i think with lena, why emily is so perfect for her and why they fit so well together is that emily looks just deep enough past the Tracer persona to the woman underneath. it was something she saw in lena since the hospital bed where they met for the first time for real, with emily peering seemingly directly into her soul. it made lena very uncomfortable at first, but it was addictive at the same time, something about being seen as a human and not a superhero ( or supervillian ) since before the slipstream was so important to her.

conversely, lena provides a very turbulent kind of stability to emily that she doesn't get often. they can often go weeks with barely talking, but at the end of the day, they both come back together in stolen moments between the crime and the violence for quiet bouts of love. emily struggled a lot with finding something permanent with her career as a reporter and journalist; previous partners would insist that she be home, that she couldn't take x dangerous contract or she can't be away for 11 whole weeks, that's impossible!! and it made it difficult for her to find something stable enough. lena has a lot of the same responsibilities and she gets it like nobody else does
