ok so I am pretty new to polyamory so I don't quite know how I am supposed to be feeling about a situation I am in and would love some guidance. Me and my girlfriend and are in an open relationship, we started off casual mostly on my part bc my last relationship got way too serious way too fast but we've ben together a few months now and about two months ago I wanna say? she started dating another person. she texted me after they impulsively made out and the girl is poly so thats all good. neither me or my gf have been in an open relationship or done anything to do with polyamoy before so we are just kinda figuring it out. but my gf and her new gf have been moving quite fast and they now live together and we are now in super lockdown so I haven't seen her in a few months. we text sometimes but mostly just abt being excited to see each other again. last night I get a text that is a photo of her and her gf with matching rings on. they are engaged. i sent some texts in reply, mostly just saying we should talk on the phone but my gf has a day job and has not gotten back to me yet. I feel like she should have told me that this was going to happen right? I understand it must have been pretty impulsive but still. also the fact that they have been spending so much time is something I was happy abt bc she has had company but now I can't help but feel jealous and left out. any advice about anything here would be really appreciated. I'm rly sorry about how long this got my god

Wow, this is a crazy story.

I can see where you're coming from. It's pretty shocking that no one mentioned to you that they might propose and I'm having trouble imagining why they didn't. If my gf got engaged without anyone letting me in on it beforehand, I'd feel jealous and left out, too, and I'd wonder if there was a reason they didn't tell me. On the other hand, if I was planning to propose to my gf, I wouldn't be able to keep it from her partners because I'd want help picking a ring, and a time and place, and maybe even having them involved. And even if I wasn't close to those partners, I'd at least mention that I was thinking of marrying her to make sure everyone was comfortable with it - since polygamy is still illegal, I'd want to make sure no one felt like I was trying to prioritize myself, and that no one else had a better reason to want to marry her instead of me (needs the legal benefits more, for instance). I know a lot of poly people will have weddings without the paperwork, or stay engaged forever, but it doesn't seem like that's the case here.

I'd definitely find a time to talk to your gf privately and express how you're feeling, hopefully when her gf isn't around. It's awesome that she's so happy with her new gf, but it's not ok to keep you completely out of the loop.

Keep me updated on this situation, I'm curious to see how things go and I'm rooting for all three of you! Take care of yourself in the meantime. <3
