never mind cant get the words to come across right. basically i think showing interest in the wta is seen as more socially valuable (in specific spaces) in a way that is just not relevant for the atp.

i think sometimes i come on too strong with the atp-hate so just know that this is absolutely not that but just genuinely developing a curiosity about the trend ive observed of tennis fans being a lot more selective with players they casually follow on the atp than the wta. am not done considering my thoughts about this just dont want to forget bc i think its an interesting discussion pls let me elaborate before you get upset !!!!!!!!

#i.e. the wta is a lot more marked than the atp #if you say you're a tennis fan most people assume you watch the atp (or perhaps the atp and the wta)#going out of your way to associate with the wta allows you to align yourself with the desired group (or unalign‚ depending on perspective)#even if the means by which you do this is not the most efficient way of expressing your opinions #what i mean is there is very little information *gained* by saying 'here's half a dozen tennis players that i kind of care about'#no one really gives a shit that i sometimes watch sebastian baez #even sebastian baez fans aren't much more likely to follow me if i say i only casually follow him #so there's just not much point in including that iinformation for the atp #but for the wta #expressing casual interest distances you from the severe misogynists who despise it/think it's significantly worse than the atp #and likewise aligns you with people who share similar stances to you #sure a hardcore penko fan probably isn't much more likely to follow me if i say i casually follow her #but they might be more likely to follow me simply bc in listing her i am showing interest beyond one or two 'basic' or popular players #does this make any sense at all? i realize ive put this all in the tags which is kind of unhelpful but. idk. im feeling weird #i also think it's because.......this is kind of an optimistic spin of what i had originally written #so i dont really want to be like BLAH HERES THE OPINION WRITTEN IN STONE #like ehhh. i do think its all of this in principle but i think there are other forces at play re: the way atp vs. wta players are perceived #anyways. sorry!
