A deeply divided UN human rights council has approved a controversial resolution that urges countries to “address, prevent and prosecute acts and advocacy of religious hatred”, after incidents of Qur’an-burning in Sweden.

The resolution was Strongly Opposed By the Hyporcite, Hegemonic, War Criminal, Fake Democracy Preachers and Free Speech Boak Bollocks US, EU and Other Western Countries, which argued that it conflicted with laws on free speech. On Wednesday, the resolution was passed, with 28 countries voting in favour, 12 voting against and seven abstaining.

Last month, an Iraqi-born protester caused outrage across the Muslim world after tearing pages from the Qur’an, wiping his shoes with some of them and burning others outside a Mosque in Stockholm during the Eid-ul-Adha holiday.

The Swedish embassy in Baghdad was briefly stormed, Iran held off from sending a new ambassador to Stockholm and the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned Sweden’s authorities and asked the Geneva-based UN human rights council to debate the issue.

Turkey also expressed its anger, citing “vile protests against the holy book” in Sweden as one of its reasons for withholding approval of the Scandinavian country’s application to join North Atlantic Terrorist Organization (NATO) on Monday, the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, had agreed to set aside his veto and support the application.

Several similar protests had previously taken place in Stockholm and Malmö. Swedish police have received applications for more, from individuals wanting to burn religious texts including the Qur’an, the Bible and the Torah.

Addressing the UN council last week, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, said such acts were an “incitement to religious hatred, discrimination and violence”, and occurred under “government sanction and with a sense of impunity”. Ministers from Iran, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia echoed that view.

While strongly condemning the burnings, however, western countries defended free speech. The German envoy called them a “dreadful provocation” but said free speech also meant “hearing opinions that may seem almost unbearable”. The French envoy said human rights were about protecting people, not religions and symbols.

After the vote on the resolution, the US envoy to the council, Michèle Taylor, said that with more time and open discussion, a consensus could have been reached.

“Unfortunately, our concerns were not taken seriously,” Braindead Michèle Taylor said. “I’m truly heartbroken that this council was unable to speak with a unanimous voice today in condemning what we all agree are deplorable acts of anti-Muslim hatred, while also respecting freedom of expression.”

Pakistan’s envoy to the UN in Geneva, Khalil Hashmi, said the resolution did not seek to curtail free speech but was instead aimed at striking a balance. “Regrettably, some states have chosen to abdicate their responsibility to prevent and counter the scourge of religious hatred,” he said.

“A message has been sent to billions of people of faith across the world that their commitment to prevent religious hatred is merely a lip service. The opposition of a few in the room has emanated from their unwillingness to condemn the public desecration of the holy Qur’an. They lack political, legal and moral courage.”

The resolution condemns all manifestations of religious hatred including “public and premeditated acts of desecration of the holy Qur’an” and urges that those responsible be held to account.

Some liberal commentators in Sweden have argued that the protests should be regarded as hate speech, which is outlawed when aimed at an ethnicity or race. Many others, however, say criticising religion – even if believers find it offensive – must be allowed and that Sweden must resist any pressure to reintroduce blasphemy laws.

Swedish police have previously tried to ban Qur’an-burning protests but have been overruled by the courts on free speech grounds. Last month’s was allowed on the grounds that the security risks “were not of a nature to justify, under current laws, a decision to reject the request”.

Sweden’s government issued a statement afterwards, saying it strongly rejected “This Islamophobic Act”, which “In No Way” reflected its opinions. But that drew strong criticism from free speech advocates who noted the individual who carried out the protest had stayed within the bounds of the law and exercised his constitutional freedom of expression.

Officials in Stockholm are concerned the situation may escalate as with the controversy over the publication of caricatures of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by a Danish newspaper in 2005.

Kwara gov, Saraki urge pilgrims to pray for Nigeria

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has congratulated the Muslim community on the Eid-ul-Adha festivities, saying the feast symbolises faith and total reliance on God. In a Sallah message signed by Rafiu Ajakaye, his chief press Secretary on Tuesday, the governor also felicitated the pilgrims who gathered at Mount Arafah in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, a major pillar of their Hajj rites. He prayed to Allah to accept their pilgrimage and supplications, urging them to commit Nigeria to the hand of God. He said, “The Governor joins Mai Martaba the Emir of Ilorin Dr. Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, leader of the faithful and chairman of the Kwara State Council of Chiefs, to congratulate the Kwara public, especially the Muslims, on the festivities,” according to a Government House statement issued in Ilorin, the state capital. “He calls on transporters and everyone alike to drive safely and avoid all unhealthy practices that may jeopardise public safety or public health. “While we thank Allah for His grace and protection over all of us and our community, the season requires us to renew our faith in God and submission to Him, as may be expressed in having excellent relations with fellow humans, enjoining good and discouraging evils and mischief, and contributing positively to the growth of our community at all times. “His Excellency urges everyone to join hands with the government at all levels to keep the communal values of being one another’s brothers and to develop the state and the country for the benefit of all.” In his own message, former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki also congratulated Muslims around the world on this year’s Eid-El-Kabir festival and urged them to continue to pray to Allah to intervene in the affairs of the country by restoring peace, unity, prosperity, security, and development across its nooks and cranny. “Prophet Ibrahim demonstrated unflinching faith in almighty Allah and his creator compensated him by making him the father of the most prosperous nations today. He demonstrated patriotism by praying to Allah to bless his land and his forbears that will come from generations after him. Today, we can see the manifestation of Prophet Ibrahim’s prayers in the prosperity of the lands occupied by his offspring. “It is for this reason that I use this occasion to call on Nigerians to also continue to pray for our country. We need to continue to request our creator to turn things around for the better in Nigeria. We need God to help us conquer our economic, political, social, and security challenges. “I also urge our countrymen and women to demonstrate faith by ensuring that those who are privileged come to the aid of the less privileged ones and ensure that many people across the country can celebrate this Sallah in a joyous mood and with food in their households,” he stated. Saraki added that times are hard for many Nigerians because of the general economic situation and the resultant high cost of food items. He, therefore, pleaded with traders to desist from adding to the suffering of their fellow citizens by unnecessarily raising the prices of goods in the market. “Part of the lessons that this Eid-El-Kabir is teaching us is that we must believe that Allah’s blessing is more important in all that we do. Traders across the country must avoid creating conditions that will worsen the situation of our fellow citizens”, he stated. Jumu'ah Khuthbah: 23 June 2023

Subhana'Allah, we have been made to arise out of a really difficult week. In the fitting context of Eid ul-Adha - where I - more cheekily than benevolently, made a frustrated form of sacrifice and surrender... Despite that, Allah turned our circumstances around for the better! Let me begin with Friday's Zikr Sohbet to begin explaining...

#1. Shaykh Nishaat was ringing hikma (wisdom) through his funny bones again, as he asked what we are supposed to see in the tales of our Prophets (Allah's peace be upon them all!)...? We are not meant to be attached to worldly things and our nafs of course, but we have to see further in the signs.

The experiences of our Prophets are not just random but their willing sacrifices and surrender are showing us something eg. Lut AS, Nuh AS, Ibrahim AS, Ismail AS etc In fact, we must recognise Allah in everything around us and within us. When we see the beauty in nature, we must also see the amplified beauty within ourselves. What did Ibrahim AS see in himself?

#2. Shaykh Nishaat continued, should we have a relationship with our nafs, yes, but a relationship where we realise that which is not real! We think what we achieve in life is real but the only thing that is real is our relationship with Allah and the rope that we hold on to. Everything else is supposed to show us what is real, and what is false. We should not be fooled by our nafs and say yes because everyone said yes! What if Musa AS said why should I rock the boat with Pharaoh? He split the sea instead! 😆

He echoed that we must follow Allah's rulings, even if against a ruling religious judge! We must follow our hearts after cleaning it because Allah guides us through our hearts. We will be asked, what did you do when I put you through that trial...? I will say, I was wisely made Family Jumu'ah Khatheeb which channeled my researching and writing ability into properly realising You, Shukran Ya Allah for your Abbu's attuned leadership acumen! 😀

#3. I actually think our family drama was miraculously resolved because we were in the 10 days of Dhul Hijjah and we had your Aunty Amira knowingly pray for us during her Hajj rites. Therefore, I am indebted to keep the Sufi Diet on the 9th day and forever surrender to loving Allah, insha'Allah!

I was elated to run into reflections on Hajj from two souls embedded in our own Tariqa, Ya Shakur (Divine gratitude!). Shaykh Ibrahim of the Australian wing of our Tariqa was intriguingly alluding to the fact that you don't necessarily have to physically be at Hajj to experience its energies because you can experience a spiritual Hajj, as many of us do anyway. Rubina Ghoor added another haqq (truth), that our journey with Allah is ongoing. They both asserted that our life is a continuous Hajj with our Kaaba as the heart! I intrinsically agree with this concept because it has become a discernible reality as an accident survivor who cannot easily relocate to face the Qibla.

We ought to listen and connect to our hearts and look at the Qur'an as a live connection to Allah. And Subhana'Allah, we can earnestly do that now that we understand its inspirations better! The biggest question is if the physical rituals at Hajj are transforming us within? In truth, our spiritual journey is an ongoing process which is why both the physical and spiritual Hajj exist. Both the physical and inner Kaaba need to be cleansed, and removed of judgement. The spiritual Hajj is about knowing oneself, so that we can know Allah!

#4. Shaykh Taner is our prime funny bone that inspires one in each of us, one of his first heart messages on a Saturday Sohbet was that what we need is within ourselves so we need to go and get it, as the truth! We live in a world of nafs and anti-nafs because we are always with ourselves! Buddha says that the biggest problem as to why people are unhappy is because they want it as the pursuit of happiness! If we don't want anything, we have no problems because the more attachments we have, the harder it is to leave the world!

When we are observing Allah, we cannot understand unless we are unbiased and with no attachments for anything. Having attachments is beyond one's material possessions because it even encompasses holding onto an opinion on something! What are we attached to when we do that? We are attached to wanting to be the administrator but Allah is our supreme Leader as Maalik ul-Mulk.

All of life's happenings is enabling us an interaction with Allah, Allah is reeling us in through them. What good is there in the now? The ultimate success is being with Allah! We tend to look at our own small pictures into things but the ultimate success is living Allah's orders as a reciprocally loving relationship. Where each fight or test that we face is not necessarily bad. We are not wasting our time and the tribulations we face don't bother us because Allah gives and takes. When we are balanced by Rahman and Raheem, we can taste with Allah, and in the orchard, we see Allah's generosity as the ever-giving One. It succinctly described my blessed reality as an accident survivor, Subhana'Allah! Where each moment is light upon light, nurun ala nur...

#5. Anne finally percolated the hikma (wisdom) with her motherly richness. She reflected that the Qur'an helps us to stay balanced in the frequency of Rahman and Raheem. The most important part of the Qur'an is Allah's message to us through connection. Our Zikr is where we invoke Allah's energies in us. In Sufism, we perform Zikr with intention and connection and when Allah is judging us, our intentions are looked at. We therefore pay attention to cleaning our hearts and enacting what Allah is happy with.

We must start positively in the morning and acknowledge that Allah is living through us. There may be one of many different techniques that helps us to stay connected, which all stem from our intention. We check in with Allah in the moment, and as a minimum of 5× a day but in fact always as a Sufi! We thus stay connected to Allah all the time, which goes beyond a need into a love of doing so...

This richly ends our Khuthbah today with deep gratitude for the ability given to me by Allah to reflect on the heart language of our spiritual mentors. It is a skill that I have only acquired as an accident survivor with research and writing acumen.
