Okereke elected fellow of World Academy of Sciences

Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke has been elected Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries in recognition of his contribution to science and its promotion in the developing world. According to a statement, Okereke is a professor in Global Governance and Public Policy at the School for Policy Studies, Bristol University, UK, and Director of the Center for Climate Change and Development, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State. It stated that Okereke was a globally recognised leading scholar on global climate governance and international development, specialising in the justice dimensions of the international climate regime and just societal transitions to the green economy. According to the statement, he had a track record of high-impact research focused on understanding and addressing systemic barriers to economic and social inclusion in the context of climate policy and green economy transitions, “He drafted a climate change law in Nigeria, modelling Nigeria’s long-term low-carbon development strategy, designing African Unions’ Adaptation Initiative, and drafting the first-ever national green growth plan in Africa, for the Government of Rwanda,” it said. Okereke said, “I am delighted to have been elected Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries. It means a lot to me because I have always been driven by a desire to highlight the challenges faced by developing countries in addressing climate change while also pursuing economic growth as well as the opportunities to leverage climate action to build resilience and achieve economic growth. “Developing countries face multiple challenges related to colonial legacy and unjust international economic order which work to the advantage of advanced countries.” According to him, approaching climate governance from the framework of justice enables us to tackle, not just the issue of climate pollution, but also the more fundamental question of global equity and fairness needed to ensure that everyone can lead a decent life regardless of where they are born. “This recognition encourages me to continue to work as there is still quite a long way to go to achieve climate justice for the vulnerable countries of the world,” Okereke added. By • Olalekan Fagbade Subsidy removal: Government. begins free transportation service for Workers, Students The Ebonyi government has inaugurated its free transportation system for workers and students across the state to cushion the effect of subsidy removal by the Federal government. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 100-seater buses procured by the state Governor, Mr Francis Nwifuru, was to alleviate the sufferings of the residents in the state following the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal government. Mr. Stanley Mbam, state Commissioner for Works and Transport said during the inauguration on Monday in Abakaliki that the buses, which were four in number, would go a long way in taking workers to their working places. According to Mbam, the buses would be conveying workers and students from Abakaliki to Permanent Site of the state University (EBSU), Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu local government area of the state free of charge. Other routes include Abakaliki-Ikwo, Abakaliki to Centernary City, new government house amongst others. “Now, you can see today we have gathered to flag off free transportation system in the state with this four 100-Seater Buses to cushion the effect of removal of fuel subsidy. It is free,” he added. Mr Fred Nwaogbaga, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, said the buses would be designated at different destinations for workers and students. Mr Oshim Nkwegu, SUG President Ebonyi State University, commended Gov Nwifuru on the initiative and his policies to reduce suffering of the poor masses in the state. It occured to me;

At about 6am in the morning, as I pumped into the bottles, with the background sound of my cooing waking baby and the swish of the cars and buses on Hyde-Parks' 55th street, that it was possible. As a matter of fact we should do it, Kuta can open at least 5 more locations across different states in Nigeria. Rent a place, make a space, hire employees, sign up artists for Open studio and Canvas Club. I mean with the on-boarding project with Universities, I don't see how this won't be a major success. I can imagine someone out there in Ebonyi, or Plateau or Lokoja, saying "I've been waiting for this"

Police arrest fake corps member in NYSC camp

The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a fake National Youth Service Corp member, Ogeh Bethel Chibuife at the Magaji Dan Yumusa Orientation Camp, Keffi. A statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the state, DSP Ramhan Nansel said the arrest followed a complaint lodged at the Keffi Divisional Headquarters by a Staff of NYSC. According to the statement, the suspect was discovered after a head count was conducted on all Corps members undergoing a week’s orientation exercise at the camp. The PPRO stated that the suspect, who was discovered to be a student of Ebonyi State University, Faculty of Management Science and Department of Public Administration gained unlawful entrance into the camp. “She confessed that she was supposed to have graduated in 2022 but had a lot of spillover courses, and in a bid to cover up the lies she’d made to her parents, she went to the market and purchased NYSC uniforms/other items meant for Corps members and sneaked into the Camp to take pictures and send to her parents before nemesis caught up with her. “The Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Umar Shehu Nadada psc, mni hereby calls on all those nursing ambitions to toe the path of these fake corps members to have a rethink as the long arm of the law will catch up with them”, the statement added. By • Olalekan Fagbade Vice Chancellor warns Students against campus pr*stitution, s3x-for-grades, cultism     The Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, Prof Sunday Elom, has warned over 15,000 students of the varsity to shun all forms of campus prostitution, sex-for-grades and cultism. Elom said that the varsity has constituted a committee to look into improper dressing on campus, which will also ensure that the varsity is raided of all forms of crime, adding that any student that is found culpable will face severe disciplinary actions. He made this known while addressing a mammoth crowd at the 11th matriculation ceremony, wherein over five thousand ninety seven (5097) fresh students were admitted into the school for the 2022/2023 academic session, that took place at the varsity premises. According to him: “Be informed that Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has absolute zero-tolerance for cultism, examination malpractices, bullying, ‘sorting’, campus prostitution/sex-for-grades and improper dressing, and we do not also hesitate to sanction offenders accordingly. “We have constituted a committee on improper dressing on campus and any student found dressing improperly would pay a fine of N10, 000 for each offence. So, be warned. Dress the way you would like to be addressed. I wish to assure you of adequate security on campus. “We, however, plead with you not to hesitate to report any suspicious activities, intimidation and harassment of any sort to the Dean of Students’ Affairs, security officers, SERVICOM or any staff of the University for immediate action.
