Experiencing Flashes In Your Vision? These Might Be Symptoms of Retinal Detachment.
Occasional threads, flecks, or dark spots drifting across your vision are not usually a cause of concern. However, sudden or excessive eye floaters, light flashes, and darkening side vision require medical attention. These might be the symptoms of retinal detachment, a painless but severe eye condition affecting your retina that detaches from the tissues that support it. The retina is the layer of tissue at the back of your eye that senses light and sends signals to your brain to view things. When it pulls away from the supporting tissues, the blood vessels that carry nutrients and oxygen to your retina are severely damaged.
People suffering from retinal detachment experience a negative effect on their vision. Therefore, they require immediate medical treatment, as untreated cases may lead to blindness. Let's learn more about the risk factors of retinal detachment, its signs, treatment, and more.
How do I know if I'm experiencing retinal detachment?
Symptoms of retinal detachment can occur abruptly and include:
Photopsia (Seeing flashes of light)
Seeing excessive floaters like flecks, threads, lines, and dark spots (happens due to clumping of the vitreous gel inside your eye)
Darkening of your side (peripheral) vision
Blurred vision
Darkening or a shadow covering a part of your normal vision
What are the risk factors associated with retinal detachment?
There are certain risk factors for retinal detachment, including:
Aging
Severe eye injury
Having a family history of retinal detachment
High myopia (severe nearsightedness)
Previous cataract surgery
History of retinal tears
Certain eye disorders like posterior vitreous detachment or diabetes-related retinopathy
Can retinal detachment lead to permanent vision loss?
Retinal detachment is a serious medical condition that requires immediate attention. Damage to the retina usually requires surgical intervention since, if left untreated, it can negatively impact your vision or even lead to permanent vision loss. It is essential to get regular eye checkups to assess your retina. If you have an increased risk or are suffering from retinal detachment, you should get checkups more frequently. Checkups will help your eye specialist properly assess and treat retinal detachment.
Will retinal detachment heal on its own?
A retinal detachment may heal without intervention. However, it cannot repair and reattach itself. Treatment for retinal detachment includes:
Pneumatic Retinopexy
This option is effective for small and easy-to-close tears.
Your doctor will inject a small gas bubble into the eye, which presses against the retina, closing the tear.
A laser or cryopexy device will be used to seal the tear.
Your body will absorb the fluid that is collected under your retina.
The retina will be able to stick to your eye the way that it should.
Scleral Buckle
Your eye specialist will sew a silicon band (buckle) around the sclera (white part of your eye).
The band is invisible and permanently reattaches the retina.
Vitrectomy
This surgical procedure is the most preferred choice, with an 80-90% success rate, and helps repair large and severe retinal tears or detachments.
Your doctor will remove the vitreous gel and replace it with a gas bubble or oil, pushing the retina back into place.
If you notice any sudden vision change or symptoms of retinal detachment, visit your eye specialist immediately. Delaying treatment for retinal detachment may lead to permanent vision loss.

Are there any alternative therapies that may help with retinal detachment?
Laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy are the two alternative therapies for retinal detachment. Both are minimally invasive procedures that can be used alone or in conjunction with surgery for complete treatment.
Laser Photocoagulation
A beam of light is emitted from the laser machine, which burns the area around the retinal tear or detachment to create a scar.
This scar helps sear the tear or reattach a detached portion of the retina.
Cryotherapy
This procedure uses cold therapy over the tear through a freezing probe.
A scar tissue is formed as the area is frozen, which seals the tear.
Conclusion
Retinal detachment is a severe yet painless medical condition. If you notice any signs of retinal detachment, like a sudden increase in eye floaters, light flashes, or darkening of your vision, get medical care right away. Consult your eye specialist, who may recommend some kind of eye surgery or minimally invasive non-surgical procedure to fix a detached retina. Delaying getting treatment can significantly damage your retina, leading to permanent vision loss.
FAQs
How often should you have an eye exam? You are advised to get an eye checkup every once in two years. However, you may need checkups more frequently if you have a higher risk of eye diseases.
Which is the best treatment for retinal detachment?Laser photocoagulation is considered the best treatment for retinal detachment since it is minimally invasive and safe, with a high success rate.

What is Cataract and Treatment Options for Clearer Vision
Cataracts are one of the most common eye conditions, affecting millions worldwide. Characterized by the clouding of the eye's natural lens, they can significantly impair vision, leading to blurred images, difficulty seeing at night, and an overall decline in the quality of life. Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective treatments available. This blog will explore what cataracts are, how cataract surgery is performed, and the various treatment options available.
What Are Cataracts?
A cataract develops when proteins in the eye’s lens begin to clump together, causing the lens to become cloudy. This cloudiness prevents light from passing through clearly, leading to vision problems. Cataracts typically develop slowly over time and are most common in older adults, though they can affect younger people in some cases.
Tumblr media
Common symptoms of cataracts include:
Blurry or cloudy vision
Sensitivity to light
Difficulty seeing at night
Faded colors
Double vision in one eye
Cataracts can form in one or both eyes, but they don’t spread from one eye to the other.
What Causes Cataracts?
Several factors contribute to the development of cataracts, such as:
Age: Most cataracts are related to aging, with the condition commonly affecting individuals over 60.
Genetics: A family history of cataracts can increase the likelihood of developing the condition.
Medical Conditions: Diabetes and other health problems can increase the risk of cataracts.
Injury: Trauma to the eye can sometimes lead to cataracts.
Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and long-term exposure to UV rays are additional risk factors.
Cataract Surgery: A Proven Treatment
When cataracts interfere with your daily activities, surgery is the only effective treatment. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed and safest surgeries worldwide.
During the procedure, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The IOL becomes a permanent part of the eye, restoring clear vision. The surgery typically takes about 20-30 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Recovery is usually quick, with most people noticing significant improvement in their vision within a few days.
Tumblr media
Types of Cataract Surgery:
Phacoemulsification: This is the most common type of cataract surgery. A small incision is made in the eye, and an ultrasound probe is used to break up the cloudy lens, which is then suctioned out. The IOL is then inserted.
Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE): In some cases, where the cataract is too dense for phacoemulsification, a larger incision is made to remove the lens in one piece. The IOL is then placed.
Laser-assisted Cataract Surgery: This is a more advanced technique that uses lasers to make precise incisions and soften the cataract for removal. The use of laser technology offers more precision and can reduce recovery time.
Treatment Options for Cataracts
While cataract surgery is the only way to fully treat cataracts, other measures can help manage symptoms in the early stages of the condition.
Eyeglasses or Contact Lenses: In the early stages, prescription glasses or contacts can improve vision and delay the need for surgery.
Lifestyle Modifications: Using brighter lights for reading, wearing sunglasses to reduce glare, and limiting night driving can help manage symptoms as cataracts develop.
Medications: Although there are no medications that can cure cataracts, eye drops and supplements that contain antioxidants may slow down the progression.
Choosing the Best Eye Care for Cataracts
If you're experiencing any symptoms of cataracts, it's crucial to consult with an experienced ophthalmologist who can guide you through diagnosis and treatment. For those looking for the best eye hospital in Kolkata, selecting a center known for its advanced cataract treatment options and surgical expertise is vital for the best outcomes. Make sure the hospital is equipped with the latest technology and has a team of skilled surgeons to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.
Conclusion
Cataracts, though common, don’t have to limit your vision or lifestyle. With modern cataract surgery and advanced treatment options, restoring clear sight is more accessible than ever. Early diagnosis and consultation with a specialist are key in determining the best course of action. Don't let cataracts hold you back—reach out to an eye care specialist today!
For those in Kolkata, look no further than the best eye hospital in Kolkata for comprehensive cataract care and treatment tailored to your needs.

Recent data reveals an alarming rise in paediatric cataracts, impacting not just vision but also the development of these young minds. But there's a glimmer of hope: advancements in cataract surgery offer a pathway to fix clarity and transform lives. Let's explore the medical miracles to restore the lost colours of our young future.
Synopsis
 Understanding Cataracts in Children
 Identifying Paediatric Cataracts
Diagnostic Tests and Imaging Techniques to Identify Cataracts in Children
Surgical Procedures - Paediatric Cataract Surgery
Understanding Cataracts in Children
Cataracts are typically associated with ageing, and can also affect children. These cloudy formations within the eye's lens hinder vision. While cataracts in children are relatively rare, affecting around 3 out of every 10,000 kids, their impact is profound. It not only disrupts vision but also impedes vital developmental milestones. Effectiveness in treating paediatric cataracts largely depends on early diagnosis and tailored interventions. Various types of paediatric cataracts exist, often classified based on their location within the lens or the underlying cause. Congenital cataracts, occurring at birth, and developmental cataracts that manifest in early childhood, are among the common types.
Identifying Paediatric Cataracts
Detecting paediatric cataracts demands a keen eye for subtle signs. Parents should remain vigilant for indications like crossed eyes, rapid eye movements, or an unusual clouding in the eye's pupil. Diagnostic tests, from basic eye exams to specialised imaging techniques like ultrasound or MRI, help confirm the diagnosis before the top ophthalmologist in Kolkata suggests a cataract eye surgery. Some of the prominent signs and symptoms are listed below:
Clouded, blurry, or hazy vision
Abnormal eye movements (nystagmus)
Poor depth perception
Light sensitivity
Rubbing or squinting of eyes
Tumblr media
Diagnostic Tests and Imaging Techniques to Identify Cataracts in Children
Accurate diagnosis relies on comprehensive eye examinations, including:
Visual acuity tests
Slit-lamp examinations, and
Dilated eye evaluations
Advanced imaging techniques such as:
Ultrasound
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
The above diagnostic tests and imaging techniques aid in assessing the extent and nature of the cataract.
Surgical Procedures - Paediatric Cataract Surgery
Paediatric cataract surgery is intricate due to the developing eye structures. Specialised techniques like paediatric intraocular lenses (IOLs) and minimally invasive procedures cater to these unique challenges. Advanced surgical approaches, including phacoemulsification and aspiration, enable precise removal of the cataract. Additionally, the implementation of capsular tension rings and iris hooks assists in stabilising the lens capsule and maintaining optimal conditions during the cataract surgery procedure.

PSA TEST
PSA Test
Tumblr media
A protein known as prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is produced by both benign and cancerous prostate gland cells. The PSA test determines the blood level of PSA. A blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis for this test. Typically, the results are expressed as ng/mL (nanograms of PSA per milliliter) of blood.
The PSA test was first approved by the FDA in 1986 to monitor the progression of prostate cancer in men who had already been diagnosed with the disease. People with prostate cancer frequently have an elevated PSA level in their blood. The PSA test was approved by the FDA in 1994 to be used with a digital rectal exam (DRE) to help men over 50 detect prostate cancer. Until about 2008, many medical professionals and professional organizations recommended starting a PSA screening every year at age 50 for prostate cancer.
In order to assist in determining the nature of the issue, health care providers frequently use PSA testing in conjunction with a DRE in patients who report experiencing prostate symptoms.
Why is the PSA Test done?
The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test is used for the following:
Men should be tested for prostate cancer. A prostate biopsy may be performed if your doctor is concerned about signs of prostate cancer because other common medical conditions, such as Prostatitis and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), can raise PSA levels.
Check in the event that malignant growth might be available when results from different tests, like a computerized rectal test, are not ordinary. Although it is not a cancer diagnosis, the PSA test can be used in conjunction with other tests to determine whether cancer is present.
During active surveillance or other treatment, keep an eye on prostate cancer. The cancer may be growing or spreading if PSA levels rise. A man who has had his prostate gland removed usually does not have PSA. A public service announcement level that ascents after prostate evacuation might mean the malignant growth has returned or has spread.
How to prepare for the PSA Test?
Tell your doctor if you have had a bladder cystoscopy in the past few weeks before you have a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test.
In the past few weeks, a prostate needle biopsy of prostate surgery.
During the past few weeks, a digital rectal examination was performed.
A persistent infection of the prostate (prostatitis) or an infection of the urinary tract (UTI)
A catheter or tube that was recently inserted into your bladder to drain urine
Try not to ejaculate for 24 hours before your public service announcement blood test, either during sex or masturbation. If you have any questions about the necessity of the test, its risks, the procedure, or the significance of the results, you should talk to your doctor.

CDE Asia takes a step towards disease awareness with health camp initiatives at Kolkata Headquarters
Tumblr media
21 May 2023
CDE Asia's Health Awareness camp empowers individuals to tackle chronic diseases head-on through prevention and cure, offering valuable insights and resources.
In collaboration with Desun Hospital, CDE Asia took the initiative to organize two health awareness camps on May 11th and May 20th, 2023. These camps were held at CDE Asia's headquarters at Ecospace, Kolkata, and its factory in Howrah. The primary objective of these camps was to raise awareness about chronic health conditions and offer free medical testing with doctor consultations, aiming to empower individuals and enhance their understanding of these ailments.
The camps were organised to equip the employees with knowledge, resources, and medical support to effectively tackle chronic health conditions. The primary objective of these camps was to raise awareness about chronic diseases and highlight the importance of prevention and cure. The event proved to be a dynamic platform for individuals to gain valuable insights and resources, empowering them to take proactive measures in combating these ailments.
According to a recent study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), India holds the unfortunate distinction of having the highest number of people affected by chronic and 'silent killer' diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart ailments.
The prevalence of chronic diseases in India is reaching critical levels, with millions of individuals trapped in the vicious cycle of these ailments. However, what is even more concerning is the lack of awareness among those who have not yet been affected. Many are unaware of the necessary steps to prevent the onset of such diseases, leaving them vulnerable to their debilitating consequences.
The camps had provisions to check vital health parameters such as weight, blood pressure, eye consultations, random blood sugar, and ECG (as advised by doctors), apart from free doctor consultations.
Mr. Anirban Sarkar, Deputy Manager-Growth & Development Officer at Desun Hospital, commended CDE Asia's initiative, stating, "The health awareness and medical testing camps organized by CDE Asia are truly commendable. It provides employees with invaluable access to specialized medical services and testing, enabling them to proactively plan their treatment and take control of their health. Kudos to CDE Asia for prioritizing the well-being of their employees.”
By addressing the root causes and promoting awareness, CDE Asia envisions a future where individuals are well-informed, empowered, and equipped to prevent chronic diseases.

Preventing vision loss from Glaucoma: Check these useful insights
Glaucoma includes different eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, which is important for vision. While high eye pressure is often associated with glaucoma, it's possible for the condition to develop even when eye pressure is normal. This shows that glaucoma is complex, and regular eye exams are necessary to detect and manage it effectively, regardless of eye pressure.
Glaucoma can be categorised into two primary types: open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma.
Open-angle glaucoma is characterised by a gradual and slow progression over time, often without obvious signs of vision loss in the early stages. As the disease advances, individuals may begin to experience a gradual loss of their peripheral or side vision. Regrettably, significant vision loss is usually detected only when the condition has already reached an advanced stage. Regular eye examinations are important for the early detection and effective management of open-angle glaucoma to minimise the risk of severe vision impairment.
On the other hand, angle-closure glaucoma, also referred to as acute or narrow-angle glaucoma, is less prevalent. It develops rapidly and is characterised by distinct and noticeable symptoms, leading to immediate and severe damage to the optic nerve. Given the urgency of this condition, prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent further complications.

Understanding the differences between these two types of glaucoma is important in recognising the symptoms, seeking timely medical intervention, and effectively managing the condition to preserve vision health. Regular eye examinations and consultations with an eye care professional are essential for early detection and appropriate treatment of glaucoma.
Take proactive steps to prevent vision loss caused by glaucoma by implementing the following measures:
High-risk group: If you belong to a high-risk group, schedule a comprehensive dilated eye exam to detect glaucoma early and initiate appropriate treatment. Prescription eye drops can effectively halt the progression of glaucoma. Your eye care specialist will advise you on the frequency of follow-up exams.
Early detection: Even if you are not in a high-risk group, it is recommended to undergo a comprehensive dilated eye exam by the age of 40. This helps identify glaucoma and other eye diseases at an early stage, enabling prompt intervention.
Family history: Since open-angle glaucoma is often hereditary and may not exhibit symptoms, have discussions with your family members about their vision health. By staying informed about their eye conditions, you can take measures to protect your eyes and their vision.
Healthy lifestyle: Maintain a healthy weight, manage your blood pressure, engage in regular physical activity, and avoid smoking. These lifestyle choices not only help prevent vision loss from glaucoma but also reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions.

"To Get Political Dividend": BJP Over Mamata Banerjee's Odisha Visit To Meet Injured In Train Crash
BJP leader said that over 800 derailments had taken place and 1,400 people died when she was the railway minister.
Tumblr media
Kolkata: The BJP on Tuesday alleged that West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Odisha to meet injured people of the Balasore triple train crash was to “get political dividend”.
The saffron camp also claimed that many train mishaps had taken place during Ms Banerjee’s tenure as the railway minister.
The ruling TMC slammed the BJP over such allegations, asserting that the saffron camp was trying to “malign the image of its chairperson to divert attention from the Centre’s all-round failure”.
Claiming that over 500 train mishaps had taken place during the stint of Banerjee in railways, BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh told reporters, “Didi’s (as Banerjee is called in Bengal) visits to Odisha, two days back and on Tuesday, are to get political dividend only.” “We all know that over 800 derailments had taken place and 1,400 people died when she was the railway minister. What prevented her from adopting the anti-collision device? Why didn’t she go for the modernisation drive then?” Mr Ghosh said.
During the day, Ms Banerjee visited injured passengers of the ill-fated Coromandel Express, who are currently undergoing treatment in different hospitals in Cuttack.
She visited the eye and surgery department of SCB Medical College and Hospital and interacted with the patients and assured them of all possible help.
“We think the biggest scam happened in the railways during the tenure of Mamata Banerjee,” Mr Ghosh, the former state BJP president, said.
Accusing the BJP of trying to malign the image of Ms Banerjee to divert attention from the all-around failure of the Centre, TMC spokesperson Santanu Sen said, “Whenever the saffron party finds itself in a spot, it resorts to the blame game.” “The chief minister has been monitoring the situation in Balasore after the triple train accident on June 2 evening. She rushed to the disaster site the next day to be on the side of the people and again today to hospitals in Odisha. This has made the BJP despondent and they are levelling all kinds of charges against her and the TMC,” Mr Sen said.
The Coromandel Express crashed into a stationary goods train, derailing most of its coaches at 7 pm on June 2. In all, 288 people died in the accident and more than 1,200 were injured.
A few coaches of Coromandel toppled over the last few coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah Express which was passing by at the same time.
Investigators are looking into possible human error, signal failure and other possible causes behind the three-train crash.
