Alex Lees has been appointed club captain at Durham and signed a contract extension that will keep him in the north-east for at least the next three seasons.Lees, who played 10 Tests for England in 2022, captained Durham to the T20 Blast quarter-finals last season and has led their white-ball sides for the last two years. He will now take over in the County Championship too, replacing Scott Borthwick who is moving into a player-coach role as he approaches the end of his career.Born in Halifax, Lees was widely predicted to be a future Test regular when he broke through at Yorkshire and captained their T20 side at 22. But he struggled for form after Jason Gillespie left as coach and made the move to Durham in 2018, where he showed enough to earn an England call-up after their 4-0 defeat in the 2021/22 Ashes. He showed enough in his maiden series in the Caribbean to be retained for England's first home summer under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum's leadership, but was eventually dropped with a record of two fifties in 19 innings and an average of 23.84. He has been prolific for Durham since, scoring nine Championship hundreds in the last two seasons."I am delighted to be named the new men's club captain at Durham," Lees said in a club statement. "The move to the north east has been a good one for me, so to now be given the opportunity to captain Durham is a privilege and an honour. I believe this squad has the potential to really challenge to go on and win trophies."We have a great bunch of lads here and that is the thing which excites me the most. I feel like we have a group of players who can really challenge and go on to look to win something. This opportunity to captain Durham gives me an opportunity to put some real focus into the red-ball team, building on the foundations that we have built over the last few years."Marcus North, Durham's director of cricket, said that he was "thrilled" that Lees had agreed to sign an extension to his deal, which was due to expire at the end of the 2025 season. "Alex's dedication, passion and ambitions for the club has been evident since his arrival in 2018," he said. "He is a popular and respected figure in the squad who leads with tenacity."Durham have strengthened their top order for 2025, with Will Rhodes and Emilio Gay signing from Warwickshire and Northamptonshire respectively. Sam Conners, who has played for England Lions, has also joined from Derbyshire and will add depth to their seam attack.Lees may be able to call upon Stokes and Mark Wood in the early stages of the 2025 season after neither player registered for the IPL auction, though their availability will be dictated by the ECB. Brydon Carse will not be available in April or May, after he was signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the recent mega-auction.

James Anderson Courted by Major League Cricket for 2025 Season
James Anderson, England's record-breaking Test wicket-taker, is emerging as an unexpected candidate for Major League Cricket's next season.
Sources have revealed that key figures from at least one Major League Cricket (MLC) team have taken notice of Anderson’s recent remarks about a potential comeback to limited-overs cricket. These discussions could see the 42-year-old veteran joining the league’s third edition in the U.S. next year.
Anderson might stand to earn approximately £135,000 for a brief stint in MLC, a league that attracted several prominent cricketers for its 2024 season. Notably, Australian captain Pat Cummins has a significant contract with the San Francisco Unicorns extending to 2027. Additionally, Australians Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Travis Head were integral to the Washington Freedom, who triumphed in this year’s tournament under the guidance of coach Ricky Ponting.
Anderson, who retired from international cricket after England's first Test against the West Indies at Lord's in July, has since joined the England backroom staff. His current contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) extends through September.
The seasoned fast bowler recently affirmed his commitment to continue mentoring England’s pace attack for their upcoming Test series against Pakistan in October, with plans to be part of the team’s tour to New Zealand later in the year.
Despite his last T20 appearance being in 2014, when he played in the Blast for Lancashire, Anderson’s dedication to Test cricket over the past decade has kept him away from franchise cricket. Nevertheless, he is confident in his fitness and ability to compete in the T20 format.
MLC, backed by influential figures including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, is keen to draw more of England’s elite players. Previous participants in the league have included World Cup winners Liam Plunkett and Jason Roy, the latter of whom notably signed a £300,000 deal with the Los Angeles Knight Riders after leaving his ECB white-ball contract.
Launched in 2023, MLC will grow from 19 games to 34 by 2025 and has recently been awarded official List A status.

Virat Kohli Continues With Blockbuster Performances In Big Tournaments, Encouraging Signs For India Ahead Of T20 WC
Following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the biggest positive for the franchise and Team India is the form of batter Virat Kohli, who reinvented himself with a more attacking gameplay, especially against spin and once again delivered in a big tournament.
After 15 matches, Virat has ended his IPL campaign as the Orange Cap holder for the most runs in the season. He has scored 741 runs at an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69, with a century and five half-centuries. His best score is 113*.
What stands out is his strike rate of 154.69, his best-ever in an IPL season and the total of 38 sixes that he has hit, equalling his six-tally of 2016 IPL in which he had blasted 973 runs in 16 matches with four centuries and seven fifties at an average of 81.08 and a strike rate of over 152.
Heading into the ICC T20 World Cup, Virat is the most in-form player in the national side and him playing all games is a no brainer. In the 2023 season of the IPL, he scored 639 runs in 14 matches at an average of 53.25 and a strike rate of 139.82, with two centuries and six fifties. His best score was 101*.
Combining his statistics across both seasons, he has scored 1,380 runs in 29 innings at an average of 57.50 and a strike rate of 147.43, with three centuries and 11 fifties, best score of 113*. This makes him the most consistent batter across both the 2023 and 2024 seasons, which he has played after India's loss to England in the ICC T20 WC 2022 semifinal by ten wickets, after which, India moved on to youngsters. Virat was only recalled for the series against Afghanistan this year in January, where he scored 29 and 0 in two games.
Virat has also been magnificent for India across all big tournaments, ever since he returned from a break back in August 2022 during the Asia Cup. He had taken a break after months of poor, inconsistent returns with the bat and made an immediate impact in the Asia Cup, scoring 276 runs in five games at an average of 92.00, with a century, two fifties and best score of 122*, then his first century in three years. He ended as the second-highest run-getter in the season.
The 35-year-old took his brilliant form to ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, which he kickstarted with an incredible 82* in 53 balls against Pakistan at a jam-packed Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in a tough 160-run chase. He stood tall at the top of the batting charts with 296 runs in six games, average of 98.66 and a strike rate of over 136. Four half-centuries came out of his bat, but he still could not take his team to the title.
After some fine performances across bilateral cricket, Virat proved his undeniable mettle in T20 cricket with 639 runs in IPL 2023, ending as the fourth-highest run-getter even though his side could not make it to the playoffs.
As the focus shifted towards the ODI World Cup in India that year, Virat scored a century in the Asia Cup against Pakistan, ending the tournament with 129 runs in three games at an average of 64.50 and the trophy in his hands.
The Cricket World Cup in India saw Virat delivering an all-time great campaign, smashing records everyday match-day, including breaking his idol Sachin Tendulkar's record of most runs in a single World Cup and 49 ODI tons. In 11 matches, he scored an unbelievable 765 runs at an average of 95.63, with three centuries and six fifties. His best score was 117, but even then, the gold went to Australia in the final.
Now with a 741-run IPL, Virat has proved himself as a batter to watch out for in the T20 World Cup. Across these big tournaments, he has made 2,846 runs at an average of 71.15, with eight centuries and 23 fifties. His best score has been 122*, which came against Pakistan in the Asia Cup last year.
Since his comeback in Asia Cup 2022, he has scored 3,007 runs in 59 international matches at an average of 58.96, with 10 centuries and 17 fifties. His best score is 186. Including his IPL numbers, he has made 4,387 runs in 88 matches and 92 innings, at an average of 58.49, with 13 centuries and 28 fifties.
With T20 WC coming up, Virat's numbers across all the format look encouraging and all hopes are on him to deliver a title-winning campaign for India.

Brandon King scored an unbeaten 82 and skipper Rovman Powell blasted a quickfire 50 as West Indies defeated England by 10 runs to take a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-five T20 international series in Grenada on Thursday. West Indies opener King produced a superb knock which included eight fours and five sixes from 52 balls as the hosts recovered from a perilous 54-4 to finish on 176-7 at the National Stadium in St. George's. England, who won the toss and opted to bowl first, were restricted to 166-7 in response after a disciplined bowling performance by the hosts.Sam Curran top-scored for the tourists with 50 off 32 balls, but England were always struggling to reach the required run rate against the West Indies bowling.Alzarri Joseph finished with figures of 3-39 off four overs, while spinner Gudakesh Motie frustrated England's batsmen with an economical 1-9 from four overs."I think it was important having lost so many early wickets that I stayed as deep as possible into the innings," man-of-the-match King said afterwards."It was very important for me to stay there and build partnerships. We're playing well and everyone's playing with confidence. They might not have got runs today but another day it will be another guy."England captain Jos Buttler, meanwhile, was left to rue the explosive latter part of the West Indies innings after a positive start by the tourists bowlers."It was a few many runs more than we could have restricted them to," Buttler said. "They had a couple of big overs at the back end which pushed the score up, but only losing by 10 -- there's plenty of ways we can find those 10 runs."Earlier, King's unbeaten knock received support from Powell, who caught the eye with a swashbuckling cameo that helped West Indies post a competitive total. The West Indies captain's half century came off just 28 balls and included five sixes and three fours. The highlight of Powell's knock came in the 16th over, with Powell mauling Curran for 30 runs which included four sixes.Adil Rashid was the pick of the England bowlers with figures of 2-11 off four overs.West Indies lead the five-match series 1-0 after beating England by four wickets in the opening T20 in Barbados on Tuesday. The third match of the series takes place in Grenada on Saturday.(This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.)Topics mentioned in this article

The Impact of IPL on World Cricket: A Game-Changer
The Indian Premier League (IPL) burst onto the cricketing scene in 2008, promising a new era of cricket entertainment. Over the years, it has not only revolutionized the way cricket is played but has also significantly impacted the global cricketing landscape. This article explores the profound influence of the IPL on world cricket and provides answers to some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about this game-changing tournament.
The IPL's Economic Revolution
The IPL's most immediate and apparent impact has been on the financial aspect of cricket. It introduced a franchise-based model that attracted major investments from corporate giants and celebrities. The players' auction became an annual spectacle, with cricketers commanding astronomical sums. This shift in the economic paradigm has translated into higher incomes for players and created a lucrative avenue for retired cricketers and young talents alike.
Global T20 Talent Pool
The IPL opened doors for international players like never before. Foreign cricketers, who once only represented their national teams, could now participate in a league that featured the world's best. This cross-pollination of talent has elevated the skills and exposure of players from various cricketing nations, fostering a more competitive and dynamic sport.
Faster, Shorter, and More Entertaining Cricket
The IPL's T20 format has significantly accelerated the pace of the game. It has popularized aggressive batting, inventive stroke play, and innovative bowling techniques. Cricket, once known for its endurance, strategy, and test matches spanning five days, has now adapted to the modern viewer's preference for shorter, high-intensity encounters. The result is a more entertaining, action-packed version of the sport that appeals to a broader audience.
Development of Young Talent
One of the IPL's most understated impacts is its role in nurturing young cricketing talent. The tournament provides a platform for emerging players to showcase their skills alongside international stars. Many talented youngsters have risen to prominence through the IPL and subsequently earned national team call-ups. This exposure to top-level cricket at a young age has contributed to the emergence of fresh talents and a more competitive international arena.

Harry Brook Takes Centre Stage: A Thrilling Encounter in the Ashes Test
England and Australia are all set to begin their game in the third test match of the Ashes 2023 this Thursday. The game changer, Harry Brook, will be found batting in the middle position to improve England’s chances of winning the remaining test game. Follow DaddyNews247 for the latest cricket news online.
Australia, the all-time champions, have already won their first two games and are aiming to win all three of the last three games of the Ashes in 2023. England, who have struggled in the ongoing series, has made some minor changes to their 11-player team to increase their winning chances in the next series. Also, they have changed the position of Harry, which increases England’s hopes of winning the next game.
Harry Brook, the England cricketer, had participated in the Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Brook, a right-handed batsman, made his debut for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 2016 and has been a regular member of the team across formats. He has played in domestic competitions such as the County Championship, the One-Day Cup, and the T20 Blast.
Brook is known for his aggressive batting style and has the ability to play attacking strokes. He has shown promise as a middle-order batsman and has been considered a talented prospect in English cricket.
Brook has captained the England Under-19 cricket team. Under his leadership, the team reached the quarterfinals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup held in New Zealand in 2018. In first-class cricket, Harry Brook has played for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Also, he had scored over 2,000 runs in first-class matches, including several centuries and half-centuries.
In the ongoing Test tournament, Brook smashed the scoreboard with 132 runs at an average of 32 within two test games of the Ashes 2023. He made a half-century in the first inning of the second test match.
If we look at the Ashes series, England has always struggled a lot to win over the Champions, Australia. However, Australia won most of the series as compared to the England team. And also, they are hoping to win the Ashes title this season as well. If you are willing to take all the cricket news updates online, visit DaddyNews247.
