the retcon has been retconned. you can now become an archdragon with practice. dragons can learn to speak from essentially whenever the hell they stop being babies (uhhh around 3 from my WoF based age chart).

also according to S4E9 zym can understand human because zubeia scolded him with it (it's not just dragonic that we can understand because we are The Audience, soren reacted to it so no). fun.
