop it.”
Eugene imitating Varian’s voice: “ Hey! Your Flynn Rider! I’m your biggest faaannn!”
He laughs: “ You even have a collection!”
Varian covering his face: “ Stop it! I was fourteen and native at that time! And my inner fanboy was coming out of me! Leave me alone!”
Eugene: “ Don’t be embarrassed, Varian. I’m a fan of the books too which is why I took the name.”
Varian: “ I wish I’d listened to you when you told me your name is Eugene.”
Eugene: “ You were so excited. Which is understandable. I’d be too if I met my hero.”
Varian: “Sorry you thought I was trying to hurt Rapunzel. Probably a bad first impression.”
Eugene: “You did gave me quite a scare, kid. Not wanting to see her strapped to a table with a deadly saw wheel. But now knowing you were just helping her with her hair, no hard feelings.”
Varian : “ At first, I couldn’t bring my village hot water because I was reckless and now I’d improved and brought hot water to not just my village, but to everyone in the kingdom!”
Eugene: “ That’s right, Varian. You came a long way. We’re all very proud of you.”
Varian smiles at him: “Thank you.”
Eugene smirking: “ Team Awesome is the most ridiculous name I ever heard.”
Varian: “ I knoooowww. I don’t know why that came to me.”
Eugene: “At the time it was, but….I’ve grown to like it.”
Varian: “ …..Me too.”
