I never saw live Aladdin, what went down?

so muchhhhh my dude and none of it good

i have a lot to say so under the cut it goes.......

okay so i assume u know original disney's aladdin so i wont go into it much except to remind u of their jasmine: strong-willed, says what she wants to say, all in all a solid character

what they do with the live-action aladdin however is make her... well... not that

they have a much more political tilt throughout the 2019 movie, with jasmine wantin to be a good ruler for her people or whatever. politics also are why the sultan and jafar are at odds, and overall it's like a Thing in the movie and i dislike that but whatever their remake ig

along with being focused on wanting to be a Good Ruler and saying that she's really educated (she has a lot of books and maps and stuff), the movie also gives her the sultan-ship at the end, and she just picks to marry aladdin afterwards

ig they thought making her want to be a ruler an empowerment thing? like, 'look! a smart woman who wants to be a good ruler! she's strong and empowered! no sexism in male sultans, she's the sultan!' etc etc; versus the original jasmine who just a) wanted to not live in the palace forever b) wanted love that was for Her and not the power a marriage to her would offer

i dont agree with this- original jasmine's goals were perfectly fine, as wanting to Get Out is normal, and she wasn't 'boy obsessed'. she just wanted to be loved for herself. women are allowed to want that y'know

that aside though, her character throughout the movie is just... so much weaker. she's always acting Proper, which ig makes sense for a 'princess', but that means that some of jasmine's Best lines never happen- at one point aladdin literal answers question 'just what are you looking to buy with your jewelry and jams' (yes, jams) with 'you'

and jasmine just unhappily smiles through it!!!! original jasmine hears the men discussing her and storms into the convo just to remind them she's 'not a prize to be won!' but this jasmine gets that told to her face and she just mutters smth before making an excuse to walk away!! ugh!!!

she also tears up/cries a lot which- listen, nothing wrong with crying, u can be a strong character and cry, but i think it's pretty telling that they made jasmine, a female character who only cries once in the original (to the best of my recollection- it's when she thinks aladdin is dead, very understandable), pretty much tear up every time she's even a Bit stressed

they make her very emotional, which is not a bad thing!! but again when ur original character is so strong willed and fierce, this is very clearly a down grade!!!

she gets two original songs, but both of them Suck- they're very 'surface-level female empowerment' tunes, with those sorta high-tone 'emotional' pitches, jasmine looking on the verge of tears in both. they dont match the rest of the soundtrack At All which makes it worse

her second song occurs after jafar has taken power and orders her to be removed from the room- after she shut up at his command 'be silent woman' and told her tiger to stand down at his word as well, weak ass- and all of the motions that go with it are just In Her Head

y'know how in the original, all the songs happen while things are happening? aladdin's actually escaping guards, the genie's actually making the parade happen? that happens in the 2019 one too but not for jasmine's second song

it's all in her head!! it's just imaginative bullshit!! and when she ends the song and actually does something??? it's just a speech

she, with red and wet eyes, gives a Speech to the head guard and gets him to turn on jafar, which is USELESS because he just uses his genie wish powers to get rid of the guards

so it's pointless!!! all pointless!!!!!!

and later, when her father is threatened, she fights back by... agreeing to marry jafar if he stops. that's it

what happened to the jasmine who swore she would never bow to jafar??? who spat in his face even as he held All the power??? who did her best to fight and fight even when every odd was stacked against her??????????

let me be clear: there is nothing wrong with female characters who are smart, who are emotional, who want to be rulers, who aren't fighters- they're great! they're valid! cool!

but when jasmine's original character is someone who is a fighter, who doesn't cry at everything, and who speaks her mind despite what's proper and all?? it's such a disservice to her character

especially bc it's so clearly just. performative 'female empowerment' or whatever

they play more into things that are seen as 'objectively good and strong and empowering' like being Educated Smart and Wants To Rule and shit and take away the parts that are probably too 'uncomfortable' for the cis white men working on it- like when she won't let herself be talked about like an object, or when she only acts 'alluring' when it's part of a ploy (before calling prince ali a snob, when trying to get the lamp away from jafar)

but the effect achieved is the opposite- it just makes her feel weak and pitiful as a character, one who barely has an impact on the story and carries no real power or character

After, you may feel on high (like after good marijuana) have a headache or just feel weird. Personality Just remember one word - COMPLEX. You will never really know how he will behave, because he’s like chameleon - he adapts to people, situations and places. For one, he will be a nice guy full of heat, and for another a dark tricky spirit. He may look cold and serious at the beginning, associated with his “knowledge aspect” (air) but he’s also very emotional spirit. He’s impulsive, determined and it’s quite easy to offend him. He has these two aspects connected (intellect/emotions) with whom empathy and healthy thinking can exist. If he behaves quite dark/annoying/arrogant that’s usually because he wants to protect himself (it was a bit like empath complex - the most openhearted and sensitive people are used by others the most) So he seeks balance and tests people. Tips for working

Take it slow. This spirit can make you very obsessed (u feel these nights when you were searching the entire internet to find him and you didn’t know why?) [AHAHAme] Look through your thoughts and set your clear goal - if you want to find him try invoke him or meditate, but don’t rush. Follow your goal not obsession. Dantalion will not run away from this world.

If you want to start relationship with him, prepare for patience again. At the beginning he’s formal, cold and not very emotional. He must find a place for you and adapt. (he’s a real thinker) Show the heart, he will show it too.

Get ready for a tests - he can test your intellect or your transparency in thinking.

Speak directly. He has sense of humor, don’t worry, but sometimes he takes words a bit too literally…[he do tho]

He doesn’t like work alone. If you’re this type and you prefer sit and wait when the spirit will end all his work, this may take a long time (except when these aren’t big things, then no problemo) Otherwise, He may start to make sure you’re still planning to pay him, and everything will be slower.
