as i don't want to completely hijack this post, i've decided to type out several of the letters in the book letters to sherlock holmes by richard lancelyn green in a post of my own. thank you again to @hesagoodone for the interest; i do hope the rest of the fandom enjoys these, as well! these are the five letters i had added to the aforementioned post but i will be reblogging this a few times over with more, so stay tuned... it's been so very hard to choose my favorites!
under the read-more you will also find a brief history from one of the many people hired to be sherlock holmes' personal secretary during a 50+ year period where 221B baker street was receiving an enormous influx of letters from those that hoped & those that believed sherlock holmes, the great consulting detective, was real—living & breathing.
Dear Reader,
Letters addressed to Sherlock Holmes have been answered by the staff of the Abbey National Building Society for over fifty years and I am the latest to serve as his secretary.
The head office, Abbey House, stands in Baker Street and includes the number 221 which many would say is the site of the rooms which Holmes shared with Dr Watson. The present building was opened in 1932 as the headquarters of what was then the Abbey Road Building Society, but which in 1944 took its present name following the merger with the National Building Society. In 1951 it housed the Sherlock Holmes Exhibition which was arranged by the St Marylebone Public Library as a contribution to the Festival of Britain. The Exhibition included a reconstruction of the famous sitting-room, which won wide acclaim, being visited by over half a million people, including Queen Mary.
Letters still arrive in large quantities, and during my time in office, Mr Holmes has received post from every quarter of the globe. There are fan letters, birthday wishes, Christmas cards (one each year is from Dr Watson), invitations to give lectures or attend weddings. Sometimes he learns that he is the potential winner of a fortune or that he has been specially selected to receive a trial subscription to a well-known periodical, but by far the largest number of letters contain details of intriguing mysteries. He is asked to trace, as it may be, a peanut thief in Kansas or to bring to justice the chopstick murderer of Nagasaki or to end the nuclear arms race. A few bring news of Professor Moriarty some claiming that he has been spotted boarding a train in Neasden or that he is responsible for the theft of a painting from the Dulwich Gallery. Others again wish to know intimate details of the detective's private life. Was he left- or right-handed? Did he dislike gooseberry jam? Did he once wound Mrs Hudson in the foot while cleaning a revolver? And did Mycroft Holmes wear glasses?
These and other questions are hard to answer, and I have to remind his correspondents that Holmes is now spending much of his time in Sussex and is rarely, if ever, on hand to deal with the queries himself. But I know that he appreciates all the kind comments made about him and is touched by the evidence of the high regard in which he is held.
He will always reside at 221B Baker Street, but if the Abbey National Building Society has been able to play its part in sustaining his tenancy then that is a cause for satisfaction. I certainly enjoy the work and could not wish for a better or more distinguished employer.

September 1959 Richfield, Minnesota, USA Dear Sir, Although I have been told that you do not really exist, as have the other members of my English class, I still think that somehow you do. In the hearts of all those who read about your wonderful exploits in the world of solving crime, you do exist, as surely as the typewriter on which I write surely does exist — although my typewriting is a far cry from your great feats of crime detection. I realize you are shy when it comes to a lot of praise, so I will just say that you can never know how proud your readers are of you — that is, all but the detectives who read Dr Watson's stories just to help them solve their own crimes. Dr Watson said that you are — or were, as the case may be — a rather messy housekeeper. But even your messy stacks of news clippings have helped you to solve crimes, haven't they? There are suspicious-looking characters around all the time, and some people think you should come to this country to investigate. I have told them repeatedly, of course, that you are much too busy to bother with the crimes of America when you can help your own country. Well, actually, the reason I wrote is because I want to receive a letter from you so that I will know if you are still living and advancing the detective profession, or if you have passed on the road to happiness. If you are not living, would you kindly let me know? The rest of my English class is anxiously awaiting your letter also. Did you really do all the things that Dr Watson said you did? Some of the crimes and mysteries you solved seem almost impossible. Well, I must leave you to your work. GEOFFREY HAMILTON RHOADES Historical
GEOFFREY HAMILTON RHOADES was born in 1898 in Balham, London, to a middle-class family. His father, Walter, was a senior civil servant and author, mainly of boys’ adventure stories. As a youth, Walter was quite an athlete, both as a runner and a cricketer.
Geoffrey attended Dulwich College where his education involved the Latin language and Roman and Greek culture which included drawing from classical casts. After Dulwich he spent two years at Clapham Art School 1915-17 under the direction of Leonard Charles Nightingale 1851-1941 before serving in the Mercantile Marine from 1917 to 1919 as a naval wireless operator.
On completing his war service he took a portfolio of drawings to show Professor Tonks at the then, most prestigious Slade School, University of London, who accepted him onto the course immediately. His landscapes, figure studies and flower paintings reflect his love of natural history and interest in the classical world.
Later, at the conclusion of his time at the School, Tonks remarked: “You have something which I have not – imagination.”
During the Slade years between 1919 and 1924 he socialized with both fellow students and a number of established artists at Barnett Freedman’s studio off the Tottenham Court Road, among whom were Albert Houthueson, Percy Horton, Charles Mahoney and James Laver who was just beginning his work at the Victoria and Albert Museum (Keeper of Prints, Drawings and Paintings for the Victoria and Albert Museum between 1938 and 1959). During this Slade period Geoffrey met fellow artist Charles Mahoney, they met at the bedside of Barnett Freedman’s during one of Barnett’s serious illnesses.

A fellow student of Geoffrey’s at the Slade was John Mansbridge through whom he met author and architect Christopher Turnor ( MP, JP, DL  1809 – 1886)) and his wife Sarah who were in the process of opening their large country house, Stoke Rochford in Lincolnshire, for summer schools. Geoffrey was invited to go there and make paintings for an indefinite length of time. He stayed for two years (1925-27) painting family portraits, some murals, landscapes and making many drawings. The Turnor’s were very kind to him and he became very much part of the household.
Geoffrey moved back to London in 1928 and was invited to undertake some teaching at the Working Man’s College in Crowndale Road. Founded in 1854 the college was amongst the earliest adult education institutions established in the United Kingdom.  Geoffrey and Charles Mahoney were now living in Kensington Crescent, W14, a charming Regency crescent, now demolished. In 1930 they went on holiday with Percy Horton to Blackmore Farm near Marden in Kent where Mahoney made studies of the orchard for the Morley College murals.

In 1934 Geoffrey married Joan Jenner whom he is reputed to have met at a Royal College Ball, and they remained together until his death in 1980. Joan was in the Ministry of Agriculture with Mrs Horton, both were fond of doing Torquemada and The Listener crosswords and won prizes. Tirzah recalled that visiting Brick House Joan would sing songs in German pottering around the house. Their son, Peter, was born in 1938 while they were still resident in London.

Geoffrey’s reputation must have been high because in 1935 the Tate (Britain) bought his “Winter Afternoon, Chalk Farm” landscape, but, after Peter’s birth and the onset of the Second World War blitz, they moved house to Stebbing in Essex.

Buckinghamshire the Rhoades family made a final move to Cuddington on the Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire border. This change of location was stimulated by the necessity of being closer to Oxford. Percy Horton had been appointed Ruskin Master of Drawing at the Ruskin School, University of Oxford, and had invited Joan to be his secretary there. He subsequently engaged Geoffrey as a tutor at the School and this began a very long relationship with the Ruskin and Oxford for both of them, Joan continued to be secretary with Percy Horton followed by Richard Naish, and, just before her retirement in 1974, Philip Morsberger. Both Joan and Geoffrey were much admired and loved at the Ruskin which was then housed in the Ashmolean Museum.

Rhoades: In Memoriam to Esme 1966
The final phase of Geoffrey’s life was lived happily at Seven Stars, Cuddington with Joan and his son Peter who is also an artist. This concluding period, however, was marred by the tragic death of his sister, Esmee, in a traffic accident near the family home in Balham, which affected him very deeply. He steadily produced landscape and mythological figure compositions in oils and in a variety of graphic media. Joan developed quite a large garden with both horticultural expertise and aesthetic judgement, a lovely foil to the art work of her husband and son. Geoffrey continued to teach at the Ruskin School until his retirement in 1972 and also conducted therapeutic art classes at St John’s Hospital, Stone, through the 1960s. He died, after suffering from cancer, in 1980.

Giacomo Francesco Zuccarelli (commonly known as Francesco Zuccarelli), was an Italian artist of the late Baroque or Rococo period. He is considered to be the most important landscape painter to have emerged from his adopted city of Venice during the mid-eighteenth century, and his Arcadian views became popular throughout Europe and especially in England where he resided for two extended periods. His patronage extended to the nobility, and he often collaborated with other artists such as Antonio Visentini and Bernardo Bellotto. In 1768, Zuccarelli became a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and upon his final return to Italy, he was elected president of the Venetian Academy. In addition to his rural landscapes which frequently incorporated religious and classical themes, Zuccarelli created devotional pieces and on occasion did portraiture. Beside paintings, his varied output included etchings, drawings, and designs for tapestries as well as a set of Old Testament playing cards.
Despite the fame he experienced in his lifetime, Zuccarelli's reputation declined in the early 19th century with naturalism becoming increasingly favoured in landscapes. Turner criticized him in mild terms while confessing that his figures could be beautiful, paving the way for more severe Victorian assessments. In 1959, the art historian Michael Levey offered suggestions for why Zuccarelli held such wide contemporary appeal among the English, concluding that his best work is highly decorative. More recently, since the 1990s there has been a renewed focus on Zuccarelli among Italian scholars, who have given him prominence in several books and articles, and his paintings and drawings are regularly shown in exhibitions.
