Listen I stumbled upon Carpathian by @niffizzle and it’s so good. And I think I’ve seen like one person talk about it ever and for WHAT? Because it’s so good. Like plot? Good. Draco? Great. Hermione? Also great. And it DIDNT emotionally devastated me.

She cleared her throat before reaching into her bookbag and withdrawing one of the shiny, gold galleons. Malfoy raised a brow as she offered it to him.

“Thanks, Granger, but I think you might’ve heard, I’m just fine on money.”

Hermione rolled her eyes and thrust it into his hand, ignoring the warmth of his skin against hers. Flashbacks of last night threatened to escape their tightly fastened boxes, but she warded them off, knowing they had far too important issues to discuss for her to be distracted by Malfoy’s fingers. Warm and soft as they were.

“It’s charmed,” she said, refocusing.

“I didn’t pay it a compliment,” Malfoy deadpanned.

I had every. single. warning. available to me before reading "Secrets and Masks" (without ever being spoiled somehow). In fact, that's why I avoided it for years. I KNOW BETTER. I'm a weak little worm.

But sometimes you just wake up and choose violence. It's elite... of course. Genuinely one of the best I've ever read (I needed the best because "Green Light" has left me bereft for months).

Anyway, I'm on chapter 64 soaked in tears, completely aghast, asking how the hell this is happening to me rn.

An hour before dawn, Hermione lay in her sleeping bag with a charm to keep her warm. She’d lain reading beneath the stars for a few hours, a gentle buzz from whiskey earlier in the night still thrumming through her.

The willow grove stood beside a clear mountain lake that had yet to freeze over for the winter. She watched her dragon climb and dive, climb and dive with the stars at his back. His shimmering body rolled in a backflip as he cried joyously into the night. His wings fanned wide to slow him, catching the wind with a great billowing sound.

A burst of laughter erupted from her and echoed warmly through the trees. The dragon reeled around and dove straight for her as she laughed, holding up an open palm. He skimmed her fingers with his belly, then swirled around and landed hard on the ground. His footsteps drummed on the earth as he crept towards her, all gentleness and ease. Scales rippled over taut muscle. A purring hum rolled from his throat. Steam billowed from his nostrils.

“You’re in fine form tonight.” She flashed a playful grin.

The dragon slowly lowered beside her, head curling towards hers, tail wrapped around her sleeping bag, and a wing stretched over her protectively.

“I miss you. I want to talk to you and argue with you about what to do." She stroked his side. "I’m glad we’re here. It’s easier for us. More space, I suppose.”

The dragon gave a low, languid growl. Steam billowed up in a column from his face. She almost thought his mouth was curled up in a smirk, but then, wasn’t it always?
