Devils Look Like Angels (Ch. 13)
Title: Devils Look Like Angels (Chapter 13) Summary: Fem!Reader x Psychotic!Castiel. An unhinged, criminal, supernatural artifact collector extraordinaire… and the reader caught his eye. It will not take her long to realize that beneath the charm and mystique is a crazed killer who will go to great lengths to woo her. Words: 1,916 Warnings (for the fic in entirety): Stalking, angst, death/murder, violence
Author’s Note: There is one more chapter after this!
Chap 12 || Chap 14 || Masterpost || Fanfic masterpost
The door swung open before you had even had the opportunity to knock. Castiel was standing there beaming, dressed as fashionable as ever.
“Come in,” he told you cheerfully, stepping out of the way to allow you room.
Your foot crossing the threshold sent a shiver through you, feeling as if you were walking into the lion’s den. Sam and Dean were down the street and were ready to come in if this took too long. You told Dean twenty minutes was the cap if you had not texted them yet. Sam had protested to that, believing that was too long to wait. But you told him you may need time to console and that required tact, which in turn required time.
Castiel’s jacket was hanging on the back of one of the dining room chairs.
“Would you like me to hang your coat?”
“No, I’m okay.”
“Hmm, alright,” Castiel responded, eyes narrowing ever so slightly.
You took in the room, noting the expensive looking rug and portraits. You had been surprised when you entered the neighborhood, seeing the grand houses with their turrets and pristine gardens. Running a hand along the wall panel, you thought of how you would have loved to grow up in a house such as this.
“Did you rent this?”
“It is a friend’s,” Castiel responded, coming closer. “May I get you a drink?”
Clearing your throat, you shook your head, meeting his eyes. You could see the scrutiny beginning to sink in and you knew you needed to move quickly. It was like plunging into cold water being faced with him there knowing what you were about to try to do. But it was crucial that you did this to return to your normal life and that is what gave you the courage to do so.
Facing him fully, you told him, “I have something for you.” You reached into your purse and pulled out the neatly wrapped package containing the bone knife.
His lips curled at the sight of the parcel. “Well, now. How the tables have turned. You have never bestowed me with a gift. Have I rubbed off on you?” He gave you a sly look as he untied the bow. “Although, unlike you, I intend to make use of your well thought out gift.”
You elected to stay quiet as he unwrapped the gift.
His eyes widened in surprise, peering into the box. Reaching in, he began to ask, “Is this…”
Flicking his gaze to you, he murmured in awe, “Bone?”
You confirmed stoically, “The bone from Mesopotamia, as a matter of fact. Not all of it of course, but…” you trailed off.
Castiel was still staring down at it, turning it this way and that slowly, drinking in the sight. A wide grin spread, and he moved to speak but you cut in.
“It comes with a price.”
His smile faltered. “I think you misinterpret the meaning of a gift, kitten.”
“Do you not have reasons for giving me gifts? I believe you expect to woo me to your side when you do.”
“Touche… go on.”
Straightening your back, you told him firmly, “Please stop killing people and involving me.”
He let out a bark of a laugh immediately and you bristled at his curt dismissal of your request. His fingers wrapped tighter around the bone knife, still chuckling to himself.
You kept your eyes trained on him as he placed it back in the box and placed it on the table beside him. Gaze flicking back to you, he moved his arms behind his back and closed the space between the two of you. His musk wove around you at the proximity, your mind fleeting thinking of his arm entwined with yours at the music hall and how you had been enticed by the fragrance then. Now, it made your skin crawl because you were terrified of how he was going to react.
“Kitten. Not only do you obviously listen to me when I talk – I am impressed you remembered my frustration with the location of this artifact – but you went out of your way to bring it to me. You contacted me to do so. I am smitten to say the least. Now, how am I to just… leave us be after this?”
Fear tugged at you hearing him declare that he had no intention of leaving you alone. Despite your fear, you knew you had to continue. This had to be done.
Pushing on, you told him unshakably, “Castiel. It is meant to be a parting gift. That is my wish.”
Castiel’s expression was impassive, his eyes running over your face. It was as if he was waiting for you to break out into a laugh and tell him you were only joking. Every nerve in your body was on alert, ready to bolt if you needed to.
Licking his bottom lip, Castiel inhaled and exhaled slowly. “May I ask why?”
“Our relationship is unstable.”
A small laugh left his lips, as he swung his arm out in gesture to the room. “What a coincidence. I have the deed to the house. We can be stable here. You and me.”
You stammered, “What?”
“I acquired it. Through some forceful means, yes, but I have it.”
He was not getting it. You tried again, trying to sound as firm as you could, “Castiel, I got this gift as closure. I—”
“You do not understand,” Castiel cut in and you closed your mouth as he rushed to explain. “This house could be ours. Permanently. The people here lived owed me a lot of money. So, I came to collect, and they did not have it and they had been dragging their feet for far too long. Really, they were unwilling to pay and it was getting tiresome pretending otherwise. So, I made the decision and they are gone.”
Closing your eyes, you sighed, almost too afraid to ask. “Gone?”
“Dead.”
You turned to leave, not wanting to hear another word. Castiel reached out though, grasping your arm tightly, preventing you from leaving. You turned to him startled; he looked desperate.
“You did not complain about that at the last house in Hot Springs.”
“What are you talking about?” you demanded.
Castiel exhaled loudly, “Well, really I never told you about it. But there had been others who had originally rented out the house and well, I wanted it for you, kitten. It truly was the best house on the lake. So, I got rid of them so we could enjoy time together. And we did! We had a wonderful time.”
Flabbergasted, you blubbered, “Y-y-you what?”
“Killed them,” Castiel told you simply. “Weighted them and dropped them in the middle of the lake. We were such nice house guests and the owners were none the wiser it was not the people who had actually paid to be there. And do not worry your pretty little head because I made sure all the security cameras were on loop, so they never saw who was there.”
You had been at a murder scene. You had slept in a bed at a murder scene.
“So, this is not really any different. And we can be happy here, there is no check out time pressing down on us to rush our time together.”
“No,” you said weakly. Shaking your head slowly, you gained the courage to repeat louder. “No. No we can’t.”
“Yes, we can,” Castiel countered, leaning in closer.
“You’re unstable, Castiel. Not just this relationship. It’s you.” He looked stung, his mouth opening and closing in astonishment. You yanked your arm away and said, “I told you it was sick to send me body parts but then somehow you think I’ll be okay with you murdering people so I can have a house? And you want me to live in this house where you murdered someone, and the cops will surely come looking? Are you even listening to yourself?”
“Y/N, you do not know what you are saying.”
“I am sick of playing games. I am sick of being afraid all of the time!”
Stunned, Castiel took a step back, staring at you as if he did not know you. He recovered, his jaw tight as he stepped back towards you and you refused to step away from him, despite the fact your heart was threatening to burst out of your chest.
“You? Afraid? You asked for tonight! I thought it meant something that you asked! I thought it was going to be a turning point for us, a positive one!” Castiel fumbled, pulling a small box of out of his pocket and your eyes widened in shock. A strong urge to throw up was crawling up your throat, the shock overtaking you quickly as he went to one knee, revealing the diamond ring. “I wanted this night to be memorable. I wanted to tell you how I would like to treat you for the rest of your life, cherish you. Truly. We could grow with each other and make each other better versions of ourselves. I would be happy as long as you were by my side and I hoped you would say the same of me. It could just be you and me if that is your wish…”
He stalled, seeing the look on your face. You did not have to say anything for him to know this was not going the way he thought it was going to. And you were realizing in full how foolish it was to think you could get you out of his mind.
Clearing his throat, Castiel stood up, closing the box. He played with the box in his hands, standing stiffly. “You know, most people appreciate diamonds.” He suddenly tossed the ring unceremoniously on the table, sighing loudly. Glaring at you, he sneered, “Granted, you never wear any of the other jewelry I have sent you, so I should not be surprised.”
His whole demeanor was screaming at you to run.
“I’m going to leave,” you told him shakily, tears pricking.
Castiel continued staring at you, face void of any emotion. You heard his phone buzz in his pocket, and he reached in, pulling it out, looking down at the screen.
A loud scoff left his mouth, his gaze snapping back to you. “Well, it seems your ride is ‘hiding’ outside anyway. I am sure the three of you constructed this… atrocious way to completely destroy this wonderful evening.” You opened your mouth to say something, but he snapped, finally showing some type of emotion, “No, do not speak. Just go.”
He did not have to tell you twice. You kept looking over your shoulder, expecting to find him there reaching out to yank you back into the depths of the house and do away with you just like he had done with the owners. The late sun was security as you stepped out of the house, your feet picking up speed, not quite to a run though.
Tears were falling freely now, choked sobs leaving you as the fear engulfed you.
Sam was halfway out of the Impala when he saw the state of you. “What—”
“Get back in,” you cried. “I just – we need to leave.”
You all but collapsed in the back seat of the car, curling up into a small ball, trying to stifle your cries.
The fear was swirling inside, you well aware you had just made this situation far worse.

JOHN’S POV
“John, we will be ready in five.”
“Ok.”
I press the phone once again against my ear, listening to her heavy sigh. It is easy to mold her face into my brain with dexterity. The bushy eyebrows, casting a shadow under piercing blue eyes, seeking to grab my soul, she succeeding to combine it all with a condescending smile on her lips. Condescension which I have to kiss it off.
“Well, if you want to go, then go.”
Deep down, she was still trying, and I can’t take that for granted.
“I don’t want to go. I need to go, an enormous difference. It’s work.”
I aim to be the diplomatic debater, the mediator, and the opponent. She is better than me at being the third party, perfecting the act of passive-aggressiveness in chosen phrases, fuming through her nose on the other side of the line. An act I wish to interpret as a genuine breathed laugh with no second intentions; my five minutes seemed to multiply.
“Call you later?”
I say.
“Yes.”
She answers
“Love you.”
She hanged up.
--------
Y/N POV
“This book is so weird and sexist, holy shit.”
You put the phone down, and Nova throws another eighties romance book into the cardboard box with its copies.
“Language.” You sing at her in a scolding tone.
“Sorry.” She sings back. “But you know I’m right. They are always pairing a young girl with some fifty years old, control freak who prey on them with their big, strong, tan hands.”
You giggle, and she looks satisfied.
Regardless of the narrative that anyone could quickly review, it was ‘in’ right now, as Agnes said, and what her bookclub wanted. “Un plaisir coupable.” she completed; the thin red lines that were her lips stretched in a laugh, causing her blue contacts to squint.
Soon enough, the scavenging for the material began, and you found the yellow pages, delivered with weird smells, phone numbers, and addresses written on the inside of the covers, but still readable.
“They paid and are coming to pick them up tomorrow. It’s the only thing I care about right now. Also, don’t let her catch you saying that you hear me? I will help finish this then we can close before your mom shows up and kill me when she finds out you are here.”
You move from behind the counter, seeing the digital hour hit past ten pm on the laptop.
“Oh, don’t worry about that, she already knows.”
The unconcerned Nova grabs a box, and you grab another following her quick steps, twisting to the right almost at the end of the hall, entering a room that was once a decent private office before it became nonfunctional.
The reserved bookshelf for Agnes club waited empty, a last-minute metal book rack next to the bay window. To create an illusion of a comfortable place for a book club, orange curvy chairs, which Alexis begged to be thrown out, along with the red Arabic carpet left behind with the chairs by the old owner. Every time you enter the space taking a deep, immediate, frustrated breath, Alexis wins a point.
You place the box down, looking at your niece.
“Kyle?”
You ask, and Nova hums softly, doing the stocking job.
Kyle, more than a name it was first a banned topic usually discussed between a limited couple of sentences. His name was a warning, along with his unrequested presence at random, unannounced times. It became harder since Nova wasn’t at a manageable age anymore. It was tough at fifteen, and as the time passes by, sweetness gains the bitterness, and innocence, gone.
“Well, you know you will always have a second bed, Donkey misses you.”
You gain a laugh while she finishes her box.
“Oh God, can’t believe you still keep him there.”
You shrug impulsively, paying attention to your own hands, arranging the books and their horizontal titles on a pile.
“It was your favorite toy, why would I throw it away?”
“You know why.”
A pause and a deep breath came from her, triggering the thought, long forgotten about, that people still expected you to be mourning over material remains.
“It’s okay to throw away with the rest of the others, it’s been a long time.”
Her auburn hair was now being tied in a bun. Your fifteen-year-old niece, holding a peaceful outside appearance, didn’t mind sounding more mature than you wanted to admit.
“Good... then we can donate, not throw it away.”
“Even better.”
She agrees quickly, stomping on the empty cardboard box.
Nova turns out the lights as you awaited for her, leaning against the glass door on the entrance, blowing hot humid air into your cold fingers and watching over nothing other than a middle-aged man with a red beanie walking a Greyhound on the other side of the empty street.
Notting Hill wasn’t known for its nightlife. It was almost a deserted city by eight and in the light of day, Portobelo Rode fruit market brings it to life. On weekdays, stalls and its hay baskets, packed with succulent fruits and greens, filled the streets along with shouted invites, half prices and sweet-soured smells invading each corner; on weekends the baskets shape-shifted to antiques of all kinds, genuine or handmaid, the crowd and the stalls multiplied in the small village.
In-between buyers and sellers of what you could harvest or find in your gramma’s basement there was your store, a bookstore, one corner away from your home, squeezed in the middle of Linda’s cafe and a self-employed yoga instructor that recently rented Mr. Walsh’s house, a retired Navy who moved to Greenwich with his daughter-in-law three weeks ago; his red door house now held a big white plaque with ‘Sivananda Yoga’ written in cursive gold letters, phone number and social media included under the picture of a woman in the lotus posture.
“A yoga studio, nice!” Says Nova, coming closer to the four steps leading up to the red door.
You close the store and covers her shoulders with your arm when the icy wind started building up.
“We could try it someday, your mom-.”
“Hates trying new things.” She completed. “Don’t even bother.”
“That is where you are the wrong baby. It may seem like this now, but I wish you could have seen your mom in her prior days. Wow... She was glorious.”
The feeling of wandering eyes aiming at your face became stronger as you carried her along the street under your embrace.
“Before my dad, I guess.”
A tiny part of your soul lighten up, recognizing itself in your niece’s words, but there was no place to fuel her fiery tone.
“To be honest, I don’t know, but people change Nova, everyone eventually, even the ones we thought we had figured out, including ourselves.”
“Whatever, I don’t want him back in the house again if she puts him back, I’m moving with you.”
The decisiveness in her voice sent bad vibrations along your back.
Unusual memory mechanism. Alexis visited your mind, vivid as if you could see her across the street you were crossing, she waiting and shivering at your front door because you forgot the spare key in the store again.
After the scolding she would show a rose-colored box from Fincher’s cafe under her arm, comporting the most amazing banoffee pie, your favorite pie from your favorite place.
Fincher’s cafe, that was once located two blocks away from where you two lived was closed when the old owner went bankrupt and reopened in Queensway street, she would drive there every weekend to bring that rose-colored box under her arm and wait for you on the couch, once the spare key was in the fake birdhouse, with the TV turned on and the plates placed on the center table next to the wine.
“See, I don’t think that will happen.”
“How could you know? Didn’t you just said people change?”
“And love changes people, your mother has more for you than you could ever imagine and without measuring efforts. She wouldn’t make any decision that would hurt you, trust me.”
Nova quickly disengage from the conversation, staying on mute abruptly, leaving a temporary gap for thoughts of doubt to occupy. Your heart is worried, but a grown-up, worried heart shouldn’t be shown while trying to pass a sense of security. That included waiting for Nova to fall sleep before calling Alexis.
You climb the four steps and opens the blue door, face to face with smiling Rudolph from last Christmas, hanging by a thread along with Santa, waiting to be taken down as the feeling in the pit of your stomach.
“I ate at home so if you don’t mind I will go to bed now.”
Unreeling the red knitted scarf, the tenth big piece Alexis attempted to make at her knitting fase, Nova doesn’t look behind once. You watch her back as she went upstairs to the guest room, her special fort at five, and now her hideaway at fifteen, with fewer toys and Donkey, an old stuffed toy still sitting in the shelf waiting for no one in a room cleaned every week.
You dismiss the purple scarf from around your shoulders, the third big piece on your sister’s collection, not as good as the tenth, but it warmed you inside to observe her trying to hide a proud smile in seeing what she made wrapped around Nova and you.
A stupidly cold breeze hits the back of your neck before you turned around to close the door, the phone rings along with squealing tires of a black car on the other side of the street.

Behind the scenes of what caused Kai to finally leave his mother.
TW: Rape, human trafficking, CSA, physical abuse, self-harm
My head pounds when I blink my eyes open. Everything hurts. I know I shouldn’t have drunk so much whiskey last night, but I had to do something to get some sleep. I know it’s not healthy, but I don’t exactly have a plethora of resources. Not being what I am.
I can still feel their hands. Scrubbing my skin raw didn’t help. Chopping off my hair didn’t help. I can still feel their hands buried in my hair as they make me gag and choke. The thought alone makes me retch. I hate the men who rented me last night.
“Kai!” my mother shrieks.
That does wonders for my hangover.
Rubbing the back of my neck, I pad into the hall to see what she wants. The house smells like drugs. It’s filthy. I can’t do everything between work and being sold so she can buy drugs. I know it wouldn’t matter if I tried to do better; I won’t ever be enough.
She slams me against the wall.
“They complained about you,” she informs me. “I didn’t get paid as much as I was supposed to because of you.”
“What’d they complain about?” I don’t want to be here. Like, I don’t even want to exist at this point. Why should I keep existing if it’s just gonna hurt?
“Everything. They were extremely unsatisfied, Kai. Do you know what happens now?”
Yeah, I do. I get a beating.
“You’re not touching me,” I snap. I push past her and grab what I need to leave: My work tablet; my phone; my boots; my smokes, and my leather jacket. I’m not coming back.
I sprint to the only person who halfway tolerates me: Eirnin. Running hurts. But I have to. She might chase me.
My lungs throb as I pound their doorbell. I did something to my right ankle hopping over their low fence.
The door swings open to reveal a very grumpy-looking Fae. I probably should have taken my thumb off the doorbell at some point.
“Kai? What’s wrong?” they ask, softening. “Besides you trying to break my doorbell?”
“Can I crash here? I’m sorry. Did I—Were you in the middle of something?”
“What happened? Come in. It’s raining. You woke me up.”
“Do you ever wanna hit me?”
I didn’t realize it was raining.
I hobble inside unsteadily. My ankle hurts. My throat hurts. My everything hurts.
“No. I don’t. I mean, yes, you’re one of the most difficult people I’ve dealt with. But I don’t want to hurt you. What’s going on? Why are you having trouble walking? You smell like whiskey.”
“My mom. She tries. Really. I know she does. I could do better. I know that. I’m…hurt. I hurt my ankle jumping your fence, plus some other stuff. I’m hungover. Can I like move in? Permanently?”
They cock their head at me curiously. They haven’t glamoured their eyes yet. I love the warm chocolate color their eyes are naturally.
“Go sit. Get off your feet. I’ll bring an ice pack for your ankle. Where else are you hurt? As long as you behave,” they sigh.
I slink to their massive leather sectional. Sitting hurts.
“Where else are you hurt?” they repeat, sliding an ice pack under my ankle.
“I was raped, Eirnin.” I hate the ice in my voice. It’s not their fault.
Anger flickers in their eyes for a moment.
“How long ago?” they ask. Their voice comes out strained.
“Last night. It wasn’t the first time.”
“Do you want me to take you to have a rape kit done?”
I nod shakily. I didn’t think they would be kind. Not after how I’ve acted.
“I’m sorry. For everything,” I mumble.
“We can talk when we get home. Let’s get you taken care of, yeah?” They offer to help me up. I refuse. I don’t want anyone touching me.
“Go back with me?” I don’t want to be alone with the doctors.
“Of course.”
Getting up sucks. My ankle throbs and pulses when I try to stand on it. Everything else isn’t helping.
“I’ll put out as often as you want,” I mumble as I follow them to the garage. “Even the stuff I don’t like. I mean, I’m not really that into sex anyway. It’s tolerable with you, but it’s not something I really enjoy.”
They pause to put the ice pack away.
“I’m not expecting you to sleep with me in order to live here. Especially not the stuff you’re not into. I didn’t know you weren’t into it,” they assure me gently.
“So, you’re gonna stand me on the street corner and make me earn my keep that way? I just—It’s meh for me. Like, I get more out of knowing you enjoy it. I just—I’d rather watch a movie or something. I mean, I like getting off. I just prefer to not…have another person involved. Does that make sense?” I sit gingerly in the passenger of their nice white Chrysler.
“No. Kai, is someone pimping you out? It does make sense.” They shut my door for me before getting in the driver’s seat.
“Yeah. Um, you’re going in your pajamas?”
“Your mum? Getting you taken care of is more important. How’s your hangover?” They back out of the garage and down their somewhat long driveway.
“Yeah. She sells me and then beats me if I don’t do well enough. Men, women. Whoever will pay her. Been doing it since I was a kid.” I really need a smoke. “She uses the money for drugs. If I was just better, it wouldn’t be like this.”
“Oh, Kai. I’m sorry you’ve been dealing with that. It’s not your fault, boyo.” They smile gently. “How’s your hangover?”
“I haven’t thrown up.”
“You cut your hair.” They sound surprised.
“It looks bad, doesn’t it?”
“It, um, it could use some help.”
“I don’t want you fixin’ it.”
“Kai, I wouldn’t do anything to you.”
“I don’t want someone with the same…equipment as the people who hurt me touchin’ my head.” I glare but it’s half-hearted.
“Oh. I understand.” They don’t seem mad. Maybe a little hurt.
“I’ll look up videos and figure it out.” I sigh. “I’m sorry. I know you won’t do that.”
“I’m not upset.” They turn at the stoplight.
Anxiety knots my stomach as we get closer to the hospital. I’m scared to be checked out.
I have a panic attack during the exam. I don’t mean to. I know Eirnin probably isn’t happy with me. I know not meaning to is just an excuse and won’t help. I know they’ll probably hit me. I deserve it.
I’m given PeP pills and the number for the counseling center for assault survivors. I don’t know if I’ll call. Why would they help someone like me?
“Kai? You ready to go?” Eirnin asks gently, pulling me from my thoughts.
“Are you his significant other?” the doctor asks.
“Roommate.”
“Ah. Mr. Henderson, no penetrative sex for at least six weeks to give your injuries time to heal. No oral sex for at least three to four weeks to allow the damage to your mouth and throat to heal.”
“Not a problem, doc. Can I file charges?”
Eirnin arches a manicured brow in surprise.
“Yes, of course. I’ll have the cops come out and talk to you.” He smiles kindly before he leaves.
“Am I gonna lose my job?” I ask quietly.
“No, of course not. If you need some time off to deal and recover, it’s not a problem. I don’t expect you to come to work and act like everything is fine when you’re dealing with trauma. Whatever you need to do. Granted, I’m not Adrian, so he might say something different. I already called us both in for today.”
I didn’t expect kindness.
“Thank you.” I try to smile, but it feels mangled and broken. Just like me.
It’s a relief to get back to their place. The cops went with us to get my stuff. As long as they don’t know what I am, they’ll help me.
“You okay?” they ask once my stuff is inside.
“I need to smoke.”
I’m far from fine. I need five minutes to get it together before I break. If I fall apart, I don’t know if the pieces will go back together.
They find me sobbing on the back porch. I feel like I’m drowning in snot. My lungs burn from hyperventilating. I flinch, covering my head defensively. I don’t know if they’re mad. I don’t blame them if they are.
“Kai, give me the cigarette please,” they say quietly. I obey reluctantly.
I didn’t think they would be sadistic. I hold my hand out, palm down. My teeth sink into my lip as I wait for them to put the cigarette out on my skin.
They stub it out in the butt can they set up for me a while back.
“It’s okay. You could’ve—I know I’ve been bad,” I murmur.
“You’re a person. Not an ashtray or a punching bag. Or a sex toy with legs. You don’t need to worry about me hurting you,” they reply firmly. “I was afraid you might accidentally set your hair on fire. That was why I asked for the cigarette. I’m sorry. You’re safe.”
They kneel in front of me.
“I’m sorry. I—I had a panic attack. And—and I can’t—I can’t quit crying,” I hiccup.
“Kai, it’s okay. You’re safe. I’m not upset. I’m not mad. I’m right here.”
They stay until I’m calm. I still wait for them to hurt me.
“Do you want some warm tea?” they offer.
“Can I have some of your fancy Fae tea?”
“Allflower or dream lily?” They hold the door for me.
“Allflower. Gold.”
I like the sweet taste of gold allflower. It tastes kinda like a pear but not a pear.
I settle in at the white marble island. Their cream-colored Frenchie tip-taps around the kitchen happily. She’s so cute.
“Thank you. For doin’ this,” I mumble, tracing the veins in the marble.
“I wouldn’t have let you be homeless. Earl Grey? I’ll get you set up in one of the guest rooms.”
“I figured you’d turn me into a squirrel or somethin’. Yeah. Can I stay in your room? I don’t—Alone isn’t good.” I just got clean. It’s been a week since I last cut. And I wanna throw it away. I need the control. Because my world is just spinning off its axis.
“Will that be good for you mentally? I’m not expecting you to do anything. Okay? You can just exist in peace. How are you doing?” The glance they give me asks what they don’t.
“I don’t know. I know bein’ alone won’t be. I can do other things if you change your mind. I’ve been solid for a week.”
“Kai, no. I don’t want you to put out. Okay? A week is really good!” They set a tea bag on the counter before putting a kettle on to boil.
“I’m offering so you won’t make me miserable. Figured if I didn’t offer, you might just take it. It’s the longest I’ve gone.”
“I’m not a rapist. I’m proud of you!” They grin at me.
“Thank you. I, um, if I bring up a pic of a haircut, do you think you could do it?”
“I’m not a stylist, but I can try.” They smile gently. “So, what happened between us? Things had been good. Really good. You were one of my best friends. We were talking a relationship. I tried to have a bit of fun. What happened?”
I don’t want to explain. I don’t see how it will matter.
“I wanted to dye my hair as a control thing. As a way to get some control over my life. Why do you think I hurt myself? When you played your prank, you were just one more person in my life takin’ my control away. I was hurt and angry. I couldn’t believe you would do somethin’ like that. I felt like you did it to make fun of me. To hurt me. I acted badly. I know that. I wanted you… to leave me alone. I was in love with you. And I figured that maybe you didn’t feel the same way and just wanted sex so that was why you did it,” I mumble, staring at the island. I can’t look at them.
“You could have just told me that. I was in love with you too. I didn’t understand why you suddenly hated me. Kai, your behavior was very hurtful. You were abusive towards me.”
“Yeah, well, I don’t exactly have great communication skills. I’m sorry. Seriously.” I smile uncertainly. “I’m gonna do better. I don’t wanna be her. And I probably need therapy.”
“I noticed. We’re good. Okay? I mean, I don’t trust you, but we can rebuild. I think you do. How are you feeling?” They pour water from the kettle into two mugs. They add a pinch of dried allflower to mine before passing it to me.
“I’m glad. If I can find one who takes screwed-up werewolves, I’ll go. Drained. Broken. Like I got hit by a semi.”
“You wanna lie down and I’ll hold you?”
I don’t cuddle. I think I’ve maybe cuddled with them twice. They love it. It’s one of my least favorite things about sleeping in their bed; they wrap all their limbs around me like an octopus and I can’t move.
“No. I don’t want touched,” I tell them. I wait for some sort of retaliation. Some sort of blow up.
“Then I’ll respect that.”
Yeah, sure. Things like me don’t get respected. Things like me don’t get treated nicely. I’ve been reminded of that fact my entire life.
“You didn’t glamour your eyes.”
“Getting you help was more important than my vanity.” They pick at the chipped maroon polish on one of their nails.
“I like the color of your eyes when you don’t.”
What am I doin’? I wonder, sipping my tea. It’s wonderful.
“You do?” They sound pleased.
I nod. I don’t know how to tell them I could drown in the liquid chocolate pools. I don’t know if I can.
“Maybe when you’re better, we could go out?” They’re trying to sound nonchalant, but they’re tracing the edge of their mug with their pinkie like they do when they’re nervous.
“Maybe. No promises. If I’m good for you.” I’m not good for anyone right now.
“If you’re not, then we won’t. If you need help with your shower or anything, it’s cool. I won’t do anything. I promise.”
“I need you to keep an eye on me. Please. You leave me alone with anything sharp and it ain’t gonna be pretty.”
“I got you.” They smile gently.
I decide to be useful after supper and wash the dishes. They’re outside with their dog. There’s no knives. They even locked the silverware drawer so I can’t get to one.
Lost in my thoughts, I don’t hear them come in until they call my name from behind. I drop the mug I was washing. I watch as it falls in slow motion to the floor, shattering into pieces against the tile.
Crap. Crap. They’re gonna be furious. I’m in so much trouble! Maybe they won’t break any bones, I fret, curling up on the floor. Maybe if I make myself small enough, they won’t hurt me. Ceramic shards slice my palms and my knees, crunching beneath me as I press against the cabinet.
“Kai! You need to get up.” Their voice sounds like they’re underwater. Probably because of the blood rushing in my ears.
They hurry towards me, ceramic crunching under their fancy leather shoes. I whimper as I cower away from them. I hope they don’t kick me. I brace expectantly for some sort of pain.
“Sorry! Sorry!” I whisper.
“I’m not mad. You need to get up.” They reach for my hand and I recoil, bashing my head on the cabinet behind me.
My jeans are damp. Great.
“Oh, Kai. Give me your hand,” they sigh. “You’re gonna hurt your—Never mind. I’m not gonna hurt you, boyo.”
They crouch in front of me. They’re too close.
“I peed my pants,” I whisper.
“Can I help you up?” Their tone is gentle. They don’t seem mad. Their breathing is calm.
I let them help me. I wait to be shoved back into the shards.
“I’m sorry,” I murmur.
I don’t deserve help. They’ll probably beat me once my mess is cleaned up.
“I’m not mad.” They’re being patient.
“Do you want me to go get my belt? It’s fine. I’m used to it. I won’t hate you.”
“No. I’m not beating you. You—I scared you and you dropped a mug. If anyone should be upset, it’s you.” They lead me to the table by my elbow. “Sit. I’ll be right back.”
I obey. I don’t want them to hurt me. I didn’t mean to be bad. It was an accident.
They come back with a broom. My stomach drops. I’ve been beat with a broom before. I won’t be walking for a while after this; they’re stronger than my mother.
“Please. Please don’t. I’m sorry. I’m sorry!” I plead.
“I’m just cleaning the glass up. Did she hit you with a broom?” They keep their tone gentle.
I nod. I’m pathetic. I deserve being beat and kicked and sold. I deserve being screeched at and told how stupid I am. I deserve them beating me.
“Kai, no. I won’t hurt you. You’re safe. I’m not mad, boyo,” they soothe.
I know I’m probably wearing on their nerves. I’ve been here less than 24 hours and I’ve already broken a mug.
“I’m sorry. I’m not tryin’ to be difficult. Or be bad.”
“You’re doing fine, okay? I’ll help you clean up as soon as I’m done sweeping.”
I nod.
Whatever happens, I deserve it.
I flinch as they examine my hands. Their warm, soft hands are gentle as they clean the shallow cuts. My palms hurt.
“I’m sorry. I’m trying to be careful,” they assure me.
“Do you have any fancy Fae stuff you can use?”
“You mean Elven medicine?”
“Same thing.”
“Do I look like I have pointy ears? ‘Sides, Elves are white like you.” They smile teasingly.
“Sorry. It really hurts.” I don’t complain about pain often. The last time I complained before today was when I had my ribcage tattoo done.
“I know. I’m sorry for digging around. I’m trying to make sure there’s no pieces in there. I’ll peroxide them and I have a balm we can use. It’s silver-free. I actually got it just in case you needed it.”
It does something to me knowing they got a special balm in case I needed it. I didn’t think anyone cared that much. I feel special. Shocked. Touched.
“Could I hug you?” I ask.
“As soon as I’m done.”
“How’d you learn this? I mean, it’s not like you didn’t have people in the Court to do this.”
“Willow’s family taught me. Being kicked out means I had to learn to do a lot of things. Not like I can just run to a hospital and have them poke at me. Pretty sure my reaction to steel would freak out a human doc. I need help, I have a couple of Elves on speed dial. I need to see the ones on your legs.”
“Yeah, that would freak them out. I need clean pants anyway.”
I hope they know how much trust this is taking right now.
They don’t comment on the amount of scabbed over cuts as they clean the shallow slices from the mug. I’m trying to remember how to breathe. If they were to do something, I can’t get away right now. I have them in front of me, the linen closet on my right, and the bathroom sink on my left.
They stop touching me.
“Kai, it’s okay. You’re safe. Would you feel more comfortable cleaning them yourself?” they say quietly.
I forgot they can read emotions.
“You’re almost done,” I mumble.
“Do you want me to keep going? Or would you feel better if you did it?” They don’t seem mad.
“It’s fine. I’m fine.” I feel like I’m starting to check out. I do that sometimes when I’m really stressed or scared. It happens a lot during sex, especially if I bottom. Or if I’m trying to give someone with a penis oral. Even Eirnin, and they’ve been nothing short of kind and gentle with me.
They wait until I feel calmer to ask again.
“Um, I’d be less stressed if I did it,” I whisper.
They press the warm washcloth into my hand with a smile before standing.
I didn’t think they would be nice to me.
“I’m sorry,” I whisper.
“No. Kai, it’s okay. I’m gonna get the salve out, okay?”
If I can believe they’ll keep being good to me, I’d love to stay here forever.

Whither the Rep
Its destiny is not in the stars, but ourselves.
The Arkansas Repertory Theatre last week produced the greatest drama in the 44-year history of the stage last week when it announced its debt was so deep it had to cancel its last play of the season and bring down the curtain indefinitely.
The news got a standing "Oh, no" from actors and audiences who knew that Little Rock — and Arkansas — had something special in its professional theater. The Rep has a reputation of great performances among theatergoers and as a great place to work among the many actors who've come to Little Rock. The idea that The Rep might close brought into sharp focus what that would cost Little Rock — fortunately, before it's gone, not after.
The drama has been building for quite some time, thanks to a dive in ticket sales and a faltering capital campaign. The course of theater never does run smooth, the Bard might say, but finding itself without the means to stage its final 2017-18 season production, "God of Carnage," which was to open in June, the theater's board of directors darkened the house.
The secured and unsecured debt — including $1.6 million in bank loans, including mortgages — is in total "north of $2 million," Brian Bush, chairman of The Rep's board, said last week. The board is trying to raise $750,000 to $1 million immediately to settle vendor debt and begin paying off the Bank of the Ozarks, which Bush said has been "cooperative and intimately involved in what's going on for at least six months." The board is also forming a group, "The Next Act," to talk about what form The Rep should take to be sustainable.
The Rep does have assets: Its theater at Main and Sixth streets and two apartment buildings for its out-of-town actors have been appraised at more than $6.5 million, Bush said. That makes it "real estate rich and cash poor," he said. Selling its real estate "is on the table," though the fact that The Rep has a place for its actors to stay has been one of the great draws for them to the Arkansas theater.
The Rep had raised $1.7 million during the quiet phase of a capital campaign the past couple of years, Bush said, but had hoped to raise $2.7 million during that phase. The total goal of $5.2 million would have retired all debt and created a cushion for the future, but with declining revenues — The Rep could only fill 47 percent its seats this season, Bush said, and campaign cash had to be spent to put on the plays.
The Rep's staff will be cut from 30 to 10 as of May 8. Producing Artistic Director John Miller-Stephany is among those losing his job. The theater education program, which breaks even, will continue through the summer.
There may be some good news: Potentially waiting in the wings is a $1.8 million grant The Rep has applied for from the Windgate Charitable Trust of Siloam Springs, which has made several multimillion-dollar gifts in the past few years to the arts, including $40 million last year to the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville to create an art and design district and $20.3 million to UA Little Rock and $15.5 million to UA Fort Smith for their fine arts buildings. Should The Rep receive the grant, it would have to match it.
***
"What I can tell you," actor Patrick Halley said last week, "is The Rep had a sterling reputation in New York as a wonderful and warm and incredibly artist-friendly place to work. The way I got my first audition there was a friend I knew had worked there — I begged him, 'Could you put in a good word for me?' " Since then, Halley has appeared in a number of Rep productions, including "The School for Lies" last October.
"What always set The Rep apart was, some places you would go and work in a metropolis with a ton of options as far as culture goes. The audiences at The Rep always stood out as excited and engaged and grateful and you really got a sense of the impact that your work was having in the community." Not every audience is like that, he said.
The Rep's staff of designers "are at the top of their game," Halley said, "and that's not always common. Folks like Linda Parlier [assistant to the production manager] and Alan Branson [sound design and engineer] and Mike Nichols [technical director and set designer], the costume shop — they had a world-class team."
Halley called Bob Hupp, the producing artistic director from 1999-2016, "an inspiring leader" and managing director Mike McCurdy "one of the kindest and sweetest men on the face of the earth."
Halley was in Fayetteville when the news The Rep would suspend operations got out.
"The Rep has been so good to me," Halley said. "When I got the news, it felt like someone has passed away. I was so very, very sad."
On Friday, the Friends of the Arkansas Repertory Theatre announced a Rally for the Rep to be held Tuesday, May 1, in front of the theater, with music by the Greasy Greens, and special friends of the theater, including founder Cliff Baker, the director from 1976-1998 and a guest director for the past 17 years, will attend. By Monday, 1,300 people had clicked the "Interested" button and more than 200 people had donated a total of $73,000.
"In a strange way," Halley said, "the level of outcry speaks to how special it was." As Joni Mitchell sang, you don't know what you've got till it's gone.
Candyce Hinkle has been an actress for 40 years, and has appeared in plays at The Rep and other local theaters, as well as in such nationally released movies as the Coen brothers' "True Grit."
"The Rep has been my heart, honey, and this is just devastating," Hinkle said. "You can go anywhere in Central Arkansas and see talented people tell good stories, but when you go to The Rep ... . You don't realize how supported they are by technical artists. Mike Nichols' sets, the ability to create atmosphere by sound and lights. It's such a team effort to put on the shows that they do. That is what we don't get anywhere else. It's a professional jewel in our midst."
Hinkle is convinced that there is enough support for The Rep that it can reopen and stay open. "It doesn't have to come back as the grandiose giant it had become. Even if it comes back with a different flavor, but the same dedication to technical support and quality of performances: That's what we have to save."
The school must go on, as well, Hinkle said. "How many lives has that program changed? Just to give those kids that. They are treated professionally: It's not a babysitting opportunity. It's hard work: You hold a kid to a standard, and they're going to meet it. It's strictly professional, it's not just fun — it's work to get to the fun."

"I took a couple of days of heartache and mourning," Cliff Baker said from his home outside Mayflower, but now he's ready for action.
Baker came to Arkansas from Missouri in the 1960s to enroll in the Arkansas Arts Center's bachelor of fine arts program, which in its short time drew national accolades and a visit from The Juilliard School at its closing to recruit some of its actors. After working in theater outside Arkansas for a while, Baker returned to visit friends "and they said, 'Let's do a play,' and I rented a storefront ... and they were all kinky plays," Baker said.
The Arkansas Philharmonic was also short-lived. Support for a new theater came from old-money folks who were thrilled to see a higher level of theater established in Little Rock. The Rep sold 300 season tickets at a fundraiser in the posh Edgehill neighborhood "and we didn't have a theater and we didn't have a season," Baker said.
The theater opened in what had been Hunter Memorial Methodist Church, across the street from MacArthur Park, and though the venue was humble, the theater staged ambitious productions, from the breakout gay-themed play "The Boys in the Band" (performed at the Arts Center before its Off-Broadway premiere) to musicals "Marat/Sade," "Threepenny Opera" and "Ain't Misbehavin."
The actors were young, the budget was a shoestring, and even if Baker rehearsed a play for two weeks, "If I knew it was going to be bad, we just didn't do it."
"In the nonprofit theater world, I don't think you ever feel like you are on your feet," Baker said. But in the 1980s, when the budget for The Rep reached $500,000 "and the actors weren't having to do everything," he decided it was time to look for a larger home. The Rep moved to its building on Main, with its larger theater and production space, in 1988. Its operating budget is $4 million.
"I think the idea of a professional theater made all the difference" to the Little Rock audience, Baker said. "And people felt like they may not always like a particular play, but they knew it was going to be well done and there would be elements they would remember — the performances or the design."
Baker doesn't believe people have lost interest in live theater. Little Rock and North Little Rock support The Weekend Theater, The Public Theatre, Celebrity Attraction productions at Robinson Center Performance Hall, the Argenta Community Theater, the Arkansas Arts Center's Children's Theatre and Murry's Dinner Playhouse. But those venues — primarily Celebrity Attractions shows in the renovated Robinson — also present competition.
Baker does think some of the excitement is missing. People can't expect a big "joyous hit" like "Sister Act," which Baker last directed at The Rep, every time they go to the theater. And a theater can't sustain itself by planning that the success of one big show will carry the others.
Now, with the "Second Act" strategizing, Baker is thinking about how to reopen The Rep in a model that would be sustainable. "That's where I'm focusing. I'm calling friends and colleagues and and asking what works, what doesn't work.
"It's an age-old dilemma for nonprofit theater. The Rep kind of overgrew and couldn't support it."
***
Ginger Pool, producing artistic director of Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, Va., has felt The Rep's pain. So when Pool heard about The Rep's crisis, she called board member Ruth Shepherd and offered to help in any way she could.
In 2009, Mill Mountain, which had its roots in a playhouse established in 1964, found itself $860,000 in debt. Its debt wasn't related to real estate, but because for a decade it had over-produced, employed a fulltime professional staff of 23 with benefits, suffered high overhead and staged "a little bit of vanity theater, producing shows that Roanoke wasn't supporting. The quality never dropped, but when the audience is not listening to you ... ."
And so Mill Mountain ceased operations, keeping only Pool, the director of its revenue-producing education program. The fulltime staff and 16 contract employees and 12 interns were let go. It cashed in its Actors Equity Association bond.
So Pool got to work by meeting one-on-one with vendors, negotiating such things as payment plans and tax credits and "asking for forgiveness. ... It was the hardest work I've ever done, and the most rewarding." Within a year, all but $75,000 of the debt had been paid off or negotiated.
For a while, Mill Mountain's children's theater put on the only productions, on holidays. The theater realized "Roanoke hasn't given up on us yet," Pool said, when it was announced the youths would perform "Annie": The musical was a sellout before the play opened.
It took Mill Mountain four years to have a "soft reopening." A theater that once produced 14 shows on its main stage a season now produces three. The new business model, Pool said: "We have made a promise that each individual production will make money standing by itself. We are not in the frame of mind, do this giant show to pay for this riskier show. ... That's a slippery slope for theaters. ... So we look at what we're choosing, and if we have any hesitation if this show can't stand alone, we throw it out. We drill down to worst-case scenarios, really analyzing everything, before we announce [the season] to the public."
Mill Mountain still does theater that might be called art rather than entertainment, but does it in its small black box theater. It has also added Mill Mountain Music, twice-a-year concerts.
"I will say people don't donate money to pay off your debt. There are going to be angels in the community, but [their gifts are] not going to be of the magnitude that your problems are over," Pool warned.
***
Ironically, The Rep has been the anchor of development on Main Street, in what Mayor Mark Stodola calls the "Creative Corridor." Its educational program in a renovated historic building catercornered from the theater along with Ballet Arkansas's studio and a private gallery have supported the idea of a downtown arts district .
The mayor learned of The Rep's financial troubles a couple of weeks ago, he said. He said he'd approached Celebrity Attractions, which has a substantial marketing budget, about the possibility of the company's taking a Rep show on the road, and noted that the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau supports The Rep with a contribution of $50,000 a year. The city made a small contribution last fall by buying tickets for a group.
Stodola said The Rep had also broached the idea that perhaps the city could support the theater by buying the theater building and leasing it back to The Rep for a nominal sum, as is done in other cities. But Stodola said that idea was, for him, a no-go. "Other organizations that we support, they are city commissions, like the Arkansas Arts Center or the Museum of Discovery or the military museum," Stodola told the Times. If it were to become a commission, The Rep board would have had to give up its governance, Stodola said, which was something it was reluctant to do.
Board chair Bush said The Rep is open to collaborations with colleges and universities and other theaters.

Perhaps you are asking yourself, what sort of self-respecting city can't find the audience to keep its professional theater open? Former Producing Artistic Director Hupp, who is now artistic director at Syracuse Stage on the campus of Syracuse University in New York, said competition from the rise of local theater groups is a factor, if not the factor, for The Rep's woes.
"Celebrity Attractions has been performing [in the past], but they've never been able to bring in the tours they're bringing in now [thanks to the $70.5 million renovation of Robinson]. I mean, look at 'The Lion King,' 'Phantom of the Opera,' a tour of 'Les Mis' ['Les Miserables']."
"One of the things that's great about The Rep is the intimate relationship between the audience and the performers. So, that always played pretty well and distinguished The Rep from Celebrity Attractions. But the new model, and the amount of money the city put into the renovation of Robinson, definitely has an impact" on The Rep's ticket sales, Hupp said.
To those who are skeptical about competition's role in The Rep's trouble filling seats, Hupp insisted there is "legitimacy to the external factors."
Too, The Rep's real estate burden, which includes both debt and ongoing maintenance, is unusual, Hupp said. "The expense of owning those properties has always been a challenge for The Rep," he said.
The former director said he was saddened, but not surprised, by the news of The Rep's suspension. But he said The Rep can return.
"If there were some combination of grassroots support and either city leadership or private leadership that comes in and helps stabilize the theater, there is a path forward. There are people who feel very passionate about The Rep. You've seen the social media posts that have come out. That initial reaction of surprise and shock — if that can move beyond that initial emotional reaction to real activism, real organization, then The Rep has a great shot of sustaining itself in a reimagined form."
Here's how Hupp puts the question of what it says about a city that lets its professional theater fail this way: "I think the question people who live in Little Rock have to ask is, 'Is the situation with The Rep a canary in the coal mine?' Is this indicative of other, more challenging issues with the city?
"A thriving city should have thriving arts. And the arts organization has to be responsive and also provide leadership and vision for what the arts mean to the community. ... A healthy organization, wherever you are in the country, has to generate earned income and the city has to show its partnership in that equation through philanthropic dollars. And that's public support from the city itself and private support from those who have means and can help."
