a lot changes from the first scene to the last. for starts, bro is sober now. his first appearance, he was a bumbling failed artist and a complete drunk. a fool, essentially. a womanizer, purposeless, and drowning in debt. bro's only skillset was his witty sharp tongue, his ability to flirt, and his sketching abilities + a knickknack for inventing things. he isn't a failed artist in the sense of being bad at art. he's failed in the sense of soilaila's unreal standards when it comes to artisians from that family. they expect you to have the hands of the gods themselves capable of crafting life from your touch. bro was not that. so he took a societal L

long story short: bro got stabbed 47 times and it injured quite a few organs and magical networks, which messed up quite a bit of his health and magical abilities. so evan's purpose in f'dryx's story is to help him revive his ability to perform stable magic and to heal all the injuries he sustained.

f'dryx very much has a...alrighty im not even gonna sugarcoat it. bro has such a miserable ending LMAO.

(1) why can't f'dryx be happy?

but that's the point. i promise yall--i don't always write tragedies. just most of the time. that being said, there's no definitive claim that f'dryx CAN'T have a happy ending. it just doesn't happen onscreen. there is still room for an off-screen happy ending, and that's all thanks to the person he meets at the end who tells him he might be miserable now, but he isn't completely hopeless.

in that sense, i very much like f'dryx's ending

that being said, the second part of this question is more interesting.

(2) what is the source of his pain?

his own desire to survive. at his core, f'dryx is a survivalist. he will fight tooth and nail to survive. that's why he boarded the vessel. why he built the raft in the lusty waters. why he did EVERYTHING he did on the island. and why he kept putting on the earring.

at the end of the day, f'dryx's survival skills are so strong, they doomed him.

see... when f'dryx was ON the vessel and a part of the crew, he very much adopted telgin's honour code, which was heavily inspired by water-dragon's etiquette and a mix of arcanic + mensus principles. i've delved into it previously in this post.

that being said, f'dryx's loyalty severely takes a hit when the crew he was loyal to threw him overboard. drop an L in chat for this fool LMAO

needless to say, f'dryx very much becomes an "every man for himself" kinda guy, ESPECIALLY post-AV arc. the only time he acts outside of his own survival is when he meets the underwater civilization (except that samaritanism bites him back SO HARD) and when it comes to qatya, because he truly cares about qatya in a non-selfish way. yern... yern is complicated lmao.

f’dryx and boor:

estiana is the dragon’s name, and it’s boor’s dragon. boor is one of the main character pov’s of coe. the reason why he was dragging estiana was because she got critically injured while fighting off telgin’s pirate crew and trying to defend boor’s girlfriend—sabre (another main pov character). sanre gets abducted by the crew (aka fdryx’s ex-pirate crew), and estiana is left for dead until f’dryx finds her and saves her life by dragging her towards evan’s healing palace. it’s why boor and f’dryx become friends, and why estiana agrees to take them on their quest to find telgin’s ship. for f’dryx, he’s looking to save yern and qatya off the vessel, and for boor, she’s trying to get sanre back.
