EKO PROJECT WEEK 3
For this week I started by messing around in eko to familiarise myself with the software. It turns out its quite straightforward to use, all i need to do is make a layout of my story and upload the videos, the only thing is getting the videos to loop takes a couple more steps but our teacher went through and also posted a tutorial on canvas that was very helpful.

heres the layout i'm thinking of using.
I have also started the storyboarding process.

CGI - Week 5
This week I finished the last few panel drawings. After this, I edited some of them in After Effects to make them animated. One of the scenes I did already had animation, where the character turns towards their phone. I used After Effects to create the glow of the phone. I was finding this quite difficult, as I was struggling to get the shape layer to look right. I wanted to blur the edges, but I was struggling to make it look right without blurring it too much. I found that the radial blur worked the best and after a bit of tweaking, I got something I was happy with.
After this, I began importing each panel into EKO. This was a lot easier as I had already made the template, so I just had to put the panels in. However, I found that I needed to change the non-animated nodes into videos so that they could be used in the software. I also need to adjust the length of some of the videos, making them longer so that the player has enough time to make the choices. (I had initially made the non-animated videos just 2 seconds long, as this was the minimum requirement in EKO)
In EKO, I created the looping function, which is a useful tool as it allows the player to take more time when choosing their pathway. I found it frustrating that the software doesn't have this as a built-in preset, as it seems like a commonly used function when creating interactive stories. Alongside this, I also added the text and a few of the buttons. I made two of the buttons as customs that I then imported into EKO. Something in the software that I did find useful was the node presets that you could make. I used these for similar nodes, for example after the player chooses whether to do a daytime or evening activity, they are then led to the same animated sequence, but with different options (two for the day, two for the evening). I could apply the saved presets and then simply change the contents of the buttons, which definitely helped me save time.

After I had drawn out and coloured all of my panels I attempted to arrange them in the order that I would put it into with the Eko software we learnt during class. I found it difficult trying to figure out how the story would end and whether I would do as many choices as I had originally planned when I actually put it into the software.
It took me a while to finish all of the panels but I was happy with how they turned out. I tried to stick to the same colour palette all the way through.
I think if I had more time I would have animated more of the panels. However I am happy with the animation I ended up doing.
I found the Eko software quite difficult to use and I didn’t feel there was any online advice for the program, so if I ran into a problem and I couldn’t fix it, and none of my classmates could, then it was somewhat unfixable. For example when I imported the background sound to Eko it worked in the preview, however it would not play with sound when I published it. I could not fix it, however it played with sound when the link was opened on a mobile device, rather than a pc.

The final week was very stressful, between trying to the audio animation project and the eko one i was spread very thin. I found eko as a software very difficult to use and very limiting when i came to customization. It was hard to get the right timing in certain pars as well since a lot of the time you couldn’t modify the node’s timers. In the end I managed to pull everything together and i will say that i’m very satisfied which the overall look and feel of the project. I’m glad i added as many animations as i could because i feel like it flows more seamlessly. I loved hope cohesive it all turned out and while i wish i had time to add specific sound effects in a couple places i think that the soundtrack manages to fill that void.

Computer Generated Imagery: Week 3
Interactive story.
This week I started planning the story body. I went into the software Eko and started adding in points of interests and linking the timeline together. I wanted it to converge at a single point where it’ll transition from 2d to 3d, there will be a choice before and after but this will be the main section. This is what the timeline looked like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then drew out some thumbnails of what i wanted each scene to look like. I had the first designs fleshed out for percy and a guardian that takes him on. I feel like the story is funny and has the right tone im after which is good. The story is finalised and i can now start creating the final designs and making assets.
Tumblr media
I started making percy in maya, this will help me work the character out as he is mostly hard surface. I based his design off of an old cry tv with a propeller on it. Its simple and allows me to project percys face on it. Making the design in maya will also allow me to have a good reference for when i rotate the character over the screen and when he flys around. Next week i will need to start creating 2d assets and finalise the characters.

Next project for the CGI module, was the interactive graphic novel
This project would have me use a website that I hadn't used before called EKO
EKO works a bit like a programming software but it's nowhere near as complex as actual programming software thankfully
This project took me the longest time, I'd say about 4-5ish weeks almost, and it could've taken longer if I didn't make the necessary changes to my project in order to finish it
None the less, this was a fun project to make and I would love to make something like this again
As per usual, there was a prompt which was to choose one of several different world issues and conflicts, and the one I chose was race
I didn't wanna make it light hearted but I also didn't wanna make it too uncomfortable to interact with, so I went with the fun apocalyptic theme

Starting the second semester, we were instructed to create a virtual story that can be used and interacted with by anyone. Using Eko software, a free chrome extension, we were prompted to begin planning a story based on a large group of choices to pick. These include:
Social issues
Education
Technology
Media
Relationships
War and Peace
Environmental issues
Race
Culture
Politics
Social Media Debates
Gender
I chose to go with the technology route, in the day and age of growing AI software - I want to create a communicative talking robot who depends on your answers to assign his role on this planet.

What is Music Technology?
For those of you who are not familiar with the terminology, music technology refers to the devices used to create and play music. It includes instruments such as drums, synthesizers, samplers and sequencing machines. There are many different types of devices available, but some of the more popular and most widely used include those made by Moog.
Synthesizers
Synthesizers are devices used to create electronic sounds, enabling musicians to compose music. They can also be used to create soundscapes and music for live performances. Some synthesizers are analog, while others are digital. A synthesizer is used to control volume, intensity, and frequency of a sound.
In addition, a music synthesizer can alter the wave forms of an instrument, producing a distinctive timbre and pitch. Mixing component sounds can also give an instrument a unique sound.
The first synthesizers were experimental special-built devices. They were built in the early twentieth century by Raymond Scott, Don Buchla, and Hugh Le Caine. These devices were often configured using modularity.
Samplers
Samplers are an important tool in the music industry. They help artists insert themselves into the narrative. A sample can be any type of recorded audio. Some examples include film dialogue, streetcar noise, rain hitting pavement, or even a snippet of a song that was previously played. Using a sample allows musicians to save time and money by recording only what they need, and it also allows them to create their own beats.
Sampling has been around for a long time. Hip-Hop was the first genre to take advantage of this technology. Initially, samplers were expensive and difficult to use. However, as technology advanced, they became easier to use and cheaper to maintain.
Drum machines
A drum machine is an electronic device used to create percussion sounds. They typically have multiple modes, including a song mode, clave, waltz, and tempo adjustments. Most drum machines have built-in effects and can generate patterns in real time.
One of the first programmable devices was the Roland TR-808, which became popular in hip hop music. Its features included a high-end sequencer, and the ability to create your own rhythms.
Another innovative programmable device was the Rhythmicon, developed by Russian inventor Leon Theremin. This was the first programmable drum machine, incorporating multiple wavelengths into beats.
The Eko ComputeRhythm, meanwhile, was the first programmable drum machine with touchscreen controls. The LM-1 Drum Computer, developed by Linn, was also a milestone in the world of digital samples.
Sequencers
Sequencers are rhythmic tools used to program and create melodies, articulations, and effects. They're usually found in a hardware or software form. These may include a piano roll, step sequencer, or even a sequencer that's built into a DAW.
In the early days of music technology, sequencers were often played by hand. However, today, many are programmed. This frees up the hands of the performer to play and manipulate the sound. Using a sequencer can also save time. By programming notes in advance, a performer can play back a musical performance in a different order.
A sequencer's output is huge. Often, it's a "warmed-up" version of the output of a synthesizer. This allows for the production of interesting polyrhythms.
Side chaining
Side chaining is an audio processing effect that involves routing the output from one track to control the level of another. Typically, this is done by using a dynamics processor such as a compressor or an expander. It is a common technique that can be used to enhance the performance of a number of different instruments. The process allows you to keep the lead guitar at the forefront of your mix while minimizing unwanted ambient noises.
While side chaining can be a very powerful tool, it is also a very delicate procedure. It can lead to a muddy mix if not done correctly.
Moog Modular systems
The Moog Modular is a tabletop synthesizer created in 1968 by Wendy Carlos. It's used by artists like Stevie Wonder and Brian Eno.
These synthesizers are very popular as collectors' items. Even small ones can sell for huge sums of money. If you are interested in owning one, you can buy them on the second hand market. But you need to be prepared to do some work.
Unlike modern digital synthesizers, Moog modular systems aren't as easy to use. You need to write down the settings and connections on each module. And they lack safety features and software interfaces. They're also expensive to purchase.

Computer Generated Imagery - week 2
As mentioned in last weeks post, I've been struggling with an idea for this class project. I managed to speak further about this with my lecturer which definitely helped a lot and we worked on brainstorming with my main interests. In class, we were also introduced to using EKO, and I definitely found that using the software opened my eyes to the possibilities of what I can do and achieve within the time frame, as well as the fact that knowing the limits somehow made me feel more creative.
Doing more research into a relationship themed graphic novel, with the main interest being that it remains lighthearted, I thought about doing a fantasy based setting to make it more interesting. I looked into the retro futuristic style of some posters (which I added to a moodboard I am working on), which I found really inspiring for a potential character. To encourage this, I completed my moodboard, and worked on some sketches from here, as well as some basic interactive story planning. I need to decide if I want the graphic novel to be about the character setting up a dating profile, or if the character can choose which character to go on a date with, or if the character can choose where/what to do on a date.
Outside of class, I finalised this a lot more, doing more sketches, working on a basic character turnaround based on features I found interesting in my initial sketches. I also made some storyboards for the planned pathways in my interactive graphic novel. Next week, I aim to do a finalised layout, so that I can clearly see what to work on.

Computer Generated Imagery: Week 1
Interactive storytelling.
This terms first project is an interactive story based in a new software called Eko. This means we need to make a short film with at least one decision in it that can be chosen by the audience that changes the outcome of the story.
We we’re given a few prompts on what to base our story around, and from the social issues:
Education, technology, media, relationships, war/peace, environmental, race, culture, politics, social media and gender,
I chose technology as it is something i feel like i can integrate easiest.
Tumblr media
These are my initial thoughts. I had recently watched ‘Bandersnatch: a black mirror story’ which is also in the same format, but the character becomes aware youre making decisions for him and becomes very eratic, it was an interesting watch but i ultimately thought that 6 weeks weren’t enough to execute a story that complex.
I decided to lean into the computer route, we were made to watch some previous years examples and I though while watching them that the conversation based ones felt very alienating and more like a life sim rather than something INTERACTIVE. The story taking place between the computer and you makes it feel more intimate and interesting, compared to watching in on other characters talking between them.
