Rise of the TMNT Timeline

Alright, by piecing together some clues from the show and making some educated guesses, I’ve put together a tentative chronology for Rise!

(Note: not all episodes are included, just a couple that either have timeline evidence or are somehow plot notable. This is assuming the canonical episode order is also chronological order.)

[EDIT] Added some more information (namely Splinter’s birthday month).

So. Assuming that the episodes occur in chronological order, we can reasonably assume that the course of the show proper takes around or slightly less than a year.

In Hypno Part Deux, April is going to a homecoming dance; homecoming dances happen usually around the beginning of the school year, in late September or early October. Since she is canonically 15 at the time (she says she’s 16 in Always Be Brownies, which happens after her birthday) and has a birthday that comes after homecoming, that would likely make her a high school junior! That’s not important, just a fun fact. Placing the beginning of the series around August makes sense, then, since it’d be before April started school and during flu season, giving Splinter a good reason for catching the rat flu in Down with the Sickness.

The other solid time marker we have is Snow Day, which obviously takes place during snow season in New York (which is usually December to March). It’d likely be closer to December, since I’d like to imagine that they would have gone out to have fun in the snow as soon as they could have, potentially even at first snow. Since Lair Games comes chronologically after Snow Day and confirms the year as being 2019, we can assume that most episodes that happen before Snow Day happened in 2018 while those after happened in 2019.

Another, slightly more tenuous time marker is Bullhop, where a calendar is shown that says the 21st of the month was on a Sunday; by our previous assumption, this is 2018, so a calendar shows this must have been during the month of October, which falls in line with the rest of our timeline here! Neat. The 2018-2019 NBA season went from October 6 to April 10, so, since Air Turtle presumably showed a late season game with potential for turnaround, early March seems like a fair bet. All of those episodes combined give a pretty good sense of time throughout the series, spanning from probably around August 2018 to Mid-2019. The finale could have happened any time after March and before June (when high school would end, meaning Sloppy Joe wouldn’t have had to be working Draxum’s kitchen). Because there were quite a few episodes that should have happened before the finale, though, I’ll split the difference and say the S2 finale happened in or around May.

Fun detail: by this timeline, April’s birthday is sometime between October and December/January, likely November (seeing as it comes after Bullhop but before Snow Day, and judging by the fall colors of the foliage in Operation Normal which comes directly after her birthday episode.)

As for the brothers, we can assume that they might have different birthdays judging by how in Lair Games, Mikey says that one of his favorite days is “my birthday”; if they all shared a birthday, he might have been more likely to say “our birthday”. They were mutated sometime close to October, but since they didn’t seem to see the date of their mutation as anything special in ELoM, we can assume they don’t celebrate it as their birthday. We know that at the beginning of the show, Mikey is 13, Leo and Donnie are 14, and Raph is 15; at no point during the show do any of them have a birthday, which leads me to assume that they are the same ages by the S2 finale. They COULD have had a birthday offscreen, but since birthdays are a pretty big thing for teenagers, I’d think that if one of them had a birthday it would be pretty noteworthy. I’ll just guess and say they didn’t have one. If that’s the case, then all of their birthdays would be some time between April-ish and August-ish. By the time the show starts, then, they would have already had their birthdays, confirming for us their (probably only guessed anyway but whatever) birth years as 2003, 2004, and 2005. Realistically, Splinter probably didn’t know how much older Raph was from any of the others or anything like that, but the years are still somewhat important for age calculation purposes. I could try to guess their birthday months by saying they might all have wanted a unique birthday month, but that would be complete conjecture on my part (as compared to the rest of this which is just mostly conjecture), and would honestly be more headcanon territory than an educated guess? So for the timeline I’ll just say that their birthdays are between April and August.

Now, reaching further backwards to figure out Splinter’s life timeline!

In Splinter’s memories in E-turtle Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, we see a clip of a teenage Splinter. Said “teenage splinter” looks to be on the older side of teenager, as he seems to have his own apartment and just looks older besides, so I’d place him at either 18 or 19 (leaning towards 19). Additionally, taking a look around his room, it looks like he might be using a Sony Walkman (first made in 1979), and has what looks to be a Star Wars poster on his wall (1977). Additionally, he has a TV in his room that looks to be a Toshiba Blackstripe model that was popular in the mid-to-late 70s. While I can’t tell if he does actually have a walkman or not, I’d probably place this scene as being 1978 or 1979 anyway, so let’s just say it’s 1979. If he was 19 in 1979, that would place Splinter’s birth year as 1960, which is nice and even so I’m keeping it. That would make Splinter 58-59 during the course of the show, which seems to track! He has a birthday in Mascot Melee (the turtles are buying him a new robe as a birthday present), which, according to my episode timeline, puts his birthday around early September.

The flashback of Splinter as a kid is a little bit tricky, since he looks to be about five or six judging by how he acts in the scene? But he’s also holding a Kamen Rider doll, and that show didn’t exist until 1971. I nonetheless place the scene in 1966, since this is a cartoon and hey, maybe the Kamen Rider equivalent came out a few years earlier in this world, who cares. The bottle flip challenge already apparently happened in 2014 here, why not move some other stuff around? This exercise has already had me comparing calendar days, I will not be deterred

In Many Unhappy Returns, the clapperboard for the film “Crouching Shrimp, Hidden Tiger Prawn” in Splinter’s flashback shows that it was 1984 when he first met Big Mama, meaning that he was not only Lou Jitsu by then (at just 24 years old!), but that he had been making movies for at least a few years. After all, he and Big Mama were supposedly inseparable after meeting, and in The Shadow of Evil, it’s shown that Splinter did date around a bit as a star. Assuming that rat dad isn’t the cheating type, that would have had to be before meeting Big Mama. In Fists of Furry, Splinter mentions that he hasn’t seen any of his dojos in thirty years; while he may not have meant literally thirty years on the dot, assuming he’s at least close, that would mean that he was first abducted around 1989 (age 29). At that point, he and Big Mama would have been dating for around 5 years, which seems like a reasonable amount of time for him to wait before proposing. He also would have had time to build up quite a bit of fame as a movie star; the game he had of him looks to be on a system similar to the Atari 2600 and in fact looks pretty similar to the real life game “Kung Fu Master” that came out on Atari in 1987, a year which would have been the prime of his career. Sure, that date works as well as any. After that point, we know he was imprisoned in the Battle Nexus until Baron Draxum kidnapped him in order to use his DNA to mutate the turtles 13 years before The Evil League of Mutants. That would have placed his kidnapping and their mutations at around October of 2005, judging by the monthly timeline of the show. So, Splinter would have been around 45 when he adopted the turtles, after having been imprisoned and forced to fight for ~16 straight years. Dang.

Finally, I figured that the whole deal with Shredder and Karai would have happened at some point in the 1600s as it was 18 generations ago, judging by the number of “greats” in Karai’s grandma title, and if you average out a generation to be about 20-25 years, that lands you in the range of the 15th century. That works especially because Ninja apparently first started becoming a thing in the 15th century, so the timing checks out well enough.

(and, just as an extra fun note for the timeline, the lair games was said to have been going on for 6 years as of early 2019, meaning it must have started in 2014. We see that, in 2014 (year 1 of the Lair Games), Donnie doesn’t have his goggles or battleshell and is instead wearing glasses. In 2016 (year 3), though, he looks about the same as he does in the present, meaning he must have created all his tech that he wears on him (battleshell, goggles, tech bracer) between 2014 and 2016.)

So, the above timeline is a guesstimated and shoved around compilation of all this totally meaningless investigation, typed in a form that makes some kind of chronological sense! I hope that someone finds it useful, or just fun to think about :D

As for the Vampire Academy comic, I don’t actually have many scrapped scenes/edits, I actually only found one XD I tend to plan everything as to avoid wasting time on things I’ll not use, so I guess this was an exception.

This is the full panel that got cut to only focus on Rose’s face, back in chapter I - page 7 (top right). After the wasted time editing the whole thing to just use a bit of it made me rethink how I was doing things, so I plan better now. As for scrapped stories.... oh boy, sit down and have some popcorn XD Since it’s not VA related, I’ll put it under a cut. It’s trying to keep the comic going that is hindering alternate projects, but it’s nothing too new if you fallow my other Tumblr... unless you read to the end.

The NaNo-born HP thing.

Before I started the VA comic, I nearly started a comic about an original story that was born in a NaNoWriMo over 10 years ago. It was a sort of alternate future of OCs I had in a Roleplay in back in the day, set in the Harry Potter universe. I never finished the story - 250 pages in English and 3 chapters away from finishing it to this day =’). Once a year I go back to read it just to feel the cringe.

What stopped me was all the extras I’d have to edit in, mainly cloaks and robes - because everyone had cloaks/robes, dragons (even if only for a chapter... 6 years ago no one had converted the dragons to sims 2 yet) and the hair of the protagonist. So I started VA instead, because it felt easier.

The AU Slice of Life thing.

From time to time, on my reblogs tumblr, I post images from the most “recent” OCs from the last roleplay I was in - I like to roleplay, ok? Once on FB a friend had posted a link to one of those online generators, there was one about generating demons and I tried it out. Funny enough, the very first result I got remembered about me about my character Thea. So I jumped to Sims and tried to make her as a demon, based on what the generator gave me and this was the result:

This was the first pass at the idea, but I wanted a tail and different feet...

And so came the no.2 pass, that I’m still sort of working on in the background. I liked this idea, placing my characters and the characters or my friend in a different setting. I wanted to write that story, but I needed the input of my friend and she doesn’t seem very interested, so I dunno if I’d be able to write a full story, I need her to bounce ideas with. Then I thought to just make slice of life images, the cool parts I have in my head, without having to layout a whole story. Again, problem would be having to edit things in, mainly tails (all tails would have to be hand painted in), feet aaand in the case of one of my friend’s girls, wings would have to be edited in. Oh and clothes. I don’t think finding decent harem style clothes is easy even today.

The I-Was-14-and-Wrote-Detective-Stories thing.

I got my first PC in 1996/7, no internet those days. And after I finished watching the last episode of a Brazilian soap opera about a female detective (A Justiceira), I decided create my own female detective and write stories. I wrote the 1st story in one hour and it only had 7 pages (in which I believed that American female detectives sporting midriff tops and high heel shoes to active work was completely normal). I still have those printed 7 pages XD And the cover I made for the book lol Only one friend of mine has ever lay eyes on those stories. It started all good and well, robberies and murders and stuff, but fast I branched out to human cloning, space travel, time travel, genetically altered wolves, alien abductions, religious/alien cults in Mexico, plane crashes, ghosts and an incident during the Paris-Dakar event... I was a huge X-Files fan at that time and got hugely influenced u_u I had 22 books planed, I wrote from 1997 to like 2003-ish if memory serves. Only finished 11 while the others stand in various degrees of scattered notes. As mentioned before, from time to time I go back to read it all and feel the ultimate cringe and wonder what I was on back in the day. It’s completely insane at times, but maybe with a bit (A LOT) of polish I could make something out of it. If nothing else, maybe remake the book covers in the Sims because back in the day it was only MS Paint and some cartoons on Powerpoint that I stripped and drew over on paint with a mouse to draw the covers and other scenes. It’s hilarious looking back at how dedicated I was, hot damn! I made wallpapers, Win95 desktop themes, Winamp skins, you name it XD That female Detective was the very first of my OCs and I never made her in the Sims correctly, maybe I should look into that because all I have to show for her is this XD Covers ranging from 1998 to 2003 (I only learned about Photoshop in 2005).

So these are my dirty little secrets that I might or might not one day act upon. Here, have a cookie if you made it this far. 1. My first language is probably a mix of Mandarin and English! (Not sure which lol) But after I started going to school, English started taking over and now I've forgotten most of my Mandarin :P I can understand it pretty fluently if it's spoken to me and it's not too complicated but it's a lot harder for me to speak the words myself :P

2. My family still has some floppy disks lying around. I don't think we have any computers that can actually read the disks anymore though. 1.4 MB is REALLY not a lot of space o.o

3. I have one sister and two brothers! I'm a middle child :3

4. I first started playing Tetris when I was in middle school after I read a really cool short story by qntm about it! Then there was a long period of time where I didn't really play any Tetris. Then, around the time COVID started, I stumbled into a bunch of Tetris 99 videos by Suisei and also Doremy on YouTube. And then I started playing more Tetris again :3

5. The first manga I ever read was Pokemon Special (a.k.a. Adventures). I really liked it, but was a bit confused by the plot because I didn't realize that I was reading the "best of" editions, which basically skipped a whole bunch of chapters!

6. Up until last year I did all of my writing in Microsoft Word 2003. But I think my files were starting to get too large or something (or maybe old Word is just buggy) because Word would start failing to save with a "out of memory" error whenever I kept the files open for too long. So recently I switched to Microsoft Word 365 (alumni at my school get it free for up to 16 months after their last term :3)

7. I currently own Nichijou volumes 6-10 but I don't have the earlier volumes ;_;

8. One day when I was in elementary school (around 2005? ish?) it was really super windy. Anyway, my family and I pushed our way to school, and when we got there, all the lights were out. The teacher at the door told us and also other people who were arriving that school was cancelled for the day. I don't even remember what year or month this was but I do remember it was a Wednesday

9. Me when I was in middle school could probably easily beat the current me in any challenge of physical fitness. Mandatory phys ed was actually so beneficial 😮 At my best I could run for like 25 minutes at a decent pace without stopping. Meanwhile the me from a few weeks ago could only run for 3 minutes before I got too tired and had to stop 😢 I should really exercise more...

Hi there, Thank you in advance for helping out! I want to know your advice and recommendation on which company to receive my auto insurance/road service from, and what sort of coverage is recommended. I have been with AAA my whole life because my father advocates highly for them so I have trusted his judgment and experience. But I think they may be ripping me off. I am a 27 year old single female with a good driving record (last accident was back in spring 2005 I believe). I have been gathering quotes for car insurance online on confused and was delighted to see the price down at 615 for once as I have been getting car insurance every year since the age 18 and it has always been over 1000. Hi, I'm 17 in a week & will be starting my driving lessons. I have my theory booked for a few days after & aim to pass in around 6 weeks, depending on the waiting list for the test, having 3-4 lessons a week. I went in, signed the papers for both auto's and the homeowners and was happy. They cancelled my previous auto insurance policies, and charged me my first month. Now, a week later, they are saying due to my previous car being stolen two years ago they can no longer offer me my 100 comprehensive deductible. They can only offer me a 1000 dollar deductible and if I choose not to accept they will cancel my auto insurance. This if frustrating considering my other insurance which wasn't bad to begin with has already been cancelled and I have already been charged my first month so if I don't accept I will have no insurance and my homeowners policy will go up in price. Sorry for the long explanation. I just don't think they should be able to get you in then change things up on you. Is there any law against that? Thanks for your help!!!""

BBC2 @ 0005       The Borderlands (2013) ***

Here's a nifty little Found Footage Horror for your Friday night in. Don't let "Found Footage" immediately put you off. Yes - there is an absolute ton of garbage in this Sub-Genre - that is true - but this scrapes through as one to give a chance to. What we have here is a Vatican sponsored Paranormal Investigation in a rural West Country church. Our team are there to debunk the claims as a hoax. Admittedly its scares are minimal but that doesn't take away from a great tension build in the final act. Some will say it is too little too late - but for this film that had no real release to speak of getting just the Video on Demand release - it certainly holds its own. Fans of found footage films will see its merit. Horror fans may get some enjoyment - for everyone else.... well - give it a try.

C4 @ 0040     Oldboy (2003) *****

The finest film to ever come out of Korea is Park Chan-Wook’s amazing: Oldboy. There is so much to say about this film but I will let it speak for itself. You all should have seen it already and is one of the best films of its kind. If you haven’t seen it then you’re in for a cinematic treat. It is the story of a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years and then suddenly and without reason is released. He has money, a phone and is dressed in a smart suit. Here begins his journey to establish who his kidnappers were and why they did it. It is a truly brilliant story full of reveals and it spirals deeper and deeper into his past. It’s jaw dropping. It’s an elaborate story of revenge and torment, completely gripping and beautifully put together. This is a film not to be missed. The “hammer” scene is one of my favourite single takes in film. Watch this!

I’ve always been a big fan of Michael Keaton and here he pulls out an astounding performance as the green haired, un-dead and thoroughly unpleasant Beetlejuice. A young couple are in a fatal accident and find themselves as poltergeists in their home. As the fail to scare away the new owners of their family home they call upon the crazy striped suited scare monger to help them out. But all is not as it seems. The pace of this horror comedy is relentless and always a delight to watch. Creative, crazy and full of carnage - this is a Tim Burton film we all can enjoy before we got fed up with his insistence of churning out the same old formula. When’s the last time you saw Beetlejuice? No doubt too long ago. Get this on your watch list.  

BBC2 @ 2245       L.A. Confidential (1997) *****

This film perfectly immerses the viewer in both the 1950s setting and the gritty story played out.  It really gets your attention. It’s a thriller oozing with police corruption and who knows what lurks around the dark Noir-ish corners.  It’s a real showcase for quality cinematography, micro second perfect editing and direction to die for.  Its success lies in a combination of all these things, a cast of amazing merit and a story that creeps up on you allowing the viewer to be in the control seat having to work everything out for themselves.  It’s one of those films that withstands the test of time and multiple viewings are not only a pleasure but also add more and more. Highly Recommended.

C4 @ 2100      Room (2015) ****

This unsettling and powerful drama treads carefully with its subject matter and reveals a heart filled story of a 5 year old boy and his mother who have been locked in a room for his whole life. His world is the room and has no understanding of the reasons he is there or the real world outside. Brie Larson plays an amazing role as the mother who makes the decision to reveal certain truths to her son and hatches a scheme to enable her son to escape. This emotion filled drama caught me completely by surprise. I somehow avoided it on release due to the serious subject matter - but when I eventually sat down and gave it my time I was thoroughly rewarded.

Syfy @ 2000       Weird Science (1985) ****

This is quite possible my favourite John Hughes film.  He’s done plenty of brilliant 80’s teen comedies that have all withstood the test of time, but this one really hits the spot. Get out your neon socks, kick back and prepare to enjoy this 80’s saturated comedy. It’s pure 80’s indulgence.  Gary and Wyatt are two rather unpopular teenagers. Failing to be accepted by their peers and the girls at school they attempt to create the perfect woman using their computer. They get a hell of a lot more than they bargain for, as their creation, Lisa, is quite a handful indeed. Lisa continuously puts the boys in uncomfortable and challenging situations in an attempt to make them act like men to boost their confidence. Hilarious, a perfect cast, Bill Paxton as Chet, a childhood crush on Kelly LeBrock… all these things and so much more all come together making this a top notch comedy. No amount of backcombing could ruin this 80’s comedy classic. I dare you not to enjoy it.

Horror @ 2100      Triangle (2009) ****

I’ve always been surprised this film didn’t get more attention. Written and Directed by Christopher Smith we see him really pull out all the stops with this far superior and more complicated story compared to his previous outing Severance. It really shows how he has grown as a film maker. This is a film very difficult to describe without giving too much away. What I can say is it’s a story of a group of 6 passengers on a yacht which capsizes when caught in a freak storm. They come across a large ocean liner and get on board. The Liner is deserted apart from a lone masked gunman… Here the story takes some very interesting turns.

What I will say is Triangle is full to the brim with twists and turns and an excellent performance from Melissa George, Triangle is really fascinating to watch and watch again. It pulls on good qualities from films like “Time Crimes” & “Memento” also with a couple of nods to “The Shining”. Overall this is a very satisfying film you will want to watch over and over and over again.

Syfy @ 2200      Strange Days (1995) *****

Strange Days is a seriously underrated Sci-Fi film. Written by James Cameron and Directed by Kathryn Bigelow this film certainly has the right credentials. It’s packed full of some really stunning action sequences, the story has great depth and an intelligent entry into the Sci-Fi genre. Although made in 1995 and with a story set 2 days before the millennium, it still has a very fresh feel. For fans of Sci-Fi this is a serious must see… For everyone else, the same applies, it really is that good. Ralph Fiennes is brilliant as the morally questionable ex-cop turned hustler, Lenny Nero. The POV shots in this film are masterfully put together. Engaging, action packed and full of thrills. Don’t miss this.
