should I post all my stuff to this blog as well instead of just linking to backloggd?

Hey guys, how's it going? I've recently gotten back into gaming after taking a break to focus on Sims 4 (my main blog @rainmustfallts4 is where I post those stories!) I have been gaming since I was a kid, with the earliest game I can remember being 007 Goldeneye on the N64. 

Despite that, I've always been a PlayStation gal and it's my platform of choice. If there's a game I really want to play, I will give it a go on PC, but I'm not a huge PC gamer and my laptop is even less of a fan lol I also play a few mobile games but those are often updated and do not have an “end.”

My favorite genres are adventure, racing, casual and simulation, but I'll try pretty much anything. Actually, I disliked Sci-Fi games until a few years ago, now I find myself playing quite a few haha Most of the games I buy are either on sale or come from PlayStation Plus. 

My backlog is literally bigger than Mt. Everest and I struggle to finish games. I hate games that are 20+ hours long and open world because I get distracted too easily and it takes me like 8 years to finish them 🥴 Yet I still keep playing them lol All the coolest games are so long, man. It feels like developers think length = great game which is not true.

I am a bad gamer. I don't like challenge, I like story. Games like Elden Ring or Dark Souls or Nioh… I can't even begin to play them. That's not to say they are bad games, they're just not for me. I know my limits and games like those are for me to watch others play instead of playing them myself.

My reviews are not professional, either, and many are just my thoughts or feelings about a game. They're also filled with cussing ⛵️ because I am a degenerate (pirate) sailor. 

I do not care about politics or real world BS. This blog is about gaming and gaming only. You know, that thing we play to temporarily ESCAPE real life. So, if you bring that to me, you'll be blocked. I don't care what the creator of a game said 5 years ago or who a writer supports. Learn to separate the art from the artist and keep your complaints on Twitter, thank you. 

With that being said… let's play some games!

Elden Ring Achievement Data

I've camped myself outside Mohg's boss room and I'm being summoned every 5-10 minutes as players prepare for the DLC. That's just long enough to get bored between summons; so to keep myself amused, I looked at achievement data while waiting.

All data is from 2024-06-16 from PSN (Playstation), Exophase (Xbox), and Steam (PC).

This first chart above is a combination of story-required achievements and Shardbearers who could be reliably placed in the story based on when you get access to them (which turns out to be all of them). All three platforms follow the same general trend. There is an interesting drop off right after Morgott. I'm not sure if that's because the difficulty scaling for Mountaintop of the Giants gets immediately harder compared to the first handful of game regions or something else.

This second chart above is the optional, non-Shardbearer bosses who are also not associated with Ranni. Things like Commander Niall, who is required to access Malenia, are excluded. Any bosses you meet along Ranni's questline (required or not) are also excluded. Interestingly, these all follow the same trend as story-required and Shardbearer achievements. The cross where Xbox players pull more achievements early in the game and slightly less toward the end repeats, but much more obviously. The drop off is even around the same place in the story (Leyndell). I think given that we see it twice, this might suggest a slightly higher attrition rate on Xbox, especially for optional material late in the game.

Above is data on the collectibles achievements. Collectibles achievements are entirely optional. So following from the optional boss content above, it makes sense that the PS players dominate this space--assuming the percentages are calculated by a similar method by each platform.

And finally below is data on the Endings and "All Trophies" achievements. This, too, makes sense in that the PS players tend to stick it out toward the end a bit more than the other platforms (once again, assuming similar calculation methods). Surprising no one, the "Age of Stars" ending continues to be the most popular across every platform.

Consistent across all of this data is the fact that the consoles track together, but the PC achievement totals are far below. Because the offset is so consistent in size, I am tempted to think this might be some sort of systematic error in how the percentages are calculated. Maybe Steam uses something like "installed (but not necessarily played)" as their total player base, and maybe some people leave it unplayed in their library. Or maybe it's something as simple as players buying Elden Ring during a steep Steam sale--something that doesn't happen on consoles, at least not nearly as often with not nearly as steep a discount. Perhaps buying the game due to a sale making it appealing instead of because the game is already something you wanted tends to cause attrition across all achievements.

So we’ve got the trophy list for both volumes of Battle Network Legacy Collection!

For the most part these seem easy to collect, and I like that!  You’ll get a lot of these just by playing through the games, plus a handful of others that track various things the game itself does not take into account for completion.  It looks like 3 and 5 don’t even ask you to do any of the post-game; 2 and 6 have trophies that sort of bring you to the cusp of the post-game, but then leave it to you to decide if you want to jump in or not.  That’s…also sort of the case with 4, but considering how much you have to do to get to 4’s post-game, it feels like a bigger ask (especially considering there are separate trophies for getting all Souls in RS and BM).  And for some reason BN1 has a trophy for actually completing the game and beating Bass?  Odd choices.

I’m lowkey a little sad that there are so few for BN5 tbh, but oh well.  Also feels a little daunting to see separate trophies for each version of 3 on…but…I might still go for it…

I started out playing 007 Golden Eye on the N64 when I was just a kid but once I got a PlayStation, I was hooked to the system. Oh, while this isn't exactly a game collection/ backlogging site, I do like Exophase for compiling all my game achievements into a single profile. Even if I'm not into competitive high scores and stuff, its still very appealing and to see all my gaming stats accumulated over the years.

How do you keep track of your video games?

I spent a great deal of time trying to find a site that let's me track games I've beat, 100% completed, and games I want to play/ replay for my backlog. I have a MyAnimeList, so I thought surely I could find a gaming equivalent and well, after having signed up for 6 different sites, I haven't really found one that I like. So far I've tried...

Grouvee Eh, its meh. Not horrible, but not great for me. Just kinda bland.

ggapp.io Pretty simple and not too bad. Biggest con is no choice of console/ platforms. Some old games are vastly different on other consoles, enough so I'd consider them their own game.

HowLongToBeat Too complex and too much logging. I don't want to keep track of all my hours in each game...

Backloggd Decent enough. Simple and clean. Might go with this one. I think its based on one of the better movie-based sites, Letterboxd.

Allmy.Games Simple collection site. Import from your own game libraries and add custom games . However, its a bit buggy and I noticed many games missing cover artwork.

Backloggery Waaaay too much text. No game database, everything typed manually. I don't have the time investment nor the will for that.

So many of them are too complicated and in-depth for me. I don't want to feel like I'm writing a report on my gaming life. I simply want an easy to assemble collection of ALL my games across ALL platforms including old retro games.

Sometimes I think I may be in over my head when it comes to trying to categorize my games. I should probably just take a step back, breathe, and just go with the flow and play whatever games I want when I want. I tend to go too hard at things occasionally and it only overcomplicates matters, which playing games should be a fun activity not stressful haha.

Well, back to keeping a simple list of games to beat on a wordpad document!
