"Part 3 of the 1968 Bouton Rouge French tv show. Featuring the original Fairport Line up of Judy Dyble, Iain Matthews, Simon Nicol, Tyger Hutchings, Richard Thompson, and the late Martin Lamble. Staggering, rarely seen performance, capturing the band in their very early, and now often said best period."

Sandy Saturday's #4:
Fairport Convention's Suzanne
There was nothing wrong with Fairport Convention in the Spring of 1968. They had the best lead guitar player in England, plus two skillful singers, an oddball but talented bass player and a rock steady rhythm guitarist and drummer. They weren't The Beatles or The Stones, but they knew what they were doing and they did it well.
Only two ingredients were missing: songwriting chops and a lead singer who could truly front the band.
The first problem was a significant one; Richard Thompson, who would soon become transcendent in the songwriting department, was still about 14 years old (okay, he was actually 18, but you get the idea) and he leaned on random roommates to write his lyrics. And no one else in the band showed any real songwriting promise.
But in 1968 you did not need to write your own songs. You just followed Judy Collins lead and let Dylan write your songs for you, along with Richard Farina and a very precocious Leonard Cohen. Witness the band's version of Suzanne:
youtube
There's plenty to be said for this version: the band's female vocalist, Judy Dyble, sits it out and lets the strident and angelic Ian Matthews carry the lyric (Dyble would bring her knitting on stage at this point and darn away whenever she wasn't needed). And Richard Thompson's brooding, harsh solos, whenever the choked off electric rhythm gives him room, are something to behold. You want to take him with you, and you want to take him blind...
But the track is not yet timeless. Something is missing. And that something is Sandy Denny.
Go ahead on this Sandy Saturday; lean into the band's version of Suzanne just a few months later when Dyble had been given the knitted boot and Denny had stepped up to claim the band as her own.
Matthews still carries the opening verse, yes, and the original arrangement remains in place. But now, the moment Ian's novelties begin to wear thin, we've got Denny gliding in for the second verse, and there she is alongside Matthews in the final verse as well. Sandy quavers with power and understatement throughout, commanding Matthews to raise his game a giant step. She glows within the track and turns it into big deal art. I trust her perfection with my mind.
youtube
Note the constraint Thompson brings to this later take; he knows he no longer needs to solo under the vocals; he knows he now had a peer in the band, someone to write songs alongside; someone to try and live up to. Like any other sensible male (paging Stephen Stills; Stephen Stills please get a clue), he knows he's stronger when deferring to a true peer.

King Crimson - I Talk To The Wind (Ian & Robert Early Take With Greg Master Vocals)
Ian McDonald and Peter Sinfield’s beautiful ballad had been through a few iterations before the final version that found itself sitting between the chaotic explosion of 21st Century Schizoid Man and Epitaph’s foreboding prophecies on side one of King Crimson’s 1969 debut album. First, there had been the version with Giles, Giles, and Fripp featuring the wonderful Judy Dyble, late of Fairport…

We’re going to start with his one big hit, I Remember You, featuring some great harmonica work by Harry Pitch who taught young John Lennon how to get a sound that ended up on early Beatles tunes. Listed: Tomten
Photo: Tony Kay
Tomten are a baroque pop quartet based out of Seattle, Washington. Brian Noyes (vocals, keys, guitar) and Lena Simon (bass, vocals) (Kairos Creature Club, formerly of La Luz) met in 2008 and began demoing each other's songs at Cornish College of The Arts. Their latest album, Artichoke, is less prickly than the name suggests, drawing influence from the acid folk of the Incredible String Band, Bridget St. John and John Martyn, the lushly arranged soul of the Delfonics and the country pop of Gene Clark. Jennifer Kelly wrote about the disc in the last Dust, noting that “Tomten’s songs billow and swell in that frictionless, effortless way that often indicates great care and craft.”
Here Brian Noyes digs deep into the archives via two compilation series. He writes, “There are two compilation labels that have meant a lot to me over the past few years, Grapefruit Records is a subsidiary of Cherry Red and issue primarily British Psych and Folk, and Cairo releases incredible 1960s-1970s soul comps. I decided to pick five of my favorite tracks that Grapefruit and Cairo turned me onto.”
Jackie McAuley — “Turning Green”
youtube
I was familiar with Jackie McAuley being the former keyboard player of Them and the other half of the amazing and underappreciated folk pop duo Trader Horne with Judy Dyble (Fairport Convention.) But I wasn’t familiar with any solo work he had done. This song instantly stuck with me. I love the string arrangements and stately piano. In an alternate universe it could’ve been at the end of a 1970s Hal Ashby or Robert Altman movie.
Carolanne Pegg — “Open The Door”
youtube
I could listen to this song over and over, it’s so fun. I love Carolanne’s vocals on it, kind of shrill and mystical, like proto-Kate Bush. I also love the cosmic banjo rush during the later chorus and the throaty guitars.
Matching Mole — “O Caroline”
youtube
I’ve always loved Robert Wyatt, but I’d missed out on his earlier group Matching Mole. This is such a sweet and touching song. I love the mellotron and wah guitar and the line — “if you call this sentimental crap, you’ll make me mad.” Gotta love Robert Wyatt’s wooly little voice.
Robin Williamson — Strings In The Earth and Air
youtube
This is the opening track off his 1972 solo record “Myrrh.” Strangely enough, I first heard Dr. Strangely Strange’s cover of it — I love both but prefer Robin’s. Such a haunting and beautiful song. I believe the first half is part of a James Joyce poem. I want it played at my funeral… I also love Mike Heron’s solo record from a year or so earlier, Smiling Men with Bad Reputations. Two over-looked solo efforts from the Incredible String Band.
Heron — “Take Me Back Home”
youtube
Tomten has loved Heron for a long time, so much so that we covered their tune “Yellow Roses.” They are all over Grapefruit Comps, so I wanted to include them for that reason. This song is off their second record Twice as Nice & Half the Price and it is my absolute favorite. It’s such a loose and lovely performance. Makes you wish you’d been hanging out in the house with them having some frothy ales.
Bettye Swann — “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye”
youtube
Bettye Swann has so many killer songs, this one really sticks with me. Great morning song. Love the production and backups too. John Holt has a cool version on A Love I Can Feel as well, but Bettye is best.
Diamonettes — “Don’t Be Surprised”
youtube
Great tune from a somewhat obscure Miami group. Classy strings. They also have another tune I love called “Rules Were Made to Be Broken.”
The Raelettes — “Many Rivers To Cross”
youtube
A fantastic song and so many good versions, Jimmy Cliff and Nilsson… But I hadn’t heard this version until semi-recently and I love the mood of it — somber smokey horns. The Raelettes were backup singers with Ray Charles for a time, and later changed their name to The Cookies.
Eddie & Ernie — “I’m A Young Man”
youtube
I LOVE EDDIE & ERNIE! Their voices together are fabulous, this is one of my favorites. There is an awesome comp called “Time Waits For No One” everyone should go out and buy now!
The Ordells — “Sippin’ a Cup of Coffee”
youtube
A good song for ruminating… Eerie, dreamy and gorgeous.
Various Artists — Strange World
On a final note, there is a compilation by a partner label of Cairo, Pyramid Records that did a release called Strange World described as “Cosmic and Earthly Doo Wop and R&B from America and Jamaica” that if you come across you should absolutely purchase. I probably play it at home once a week, hehe.
