Yogyakarta: Java’s Cultural Gem and a Family Adventure Awaits
Yogyakarta, or Jogja as the locals warmly call it, is a city where the rhythm of ancient rituals blends seamlessly with the hum of modern life. Nestled in the heart of Java, Yogyakarta is a treasure trove of cultural wonders, where majestic temples, royal palaces, and timeless arts beckon explorers of all ages. For families looking to embark on a journey that transcends time and place, this city offers an enchanting playground filled with history, adventure, and the warmth of Javanese hospitality.
Timeless Temples: Unraveling the Mysteries of Prambanan and Borobudur
A trip to Yogyakarta wouldn’t be complete without visiting its iconic temples—two of Southeast Asia’s most awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Sites:
Prambanan: Rising against the horizon, Prambanan’s towering spires carve out a story of 10th-century Hindu majesty. Its intricate stone reliefs depict ancient legends, drawing families into a realm of gods, warriors, and mystical creatures. Arriving at dawn, as the temple silhouettes against the first light, is a moment of quiet wonder that families will cherish long after they leave.
Borobudur: The world’s largest Buddhist monument, Borobudur is a massive stone mandala that invites contemplation and exploration. Climbing its steep, stone steps at sunrise reveals panoramic views of mist-laden valleys—an unforgettable experience for curious young adventurers and their parents alike. Walking through the temple’s nine platforms, families can trace their hands over centuries-old carvings that tell tales of enlightenment.
Kraton and Taman Sari: Walking in the Sultan’s Footsteps
In the heart of Yogyakarta lies the Kraton, the living palace of the Sultan. More than just an architectural marvel, the Kraton is a cultural hub where traditional Javanese music and dance fill the air. Families can wander through its expansive courtyards, where ceremonial guards stand in stately silence, and exhibits showcase the regal artifacts of a bygone era. The Kraton provides a window into the city’s soul—a place where past and present harmoniously coexist.
Nearby, the Taman Sari Water Castle offers another layer of royal intrigue. This labyrinthine garden complex, once a retreat for the Sultan, features pools, tunnels, and pavilions that spark the imagination of young explorers. With a local guide, families can hear stories passed down through generations, adding depth to their visit and a sense of the magic that still lingers in these ancient stones.
Art and Craft: Jogja’s Heartbeat of Creativity
Yogyakarta pulses with an artistic spirit, a city where creativity flourishes in every corner. As the birthplace of wayang kulit (shadow puppetry) and batik, Yogyakarta invites families to immerse themselves in Java’s rich artistic heritage. In the city’s vibrant workshops, artisans demonstrate the delicate art of batik-making, allowing children and parents alike to try their hand at this age-old craft. Each brushstroke and drop of wax is a lesson in patience and tradition, transforming plain fabric into colorful masterpieces.
For those seeking an immersive experience, staying near Malioboro Street offers a front-row seat to Jogja’s bustling arts scene. Galleries, street performers, and markets create a lively atmosphere that’s perfect for families looking to soak in the city’s creative energy.
Adventures Beyond the City: Yogyakarta’s Natural Wonders
Beyond its cultural treasures, Yogyakarta opens up to landscapes that call for adventure:
Java’s Southern Shores: The beaches of Parangtritis and Indrayanti are ideal for a family day out, where children can run barefoot through the sand and parents can relax by the waves. At Siung Beach, cliffs rise above the coastline, offering rock climbing opportunities for thrill-seekers ready to conquer the heights with a view of the sea.
The Depths of Goa Jomblang: For older children and parents with a taste for the extraordinary, descending into the vertical cave of Goa Jomblang is a heart-pounding experience. Families can rappel into a hidden world, where shafts of sunlight pierce the cave’s roof and illuminate an underground forest—a moment of surreal beauty that feels like stepping into a lost realm.
A Taste of Jogja: Culinary Delights for the Family
Yogyakarta’s culinary scene is a feast for the senses, with flavors that capture the essence of Javanese cuisine:
Gudeg: This sweet, savory dish made from young jackfruit is a Jogja staple, served alongside rice, chicken, and boiled eggs. Malioboro Street is lined with family-friendly eateries where parents and kids can share this traditional dish, savoring the rich, coconut-infused flavors that are unique to the region.
Bakpia: These small, flaky pastries filled with sweet mung bean or chocolate make for the perfect snack between adventures. They’re also a popular souvenir, allowing families to take a piece of Jogja’s sweetness home.
Jamu: For parents interested in local wellness traditions, Jamu—Java’s traditional herbal tonic—is a must-try. Some family-friendly hotels even offer Jamu-making classes, giving visitors a hands-on experience in crafting these ancient remedies.
Staying in Jogja: Family-Friendly Retreats
Choosing the right accommodation can transform a family vacation into a seamless adventure. Yogyakarta offers a range of kid-friendly hotels that cater to every type of traveler:
1. The Jayakarta Hotel & Spa Yogyakarta
Set near the airport, this family-friendly oasis offers a children’s pool, playground, and lush gardens for kids to explore. Parents can unwind at the spa, making it the perfect base for families looking to combine comfort with convenience.
2. Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta
A heritage hotel infused with Javanese elegance, the Royal Ambarrukmo provides a cultural experience for the entire family. With its traditional tea ceremonies and an on-site kids’ club, families can balance cultural immersion with playful activities.
3. Eastparc Hotel Yogyakarta
For families looking for fun-filled stays, Eastparc Hotel delivers. Boasting a water park, playgrounds, and a mini cinema, it’s a paradise for children. Parents can explore the botanical trails or enjoy a massage at the hotel’s spa—ensuring every member of the family is entertained and pampered.
Exploring Yogyakarta: A City on Wheels
Getting around Yogyakarta is an adventure in itself. Families can hop into a becak (pedicab) or take a ride on an andong (horse-drawn carriage), offering a leisurely way to soak in the city’s historic charm. For those seeking a more active exploration, bicycles are available for rent, allowing families to venture into the countryside, discover hidden temples, and cycle through traditional villages at their own pace.
Yogyakarta: A Timeless Journey for Families
Yogyakarta isn’t just a destination; it’s a journey through the heart of Java, where the stories of past and present unfold before your eyes. Whether you’re tracing ancient paths at Borobudur, tasting the flavors of Gudeg, or creating batik masterpieces with your children, every moment in Jogja is a chance to connect, learn, and explore.
Families who visit will find themselves swept up in the city’s timeless charm and warm hospitality, leaving with memories that linger long after the journey ends. Yogyakarta—where every step tells a story, and every turn invites discovery—awaits to share its magic.

Annual Routine #14 -- Extended Version
The good part of marrying your best-friend is sometime you act like real-friend, planning everything like it was the youth, not husband-and-wife. Hehe.
Dan tahun ini berhasil me-managed "What's on 2024: us version" berbekal video reels wkwkw *oh i love my reels explore page!
2 personal goals, 2 professional goals, and 2 couple goals.
Sebenernya pengen juga bikin yg kayak recap 2023 (gweh yang pengen), tp the time didn't do us justiceeee. Keluar mulu tiap hari kalo adit di jogja, udah gitu akhir taun awal taun cuma dapet dikit2 nih off nya karena sibuks :) Tapi gapapa, meskipun kmrn juga buru2 ngobrol nya 30-45 menit di bandara, but im grateful enough this event can happen.
Gonna write it down here (the general things) so next year I won't forget to attached to the 2025 annual routine things *aamiin
2 personal goals (mine 3 hehe): 1) increasing spiritual growth by reading islamic books more also unlearn and relearn my ibadah form. 2) saving seriously and purposefully :) 3) get back into shape by having activities routine: cardio 2-3x a week (walking, running, or swimming), yoga 1-2x a week, strength training 1-2x a week.
2 professional goals: 1) mendapatkan kemantapan jalan karir WKWKWK syulid yah gesss adulthood dan karir dan menjadi istri inihhh :") mohon doanyaa ya geesss. 2) working seriously: arriving early at work (this is hard for me loh, let me berusaha keras in this matter), updating skills and knowledge, connecting with cool and inspirational and kind and membimbing experts.
2 couple goals: 1) get closer emotionally (yes, we're in our 2 years on our marriage but these past 2 years was not as easy as it seems, emotionally. Surprise, surprise~) 2) this is something that we dreamt of these past year... gonna let u know when it happen. Please pray for us ya! Bismillaah...
By having that, idk, rasanya cukup surreal juga bisa ngelakuin kaya gini sama suami HAHA. Sebelumnya selalu sendiri, 1-2 tahun terakhir juga seingetku aku bikin sendiri dan gak aku share sama adit. Mungkin karena beberapa part perlu hard conversation nya ya.. Tapi ternyata, it's liberating for me to let him know whats on my mind, whats on my plan, and whats on my plate. Huhu alhamdulillah banget :")
#marriagetips: get yourself a man who understand you, have a willingness to learn and grow with you, and respect you as an individual too. Karena ternyata, gak semua orang bisa dan mau kayak gitu huhu T.T And vice versa, we need to understand him and have a willingness to learn and grow and also respect him. huhu smgt mantemanku <3
Awkay,
happy new year ! May this year filled with love and blessings, I wish you (and me) have a cool, composure, content, and calm 2024! Aamiin yaa robbal'alamiin.
The real annual routine on January 1st, 2024

Do some of urban human are cursed to be a part of the mess?
It’s 22:41, i sit on my bed trying to articulate my reflection about the question i have received back months and recently, on a south-almost-central condomonium, floor 41, enough to see where fake stars takes all over the place where the real one was hidden by the tight schedule of workers that waiting on the street just to have some rest at their home.
“Which one do you prefer on live, an urban life or a country-side life?”
That questions runs over my mind, messing my perception about what so urban or what so country-side life. All over my life, i was born and raised until 21 on a metropolitan urban scene of life, i have never been in a country-side, as in the desa. When i have to think what is country-side life, i am sure that my mind was dominated by the urban perspective of the country-side, it is somehow not right on my sense, i am scared, not in a sense that i don’t want a life that is country-side ideal, but i wanna re-think, who made those ‘ideal’ about living on a country-side? Is it back to those urban human that is privileged enough to have everything at the country-side as their retirement life until death? Or is it because everything was so cheap on a urban currency to the country-side that makes it ideal to live in such luckier life? Or (...)
When i was in Yogyakarta on February and March, i don’t even feel all those romanticized story on my perspective. I, of course, feel alive when i got the chance to back on nature scenery, fresh air, which i don’t have in Jakarta. Is it because i am that urban human or that kind of romantic-sense are the story from the perspective of the privileged urban human? When i was there, it is hard for me to go anywhere, to explore more about what i don’t know about. I don’t drive, i don’t even have those motorcycle (for myself) here in Jakarta, i walk everywhere, at Jakarta, my commuting habit is helped by Transjakarta, Commuterline, and Jaklingko existence to go somewhere. But it’s different here in Yogyakarta, everywhere i go, i have to rely on my friend if they have some free time, if i have to be on my own, i have to rely those Ojek Online to get me everywhere which mean cost a lot, or if i want to reach Transjogja that helped me a lot, i have to use motorcycle for reaching the stop. My opinion on transportation very much Jakartans, i know. When all of my friends said that in Jogja i able to buy a lot of cheap food and beverage, i have to disagree, because, at the end, the prices very much the same at my home, East Jakarta. When i rethink about the minimum wage here in Jakarta and minimum wage in Yogyakarta, that ‘cheap’ food is actually expensive.
Urban life i live in is busy, i do agree. Jakarta is a place where people dare to gamble their life in order to survive economically. Do they all win the gamble? like the game, of course not. Do they choose to lose? i guess the system was made with some specification about who is deserve some possibillity to win and whose not, where the one who bought ticket a lot more have more possibility to win the game. I lose the game, at least for now and i don’t really know until when. I don’t fit a lot of the qualification or generalisation about urban human of Jakarta. Shopping spree, expensive lunch, cafe hopping, etc, i guess what they really think about urban human of Jakarta, is the privileged one, at least. But, do they know there’s a lot loser on the system? the one who live off the unknown street which is smaller than Gang, that Google Maps don’t even know. Jakarta (exclude the Kepulauan Seribu) itself split into five part that the existed one was that is attractive with it’s pretty cafe, buildings or monuments, malls, attraction, and many other economic-activities. A lot of people heard about Thamrin or Sudirman in Central Jakarta, Senopati or Blok M in South Jakarta, Pantai Indah Kapuk or Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta, Kebon Jeruk or Kota Tua in West Jakarta, hmm... i’m not really sure about East Jakarta, but, i guess Cawang or Rawamangun is the face of East Jakarta (or maybe Cakung later in the future). From the attractive area that a lot of people happen to know is the main road, where a lot of people just pass the road to some location that is economical-attractions (like office, malls, restaurants, cafe, etc). They often forgotting the unattractive side of Jakarta, where a lot of people live their daily life there. Part of Jakarta like Joglo in West Jakarta, Petukangan in South Jakarta, Jatibaru in Central Jakarta, Koja in North Jakarta, and East Jakarta in general.
The one who lose on Jakarta is cursed, as a part of human in urban life of Jakarta, we were stuck to live the expectation, the generalization, and the glamour side of Jakarta, even tough were not. I have a thought that the sub-urban side of Jakarta often play a part as the ‘country-side’ that is not accomodating the generalisation. That’s why, back to the question the friend of mine asked to me, i don’t really know, or maybe i live up both of the life, the half-urban of the generalized urban life, the half-country-side of the outsider of the glamourized of Jakarta.
