the version of hotd that exists in my head alicent puts helaena and her in matching mommy & me fits 24/7. hair, jewelry, dresses. you'd think this started when helaena was little and alicent is just clinging to her childhood BUT actually it only starts after she and aegon get married. its a manifestation of both alicent's projection of herself and her youth onto her daughter & a manifestation of her guilt for putting her daughter through the same things she went through. in turn helaena dresses jaehaera and jaehaerys the exact same. there's no underlying psychological reason for this though helaena just thinks its cute :)

Something I noticed about Alicent throughout HOTD is she easily shows affection to Aemond and Helaena but not to Aegon. Do you think it’s because Alicent has favorites ? (I always got the impression Aemond is her favorite)
Hi there 💚
I have been asked this question before, and I think Alicent loves all of her children immensely, but she has a soft spot for Aegon despite how it may seem upon a first glance. Let me explain.
Alicent's relationship with Helaena is protective, tender, and loving because “her girl” is her comfort and hope. I think that Alicent sees her inner child in Helaena and tries to compensate for the loss of her own mother during her girlhood by being the mother she lost for Helaena.
Alicent empathizes with Aemond being the “outcast” of the family since she was feeling like an outcast herself in the family she married into (especially in the beginning, wearing all those Targaryen red and black clothes, trying so hard to fit in). Alicent also recognizes that Aemond perhaps loves her and understands her the most of all her children and she has a strong bond with him.
However, her relationship with Aegon is the most intense out of all of her children. He is the reason of her existence as a Queen, the root and the fruit of her troubles, the manifestation of her trauma and the carrier of her flaws. She sees herself in Aegon, and doesn't know how to connect with him because he reminds her of the unyoked and distorted pieces within herself. Oliva has also commented on the idea that Alicent will go above and beyond to support and protect Aegon. She has chosen him to rule no matter his flaws because he mirrors Alicent with his perfect imperfections.
So she loves Aegon the same way she loves herself: faultily, and with austere frustration.

I need more unhinged mothers and their monstrous offspring.
I need more of whatever this shit is:
"What have you done to me?"
"I gave birth to you."
And also:
"Do you love me?"
"You imbecile."

I find it fascinating that in the Green faction, despite having her views and feelings about the political/dynastic situation very often disregarded by the other non-targ members, Alicent is the go-to person of everyone to have the targ members do something they did not want to do.
Otto will advice and even insult his grandchildren, Larys will plot, etc. But when they need something to be done now they go to Alicent for her to force her children’s hand. Aegon doesn’t want his son corpse to be paraded in the streets? Everyone looks at Alicent so she will make him agree. We need Helaena to participate in the parade? Alicent is the one who goes to tell her she must. She was also the one to convince Aegon to go through with the coronation, etc.
It is even more fascinating considering how she seems to have issues emotionally reaching out to her kids in a way that would touch them (her letting Aegon cry on his own, the several scenes in season 1 in which she spent time with Helaena but we feel a gap between the two, Aemond clearly apologizing about what happened with Lucerys to a sex worker playing a motherly role rather than directly to his own mother, etc.). This difficulty to reach out emotionally could have been used to explain why her children do not listen to her, but it is the contrary: somehow it make them eager to please her, almost eager to obey her. It also ciments the fact that despite having a complicated relationship with their mother, all Targaryen-Hightower kids believes deep down inside that their mother only has their best interests at heart. No one else has that much influence on them.

Okay but there’s something to how the only time Aegon is in like a vulnerable place is with Alicent. Like the rest of the trailer he’s such a smug punk (I love it) and there’s the ones scene of him angrily attacking someone. But he’s back to his sad loser self around Alicent.
Tfw you’re Cool and a King now and the world is at your feet but you still want the comfort and coddling you mommy never gave you.
And even in this scene she’s lecturing him and is as done with him as usual!
When you’d die for your son but you won’t hug him

Assassin: *holding a blade to Alicent* what if I kill her momma’s boy? Picture here, dead in the gutter, and what life would be life without mommy dearest…
Rhaenyra: JESUS CHRIST!
Everyone: what?
Rhaenyra: He’s got an ERECTION!
Alicent: WHAT?
Assassin: *dropping Alicent in shock* what the hell is wrong with you people?! *gets gutted by Aegon*
Aegon: nothing -
Alicent: *beating her son* an erection! The thought of me dead gives you an erection?!
Aegon: no!…. Just half of one…

TW: Abuse, child abuse
(I would like to say, I am not defending anyone’s actions. I also asks that you respect my opinion, we don’t have to agree but don’t be crazy. I am also discussing the show, I know what happens in the books.)
“I have sinned.”- Alicent Hightower
“I do not wish to hear it”- Otto Hightower
Team Green and their family dynamic are so interesting to me. It’s the cycle of abuse that keeps on giving. I haven’t seen a single Team Green member break from this cycle.
It’s starts with House Hightower, in specific, the expectations that are put on Otto Hightower by his family since he became the hand. He is expected to bring the Hightower blood upon the throne and is also the most powerful man next to the King.
He’s strictly religious and despises the customs of the Targaryens, but he stays because he knows that eventually he can use his own pawns (children and grandchildren) to intermix with the Targaryen blood and put Hightowers on the throne. He doesn’t really care for his daughter’s emotional needs, he manipulates her and forces her to act on the houses behalf. He’s constantly plotting on his next move and is honestly maybe one step ahead of everyone else. He doesn’t discuss his plans with his daughter, who is queen. The only time she’s clued in is when he whispers threats of death about what will happen when Rhaenyra takes the throne.
Alicent Hightower is a victim and an abuser. These two things can simultaneously be true. She’s a victim of her father’s abuse and the expectations of being a woman in a world ruled by men. Even when she has power, she never goes against the men who inflict the pain. Instead she uses her power to inflict that same pain onto other women and her own children. We see how she suffers as a victim to further push her father’s ambition and we also see how she’s an abuser. She inflicts punishments on Rhaenyra for simply fighting against the system in place, she hits her children, she isolates them from Rhaenyras children and she constantly tells them that Rhaenyra will kill them all if she takes the throne. She sets the same expectations her father places upon her onto her children, and we see how that affects each of her kids.
Aegon- the son the realm wanted but to Alicent he will always represent her stolen childhood, her stolen innocence, her stolen life she could have had. Aegon was expected to be the perfect prince, a king. Alicent can’t even pretend to comfort him when he’s crying for his dead child. She feels these immense sense of guilt, but she can’t even offer her son a simple act of kindness. She leaves.
Helaena- Helaena is the only daughter Alicent has and you’d expect her to protect her daughter from the very same fate she was put upon. No, instead she finds her own daughter strange. She doesn’t understand that Helaena is a dragon dreamer because she herself never wanted to dabble in the Targaryen customs. She finds Helaena strange and thinks her simple, which is a terribly thing to think of your own kid. She can’t bond with Helaena at all, she tries and fails. She never tries to get to know her children and she gets frustrated when they aren’t acting like she expect them to act.
Aemond-Aemond is a very special case. He would be considered the favorite child simply because he’s dutiful like his mother. Alicent doesn’t have to worry about Aemond because he does as he’s told. He’s the perfect prince. Aemond is the only child (before his eye was taken) that meets Alicents expectations. When Aemond’s eye is taken we really see how resentful he becomes. Alicent can’t even recognize her own son anymore.
Not only does the cycle of abuse continue but we see how the characters also abuse themselves. Alicent picks at her fingernails as a punishment, Aegon drinks himself silly, Helaena shuts down and Aemond becomes resentful. They find ways to not only abuse others but themselves at the same time.
From Otto, to Alicent, to Aegon, to Helaena, to Aemond.
It’s really funny to me because the ONLY reason that Team Green is fighting together is because they all have a common enemy; Rhaenyra. However, even with a common enemy in place they still are fighting amongst themselves. It’s a cycle that never stops turning.
It makes me wonder, what was the last act of kindness that they received?

“you have no ideas the sacrifices that were made to put you on that throne” this is great and all, but aegon did NOT ASK FOR ANY OF THIS. alicent and otto’s plan relies on playing aegon like a puppet. aegon seats the throne merely because he’s the first son, and they will have their power and influence through him. from what is shown, aegon lacks political awareness, diplomatic skills, and foresight—which is no mistake, for alicent and otto need a fool to easily manipulate yet this fool is also king, who’s word is law. it’s a risky gamble on their part. interesting how aegon and rhaenyra are facing a dilemma with their respective councils—both feeling helpless and ignored and unsure of what to do in this war. it’s even more interesting when you realize that both aegon and aemond know rhaenyra was viserys’ true heir, and the green faction has essentially stolen nyra’s birthright. do i think aegon would harm alicent? no. but these scenes aegon has with her is so telling because prior to his rushed coronation, aegon wanted nothing to do with the crown, nor did he care rhaenyra would seat the iron throne. he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place, and aegon, presumably, doesn’t even know where he stands with his mother outside of him being the crown.

Thinking about Clash of Kings, and how Catelyn thinks: He wants me gone, Kings are not supposed to have mothers, it would seem, and I tell him things he does not want to hear, as a parallel to Aegon, Aemond and Alicent.
Aegon who seeks out his mother's advice, and only when she rejects his efforts does he go against her, and then still looks for her, when he is injured and half concious. Because being the king could not replace his mother's affection.
Aemond who rejects Alicent's efforts and advice after killing Luke, who even tells Cole Alicent's love for Rhaenyra makes her weak, who does everything to become prince regent. Because his mother's affection could not replace his need for validation and greatness.
One would reject the title/recognition for love while the other would give up love for the title/recognition.
This is not to say they aren't both fucked up or that Aemond doesn't love Alicent but like. They really wanted what the other had!!! This entire time!! God! I am gonna be sick

The fact that the season is over, and we didn’t get another Alicent x Aegon scene hurt me the most 💔😭 It was so tragic that Aegon left the Red Keep alone, without having spoken to his mother and never knowing how much she worried for him. Never being awake all the nights she spent by his bed. I so wish we saw them interact once more, which would then make Alicent’s sacrifice more meaningful/comprehensible.
Can you imagine Aegon’s reaction when the first thing he learns in S3 is that KL has fallen and his mother aided Rhaenyra in exchange for his head? And Alicent’s astonishment at finding Aegon is gone, (I still like to think that she had warned Larys about what she would do in order to save him)? Or what about Rhaenyra when she finds out that Alicent betrayed” their agreement when Aegon is nowhere to be found, and she can’t kill him?
I know that what we got sets up more tension in S3 with Alicent, Aegon, and Rhaenyra, but I would love one more farewell scene.
