Watching the new Caped Crusader series and it's good but unfortunately a franchise as big and as subject to reboots as Batman can't avoid comparison between versions. So what I'm getting is that this version of Bruce is as green and as grim as Pattinson's Bruce, with the established social persona of Bale's Bruce, and the overall tone is as dark as the Keaton movies. Obvs the vague time period setting allows it to take elements from the earliest comics and the art deco style of the 90s animated series, but it's also clearly inspired by the heavier noir & gangster films of the mid 20th century so it's altogether on that line between fantastical superhero story and realistic crime drama. With a couple of added twists to make it stand out as unique. It's a really interesting approach and I've still a lot to watch but it seems to be doing a better job of certain other grimdark Batman stories I've seen or read.
#the lead actor is no Kevin Conroy but he's still doing a good job#not so sure on Alfred's voice there's just something about it that doesn't sound right#I get that it's the early days of the whole bat operation but something about Alfred just sounds too young#which is weird because unless I'm mistaken the actor is in his 60s?#Bullock is always gonna be a crooked cop but him being in the Penguin's pocket was something I didn't see coming#and I've heard a lot about this version of Harley so I'm excited for her episode#I love the references to Edith Head Gloria Swanson and Jack Pierce#and this version of Clayface being a mishmash of mystery and horror actors active from the 1930s to 60s#especially considering it was Basil Rathbone's version of The Mark of Zorro the early comics claim Bruce saw with his parents that night#so if you're looking for lighthearted bat stories stick to the stuff aimed at kids#but if you're ok with things getting brutal there's a lot to like here#who am I talking to?#doesn't matter#I sometimes like pretending I'm a more important critic than I am and it doesn't hurt anybody#why are you still here?#scroll on
