Translating all the CATS Asia tour (2017) character descriptions!

Admetus, the Considerate cat is a kind cat who protects kittens. He is a thoughtful and easygoing cat.

Alonzo, the righteous cat. A proud and masculine cat. On the outside, he is lively and dynamic, but deep down, he is still uncertain about himself.

Bill Bailey the acrobatic cat is an adolescent cat who specializes in fluid dance moves and acrobatics, and is tough and confident.

Bombalurina, the sensual cat; she is extremely sensual and sexy, especially popular among the male cats. She shares a special bond of empathy with Demeter.

Bustopher Jones, the rich cat is not a Jellicle cat, but he is an aristocratic cat who is welcomed by all, enjoys golfing in his spare time and loves a big feast of delicious food.

Carbucketty, the reckless cat is a feisty cat that often gets into trouble.

Cassandra the Siamese Cat, she has a four-dimensional spiritual world with a mysterious beauty. As the only hairless Siamese cat, she is always confident and maintains an air of elegance and pride.

(4D is Korean slang for someone who has a weird, eccentric personality. They seem to live in their own strange world, often behaving unusually or unexpectedly. Though it may seem like an insult, calling someone 4D is actually considered a compliment, and 4D idols are loved for their weirdness.) 

Demeter, a sensitive cat, she is anxious and irritable about Macavity, always thinking that Macavity is nearby.

Electra, a busy cat, likes to intervene here and there, so she is always busy and distracted. She is an adorable, fluffy young kitten.

George, a braggart cat. is a spontaneous, stubborn and dignified cat always on the alert.

Tantomile & Coricopat, the twin cats. As feral cats they are wild, have excellent cognitive abilities, and have a sixth sense that other cats do not have.

Grizabella, the Mesmerizing cat, was once a beautiful cat and a member of the Jellicles, but she has gone to the world outside of the Jellicles and has gone through a painful and difficult time, and now she is old and shabby. She wants to come back, but is ostracized.

Gus, the theater cat. The second oldest cat after the prophet cat. He was a famous actor in his younger days, but now suffers from palsy.

Jemima, the curious cat, best friends with Victoria. She is a curious, intelligent, and innocent kitten.

Jennyanydots, the Gumbie cat; She always sits around during the day, seeming lazy, but at night she is busy educating the kittens. She is like a mother to the Jellicle cats.

Jellylorum, the kind cat; she always takes care of old Gus and looks after the young kittens. She is a warm-hearted cat.

Macavity, the villainous cat. The mafia of the cats; he is the center of evil, notorious for committing crimes and kidnapping other cats.

Mr. Mistoffelees, the magician cat; he can make objects disappear and reappear. He can perform various kinds of magic and is very competitive.

Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer, the thief cat couple; a playful and resourceful burglar cat couple who are always together and get into trouble, but are also fun and lively.

Munkustrap, the Moderator cat. He protects and cares for the Jellicle members. He has a noble, royal-like dignity and serves as the guardian of all the cats.

Old Deuteronomy, the prophet cat. The leader and ancestor of the Jellicle cats. Wise and knowledgeable, he is respected by all. At the Jellicle ball, he chooses one cat to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and begin a new 'Jellicle' life.

Rum Tum Tugger, the rebellious cat. The most popular Jellicle cat. He has strong opinions and likes to be the center of attention. Like the tree-frog, he's opposed to everything, but his presence alone is very charismatic.

(“청개구리” is an idiomatic term which refers to the Korean folktale story of tree-frog / blue frog. In the story, the young frog causes trouble for his mother by always doing the opposite of what he’s told. If you ask him for sugar he’ll give you salt, if you tell him to quiet down for bed, he’ll make a fuss etc.)

Skimbleshanks, the railway cat. A conductor who lives at the train station. He is an organized cat responsible for everything related to the trains.

Victoria, the white cat. The purest and most innocent cat. She performs an enchanting dance for the first time at the Jellicle Ball.

chappell roan has actually spoken quite a lot about the fact that her persona draws heavy inspiration from drag queens, & on her recent tour her opening acts were always local queens from whatever city she was playing in, explicitly because she wanted to honor drag's influence on her aesthetics! i think a lot of fans want to slot her into this simplistic "non-wlw dni" gently sapphic or whatever pop star role, but she herself is unambiguously vocal about "chappell roan" as a campy gendered performance she's doing

ok since this is like the fifth anon giving me this exact information: you all do realise that saying "my aesthetic is influenced by drag" is not inherently the same as having something to say ABOUT drag. right? like what does the styling MEAN. what is the POINT of the chappell roan persona. to stick with comparisons that are popular on tumblr---marina in her electra heart era, or lana in pretty much any era, are other examples of cis woman pop stars who are doing draggy performances of femininity via which they have something [they are trying] to say ABOUT their understanding of gender or marriage or american nationalism etc. i don't get any analogous opinions of any sort from chappell roan, onstage or when asked point-blank in interviews, and i don't think the fact that kayleigh amstutz is a lesbian, and lizzy grant isn't, is prima facie evidence that chappel roan is doing or saying anything of substance. it's not a moral transgression to be a vapid pop artist but it does make me not care about you, especially if your music already sounds like taylor swift, another performer whose popularity equally baffles me. i swear to god interacting with chappell roan stans is like if i suddenly found out there was a massive rabid fanbase for corrugated cardboard. peace and love

Headcanons: She's an adrenaline junkie and has always wanted to be a racer. Of course she would jump at the chance to race with the reigning champion! Post-canon she goes on to become a champion racing coach

Unpopular Opinion: Aside from her and Rusty's meet-cute (Pfeife für mich is so adorable!), I don't really like the rewrites where she's completely new to the yard. It's more interesting to me when she and Rusty have a bit of history

I Want To Be Like You

my piece for @namingofcatszine! it was an absolute blast to be a part of and i'm so honored to have worked on it with so many wonderful people!

for my piece: i wrote about bomba and electra! in which electra really wants to grow up to be a protector like bomba

The younger kittens always want to see Bomba land a blow; Electra only ever wants to see how she moves. Because Bomba is a big cat, one of the largest among the four Protectors, Electra has always thought it would be hard for her to make finer, quicker movements, but Bomba’s fighting style is smooth and refined. She typically won, but it was not always without a fight.

Electra pays close attention to the way Bomba stays on her paws, putting her weight on her back end, using her tail for balance when she rears up on her hind paws to bring a forepaw down on Alonzo’s head; and how she slides out of the way when the black-and-white tom lunges for her. She moves with grace and ease, and Electra thinks, every time, that she wants to learn how to move like that when she grows up.

She wants to be a Protector, too. Just like Bomba.

She goes to see Bomba afterward, when the sparring is over. The red molly has just finished shrugging out of her spiked collar and is shaking her fur out, scratching at her neck with one hind paw when Electra pops her head in. 

“Bomba?”

“One minute,” Bomba grunts, leaning harder into her hind paw as she scratches. “These collars get so itchy.”

So Electra waits, nervous energy building in her paws, because she’s gotten this far and now realizes she doesn’t exactly know how she’s going to ask Bomba to train her.

Bomba shakes herself out again with a little satisfied huff. “Right,” she says, and invites Electra inside with a wave of her tail. “What can I do for you, love?”

Electra stares at Bomba, her mouth dry, her mind completely blank. She takes a breath. “Ah, well…” she starts and then shuffles her paws in the dirt, searching for the words she wants so she doesn’t look like a complete fool in front of her idol, while Bomba watches and waits patiently. “Ah, I-I saw you skirmishing with the other Protectors this morning, uh, we all did, the uh, the other kittens and I, we, uh, anyway—” She stares at her paws, her pelt burning with embarrassment.

“Electra?” Bomba asks gently. Not pressing, but concerned.

“I want to be like you! I want to learn how to fight like you and the other Protectors, you guys make it look so easy!” Electra pauses, swallows thickly, and continues, “And I wanted to ask…if—if you would train me as a Protector.” She looks up to see Bomba’s eyes widen and her ears prick up. After a moment, the red molly smiles.

“There’s more to being a Protector than fighting, love,” Bomba says, her smile growing wider, and Electra flushes. “But yes, I would be happy to train you.”

Electra perks up, her heart thundering in her chest with anticipation. “Really?”

Bomba nods. “Really. I’ll have to confirm it with Old Deuteronomy,” she says thoughtfully, “But we can still get started. Meet me outside my den tomorrow morning, before dawn.”

“Before dawn?” Electra gasps. “That’s so early!”

“Consider it your first lesson,” Bomba says with a flick of her tail. “Punctuality. A Protector is never late.”

Electra stands, her excitement admittedly dulled by the prospect of being up before the Everlasting Cat closes her eye, but her stomach still turns with giddiness. She shuffles out of the den with a grumble. “Yes, Bomba.”

Two weeks in, and the early mornings have gotten easier, but the tours of the territory are beginning to dull, and Bomba still hasn’t taught her to fight. There’s more to being a protector than fighting, love, Bomba had repeated, as another day of patrol loomed. Electra trails behind Bomba as they trot along a fence, mindful of where she puts her paws.

“Where are we going today, Bomba?”

Bomba flicks her tail. “Just around,” she answers. “This will be a bit of a different route today. Alonzo usually takes this one, but I’ve volunteered us to take it today.” She pauses mid-stride to look back over her shoulder at Electra. “Every Protector should know each other’s routes,” she says, with an edge of emphasis in her voice, as though she can smell Electra’s disappointment. But Electra nods, because it makes sense. She wouldn’t like to be stuck on the same route every day, either.

This particular route, she finds, takes them past Jellylorum and Jennyanydots’s gardens, and they pause each time to chat with the older mollies for a while, before Jellylorum gives Bomba a farewell lick between the ears and Jenny wipes a speck of dirt from Electra’s muzzle.

“You listen to everything Bomba tells you,” the old Gumbie cat says. “She’s the best teacher you could ask for. Now you two be on your way, you have a lot of ground to cover. And be home before dark!”

Bomba gives the mollies a wave of her tail as she climbs the fence, Electra scrambling up beside her. “We will!” she promises, and they’re off again.

Her paws thunder on the pavement as she runs. Electra doesn’t know if Bomba is behind her, how close she is, or where she is, or if she’s broken off to lead the dog away. It had been about mid-morning when they’d gone into the alley. There’d been a scent Electra hadn’t recognized, something sharp and pungent, and before she could ask Bomba what it was, a massive black-and-brown dog, with a growl like thunder, had stepped into the alleyway. Electra had stared, bristling, pressed into the pavement, with nothing but Bomba between her and the dog, until Bomba had hissed, “Run.” And she’d taken off.

Now, she all but throws herself over the fence to Jennyanydots and Jellylorum’s garden,  yowling for help, because if there’s anyone that can help, it’s going to be them.The two mollies jump up in a flurry of panic and voices, both of them trying to get Electra to answer Where’s Bomba? What happened? Are you okay? But she doesn’t have the breath to answer anything in depth beyond giving them a wheezy explanation, “Dog! We—in the alley—dog—Bomba—”

The mollies bristle, ready to go searching for Bomba, when someone calls Electra’s name from the other side of the fence, and the very sound of it makes her heart leap. Bomba!

Sure enough, Bomba clambers over the fence and deposits herself ungracefully into the garden. She doesn’t look all that worse for wear, no fur sticking out in places it shouldn’t, no missing patches, no cuts that Electra can smell, nothing but relief and fear and she’s alive!

Electra throws herself at Bomba, buries herself in the red molly’s thick fur. “Bomba,” she sobs, “Bomba, Bomba, I thought—”

“It’s okay,” Bomba breathes, even as her racing heartbeat echoes in Electra’s ears. “It's okay, I’m okay. The dog’s human called it off,” she says, her voice soft and far away, the words meant as much for Electra as they are for Jenny and Jellylorum. “Are you okay?” she asks, this time to Electra directly. 

Electra pauses to take stock of herself. The adrenaline is wearing off now, leaving her limbs weak and shaky, and making it hard for her to get a firm grasp of Bomba’s fur; her paws are growing sore from the run, but otherwise…she’s okay. She’s alive, she tells Bomba. They’re both alive. 

“Okay,” Bomba breathes, holding Electra closer, even as her own legs shake with the effort. “Okay.” She pauses to catch her breath for a moment, then licks Electra on the head and says, “Remember when I told you there’s more to being a Protector than fighting?”

Electra sniffs and nods, pushing her nose deeper into Bomba’s fur. “Mhm.”

“This is what I mean. Sometimes,” she says gently, licking Electra between the ears with heavy, even strokes, “It’s about knowing when to fight, and knowing when to run. Sometimes you have to run. And there’s no shame in that.”

Another sniff, and Electra leans back, just a little, scrunching her muzzle as strands of Bomba’s fur stick to her nose. “Even you run sometimes?”

“Sometimes,” Bomba answers. “Sometimes.” A smile laces her words as she takes a heavy breath and lets out an airy laugh. “And I certainly did today.”

i was going to say i'm not picky with jemima's designs , but i remembered paris 2015 / that wig exists ... i'll take her 1998 look . that or the new international tour design . i know that may be a hot take , but i personally enjoy it even if it's not the best ever 💛

for vicky , my love , the best girl ever™ , i love pinktoria . i may be biased as the production i saw gave her pink accents instead of gold , but she just looks so beautiful 💞

shoutout to copenhagen 2002 . though i prefer pinktoria , i'd still take golden oreo victoria any day .

for electra , i wouldn't change anything about her unitard . i say that with my whole heart since i don't feel the same when she's made even slightly lighter or darker . freya rowley is and has been my favorite electra visually for a while now , i wish this was ellie's regular makeup and wig .

Matt Krzan is leaving the Asia tour to, of all things, get married. And of course we’re genuinely very happy for him!! But I am So Sad he is leaving, because he’s just *such* a wonderful Munkustrap.

Of course Matt’s been involved with Cats for many, many years – and for the last leg of this tour has been resident director and choreographer. Whether he will continue with Cats after this Tour – I guess we’ll just have to wait for the inevitable Farewell Post. One of many that are going make me cry buckets 😭

I’m sure everyone knows my feelings on the NuMakeup ALW forced on everyone, but my fears about Munkustrap’s makeup for the Asia Tour was completely assuaged by this professional. Look at how *gorgeous* he is!! I’m going to miss it *so much*.

Watching Matt as Munk was fascinating! He is, in many ways, a very aloof Munkstrap. Some of it was staging – he doesn’t join in sensuals, for example. During the pyramid he’s at least one entire Cat’s width away from everyone else (like Tugger, *cough cough*). And with Jo!Griz he was vicious. Never seen a Munk react like he did – lunging aggressively toward her with a terrifying hiss. Intimidating, angry, frustrated body posture – at her, at himself. There's a moment when he hisses at Grizabella that Electra cowers - with Munk turning toward her and curling into himself with shame. It’s *fascinating*. And while he’s gentle with the tribe, he doesn’t go out of his way to be cuddly with them

With one exception. Electra (as played by Sophie Middleton). I have lots of headcanons for Cats depending on the production – and in *this* production Electra is Baby and she is Munk’s Doter 😭. Electra is basically an onstage Swing in this production (I have *thoughts* about that, but Sophie created the world’s most adorable kitten in that role so XD). During Gumbi she doesn’t get to be a cockroach – instead she spends the time on the tire rocking out with Munkustrap (she gets to cuddle up in the JennySuit which Munk wraps around her). Mattstrap joins the tap on the tire *except* for the show when Sophie's family was watching- and then Electra got to join the tap! (and Girls Releve during the Ball).

It still kills me not to see Tugger and Munk in the Jellicle Ball when they are played by dancers. And I was so hoping Matt would jump in like he's done in the past. He didn’t, but we did get a little taste of Copeland when he joins in on the boot when the Ball starts! He’s a beautiful Munk, with the kind of controlled physicality I love seeing in this role, and wonderful to watch the few times he gets to actually dance.

I’m going to miss him So Much. I know the tour only has two more weeks, and my heart is going to break at the end of them. Best Wishes and Congratulations to Matt! Thank you for signing my program and for giving me a Paw Bump during the show. Once a Jellicle *always* a Jellicle.

6. Do they go out often or prefer to stay indoors?

I think, realistically, since this is still the ESC-universe in a way, going out can be hard because they'll be recognized. But, I think when they're together, they do try to have at least one night out because they're both fairly sociable, but definitely ensure that they have at least one night in together. (And not just for the bedroom... though that's certainly involved.)

But it's trying to soak up what domesticity and privacy they can, cherishing those quiet moments together. Cementing their relationship in new, wonderful ways.

11. What’s a song that describes their relationship? Or, what’s the song that they’ve deemed “their” song?

So this is an AU with a playlist, but that playlist is just the most unhinged music possible. Despite that, there are bangers so I'll share a few different flavors of their relationship:

Looking at these, I think what makes them so funny to write is the absolute emotional whiplash of insane balls-to-the-wall almost parody-level sex they have combined with the utterly sincere and earnest romance.

18. What does a date night out look like for them?

When they have a moment to visit one another, I like to think they either go to a cabin in Finland or Bojan takes Jere somewhere camping and scenic. They both love the outdoors, so that - combined with privacy - is an easy choice.

Lots of basking in the sun and stars and laying by the water.

24. What are their favorite places to kiss on their partner(s)? What are their favorite types of kisses?

Everywhere. There is nowhere Bojan won't put his mouth for better or worse. Man shoved his whole head into a chest cavity and kissed Jere's beating heart. If that's not romance, I don't know what is.

Jere kisses Bojan all over as well, but he's noticed he responds particularly well to his neck, the crook of his elbow, the inside of his thighs.

When they're not being saucy though, just little pecks on the cheek, on the lips. Always coming up behind the other one, leaning in with a silly shimmy, going 'smack!' with their lips, and then giggling and bouncing away.

28. What’s something that reminds them of their partner(s)? Do they have anything on them daily as a reminder (a photo, phone background, tattoo, clothing/accessory, etc)?

Due to the distance, and being in the ESC-adjacent monster universe, I think they'd have to keep things low key. So no phone backgrounds or something people could easily spot. But, deeeefinitely lots of stolen clothes, especially from Bojan's end.

He has a hoodie that he particularly loves and can't bring himself to wash.

Jere keeps a polaroid of Bojan from the Nordic Tour :) I like to think they had some yet-untold adventure during that tour in this AU :)

Also re-reading some of the fic now and cackling because I'm so happy you all enjoyed our sopping wet pathetic version of Bojan who had bangers such as:

There’s a definitively wet sound to it that surprises him though, and Jere does a poor job of hiding his comically horrified expression.

Bojan’s hand is slick with sweat. A veritable slip-and-slide of nerves bodily represented. To think that this man — actor, songwriter — who’s been assigned a national heartthrob by the media gets nervous holding hands.

NEON NATURE TOUR: FASHION CREDITS

Step into the neon-lit enchantment of Marina's "Neon Nature" Tour, which debuted on October 12, 2015, in Houston. Celebrating her third studio album, "Froot," Marina graced the cyber garden-inspired stage in collaboration with stylist Soki Mak and a handful emerging designers. Join us on a brief, yet dazzling, exploration of the tour's wardrobe—a kaleidoscope of avant-garde fashion and futuristic flair that left audiences spellbound.

The first set of looks were designed by Paula Knorr, who created two of Marina’s fuchsia, lavender & red lamé looks which were inspired by body movement and the interaction between the material and the female shape.

The Piers Atkinson reign just won't let up! M debuted several custom-made headpieces on stage, including a purple version of his Mega Diamond Ears headband.

With the first look, Marina wore the Emmanuelle wine-red leather pointed-toe pumps with eye-catching pink mink tail from Malone Souliers’ Fall/Winter 2015 collection.

The second look naturally met a more bolder choice. These stunners are Kat Maconie's Paulina metallic red leather platform pumps.

Another designer that hopped on is LA-based Michael Costello, who appeared on the eighth season of Project Runway and the first season of Project Runway All Stars!

"Designing for Marina and the Neon Nature Tour was a great experience. My team met with Marina for an initial fitting and we discussed sketches and fabric options. We wanted something colourful and full of sequins so it could shine on stage. We knew we wanted a cape to go along with the jumpsuit to give Marina that extra flair that she is known for when she performs." Michael said.

Of course, Piers Atkinson also created a custom blue sparkly version of his Hyper Cherries headpiece for the tour.

Bristol-based fashion label Burnt Soul custom-made around 7 different catsuits for our girl to wear!

Designer Robyn Lythe said: "To start with, we put the Froot album to catch the right feel for the designs. We wanted to incorporate the expression of her lyrics with the glitzy electro pop side of Froot. One of Marina‘s fashion icons is Elizabeth Taylor and so we used her as inspiration to create figure flattering hour glass shapes in our cut. More than anything we wanted to capture Marina‘s personality. We added floating georgette fabric sleeves and glittering neon colourful bodies to give her the comic book sass and electric look she‘s famous for. The most "Marina" part of our designs were probably the sleeves. We never work with anything but lycra but we wanted to add something a little softer that would add movement on stage. Marina is so feminine with so much strength and attitude and we thought the combination of the two fabrics were perfectly her."

These looks were crowned with the custom Piers Atkinson “Froot” laser-cut plexi headband (similar design pictured above).

For her Lollapalooza performance in Chile, she combined her pink catsuit with these Delalle Demilune oversized studded round cat-eye sunglasses!

A pair of BEBO chunky silver glittery platform sandals completed the look.

Costume designer Austin Louis Perry was in charge for the "Electra Heart" act costumes!

"Working with Marina and her team was such an excleine experience. To start off with I met with Soki Mak to brainstorm the key features of the show. As a fan of Marina’s music I immediately wanted to design for the "Electra Heart" section of the show. Soki and Marina gave me 5 words as a brief; „Sassy, 70’s, pink glitter rock star“. I then used key reference points trom pop acts like Cher, ABBA and Boney M. The next stage involved meeting Marina and presenting my ideas (which she was so excited about) and from there on we discussed colour options and fabric choices. Seeing how excited Marina was when trying on my designs at the first fitting was just incredible. She loved the capes and the fabrics looked amazing together. Personalty my favorite outfit was the pink glitter catsuit with the heart cut-outs. Seeing fans reactions to the Neon Nature wardrobe on social media and the personal comments and E-mails I‘ve received have been overwhelming. It has been such an incredible journey."

The final two custom looks come from Greek couture house Celia Kritharioti! First one is a gold sequined co-ord set featuring plunging V-neck with nude mesh overlay, while the second set comprises a lavender sequin bustier and matching flared trousers.

And for the final ending of this post, here's the deets to the eyelashes our girl's been wearing throughout the show! Make up artist Colby Smith used the Love Addict mink lashes by Artémes!

He also used products by Make Up For Ever, M·A·C Cosmetics, Armani Beauty, Charlotte Tilbury, Madina Milano and Anastasia Beverly Hills.

I don’t know if I ever told you of this but I saw Marina on the Electra Heart tour, coincidentally like a week after I ended a relationship, and it was a 100% cleansing and transformative experience.

Oh my god!

That’s A LOT to go through in such a short amount of time but I have no doubts it was that cleansing and transformative and impactful. Like just listening to her music when it first came out and seeing the music videos was powerful as it is.

And to have seen her during the Electra Heart tour…I am (more) deeply in awe and also painfully jealous of you now.
