Watercolours by Edward Bawden (1903 – 1989, British).
"Edward Bawden (1903-1989) thought of himself as a designer, not an artist. A respected British book illustrator and printmaker, his commercial designs for clients including Fortnum & Mason and Shell, are rightly prized as classics. But as the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London argues, his fine art has been unfairly neglected. The gallery’s new exhibition, which features his paintings alongside his book illustrations, posters and graphic designs, ought to change that. The most comprehensive exhibition since his death, it argues that Bawden reinvented the watercolour for the 20th century.
Bawden is best known for his witty approach to linocut, a printing technique similar to woodcut, which he elevated into a respected medium. But as the exhibition reveals, Bawden was fascinated by watercolour. While he was at the Royal College of Art (rca), Bawden, his friend and fellow art student, Eric Ravilious, and their tutor, Paul Nash, rediscovered the British watercolourists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. At the time – this was the 1920s – the restrained style of artists like Francis Towne and John Sell Cotman seemed refreshingly modern after decades of “blob” and “swash”, one critic’s disparaging terms for the loose style that grew out of Impressionism. In their own work, Bawden and his circle began to combine clean lines and precisely applied colour with stencilling and collage, and to borrow techniques from oil painting such as stippling, where the canvas is dotted with many small specks. In their hands, watercolour drawing went from fusty to fresh."

Fans queued to buy a hardback copy of the Duke of Sussex’s autobiography as it hit shelves at midnight.
Professor Chris Imafidon, chairman of the Excellence in Education charity, who was first in line and picked up three copies, said he wanted to hear the story “from (the) horse’s mouth”.
Sarah Nakana, a surveyor from Dulwich, said she had already downloaded the audiobook as she picked up a copy, saying she wanted to try to “get ahead of the British press and their narratives”.
“It will just be the public getting whipped into a frenzy of anti-Harry and Meghan-ness because that’s what sells – hate sells – they’re monetising hate,” she said.
She said: “When Harry was doing his book, I was like: ‘No I need to just know what his life has been because the British media tell me everyday: ‘This is what it is.’
“And I hardly hear from the guy but I hear from the British press, the royal rota, the royal experts but never from him directly.
“It was just very important for me as a historical record to hear about his life because he’s lived it and that’s why I’m here tonight. This is him, his words, ‘this is what I went through’.
“With the snippets that have been out, I love the honesty. ‘This is the good, the bad and the ugly, this is me. There is nothing hidden, there is nothing told over me.’”
I thought all those totally legit polls from the UK tabloids said that the British publish didn't want to read Harry's book.

hi rhi! what are your favourite london bookshops?
I love Liberia bookshop in Shoreditch, Morocco Bound in Bermondsey, Claire de Rouen in Bethnal Green, Skoob Books in Bloomsbury, Judd Books in Bloomsbury, London Review Bookshop in Bloomsbury, Chener Books in Dulwich, Keith Fawkes in Hampstead Heath (where my friend used to work and Keith is apparently last living relative to Guy Fawkes) and the best imo BOOKS in Peckham (shout out to Peter)
And for the more "grand" independent bookshops and specific big conglomerate bookshops I love Daunt Books in Marylebone, the big Waterstones in Bloomsbury with the window seats and the cafe and of course Mecca also known as The Big Foyles.

London is such a funny city because on the one hand you have places called things like Dark House, Hanging Sword Alley, Bleeding Heart Yard, Executioners Way etc etc and it's like okay yeah very metal, very goth, love it. And then you have like Clerkenwell, Camomile Street, Pudding Lane, Dulwich Wood, Threadneedle Street, Puddle Dock and other places that sound like where a bunch of small animals from a children's book would make their home. Like... pick a vibe

Have you ever looked at something and it reminds you of something completely different? But somehow, oddly appropriate. If you have read Victoria Goddard's books The Emperor's Hands and the sequel, you will know what I mean when I say these amazing pastels by MK Curlionis, at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, seem very familiar...

Susana and the Elders
Artist: Jacob Ernst Thomann von Hagelstein or Nestus Thomann (1588–1653)
Date: circa 1620
Medium: Oil on Copper
Collection: Dulwich Picture Gallery
Susanna and the Elders is a painting that depicts a biblical story about a young married woman who is spied on and falsely accused of adultery by two elders:
The story The story is based on chapter 13 of the Book of Daniel in the Bible. It tells the story of Susanna, a married woman who is spied on by two elders while bathing. When she refuses to have sex with them, they accuse her of adultery and she is condemned to death. Her innocence is eventually proven by the young prophet Daniel.
The painting The painting is a representation of the story, and often depicts the vulnerability of women in a society ruled by men. The painting's composition and Susanna's contorted pose can heighten the sense of disquiet.
Artists who have painted Susanna and the Elders Artemisia Gentileschi and Guido Reni are two artists who have painted Susanna and the Elders.

this morning i got coffee with R + L and chatted about hyper specific queer history politics stuff and then rode over to east dulwich to go to the two bookshops there. bought some crip fiction for me and a weird walks book for R's birthday and a card for him with worms on it, then rode down to south london gallery where the exhibition in the big room felt like walking into a huge fort, the ceiling covered in blue netting, plants peeking through. i devoured a jam doughnut outside sainsbury's before cycling home in the sunshine and it's only 2.30pm but i feel so full. discovering lime/forest bikes has been very liberating as a person w an energy-limiting illness like being able to zoom around town is not something i've ever been able to do int his way before and now i never want to stop

RUSSELL PROFITT - Golden Oldies Chair...
Russell Profitt MBE
Continuing our celebration of the lives & work of some extraordinary #Southwark community activists, this month we’re showcasing the amazing Russell Profitt, Chair of @walworthgoldenoldies
Originally from Georgetown, Guyana, Russell travelled alone when he was just 13 to join his mother in London, she was part of the #Windrush generation. Life was tough & the move traumatic.  Living in a multi-occupancy house, with several other families, Russell’s mother worked all hours of the day in her 2 jobs & Russell was often asked to help out.
Encouraged by his mother who believed strongly in education & self-development, Russell did really well at school, & against the odds, became one of the first ever Black students at Goldsmiths University. There he hung out with ‘many colourful people’ including the likes of Malcolm McClaren & when he became the first Black Vice-President of the National Student Union, Jack Straw. This was the start of an extraordinary life characterized by engagement with (touchpoints to some of) some of the most significant and tragic events affecting the Black community in the UK – The Lewisham riots (1977), the New Cross fire (1981), and the murder of Damilola Taylor (2000).
In his various positions as teacher, deputy-head, Lewisham councillor, & Deputy Director of Education in Southwark, Russell has championed the right of people to speak up for equality and justice. He was honored with an MBE (2009) for services to the community.
Russell considers one of his greatest achievements to be the role he has played in improving Black representation in politics and challenging racial discrimination and disadvantage ‘which still stains the character of our society’.
His lessons to the younger generation are “From humble origins you can make a difference and in order to do this, you have to be consistent and bloody minded – don’t take the easy route!”

The SE London BookFest has announced some of the headline authors who will be appearing at the inaugural event this autumn. Authors taking part include BBC Radio 4 presenter Emma Barnett and her husband Jeremy Weil (pictured above) and Kenny Imafidon, author of ‘That Peckham Boy’.
BBC radio presenter Barnett and Weil began photographing their favourite South London spots last year, initially just as a way to document special places and moments for their young family.
When they got home they printed out the photos for their son, now six, to scribble and scrawl on, a fun activity to keep him occupied and teach him about the local neighbourhood while the couple were also on maternity leave with their baby daughter.
Not only did he love colouring in his favourite places, but this simple activity gradually led to an ingenious idea - which grew into what is now a colouring book series, called Colour Your Streets.
The set now has over 30 titles, all inspired by a hyper-local neighbourhood, including Peckham, Dulwich and Lewisham.
Tumblr media
Kenny Imafidon will be interviewed about his memoir ‘That Peckham Boy’.
As well as being a successful author,  Imafidon is also an entrepreneur and social commentator and has worked on projects across the world with global businesses such as Vodafone and with international charities and large philanthropic foundations such as the Wellcome Trust and UNICEF UK. He is a trustee of several charities, including BBC Children in Need.
Alongside Lord Michael Hastings CBE, he is also the co-founder of My Brother's Keeper, a voluntary group that supports men (mainly serving long-term sentences) in 6 prisons across the UK. In 2022 he was featured in Forbes' annual 30 under 30 list for Social Impact.
Tumblr media
Local foodies Mike Davies (Frank’s Cafe, The Camberwell Arms) and The Flygerians are also taking part to help promote their debut cookbooks, which are both scheduled to come out later this year.
Tumblr media
Sisters Jo and Jess Edun opened The Flygerians restaurant in 2022 at Peckham Palms, a black female-led space supporting start-up businesses.
They made it into Vogue in a round-up of 'the best black-owned restaurants in London' and have since attracted plenty of media attention and made several TV appearances.
Co-founder Mark McGinlay said,
“We’ve had a great response from national publishers which means we’ll be able to showcase some fantastic local talent and some exciting new writers in November.
“The festival is currently running a crowdfunding campaign to cover some of the operating costs. Funds raised on Kickstarter will help go towards covering essential expenditure.
“There are various rewards available in return including exclusive invitations to the festival launch party. And obviously, the more money we are able to raise the bigger and better the festival will be!”
