Steven Lim Appreciation Week: Watcher-era Steven
We are celebrating Watcher-era Steven and I want to talk about Hidden Narratives for this day of Steven Lim Appreciation Week!
From the description: “Steven Lim speaks with Asian American leaders across industries about how the coronavirus has impacted our community.“
There are six episodes and one of them is also on youtube. Keep in mind that these episodes were created in March/April 2020. More on that at the end of the post.
Quick disclaimer, I am not Asian American and it would be inappropriate for me to lead any kind of conversation about this podcast; therefore I attempted to keep this relatively surface-level. But I have to admit that I got carried away with this pretty quickly and I am not sure if I stayed in my lane. It was meant to be a short, appreciative post but it got out of hand - if I overstepped boundaries, please let me know.
A warning, this podcast deals with heavy and difficult topics, including racism, grief, pain, people losing their businesses, people hurting. It is also very focused on people coming together and how they can help each other - but these topics are still not easy. I still wanted to write about it because I think that Steven deserves all the appreciation in the world for his work.
The first words that come to mind when thinking about this podcast are “heart” and “dedication”. It has a lot of heart - and despite the not always happy topics, it is such a wonderful, beautiful podcast. You notice the hard work Steven put into it, the passion, the care.
In the intro of the first episode he said he was nervous when he made the podcast but that he hoped that people liked it because it would make him feel good. He explained where the idea came from: His friends talked about how the virus effected their livelihood, and he felt hurt and helpless. And he realized that he could share their untold stories.
Episode 1: How Coronavirus Shut Down A Restaurant in 24 Hours
In the first episode, Steven talks to his friend Deuki Hong, chef and owner of Sunday Hospitality Group, whose restaurants shut down in March 2020. He talked about the emotional impact of things happening so fast, trying to keep his employees safe and worrying about his team, having to question a lot of things he had been taught, and having to deal with the uncertainty.
Steven mostly asked questions and listened. Deuki Hong had to make some difficult decisions, and Steven was never judgmental about it - the podcast allowed for a very honest conversation about a very difficult situation.
The first episode very much was about trying to look out for each other, and that is a sentiment that continues throughout the entire podcast.
Deuki Hong said near the end of the episode: “When people are hurt, they just want someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on, whatever that is, so be that person, just be kind, cause yeah, there’s a lot of hurt people right now.”
There is a GoFundMe set up for the team called Sunday Family Dream Fund. It is still open and has not reached its goal - the first episode of Hidden Narratives came out in March 2020 and the last donation to the GoFundMe was 8 months ago, so I am not really sure what the current state of affairs is. (I will come back to this at the end of my post.)
Episode 2: Why This NYC Restaurant Is Staying Open In A Pandemic
Steven mentions in the beginning of the second episode his “close emotional connection to the food industry” and that it is one of the reasons he started his podcast with two stories from two different restaurants. He also wanted to look at the topic of keeping the restaurant(s) open vs. closing it from two perspectives, and says that he does not know if there is a right or wrong answer.
Steven talks to Jimmy Ly, chef and co-owner of Madame Vo and Madame Vo BBQ. Jimmy Ly made the decision to keep his restaurants open. Steven started the conversation with: “Jimmy, thank you for sharing your story and I hope that those listening can gain a little more compassion, a little more empathy and a little more understanding.”
I found it touching that Steven’s first question was “How are you doing?” - it was asked in a way that allowed for an honest answer. This is also something he continues throughout the podcast, and it is very obvious that Steven is a very thoughtful and considerate person.
Jimmy Ly talked about his decision and for him, too, it is about his staff and his obligation toward them - the wanted to take care of them. Steven summed it up with “It is a choice for them between their livelihood and their safety”.
He talked about the measures they took to keep their staff as safe as possible and about adapting to the situation as best as they can.
Jimmy Ly said, if somebody on his team contracted the virus, he would shut his business down. It was obvious that none of the decisions he had to make and has to make are easy. They also talked about how Asian owned business were hit the hardest, and the drop in business for many.
The end of the episode got emotional - Jimmy Ly talked about how people who had to close their small businesses would most likely not be able to open them again. He said he and many others worked hard and that it is unfair that they could lose everything.
Steven talked about the impact Madame Vo had on him and that he could tell that Jimmy Ly cared about his restaurant, staff and customers and the food and that he poured love into it. Jimmy Ly said that Madame Vo means family to him.
The episode description includes the link to the Madame Vo website - Madame Vo Kitchen is still open while Madame Vo BBQ is “temporarily closed”.
Episode 3: FBI Warns Asian Americans Of Racist Outbreaks Due To Coronavirus
In the third episode, Steven talks to Benny Luo, the founder and CEO of NextShark, about the surge of racism against Asian Americans. He said despite growing up one of the only Asians in his school and being attacked for it, he has never seen so many Asian Americans being attacked in his life before.
From the description: NextShark is “one of the leading sources of global Asian and Asian American news”.
Benny Luo talked about the cases of racism against Asian Americans rising and that him and his team work the hardest they have ever worked in the history of the company to be able to report the stories.
He also talked about the impact of being confronted with those stories regularly - that it is psychologically draining but that his team feels a responsibility to do this work and that he is proud of his team.
Benny Luo told about someone writing to the team about the momentous moments happening for Asian Americans in the past years - and how it felt like it all came tumbling down. He said it is hurtful but that he also hopes it will be a time in history where the entire Asian community will come together.
But he also highlighted the good - there are people doing important work, in the medical field and in other fields, and it is important to be proactive - and these stories should be covered too.
Steven called the conversation “enlightening and therapeutic”. Benny Luo said to Steven: “You’re a creator, you’ve been a representative for us, being an Asian face on a really really big platform and (...) you doing interviews like this with me and you speaking up, I mean, those things have a lot of impact so no matter what it is, I think that you’ve made a big contribution in helping advance us forward.”
Here is the NextShark website.
Episode 4: On Andrew Yang And How Proving Our "American-ness" Won't End Racism
The fourth episode deals with the controversial op-ed by Andrew Yang that advises Asian Americans to show their American-ness to combat racism. Steven said that he was hurt by his words but also by the way Andrew Yang was treated as a result.
In the episode, Steven talks to Taylor Weik, a Japanese-American writer who wrote an article in response to the op-ed. From the description: “Taylor shares more context on why Yang's call-to-action was dismissive to the history of Japanese-Americans and details the negative impacts of Yang's article on the Asian American community.“
In his reflection of the episode, Steven said he did not know how to feel when the article came out - he did not agree with Andrew Yang and he thinks what he said was harmful but people also dismissed all of Andrew Yang’s previous accomplishments. Steven said he can understand the outrage. He said that he thinks that Andrew Yang can learn and that they can grow as a community.
It was clear that this was a difficult topic for Steven but he did his best to have a balanced and fair conversation and to not condemn.
Episode 5: Why American Healthcare Workers Aren’t Safe From The Pandemic
In the fifth episode, Dr. Shuhan He, an emergency doctor and the co-founder of GetUsPPE.org, talks with Steven about the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers.
They had a conversation about what exactly PPE is and why it was so hard to get. They not only talked about the importance of PPE in hospitals but also in nursing homes. Another topic was the importance of wearing masks.
Steven said: “A lot of people are grieving and (...) I’ve been feeling a lot of pent-up sadness and I don’t know how to channel the energy.” He asked how people can help.
Here is the link to Dr Shuhan He’s organisation GetUsPPE. Once again Steven mentioned people coming together and doing good.
Episode 6: Should Churches Gather During a Pandemic?
The sixth episode is very personal to Steven - his Christian faith is the most important thing in his life. He talks to Pastor Drew Hyun, pastor and leader of Hope Church Midtown in New York City. Steven attended Hope Church when he was still in New York.
They talked about churches gathering - Pastor Hyun’s churches are meeting remotely. He said that people were missing connectivity and that’s why they decided to make services interactive and using Zoom instead of having live streams. They also switched their style of services to a style that would allow more interaction.
Pastor Hyun said what makes the situation so painful is that people share the collective grief but are still physically isolated. Steven asked how people are doing spiritually - Pastor Hyun said there was a hunger, and that people are starting to think about faith and life and God.
He said they would not be gathering because they want to be a loving community - a loving community would serve the vulnerable, deliver food to the elderly, raise money for small businesses, serve non-profits. He wanted to lean into love and generosity.
Steven talked about the challenges with his own faith - why would God allow such a devestating thing? He said he can at least channel all the energy of grief, and that giving back has been therapeutic for him. He also mentioned that churches are now more accessible than ever.
They talked about some churches not being willing to stop gathering in person - Pastor Hyun said it is a grief to him and that the most loving thing that churches can do is not to gather.
Again, the end of the episode got emotional - Steven asked how Pastor Hyun personally was doing and he told about how he tried to support the restaurant of a friend and walked out of it crying. He said it would be easy for him to fall into despair and cynicism - but that he clings to the thought that God will do something. He talked about people suffering and how hard it is to watch - and that the situation is challenging.
Steven said he would keep him in his prayers. Pastor Hyun said: “Thanks for what you’re doing and I think it’s beautiful - you’re telling the stories of pockets of light in the midst of what’s happening.”
In his reflection, Steven said that he had been struggling with the situation every day but where he can find joy and peace and confidence is God and the belief that God has a plan for him.
A few closing thoughts: I admire Steven’s dedication. I think this quote from the end of episode 3 sums it up: “I spend my evenings editing this, it’s not part of our overall business plan and probably, you know, we’re losing money from it. It’s not supposed to be my priority. But I’ve been given the green light by my co-founders, by my head of development to continue making this show.”
That’s incredible hard work right there. And it deserves to be recognized.
The podcast was created in the early stages of the pandemic. I don’t know how the people who shared their stories are doing now, about a year later. I would love to have some updates - I thought about doing some research myself and create sort of a follow-up but, again, I don’t know if I am the right person to do it.
To conclude this already too lengthy post, I want to return to the main themes that could be found in all episodes: Coming together, helping each other, creating support, being kind, channeling negative emotions into positive actions, making positive changes.
That’s what Steven is doing with this podcast and with the rest of his work, and it is very very impressive, commendable and inspirational.

Local Handyman Services: Choosing the Right One for You
If you live in a larger town or city, there can be a number of local handyman services to choose from. The quality of work and of the customer service they deliver ultimately comes down to the individual who is in your home, be that person an employee, partner in a handyman service, or a lone handy man. But there are differences you can anticipate in the many types of handyman businesses out there. Let's consider the likely candidates you will run into
here are many handyman franchises that a business owner can buy. The most successful of these franchises are larger handyman companies with lots of glossy advertisements, trucks or vans with full-body graphics, and can have many employees. Like any franchise local handyman services, much of the work is done for the franchise owner, he or she simply plugs in the different marketing tools and advertisements that are supplied to them in their franchise package and get to work finding employees. This does make the job easier than starting a business from scratch, particularly in a field which they may not be that familiar with. The downside for them is they must pay for all of these bells and whistles, just as with any franchise. This leaves them with a lot of overhead and a small profit margin. In growing their company and employing more workers they start to make money, however the temptation is there to charge a lot for any and all home repairs. If you've ever gotten a number of bids for a given home maintenance project, you've probably been amazed at the range of prices. The handyman franchise will likely be at the higher end of the spectrum here.
The advantage to using large franchised home repair services is they are likely to be able to get to your project very quickly, if they have a number of employees. This can be a big deal if you have an emergency repair to be handled and relatives coming in for a visit. As a helpful tip, talk to the salesman or owner about their employees. Find out who the best guys are. Not all handyman are created equal, and with any given handy man service they will have a couple-three guys who are top-notch craftsman, the rest will be average to good, and one or two who you'd just as soon not have in your house. This is a generality of course, but is pretty consistent with many construction, property maintenance or home repair companies. A few quick questions will tell you who their best guys are, and when you can get them scheduled to do your home repair. If those guys are booked up, then it does defeat the purpose of going with a larger, multi-employee handyman service.
The next option you will find is the smaller company built up from scratch with the owner doing a lot of the work, or with maybe one or two workers. Or this may be the owner and a helper. The advantage to you here is there is a greater sense of accountability with these smaller home handyman services. If there is a problem you won't get 'lost in the shuffle' in getting things handled to your satisfaction. This may be as simple as a quick conversation to clear the air about any confusions, but with a larger company even this can turn into an ordeal.
With a smaller two or three-man operation, asking about their 'best guy' is no longer an issue. Handyman companies of this size either do good work or not. This is determined by the owner. If he is a quality-minded craftsman he will expect this level of work from his help. A handyman service of this size has nowhere near the overhead of a handyman franchise; chances are you will get a better price from them, however even with one employee this creates a drain from the income of the business owner. He has to keep his guy busy and keep him paid, or he'll be quitting, or finding jobs from other sources and thereby become difficult to schedule, so this will be a priority for the business owner. However he probably has a family to feed as well, so needs to make a solid income himself. His prices may be a bit higher.
Next we have the lone handyman. He is a one-man-show. You can get a real mixed bag here. At the low-end is the guy who just wants enough work to keep him in the bar every afternoon. At the top of the scale is the perfectionist craftsman who does not like working for or with others who don't share the same level of professionalism in doing home improvements, even with something as simple as cleaning up when they are done. As far as professional handyman services go, the individual handyman will have the lowest overhead and business expenses. If he is an expert home repair specialist he will probably charge a rate that matches his level of skill, however with probably very low operating costs, his handyman rates will be at the lower end of the scale.
In dealing with any handyman repair service it cannot be stressed often enough that you should get references from each business when you are trying to find a handyman, then call the people on that list. This little bit of homework need not be as difficult as it sounds and can save you from enormous potential headaches. The larger the home repair project, the more this factor applies. A call to your local BBB will weed out the bad eggs, but actually talking to the happy customers of a handy man service will give you a great deal of confidence that you are making a good decision, and talking to other customers may give you ideas of other remodeling or home repair projects you may want done around the house.

What is Sustainability and How Can We Achieve It
When trying to define and understand sustainability, Earth is one of the best places to start, as it has been able to adapt and thrive through a variety of changing conditions and environmental threats. The main reason for this being its dependence on three main components, solar energy, biodiversity, and chemical cycling. The Earth's ability to maintain these three characteristics throughout time is what has led it to become such a sustainable force. However, these components of sustainability the Earth has relied on for so long have recently come under threat due to the destructive actions of humans. As made evident by the UN Millennium Ecosystem Assessment human beings rely on the services of Earth's ecosystem throughout their everyday life. The ecosystem provides us with food, raw materials, fresh water, and medicine. It regulates the quality of our air and soil and even provides us with many spiritual and psychological benefits. Despite all these benefits human beings continue to subject the Earth to extreme stress. One of the leading causes of this damage is humans using up the Earth's resources faster than it can produce them (Fig.1).
Figure 1: Degradation of Natural Resources
This could be through things such as lumber companies cutting down millions of trees or fishing companies overfishing. Both of these practices lead to things such as deforestation and species loss, which can be extremely detrimental to Earth's biodiversity. Our use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases also places extreme strain on the Earth by contributing to mass pollution of our natural resources such as water, soil, and air. Furthermore, many of the plastics we use in our everyday life release poisons into the environment that affect not only the wildlife but the nutrient cycle. As explained best in the World Scientist Warning to Humanity, "Our massive tampering with the world's interdependent web of life—coupled with the environmental damage inflicted by deforestation, species loss, and climate change—could trigger widespread adverse effects, including unpredictable collapses of critical biological systems" (Kendall 1992). Therefore, our actions are not only taking a toll on the environment but could, in turn, lead to our destruction.
Another critical factor to consider when talking about sustainability is one's ecological footprint. An ecological footprint is a measurement of the amount of land and water needed to supply a population with the necessary renewable resources, while also maintaining the ability to recycle the waste and pollution produced by those resources. Scientists usually take this ecological footprint of what one would theoretically need and compare it to the resources on Earth that we actually have (biocapacity). If the ecological footprint is larger than the biocapacity that population is said to have an ecological deficit. The US is one of many places with an ecological deficit a fact that is evident in my own ecological footprint (fig.2). According to my results if everybody lived the way I did we would need three Earths to produce the necessary amounts of natural resources. Furthermore, May 1st would be the day when we used up more of the natural resources than the Earth could provide. This result was extremely shocking to me and put into perspective just how detrimental the way we are living can be to our planet. I knew that the way we were living was harming the environment, but I honestly didn't realize the extent of this damage.
Figure 2. My Ecological Footprint
After finishing the readings, it became apparent to me just how destructive our actions can be on the environment, and it is evident that we need to focus on finding a reasonable solution. This solution, however, should not just be focused on the sciences but take into account ethics, economics, and politics (fig.3). The answer to our issue of sustainability is not as simple as using less plastic but is much more complicated than that. In the World Scientist Warning to Humanity, they urge people to limit our amount of environmentally damaging activities and to protect the aspects of the Earth's ecosystem that we rely on. However, I don't think this is the most effective solution for our current situation. I don't believe that all people would change the way they live because it is damaging the environment. One of the best examples of this could be those big companies who are profiting the most from the draining of Earth's resources and are also the biggest culprits of such activities. Take, for example, lumber companies who benefit from cutting down millions of trees a year. They are not going to stop cutting down all these trees, because they are profiting from it. The same can be said for big oil and fishing companies. While it may be true that everyday citizens could be taking action to limit their damaging activities, the same can't be said for these big companies who cause the majority of the problems.
Figure 3: The Principles of Sustainability
Therefore, I think a more effective solution would be to focus on solutions such as full cost funding and finding win-win solutions. Full-cost pricing would tackle the issue of individual people and their environmentally damaging actions. I think one of the major problems is people don't realize how damaging some of the products they buy can be to the environment. Therefore, through full-cost pricing consumers would become more aware of the harmful impacts of these products. Additionally, increasing the prices of these hazardous products would limit sales of that item. Furthermore, I think it's also essential to decrease the cost of the environmentally friendly products because many people do want to buy these products but can't afford them because of their high prices. Regarding the harmful ways of these big companies, I think looking for win-win solutions would be the best solution. Like I said previously, these big companies are not going to stop these harmful activities that they are profiting from. Therefore, politicians must work closely with these companies and try to make some type of compromise. It could be something like the LEED certifications here in NYC, where buildings that meet specific, environmentally friendly design standards get benefits in return. Another idea I believe to be important in solving our issue of sustainability is biomimicry. As explained before, the Earth and nature are some of the best examples of sustainability. Therefore, we should study and learn from those who have successful master a sustainable lifestyle, whether that be through studying the lifestyle of organisms and mimicking their most effective strategies or modeling new and modern technology based on their actions. Regardless I think it is important to turn to and learn from nature and the organisms that live within it, as they are perfect examples of how to live a sustainable life.
Question: What do you believe to be the most important issue surrounding environmental sustainability that must be tackled first in order to create substantial change?

Collide: Chapter 1 Crash into me.
COLLIDE Part 1: So I thought I would try and write my first ever story. Having been inspired by so many writers on here. @ao719 @blackcatkita @bobasheebaby @fluffy-marshmallow-heart @flowerpowell I could go on but those guys have been my main inspiration to get up and write.
Characters belong to Pixelberry.
So this story is RR where Tariq is not found and Liam marries Madeline. I wanted to think outside the box in this one. So hopefully it develops well enough for you all. There is a main character death in this storyline. I’ll likely just write this up in three parts.
Collide Part One-The Crash. 1793 words.
“I can’t go back with you!” Riley exclaimed. In her NYC apartment she readily abandoned a few months before to follow the man of her dreams to a country she had never heard of; now here he was sitting with her on her couch, his piercing blue eyes mirroring the look of devastation in her own eyes. “Either way if I stay or go back with you...you’ll marry her!” The tone of Riley’s voice was devoid of hope, she knew time had run out.
“…come back with me!...” Liam’s voice was breaking “I can….” The words failed to materialise, he knew failing to find Tariq in time was the end of all hope they both had. “Please” Liam pleaded, “we can still be together.”
“What as your side piece?” Riley shot back. “I want to be with you….out in the open….no sneaking around….letting everyone know your mine….and I’m yours…..can you guarantee that???”
“I’m sorry….I have responsibilities…..the crown…..” Liam tear filled eyes fell to the ground knowing in order to give Riley the relationship and life she deserved he had two choices. Breaking off his engagement to Madeline or abdication of the throne.
The first option now too late, the wedding shower has taken place and in Riley’s home town no less, there is no reasonable reason the public would accept to break off his wedding to a noble to marry the American girl who caused such a scandal. Then the second option having been discussed with Riley in the Italian blue grotto cave….Riley had made him realise he would never abandon his people.
“I know….and I would never ask you to choose me over your reign…I love you so much….your kindness…your courage” Rileys voice trailed of her hand touching softly at Liam’s cheek….”but I can’t go back”
With one last painful kiss, Liam nodded he rose from the sofa and left Rileys apartment. Riley sat frozen and in shock not moving from the same spot she sat for hours, she cried so much and so hard she literally felt her heart break. She felt she couldn’t breathe, whereas in reality she was breathing extremely fast, the room spun around her before going black.
Three years later….
Liam sat in his office finishing off his endless pile of paperwork for that day. Sighing he looks out his window. It was past eight and had now gone dark. What a beautiful evening for a walk and lose himself in the maze he thought. Since the wedding three years ago, Liam had preferred the sanctuary of his office than leaving it, decreasing the possibility of spending any time with Madeline when she was at the Palace. This room he thought of especially as escape room as Madeline has been talking of producing the much needed heir to the throne. Liam had been avoiding any aspect of sexual contact with Madeline since the wedding and he did not have any desire to start now. Even if she did have a point, the crown does need to produce an heir. Thankfully, she wasn’t going to be at the Palace this week. Madeline had been heavily involved in a charity opening launch lately. Nevertheless, he did not miss her presence or crave any knowledge of where she was or what she did. Madeline had her life and work and he had his.
There was a knock at his office door. “Come in” Liam responded.
“Your Majesty” Bastien entered nodding his head to Liam as he entered the room.
“Bastien” Liam smiled as his trusted security advisor came into the office.
“Sir…” Bastien face looked grave as he informed Liam “We’ve received a call from the Cordonian Ambassador at the American Embassy.”
“Oh! What’s happened?” He questioned
“The information still sketchy but it’s Her Majesty, Sir”
At his moment Liam felt confusion…”Madeline….what information? why would they call about her?”
“They have reported her Majesty, one male security guard and one other female passenger were in a car, when it crashed off the freeway. Sir”
“How bad?” Liam asked
“It’s bad, Sir” Bastien replied “One reported Fatality”
“Do we know who?” Liam asked his heart was pounding. This was not news he was expecting to receive….. ever. Madeline was not his favourite person, but she was Queen of his people. He had respect for that role and how she played it.
“They have been unable to confirm that at present, the scene and injuries were quite extensive, Sir.” Bastien answered. “However, what we do know that it is a female fatality and 2 passengers appears critically injured Sir, emergency services are still on the scene”
“Bastien, have the jet ready to go as soon as possible.” Liam ordered. “Yes Sir” answered Bastien.
Liam then paused in thought, “Bastien. Are the press aware of any of this?” He asked.
“No not yet sir, however as time passes the news stories will leak through” Bastien warned. “Right” Liam replied “ we better wake up Regina right and let her know what’s happened, Madeleine is her family after all. Then we will have to break the news to Adelaide either way she will want to fly to America I would imagine.”
Liam pulled out his phone and called Drake and Olivia. He hoped he hadn’t woke up their baby, however as his friend and members of the council he needed their help to work with his press secretary to prepare his press statement of what they know just now and ward off any rumours the fatality is Queen Madeline. At least until he knew for certain. At that moment Regina entered the office, worry etched on her face. “Liam” she exclaimed rushing over to hug him. “Bastien told me about the accident…have you heard any more…..do we know if it’s her yet?” “No, not yet” replied Liam “I am going to call the Cordonian Ambassador at the American Embassy to obtain further information.”
The next two hours passed quickly. Liam unable to receive more useful information from the Cordonian Ambassador, much to his annoyance. However, now the unknown female passenger and male security guard have been cut from the car wreckage and airlifted to hospital. Only trusted palace staff informed of the news moving around the Palace reacting to what was needing done.
Liam was packed up and the plane ready to leave. “Is Adelaide on her way yet?” Liam asked Regina as she came back into his study placing her phone in her bag. “Yes she was staying in the Capitol tonight, she will meet you at the airport” Regina replied. “How is she?” Liam asked, he knew the answer, what mother wouldn’t be a mess at this news. “Not good” Regina responded “but she is focusing on that it may not be Madeline and she may not be involved.” Liam nodded, he thought there was some logic to that thought. At the very least It would help keep her sane during the flight he thought.
Liam and Bastien left the Palace in their SUV making their way to the airport. The private jet was ready to go. Adelaide was already on board. Liam could see her tear stained face straight away. The pain and worry so clear. The normally vibrant and carefree Nobel had the weight of the world on her shoulders right now. Liam walked over and embraced Adelaide who broke down in his strong arms. Ever Stoic, Liam held Adelaide like she would break if he let her go. The embrace was interrupted by Drake and Maxwell who were rushing on boarding the plane with their bags. They stopped suddenly feeling they were intruding on this moment.
Adelaide stepped back her hands holding onto his lower arms and facing gave a half hearted smile to Liam which he returned. Adelaide turned to Drake and Maxwell standing awkwardly at the plane door. “Sorry we didn’t mean to interrupt” Drake said as he continued to walk further into the plane with Maxwell following behind. He and Maxwell embraced Adelaide quickly. “We thought you would need some moral support” Maxwell told Liam as he sat down onto one of the seats. “So Drake called me told me what’s happened so I asked him picked me up on his way here….I hope you don’t mind…..” Liam smiled at Maxwell “thank you Maxwell…and Drake” he said turning to his best friend. “Information is very still slow and sketchy and I am not sure really what is going on”
“Your Majesty, the pilot has clearance from air traffic control to leave”
“Of course Bastien” Liam Answered. Bastien nodded and turned to head toward the cockpit. At that moment Bastien phone rang. Bastien answered and as the caller relayed some information. Liam saw Bastien face visibly drain of colour. Bastien turned off his phone for take off and looked towards Liam. At that moment a member of the Private Jet cabin crew insisted Bastien take his seat. Bastien protested but it was no use, unless he took his seat the pilot would miss his clearance for take off and they would be delayed even more. Bastien gave Liam an apologetic look. Having not know Bastien as long and not as familiar with him Adelaide still in a fog had missed the change in Bastien which Liam had noticed. However, she gave Bastien pleading looks to ignore the cabin crew instructions and tell them all the details of the telephone call. For the moment the information he held would have to wait until the plane had taken off.
Within minutes the Plane had taxied on the runway and took off into the night sky, and into the fate of Cordonia’s future.
The seatbelt light was switched off, and Bastien was on his feet. Walking hurriedly along the aisle towards Liam. Adelaide stops him “what did they say?....is it my daughter?” She asked. “I am sorry they have stated they will not provide any information until a formal identification can be carried out, they have asked that his Majesty would do this” Bastien replied. Adelaide crestfallen nodded tears again running down her cheeks.
“Your Majesty” Bastien nodded towards Liam.
“Bastien……I heard what you said to Adelaide……but what did they tell you? I seen your face” Liam ordered. He was no longer asking he knew this news was significant enough to drain the blood from Bastien’s face.
“It’s lady Riley Sir” Bastien responded.
“What about her?”Liam asked puzzled, his heart racing at the mention of her name. Still….three years later after they last met…..after they last parted.
“Holligan?” Drake rose up on hearing Riley’s name made his way toward Liam and Bastien.
“Yes, Lady Riley Holligan” Bastien answered turning toward Liam “the call was from the Embassy as you have guessed. They have information on the other female passenger……Lady Riley….she was in the car with Her Majesty.”

17. u pick the ship
:/ what if :/ more grungy nyc au (17 is “things you said i wish you hadn’t” lol u love to encourage my angst)
-
Louis doesn’t even change into street clothes after work, just heads out the Met service entrance and directly into the Park, still in his waistcoat and everything.
It’s the sort of verdant afternoon, after the lunch service, that makes Louis feel a thousand threads of possibility, silky in his fist. He makes a left down the path towards seventy-ninth. On a less beautiful afternoon he might take the train down to meet Liam, but it’s rush hour underground and the sunlight up here is gauzy and weightless, birds in the trees, kids shouting and laughing on the lawn. Louis undoes his tie as he legs it across the seventy-ninth street transverse, where horses are ambling along towing carriages.
The five of them - and dozens of their classmates - moved down to the city from Purchase right after graduation, and since then they’ve scattered like sand. Apart from Liam, Louis hardly sees any of them. Zayn’s sharing a cavernous loft in Bushwick, parceled with crumbly drywall into barely private rooms. His living room’s got a quarter-pipe skate ramp built inexplicably into it and three spoiled cats running rampant.
Niall has inherited a room in a rent-controlled apartment on the lower east side: the apartment’s been the home of broke Purchase alums for years - not even Niall seems to know who’s on the original lease. There’s a small back patio affectionately nicknamed “the swamp” which is accessible only via Niall’s bedroom window, and which despite Niall’s efforts towards cleanliness has maintained a consistent frill of cigarette butts and beer caps over its concrete surface. It’s sketchy as hell.
Harry is shacked up in Washington Heights with a ballet dancer and an aspiring Broadway star - Louis can’t remember which ones, their graduating class had such a selection. Their apartment is a fifth floor walkup, and every time Louis is invited over for dinner he has to mentally weigh the benefit of a meal cooked by Harry, which is likely to contain a vegetable and a protein as well as some sort of seasoning, to the detriment of climbing so many stairs after a day spent waiting tables.
Liam and Louis, for lack of other close friends, had ended up in Long Island City, in the basement apartment of a little brownstone off twenty-first, just the two of them. Their last anxious weeks of school spent house-hunting had felt like they might never lead to anything. They were young, and poor, and nobody had wanted to offer them a lease without someone more reliable to cosign. Then Liam had gotten the job he has now, and his salary and adequate credit score had allowed him to sign a lease and, humiliatingly, guarantee Louis’ half as well.
He still has a half hour until Liam’s out of work, so Louis takes himself through the Ramble. There’s a spot - if he can find it - just past the big black tupelo tree, where - yes, that’s it. Louis stands perfectly still and looks up. He’s surrounded on all sides by green foliage, a dappled canopy of leaves. It’s the only spot in the whole of New York City where he can stand outdoors and turn in any direction he pleases without seeing buildings.
Louis has one glorious moment of feeling completely alone before a couple barrels past him on the path, too loud, making each other laugh the way people only laugh when they’re newly in love and would rather be doing something else.
What a shame, Louis thinks, to be at ground zero of gay sex in Manhattan and to be alone admiring the birds and the foliage.
Louis takes a moment to shuck his waistcoat and crumple it up into his bag. He undoes his shirtsleeves and shoves them up to his elbows. It isn’t much, but it does help. He feels marginally less like what he is: a waiter with a forty-thousand dollar arts degree and nobody to kiss.
Maybe Liam will be up for drinks after work, or something. Louis has been stuck on dinner service for weeks, and they keep missing one another.
He makes his way out of the ramble, past the lake and the benevolent figure of Bethesda fountain, and then hurries himself up some. He’s always getting sidetracked when he cuts through the park - none of the paths seem to want to take him where he’s going with any sort of efficiency. It is beautiful, though: families carrying kites and bubble wands and picnic blankets; young lovers holding hands; under their feet the soft palm of the earth. Louis takes a winding dirt path and ends up exiting the park just north of Columbus Circle, only a few minutes late. He can see Liam down the block, handsome in a discount suit Louis had pitched in to get tailored when Liam had been offered his job.
Liam, the only one of the lot of them who’d landed a job at least slightly in his field, doing glorified party planning for the city’s foremost jazz organization. Louis doesn’t know if he’s more proud or jealous. Maybe he ought to just be grateful.
Liam sweeps him up into a big, crushing hug when he sees him. They’re both overdressed, and even as the buildings around them empty and the sidewalk floods with men and women in suits, in breathable silk blouses, in oversized sunglasses and comfortable sneakers incongruous with the rest of their outfits.
“Home?” Liam asks, and Louis nods.
The train is so crowded that they end up squished together against just inside the train car, nearly toppling out at every stop when the doors whoosh open behind them. Liam puts a hand on Louis’ waist to steady him, and the train empties out substantially just before it crosses over into Queens and Louis gets smooshed into an empty seat, Liam standing over him. When the two of them emerge, blinking, into the late afternoon sun, it gilds the buildings in burnt oranges and venetian pinks. Everything - the buildings, the leaves on the trees, one another’s hair - is limned in golden light.
“Let’s go to the bar,” Louis says, turning and smiling at Liam. He’s exhausted, they both are, but he doesn’t want to go home and sacrifice the rest of the evening to inertia. It’s beautiful out, and they’re young, and he has tips in his pocket waiting to be spent on somebody else. “I’ll buy you a drink, anything you want.”
Fifteen minutes later they’re ensconced at a corner table on the back patio of their favorite neighborhood bar. It’s an overlong golden hour; the Manhattan skyline just visible from their table is a romantic and familiar shape. Liam is crushing a maraschino cherry into the bottom of his glass with a cocktail straw, smiling to himself.
“What’s with you?” Louis says, tilting his head to catch Liam’s eye and smiling at him. “Been all distracted all evening.”
In all honesty it’s just nice having him there. The farther flung his friends have become, the more Louis clings to Liam, finds comfort in his reliable presence.
“It’s nothing,” Liam says, still smiling in that way that means he’s trying to keep a straight face. “It’s just - you know that girl at work who does the saxophone seminar at jazz academy?”
Louis does; he keeps a mental catalogue of all Liam’s coworkers, so when they catch up at the end of the day he’s not stuck asking who the principal characters are over and over. This saxophonist is also a recent graduate, a performance major at Carnegie Mellon and new to the city. “Esperanza?” he asks Liam.
“Yeah.”
As the sun sets beyond the skyline, a barback comes around to light the citronella candles at the center of each outdoor table, and Liam is prevented from going on for a moment, so caught up is he in saying thank you.
“Anyway,” Liam says. He clears his throat, then drains the rest of his drink. “She asked me down to Fat Cat this weekend, like a date, so.”
“Oh,” Louis says. He finishes his own beer and points at Liam’s empty glass. “Another?”
It’s a moment later, leaning against the bar and watching a bartender muddle sugar cubes in the bottom of a rocks glass that he registers quite what he’s feeling: it’s disappointment, as cold and solid as an ice cube.
He accepts their drinks and, making his way back outside, puts his mouth to the edge of Liam’s glass; takes a sip. It’s sweet and whiskey-warm. He sets it down in front of Liam and takes his seat across from him, already sorting out the face he’ll need to wear to get through the next question:
“So start at the beginning. What exactly did she say?”

Fix Any Leakage in Sewer Pipes Immediately
Have you observed any signs and symptoms of a leak in your home's sewer line? If so, the scenario is maybe as welcome as a weekend visit from the in-laws unfortunately, you cannot ignore them completely and plumbing problems should not be ignored either.
Even worse, it is important to know if the sewer pipe repair project is going to be an emergency. Here's everything you need to know about sewage system problems, including the best way to fix the problem.
What If I Decide To Leave Him?
If you leave the water line untreated, you only have yourself to blame if the health of your home or family worsens. Damp and mold can cause many health problems, with children and the elderly at risk. That alone should tell you that long exposure is not an option.
Can The Sewer Line Repair Job Be Left For A Little While?
If plumbing repair work is not done on time, it can lead to health and safety hazards, as well as property damage. Therefore, it is recommended that sewer line repair problems be addressed as soon as they are discovered. If the repair is delayed, the problems can become worse and more expensive to repair.
While you probably don’t need the same day service, here are just some of the reasons to call an expert right away:
To prevent further damage to the sewer line and surrounding property
To avoid health hazards from sewage backup or leaks
To prevent inconvenience and disruption to daily routines
To minimize repair costs before the issue becomes more severe
To maintain the integrity and proper functioning of the plumbing system
To ensure the safety of the home or building's occupants.
Also, read about Common Causes of Sewer Backups & Quick Fixes
What If I Decide To Leave Him?

Dealing with problems as soon as possible can prevent damage to property and families. When you leave it, a small crack can lead to mold, infestations, structural compromise, etc. For your health, finances, and mind, it's always better to deal with problems right away.
How Are Pipe Lining Fixes Completed?
Pipe lining is a method of repairing damaged sewer pipes without excavation. The process involves the following steps:
Inspection: The pipes are inspected using cameras to determine the extent of the damage.
Cleaning: The pipes are cleaned to prepare them for the lining process.
Resin application: A flexible liner coated with a resin material is inserted into the damaged pipe. The liner is then inflated to mold the resin to the interior of the pipe.
Curing: The resin is then cured, typically using heat or UV light, to harden and bond with the pipes, creating a new seamless, durable and leak-proof surface.
Re-inspection: The pipes are inspected to ensure the repair was successful.
This method is non-invasive and results in a new, strong and smooth inner surface for the pipes, which can extend the life of the plumbing system and improve its efficiency.
Conclusion
If you think your home's plumbing system needs sewer line repair, it may not be an immediate emergency unless there is a visible leak. However, the problem needs to be solved quickly; otherwise, the property can suffer serious damage.

Up in the air aka glorified waitress
Today it’s been exactly two years since I officially started my cabin crew journey and working for Norwegian Air, hence I‘ve decided to start a blog. Let’s see how it goes..
Below I describe my 6 days‘ trip down route. I hope you will enjoy it a bit and get a little glimpse into my flying world.
I’m talking to a young girl in the elevator; she looks at me in my uniform and says: „Wow, you are a cabin crew? Well, in fact she meant to say : „ Wow you are so lucky, you get to travel the whole world“!
That made me smile, but deep down I thought, hmm that’s a bit of an overstatement.
No, really, many of my friends have a bit biased ideas about this world of flying and what it really feels like to work on a plane. Initially, I was very naive as well, not having a clue as to how I was going to feel on board, how I was going to interact with passengers from different countries and cultures who speak languages that I might not understand. What it is like meeting a different crew every single flight - a bunch of folks who you have never met before, and having to pretend you are proficient enough to provide excellent customer service.
No one can prepare you for the actual flight and being on board. The jetlagg, the anxiety, stress and fatique but with time it all goes away and you get used to it, somehow.
But, on the other hand, who can say they’ve had a steak for dinner in one of the most famous restaurant in Buenos Aires and danced Tango with one of the locals? Or who gets to experience flying in the skies at 39 000 ft every week using a Dreamliner 787 as their office? And getting paid for all the traveling around the world? To sum it up all, I’d say my life is kinda up and down, literally.
This week I’ve had a 6 days‘ trip: London-New York-Madrid-New York-Madrid-London, sounds awful, doesn’t it? It is kind of an odd pattern but since we cover the workload of other bases, we have to be ready anytime for anything. This is aviation! Sometimes you never know where you could be flying next.
28.8./ 8:20 CET- London Gatwick
I meet my crew at Costa coffee at Gatwick and first introductions can begin. There are over 800 crews in Norwegian, so in most cases you will see everyone for the first time, and there is a little chance that you will be flying with someone you’ve already met before. I really appreciate when I see someone I’ve worked with on my previous flights, so there is a slight possibility. I’m feeling a bit awkward, I don’t seem to know anyone. I am not keen on small talk but there is no other choice. The flight crew aren‘t looking very happy today but maybe a smile from cabin crew will cheer them up.
Together we are headed on board and in the forward cabin (PREMIUM) we have a quick briefing before the flight. Our senior assigns positions of the door which we are responsible for. Together we talk through all emergency questions and also discuss first aid topics. The Captain provides us with information regarding turbulences and the flight time, which is the only information everyone’s been waiting for. I’m feeling tired, didn’t have a good night’s sleep , but once the meal service starts, I am ready to go. The flight runs relatively smoothly, we do have an enormous bunch of orders though, which is not ideal, if there are only 8 cabin crew in total. Flights, especially to NYC, are ridicilously busy sometimes.
We finish the service and half the crew can hit the crew rest, which is located at the rear of the cabin. It’s my turn so I can get myself into the little bunk, close my eyes trying to get some rest;this is so far the best part of the flight. If anyone of my readers has ever flown on a Boeing 787 before - please keep reading. You can find the lavatories on the other side of the crew rest and if you see the sign CABIN CREW ONLY , please stay away, this is definitely not a lavatory. You might wonder why I mention this, but 99% of our passengers do try to open our doors and fail miserably.
Anyway, we get to New York city around 1 PM local time (18.00 CET), and since this airport is one of the busiest airports out there we sometimes spend around 45 minutes taxing to the gate and waiting and waiting… (the worst part of a flight)
15:30 local time/ 20 : 30 CET – New York City
Two hours later, we finally reach our hotel in Manhattan; the whole journey from the airport can take up to 1 hour. But we stay in a hotel in Manhattan, so no one complains really. Everyone gets to their rooms and we talk about what to do later. We plan a rooftop bar in Brooklyn, but it starts raining, bummer. I take a shower and a short nap, since later I plan on going to Whole Foods with one of my colleagues. Shouldn’t have done that; after waking up I feel so drained that I am only capable of going downstairs for a pizza at the corner.
The pizza tastes delicious though and I put a Netflix on, unwind and relax. At 8 o´clock I can’t keep my eyes open anymore and I fall asleep. At 2 am I wake up and lie around in bed till 5 am. Thank you jet lag! Being an experienced flight attendant, however, I do have my morning routine. I do a bit of yoga, meditate and head for the coast to have a jog, which works perfect for jetlagg issues. You usually need a buddy who will drag you out of the bed, though. This time I pulled it off on my own!
It really feels amazing to be jogging along the Hudson river at 7 am, passing thrilled New Yorkers with their dogs and strollers, thinking about how awesome it might be to actually live here. After a while, I sit on a bench, listen to music and admire the views over Manhattan and get carried away. I come for a run here every single morning.
Back at the hotel, I go downstairs to have breakfast and meet the rest of my crew. A big breakfast makes me tired once again, so no big plans for today, I’m afraid. But maybe I could manage some shopping in Century 21 and a lunch in Whole foods? ( BTW This place is awesome, just don’t get too carried away, otherwise you’ll be crying at the till.) Later we fly back to Madrid and I desperately long for a good night’s sleep. Tough luck, though.
I play a meditation video to calm me down but it’s pointless.
29.8/21:15 local time( 02:15 CET)- New York City
It’s not ideal to start your flight at 3 am European time, as you can imagine. Anyway, in the world of flight attendants you get used to anything…anything at all. One hour on a bus to the airport, one hour taxing to the gate…man, I am drained. I am sitting on my jumpseat about 50 minutes and there are 3 passengers sitting opposite me.( Cabin crew must smile no matter what, so wakey wakey Magdalena!) Luckily all the passengers are asleep so I can relax. The flight is stress and turbulence free and it only takes 6 hours and 30 minutes, yay. Well, sometimes it is rather enjoyable. Although every flight is utterly different, to be honest. Fatique, arguments with passengers, arguments with crew, fainting passengers, drunk passengers…take your pick. But, hooray, today no one has vomitted on me and I haven‘t spilled any drinks on anyone. Not yet, at least.
30.8/14:35 local time - Madrid
We are thrilled arriving in Madrid. My idea of the upcoming days looks like this: The sun, the pool and chill. I leave my uniform in the hotel room and in the evening I meet my colleagues from Hungary and Poland. Together we set off towards the center of Madrid. The plan is to stroll around the city and get some Tapas and Sangria. We are lucky enough to be guided by one of our colleagues who is local in Madrid.
He shows us a few places of interests. I am mainly excited by the beautiful park called Cuarttel de la Montana, which gives you a stunning view over the city. We can‘t possibly finish our evening in Madrid without visiting the local Chocolateria San Gines, where the best Churros is made. The next day we explore the shopping mall next door, and spend a great time relaxing at the pool and regaining energy for the upcoming night flight.
31.8./18:25 local time
All bags packed and prepared, I am headed down to the lobby to meet my crew. We are flying back to New York City, which I am not really keen on, due to my poor sleep on the East Coast. Interestingly, lately I‘ve preferred flying to the West coast of USA where I don’t have a major issue with jetlagg and sleep.( Though it only took a year and half to get used to all those time differences, haha.) We have a nice flight, the only trouble being that almost 80% of all passengers are Spanish speaking, so we send our only Spanish speaking colleague L. everywhere we can. L. is not that excited about the situation. We have a small issue with a passenger who refuses to give up on her own meal with nuts. Unfortunately for her, we have a passenger on board, who is allergic to nuts and hence it’s strictly forbidden to be eating anything containing nuts. But Mrs. B. is not happy about that and complains that she only eats foods that are vegan, gluten free an organic and we can’t really provide that from our snack bar, according to her. I try my best explaining and offering something else but in the end I have to call my senior. We bribe her with a freshly made coffee which is the only thing she is willing to consume. Anyway, at the end of the flight. Mrs. B opens up her own meal box risking an anaphylactic shock for the poor passenger. Fortunately, nothing happens and her meal doesn‘t trigger an allergic reaction. It really feels utterly frustrating that although we do our best to explain the seriousness of the situation, Mrs. B. ignores everything we say and put the life of a co - passenger at a risk. I think it is outrageous how some people are so ignorant and arrogant. Yet, there‘s so much more a cabin crew can come up against and have to deal with.( I just can‘t really stress enough the importance of working on yourself, your resiliance and patience, to be able to face all those kinds of challenges without ever losing your head and nerve.)
Another situation comes up with a lady complaining about not getting a seat in exit row , where she can hang up a bassinet for her baby during the flight. Since she only speaks spanish, my colleague L. apologizes to her saying that they must have made a mistake at the check in desk and she will have to take another seat unfortunately.
Service is taking ages and is not pleasant at all, no one can understand me, but eventually I am good to go with Vino Bianco and Vino Rosso. Spanish is not that difficult after all.
We get to the Manhattan hotel at around 1 am in the morning, which is 6 am European time. Having an alcoholic beverage goes aside and I am only focused on my beautiful bed on 23rd floor. I am so tired I would happily stay in that cosy warm bed until tomorrow’s pick up. But I forget I am at East coast so I am up at 6.30 heading for breakfast. I don’t feel like running today, apologies Hudson river. After breakfast I feel drowsy again, I roll in the bed and put on some Netflix. I get my lunch in Preta Manger nearby and go back to my hotel room. You‘re thinking right, jetlagg is not an easy beast sometimes.
1.9 /21.15 local tme- 02.15 CET- New York
Here comes the very last working flight of this pattern and we are going back to Madrid, yay, feels like Dejavu. On the way to the JFK airport everyone falls asleep since it takes about an hour to get there and it is quite late in the evening. What is the best thing about night flights? Almost every passenger is fast asleep before the take off, awesome! We have a quiet time in both galleys and the flight only takes 6,5 hours, which is a big plus of NYC flights. Compared it with Buenos Aires, which is about 13 hours from London Gatwick, a bit of a difference, eh?
2.9. /12:59 CET – Madrid
We’ve arrived in Madrid but our flight back to London Gatwick is due in 5 hours. We are lucky enough to have our hotel booked for us so we can refresh and relax for a bit. We don’t operate this flight- it is called DEADHEADING, which means, that we fly as passengers in our civil clothes. We get to Gatwick around 7.30 in the evening and everything seems great. There wasn’t any delay, no baggage was lost, everything is as should be. Around 10 o’clock in the evening I get home and order a pizza and a beer from Deliveroo. Unpacking my suitcase can wait till tomorrow - I fall into my cosy bed and I am not getting out of it for the next 12 hours.
