ETA: I forgot to add this due to being distracted by accent mechanics, but the asker sent a follow-up that I think is worth noting since as a commentor said, Alastor is Creole specifically:

Okay, so, FASCINATING that you ask me this, hahaha, because I actually have a roommate that was put into speech therapy at around 11 years old because she was facing bullying due to having a UK accent, and she converted pretty fully to speaking with USAmerican accent over the course of 2-3 years.

This ask prompted me to ask her some questions about it, so here are some points she shared:

She does experience revertigo to her UK accent, but it has less to do with feeling strong emotions and more to do with context. It happens more easily if she's had something to drink or is sleepy, but the actual trigger for it is speaking with people or watching media that includes that accent. On rare occasion, if she is thinking deeply about old memories from when she still spoke with a UK accent, that can also cause the code-switch.

She still does vowel and consonant exercises sometimes, especially after a night where she had revertigo (most recently: had a few drinks with her boyfriend and got an Uber driver that was from a neighboring town to where she was born on the way home).

She has moments where she feels like she has to focus on speaking with sharper consonants, and also moments where she feels like the USAmerican accent is effortless. The more she's around people with US accents, the easier it is.

Now, Alastor's case is pretty different in some ways (for one, he likely started putting on the transatlantic accent a few years older than that), but is probably pretty similar in others (I imagine with the accent being so popular for media, there were plenty of known resources for teaching it to yourself, akin to speech therapy). And beyond that, a lot of how the human brain processes language, pronunciation, accents, and code-switching would remain consistent across the two different situations.

So most likely, he does have a chance of reverting back to his "mother" accent, likely when he's had a few drinks and is around folks who speak the same way. Now, whether his control issues would allow that to happen is a different question - he's very dedicated to his image, and I can see him being fully aware of the circumstances in which he's likely to slip, and subsequently either going a little easier on the alcohol or just plain paying extra attention to his enunciation when he speaks.

Since he probably started putting on the transatlantic accent later in life and also is never actually around people who speak it (since it's fake), I imagine he probably still has to regularly do vocal exercises for upkeep!

Hmm...

I don't think I have an all-time-ultimate for this one, because though I enjoy some ships in canon (and non-canon), there are various aspects of them that appeal to me. Some I like purely because of how interesting they are due to character dynamics, and some I think are just wholesome, which are different kinds of appreciations to me. (For the sake of brevity, I'll only be talking about romantic ships, because there's so so many platonic ones that I enjoy.)

But I suppose that:

YamiChar I enjoy because they do have interesting character dynamic to them, if we think about them individually as characters they are, as well as how their backstories come into play. Though Charlotte, as she is seen in canon, seems to be but a blushing mess around Yami, her intended characterization is that of a strong, independent woman, and I see the blushing-mess-iness as an exxageration/or as a visual representation of how she is feeling on the inside (and suppose thus am inclined to think about her as "fanon Charlotte"). But I think that there are so many aspect into this ship, about Charlotte learning that it's not a bad thing to depend onto someone, that one doesn't need to carry every burden alone, that it's okay to love someone, that it's okay to be honest with what you feel. And Yami, might or might not, see beyond that façade, but he respects her for what she can do. He thinks highly of her, because she is strong, and she does stand up for what she believes in. And, in a way, in the way Clover as a society is constructed, they are both "outsiders". Yami is a foreigner, which makes his outsidedness obvious, but Charlotte, as a woman has had to fight for her position harder than an noble man with the same amount of mana would. They both have had to prove themselves, and they could be considered as kindred spirits in that aspect. But they are also wholesome. Because Yami is just a good guy, doing his thing, and she falls in love with that. With Yami, wanting to be good, just for the sake of being good; out of wanting to help. And for Yami, I think he loves Charlotte for her strength, her passion to help those in need, and fending for what she believes in. But I also don't think that in canon, Yami quite yet dares to admit that he loves her, because I don't think he thinks that he deserves her yet. (Actually, I wouldn't be surprised, if we get a almost-love-confession during a battle of the final arch, in which Yami says something like "I said that I have something I need to tell you after this is all over, so I'll surpass my limits here and now (so that I can tell it to you)".

With Astelle, I really do enjoy the self-reflective element of Noelle coming into terms with her feelings. She recognizes, and is able to admit to herself, that she really does have feelings for Asta. And she also sees Asta as the good guy that he is, with a passion for helping people around him, even though Asta could be seen as the least fortunate out of them (because he doesn't have mana; and emphasis on "could be seen"). While Asta sees her for who she is. He sees how she's trying to better herself, and how she isn't afraid to jump into action when she needs to defend someone. Because that's the kind of a person she is deep down. Actually, there are very similar aspects to both of these ships (YamiChar and Astelle), which is probably why I enjoy them.

Moving on to non-canon ships, I think that... my favourite non-canon ships are OC ships (and because they belong to my moots, I'm biased about them, I'll give you that.)

I really love @loosesodamarble 's Nachsele ship, because it's... it's two broken people loving each other, and they're building their relationship through the hardships thrown at them. I think that their story is about strength, devotion, genuine emotion, and choosing to love each through the ups and downs of life.

And though it's been a while since I last talked about it, I'm fond of @lyranova 's YuNeva ship, because, again, there's two people who struggle to express themselves verbally, but because there is that similarity to them, they are able to understand each other. They're able to connect and genuinely understand the other. They're both driven and caring, and they're striving for their own goals while standing by each other.

If we go for a non-canon CCxCC ship, then... I suppose my favourite would be... Well, last year I saw some Julius x Mereo art and I did think that as a crack-ship (so not serious in any way, but entertainable just for the lols) it could be interesting. They both wanted to be out to explore the world, they were both strong and independent. But now because of what the final arch revealed, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Lucius stirs things up, but suppose for enemies-to-lovers -trope enjoyers it could be interesting.

(As an honourable mention Yosuga x Mereo, though it could become a canon one, since it's implied.)

That's the whole point of being human. You don't need to cast yourself in one role. You can explore. But also at some level, its just a fucking job. You just need to pay your bills. Its okay to exxagerate sometimes. As long as you have something to hang by, your silver lining, your one libe answer to why you are here, it okay to do whatever, even if its not the greatest job in the world. And the truth is, plenty of people have to do jobs that don't have any silver lining whatsoever. And your pain doesn't pale just because of that, but like, its just a job. It's fine. You don't have to feel like a fraud for applying at places you didn't think you would apply to. If they select you, you can be proud of faking it well.

Post Writing Thoughts

Woah, that was interesting. I hadn't done any real form of songwriting before, so this was an interesting experience. As you can tell, I'm not a good composer at all, so instead I steal from people I like. It's ok though, since Bob Dylan kind of plagiarized a lot of his earlier work. As for my thoughts on each song, you can interpret them however you want, but I'll talk about each one.

Going to Begin, a parody of Blowin' in the Wind, is meant to talk about some of the struggles I go through. Some of the struggles or stuff here are exxagerated or sometimes even falsified for the sake of songwriting, and Going to Begin is somewhat of an example of that. I chose Going to Begin as the main crux of the song (I don't know songwriting terms) because I wanted to imply that these tribulations will have to be tested.

North Country Land, a parody of Girl from the North Country, is actually about my Aunt who lives in the Adirondacks. I would always go there in the summers, so I have fond memories of her house.

Masters of Hate, a parody of Masters of War, is directly about being Native American. It calls out the people who oppressed us and stole our land. The last bit about politics may be a bit weird, but I wanted to sort of show that I could be better than them.

Down the Lifetime, a parody of Down the Highway, is effectively the same song as the original, but gayer. I decided to write a gay love song despite not being gay because I often see straight love songs as the default, so I decided, fuck it, why not write a gay song? It's effectively the same thing, just with men. Or you could interpret the singer as being a women, thats a possibility. As for changing highway to lifetime, I just wanted to differentiate it enough. You can interpret the change how you like.

End's Blues, a parody of Bob Dylan's Blues, is a song I wanted to write about both my Aromanticism, and my general cool and "not caring" attitude to life. I wanted to write a silly song about how I just live with what I have.

A Strange Life We All a-Live, a parody of A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall, is about Tom Scott. I realized that I had no idea what I could possibly write for the like 50 different lines, so I realized that these were all places, and Tom Scott's probably been there. This song took a pretty long time (well, relatively, it only took like 3 hours) to make, since I had to find videos that would both fit the line's topic, and make it fit to the syllable count. The syllable count would later trip me up in later songs as I had to try harder to figure out what lyrics to choose. I'm not entirely satisfied with the song, but it's whatever I guess.

I wrote the first half of the album in one sitting, before continuing onto the other half later. I'll post about that a bit later, since I don't want this post to get too long.

He fucking adored fairies. They were delightful- devious in a good way but pure enough to tingle his fancy in the way all children of the light did. Oh, Hemlock was created to be a menace to society and they would do anything and everything to live up to that. They enjoyed the darkness and the chaos- tranquillity was wasted on them.

“Together?” Hemlock asked as they sipped from their drink and let their eyes wander over the crowd. It was a busy night and there was probably trouble in there but it was fun and if the other wanted to experience some danger Hemlock was here to give it to him- if he would get something out of it at least but somehow he didn’t think that would be hard with this particular fae. “Oh? Would you give me something too?” was the teasing question as he watched August drink their shot and chuckled at it. Focusing on the tongue and humming a bit.

Dancing. “Sometimes.” they answered truthfully as the hint was taken and he felt the eyes of the vampires and the arachna on them. Silly stupid fairy staring at everyone, Hemlock sighed as he pulled August directly into the crowd and with him- pulling the fairy against their own body as it was so busy there were bodies everywhere but Hemlock made sure to hold one arm around August. Keeping the other close as he rolled his body against the other, making sure August could feel his skinny waist and the way his pants were generously filled. “The arachna you oogled is still staring at you.” he whispered to August as they danced, his lips moving against August’ ear.

“Do you know that they eat fairies- catch them in their gigantic webs and eat them, devour them head to toe. You staring at them must have made them hungry-” he bit the other’s lobe gently as he chuckled. Exxagerating the appetite of Arachna a bit (even if they sometimes did eat fairies). “How does it feel to be prey?”

RWBY: Arowfell and the weird characterization and flanderization of team RWBY

While watching through the gameplay of RWBY: Arowfell i could not shake the thought that our main characters, team RWBY are acting somewhat strange and not at all how i am used to. Now, many critics have stated that we would like for the protagonists return more to their V1-V3 selves. And its almost like this wish was noticed by a monkey paw. We did get to see the return of V1-V3 team RWBY selves, but writen as if they were from RWBY chibi.

In this thread i would like to cover how team RWBY is writen in the game RWBY:Arowfell, and how in my opinion they are not writen well.

Flanderization

Before moving on, let us first cover the term of Flanderization. As the name implies, this is a term that comes from a character in the show Simpsons, a character that goes by the name Ned Flanders. A character that started out as a regular christian, loving father etc, who over time became a parody of an evangelical christian with little else to his character.

Afterwards it has become a commonly used term to describe characters with complexities becoming one-note and changing to basically be centered around a singular quality of theirs. A simmilar albeit weaker effect of this can be seen in RWBY: Arowfell.

I will be fair to the game, not all dialogue is there to flanderize team RWBY, there are a lot of what one could consider to be "regular" conversations, and yet there are times when it seems like the characters of team RWBY do a suddent flip to their flanderized versions with statements/actions that make little sense from them.

Its the same thing as many RWBY fans have noticed with certain fanfictions of RWBY, how characters are suddently changed to be different, more one-note or with qualities that are heavily exxagerated. And people take issues with those portrayals because those characters do not feel the samel. I think this would apply to what is a canonical RWBY story even more.

Besides Blake, this strange flanderization can be seen in all other 3 members of team RWBY which i will cover individually.

The Child

Those who read RWBY fanfictions can probably remember just how many fanfictions they have read in which Ruby  acts less like a socially awkward teenager and more like a 10 year old girl. This usually stems from an oversimplification or even misunderstanding of Ruby as a character in Volumes 1-3. While Ruby does have some childish behaviours, and does carry a level of innocence with her, she is still understanding of the world around her. She is still clever and someone who wants to be a hero.

And yet... In arrowfell...

During the hunt for the Union Boss responsible for Grimm attracting Orbs:

After said Boss activates 4 Grimm attracting Orbs during his capture:

Im sorry... But what? This sounds less like the Ruby i know and more like her chibi counterpart interacting with Cinder and her goons. Not only is this dialogue make Ruby act as if she was 10 year old, this dialogue also happens during what are time sensitive missions.

For example, in the first picture the rest of team RWBY are very much against trying to find the bird of the Mayor of the village, because they have a job to do. Only for Ruby to make that silly declaration and decide for the team.

Which also takes me to another extremelly weird characterization of Ruby:

Ruby being too lazy? To hunt down orbs that have resulted in destruction of villages?

Whatever one might think of Ruby, at the end of the day she is heroic to a fault. It is something that we critics will acknowledge as anyone else. And yet during the mission to hunt down the 4 orbs that have already caused the destruction of villages, during the destruction of each orb Ruby complains about how difficult this job is, how she wants to rest etc.

That while annoying and definitely out of character for her does not even compare to what happens after the destruction of the third orb, after which she seems to want to leave the last orb active due to being lazy? Who is she and what did she do with Ruby?

The Ice Queen

I apologize in advance for using this title for Weiss due to the connontations it might have to some people, but there is no better phrase that i can use to describe how Weiss behaves in Arowfell.

For the most part, Weiss acts as any other member of team RWBY acts during dialogues, its just simple questions and "lets go do x" and the like. But when she engages with Penny and even her sister, her characterization suddently changes:

If i have not watched the original show. Im going to be honest, i would believe that Weiss truly and utterly hates Penny, for seemingly no reason. It seems like the game is trying to mirror the V1 Weiss and Ruby dynamic. But it does so with two completely unrelated characters and has Weiss, someone who has underwent massive character changes act as she did nearly a decade ago. Not only that but the things she says arent just haughty or cold, they are outright hostile.

I would expect this kind of behaviour from a clone trooper in Star Wars the Clone Wars series rather than Weiss. Its almost open distain and hatred, which ignores the character progress of Weiss and just seems out of place. Even her own family is not immune to this:

This is Weiss speaking to Winter. Now, the relationship between Weiss and Winter has always been somewhat weird. Winter is usually a tough sister on Weiss and she expresses her love by wanting Weiss to do better and better, and this is reflected in Winters dialogue in this game. She is not warm to Weiss but also wants to help her improve. Weiss has always seemingly accepted this behaviour from Winter and has constantly exhibited love towards Winter, so for Weiss to act so cold? It just looks like its out of place.

This is the kind of dialogue i would expect between Weiss and Whitley, or Yang and Qrow in a more sarcastic/joking manner. To see Weiss being so... Cold just makes little sense to me. The entire dynamic of their relationship seems changed.

The Ruffian

Unlike Weiss and Ruby, Yang for the most part avoids mischaracterization in various interactions. She seems to act the same way she always does, at least until scenes like these come up:

Once again, these seem like lines that i would see from V1-V3 Yang, or from Chibi Yang. Not Volume 7-8 Yang. After losing her arm Yang has still retained some of her playfulness and cheer, make no mistake. But being callous of destruction they cause, being so ready to beat up suspects? Its just... Thats not her. That hasnt been her for a long time now.

Of course one also has to mention that giving Yang lines about beating up suspects while acting as a police force is.... Its really unfortunate... Just like with Hanlons portrayal, someone had to have noticed these lines. The fact that no problem was found with them is... Its not the best look for RT or for Yang.

Whats more important is that there are scenes where it makes sense for Yang to be ready to fistycuffs. But then there are scenes as shown above where such words are not exactly appropriate to her character.

The game partially feels like its meant for children

I do not think i am out of line by saying that RWBY has been in the Young Adult/Teenager area of media since Volume 3 aired. I am not going to say that no younger demographics are not watching RWBY, but right now it is marketed towards and is made mostly for the more adult crowd.

And while watching the playthrough of RWBY: Arowfell, half of the time it felt like i was watching a childrens game. The dialogue is extremelly simplistic, almost half of the characters that are met are silly in one way or another. Quests are given and worded in extremelly simplistic ways.

Now, maybe in Volume 1-2 that would make more sense, but in Volumes 7-8? Not as much, especially since the game itself also deals with at least somewhat darker topics. There is a large disconnect between the main plot and all of the sidequests, some of which HAVE to be done to progress the main plot.

It also feels like team RWBY, all of them are dumbed down, for example. When team RWBY first encounters a fear orb that attracts Grimm, they take it to show to General Ironwood. They are stopped by Bram who asks them to give the orb to him under the excuse that its "Military equipment". To which they choose to comply with his request despite the fact that GENERAL Ironwood leads the military?

And its not just that, throughout the entire game team RWBY seem to trust literally every person they meet. In V7 they are shown to at least have some level of suspicion around people, even Ironwood. And now in game they trust literally everyone? What is up with that?

It does not end there. In the last part of the game team RWBY encounters a hostile team BRIR, which is all fine and dady. But then team BRIR just go ahead and tell team RWBY who the main bad guys of the game and traitors are. FOR NO REASON. Its not an interogation or anything of the sort. They just openly say who they work for... Which is just..... Why?

Then you have events like this:

This is after team RWBY fight and beat Amoncio Glass. A weapons smuggler that attacks them with a mech-suit... And they just leave him there.... They dont arrest him... They dont wait till Atlas soldiers arrest him.... They just. Let him go...

Conclussion

I understand that RWBY: Arowfell is not a War and Peace novel. I understand that it is not meant to be the height of literature and that most of the game is a sidescrolling fighting game. I do understand that. But that does not mean that the character writing has to be so... So poor.

The games language, the dialogue is way too simplistic. The way team RWBY act range from normal to "Who are you?". And this applies to both individual characterizations of team RWBY, but also the team as a whole. Only Blake seems to avoid this fate, but she is the only one.

I get wanting to make a more lighthearted game. But Volumes 7-8 are an incredibly poor location to choose to make this kind of game in. If this game dropped in Volumes 1-3, i would probably have little problems with how its writen and how characters are handled. But in V7-8? This doesnt make much sense.

MAD!!!!!!! Let me tell u why... all started last week i went out to eat and ordered the passta that would change my life. MUSHROOM TAGLIATELLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! but there iss no other mushroom pasta like thiss one... the most unique flavor feels endless but is actually the perfect size tastes so decadent but isnt really very expensive at all The list really does go on. i couldve ordered it as takeout during the week probably BUT i wanted my mother who hadnt gone to the restauraunt To try this delicious treat becausse i knew sshed love it. so on monday we made plans as a family to go to the resstauraunt today AND I WAS SO EXCITED!!!!!! it got me through the week of apss and studying not exxagerating when i say i thought of her (the tagliatelle) mid seminar ap. And Today was the day.. i jumped up and down multiple timess telling my friends about the tagliatelle i made plans to work out when i got home even though im a whole unit behind my ap world studying not to keep my exercise routine or be healthier But to create more space in my body for maximum enjoyment of the tagliatelle. and today. just now. i saw my mom after school and a few minutes into our converssation brought up the restauraunt and how excited i am. WELL THEN!!!!!!!!!!!! She says oh call your dad hes mad at me and we wont go if hes mad at me. im like WTF Why. turns out its bc of the time she yelled at ME (and also him a little but mostly me) like what two weeks ago. And his retaliation for this is to prevent us from going to the restauraunt THE ONE IIIIIII WANT TO GO TO. so i call him and attempt to resolve it diplomatically like "hey i appreciate it but it happened to me and i dont care about it anymore can we all just move on SSO I CAN EAT MY TAGLIATELLE" And he doesnt fucking budge hes like she needs to apologize to me (EVEN THOUGH IM THE ONE WHO GOT YELLED AT) AND THEN they start arguing over the phone BUT ITSS MY PHONE AND ITS NOT ON SPEAKER SO IM THE ONLY ONE WHOS HEARING THE ARGUMENT. So im like Ok so youre mad about ssomething that happened to ME and are retaliating against it by preventing ME from eating MY tagliatelle and youre conducting an argument about it wiith someone who is NOT ME over MY phone. MY TAGLIATELLE!!!!!!!!!!! and i hung up. And then my mom was like So you only care about your tagliatelle😡 and i was like "Ya!!!" Do not involve me in your fights DO NOT IINVOLVE MY PASTA IN YOUR FIGHTS!!!!!!! Fuck this world genuinely that tagliatelle is to me what blood is to morbius. WHO CARES.
