if you could pick any type of episode that deviates from canon (ie. bottle, alternate universe, musical, origin story, your pick of documentary, etc.) — what would it be and what would you like to see? ♡
I've loved reading people's answers to this! (and I also had to look up "bottle episode" - I usually ran into "clip shows" before and ... eugh. BUT! Stargate SG-1 did what I guess was a bottle episode with Entity, and it was SO. FUCKING. GOOD. but I digress...)
GIRL GIMME THAT MUSICAL EPISODE.
🎶MUSIC🎶
🎶MUSIC🎶
🎶MUSIC🎶
Let Melissa Crystal O'Neil belt out those high notes. Get Mekia Cox strumming on a guitar. Give Nathan Fillion a comedy rap riff. The only one who can't sing is Eric Winter, and BRO, let's make him dance instead. (although I honestly think he'd get such a kick out of making Tim crack some rusty falsettos).
I could see so many ways for this to happen:
concussion
drug poisoning
dream
film set
theatre crime
podcast OMITB style
fucking STATION CHRISTMAS MUSICAL???
Come ONNNN, they had ZOMBIES for an entire episode! Doppelgangsters! This is a Dr Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog alum! Canada's Idol! JENNA DEWAN, they freaking love her, right??!?!
I know people bitch about the podcar eps and the true crime eps, but I absolutely adore those little sparkles of silliness. And to anyone that would complain about a musical episode, I have only one thing to say to you:

Rules ~
No hate of any kind will be tolerated, towards me or any of my followers. I'm too old for unnecessary drama and I will block people for it.
I am 29+, too old for petty shit, and I am here to write as a hobby.
This is a sideblog, I follow back from @ink-paper-tea
My mental health is a rollercoaster at best, I also work and have a fiancé so my activity here ranges from low to medium depending on the day.
I swear I'm not scary, I love making new friends so feel free to shoot me a message!
NSFW is allowed, however I will not ship/write NSFW with underage muses.
I don't have any triggers, but will tag Daddy kink and anything else that could cause squick solely for the comfort of my followers.
If we do write NSFW, I would appreciate an OOC conversation about limits and hard no's
I ship on chemistry and am open to a world of crossovers! Shoot me a DM or ask if you want to interact with any of my muses.
My DMs are always open for plotting and OOC

Beetlejuice - Broadway - March, 2019 (Preview) (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice), Sophia Anne Caruso (Lydia Deetz), Kerry Butler (Barbara Maitland), Rob McClure (Adam Maitland), Adam Dannheisser (Charles Deetz), Leslie Kritzer (Delia Deetz/Miss Argentina), Kelvin Moon Loh (Otho), Danny Rutigliano (Maxie Dean), Jill Abramovitz (Maxie Dean/Juno)
NOTES: Previews! This is probably my most obstructed bootleg ever. When I could get zooms they’re pretty (and I’m really trying my hardest for both Sophia and Kerry - “Dead Mom” looks GREAT and is really consistent), but I would probably consider this more like highlights with how many heads keep popping up. I don’t love it, but you can keep up with what is happening and see the WILD effects they have going on here...which is good enough for now. Video starts at “Ready, Set, Not Yet” and is complete from there. And honestly this video (and this show) is worth it just for “Dead Mom.”
Beetlejuice - Broadway - November, 2019 (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Will Blum (u/s Beetlejuice), Sophia Anne Caruso (Lydia Deetz), Kerry Butler (Barbara Maitland), David Josefsberg (Adam Maitland), Adam Dannheisser (Charles Deetz), Kim Sava (u/s Delia Deetz/Miss Argentina), Sean Montgomery (u/s Otho), Danny Rutigliano (Maxie Dean), Jill Abramovitz (Maxie Dean/Juno)
NOTES: A few heads show up briefly and a quick video drop after the first two songs. Covers from opening song to final applause, great shot.

NOTES: Full HD stageshot of this incredible show! Filmed from the rear orchestra without zooms, with a lot of head obstructions.

NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the incredible Presley Ryan as Lydia and David’s first week as Adam! Filmed from the left orchestra without obstructions with a mix of wides, mediums, and closeups. This is hands down the best video of the show to date. Starts about 3 minutes into performance (mid whole being dead thing).

NOTES: Most the first hour Act 1 is covered up or shot blind. When there’s something to see, it’s nice. The fidelity is cleaned up from the unfortunate dark ages of when it was shot, but the audio is a touch harsh.

NOTES: Nicely filmed from the balcony with a good balance of close-ups and full stage shots, although a little shaky at times. This is the first (and so far, only) video with Kiril Kulish in the role of Billy. Unfortunately about 15 minutes of the show is missing due to battery issues. What's missing is: Grandma's song "We Go Dancing", the scene between Dad and Tony, the beginning of "Deep Into The Ground", and the scene between Mrs. Wilkinson and Dad discussing Billy's ballet. It appears the filmer was trying to conserve battery power and was trying to focus on Billy's scenes. DVD has been enhanced with main menu and thumbnail images for access to the various songs. A-

They are the same capture it's just the DVD Menu shows the capture date as 3-11-2011 while the poster at the beginning says 3-7-2011 A nice capture of this hilarious original show. A very solid and funny cast. Nikki does a fantastic job acting and vocally. On wide shots there can be heads on the sides, but nothing that really obstructs the action. During Broadway previews, less than a month before the official premiere. So there are differences from the Cast Recording. Very nice video of the show however a bar can be visible in wide shots but it doesn't interfere with anything.

The Book of Mormon - Second National Tour - May 17, 2014 (SJ Bernly's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: David Larsen (Elder Price), Cody Jamison Strand (Elder Cunningham), Tallia Brinson (u/s Nabulungi), Pierce Cassedy (Elder McKinley), James Vincent Meredith (Mafala Hatimbi), Christopher Shyer (Mission President), David Aron Damane (General), Jeff Heimbrock (u/s Cunningham’s Dad)
NOTES: A fantastic capture of the second tour cast. This is the first known dvd of the 2NT, and the cast doesn’t disappoint. David and Cody are strong leads with great voices and comedic timing. Pierce is perfect as McKinley. Tallia also does a great job; she has a strong belt and does an endearing rendition of Sal Tlay Ka Siti. This is a very nice capture with no obstruction or blackouts, and only a bit of washout in superwide shots of high-contrast scenes. The video is very steady and the sound is excellent as usual. It’s filmed in 16:9 with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. Includes curtain call.
The Book of Mormon - Sweden - 2017 (Highlights) FORMAT: MKV (HD) CAST: Linus Wahlgren (Elder Price), Per Andersson (Elder Cunningham)
NOTES: Act 1 and first few minutes of Act 2 (until Spooky Mormon Hell Dream) only. Vertical; filmed from a mobile phone. Camera wanders a lot. Lots of washouts and no zooms but audio is clear quality.
The Book of Mormon - UK & Ireland Tour - 2019 (Rumpel's master) FORMAT: VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Kevin Douglas Clay (Elder Price), Connor Peirson (Elder Cunningham), Nicole-Lily Baisden (Nabulungi), Will Hawksworth (Elder McKinley), Ewen Cummins (Mafala Hatimbi), Thomas Vernal (General), David Brewis (Cunningham’s Dad), Tre Copeland-Williams (Doctor), Johnathan Tweedie (Prices Dad/Joseph Smith/Mission President), Cleopatra Isaac (Mrs Brown), Jemal Felix (Guard), Lukin Simmonds (Guard), Alex James-Hatton, David Brewis, Evan James, Fergal McGoff, George Crawford, Isaac Hesketh, Jed Berry
NOTES: One of the best videos of this show out there. Recorded from the right wing, doesn't miss any action. High quality video and excellent sound. Kevin is a very good Elder Price.

NOTES: Workshop all staged on barebones sets. Very interesting changes from the eventual Broadway version, including a much different “All American Prophet” (a squaredaney number called “The Bible is a Trilogy, Too”) This version is far less polished and focused but incredibly interesting to see for fans of the show.
The Boy Friend - US Tour - 2005 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Rick Faugno (Bobby Van Husen), Jessica Grové (Polly), Berthe Austin (Hortense), Scott Barnhardt (Alphonse), Andrew Breidis (Pierre), Jordan Cable (Marcel), Paul Carlin (Percival Browne), Andrea Chamberlain (Maisie), Margot de La Barre (Nancy), Darcy Pulliam (Lord Brockhurst), Drew Eschelman (Lord Brockhurst), Nancy Hess (Madame Dubonnet), Pamela Otterson (Monica), Sean Palmer (Tony), Krysta Rodriguez (Fay), Eric Santagata (Phillipe), Tom Souhrada (Gendarme), Kristien Wyatt (Dulcie)

Breakfast at Tiffany's - Broadway - March 9, 2013 (Lanelle's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Cory Michael Smith (Fred), Emilia Clarke (Holly)
NOTES: Shot in between a great deal of heads. Be warned, this production contains nudity during a bathtub scene. The production strays away much from the film that made it so popular.

I love this job more than I imagined I could. The day I stop giving it my all is the day I walk away.”
–John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), 2×14 “Casualties”
The quote above really encapsulates the draw of ABC’s police dramedy (that’s drama-comedy) The Rookie. The Nathan Fillion led series was ordered back in spring 2018, and aired its first season from 2018-2019. It’s currently in its second season, with a new episode airing this Sunday, April 26. In light of that – and because I’ve since managed to get 2 of my friends hooked on it – I decided I’d write up a few reasons as to why you should definitely check out this show…if you haven’t already!
Reason #1: The cast
(ABC/Andrew Eccles)
Yes, Nathan Fillion of ABC’s Castle headlines the series, but there’s a whole slew of cast members that carry the show just the same. Not to mention, you’ve probably seen them on other TV shows or films prior to their appearance on The Rookie.
CURRENT CAST (as of season 2–onward):
Nathan Fillion portrays John Nolan, the 45-year-old “rookie” who decided to pack up and move to LA to join the LAPD after a robbery at his local bank in Pennsylvania made him question his life decisions. You’ve probably seen him on: Castle, Firefly, Two Guys & a Girl, and/or Con Man.
Alyssa Diaz portrays Angela Lopez, one of three TOs (training officers) at the Mid-Wilshire Police Department in Los Angeles, California. You’ve probably seen her in: As the World Turns, Army Wives, The Nine Lives of Chloe King, and/or Ray Donovan.
Richard T. Jones portrays Sergeant Wade Grey, who is the immediate boss of the TOs, and is also responsible for their rookies, as well as the remainder of the police under his command at the station. You’ve probably seen him in: Judging Amy, Why Did I Get Married?/Why Did I Get Married Too?, and/or Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Titus Makin Jr. portrays Jackson West, the second in the trio of rookies. His father is the head of LAPD’s Internal Affairs, so he’s struggled some with having to prove himself outside of his father’s shadow. You’ve probably seen him in: Glee, Starcrossed, Pretty Little Liars, and/or The Path.
Melissa O’Neil portrays Lucy Chen, the 28-year-old hotshot who completes the trio of rookies in the LAPD. She decided to become a cop on a whim, but she loves it so much now, even though it’s the opposite of what her psychologist parents want her to do career-wise. You’ve probably seen her in/on: Canadian Idol, Dark Matter, and/or as a part of the Broadway musical Les Miserables.
Eric Winter portrays Tim Bradford, the second training officer under Sgt. Grey. He’s first seen as the no-nonsense type, but has since softened some during season 2. You’ve probably seen him in: The Mentalist, Witches of East End, The Ugly Truth, and/or Days of Our Lives.
Mekia Cox portrays Nyla Harper, a former undercover detective turned training officer. She’s quite a badass, and does whatever she can to excel at work, as it’ll earn points in her favor, because she’s fighting for custody of her daughter with her ex-husband. You’ve probably seen her in: 90210, Chicago Med, Secrets & Lies, and/or Once Upon a Time.
CURRENT RECURRING CAST (as of season 2–onward):
Image Credits: (ABC/Christopher Willard); (ABC/Richard Cartwright); and (ABC/Eric McCandless)
Ali Larter as Dr. Grace Sawyer, a former flame of John’s from his college days. She now works at Shaw Memorial Hospital, and while she and John reconnect as just friends first, they eventually ramp it up to dating.
Harold Perrineau as Detective Nick Armstrong, a new night detective that assists the LAPD with their case load after their regular shifts. He becomes involved more so when notorious serial killer Rosalind Dyer is brought to Grey’s station per a deal with the DA.
Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers, a lawyer that is currently dating Angela Lopez. The two have been living together since the start of season 2, and are now engaged as of episode 16.
Jasmine Matthews as Rachel Hall, a social worker who is one of Lucy’s best friends, and currently the girlfriend of Tim Bradford.
Daniel Lissing as Sterling Freeman, Jackson’s boyfriend who’s (ironically? meta-ly?) the star of a cop show, Hot Suspect.
Sarah Shahi as Jessica Russo, who is an FBI agent that was brought in to work a biological terror attack. She and John have a brief relationship, but break it off by episode 6 of season 2.
FORMER CAST (season 1):
Mercedes Mason portrayed Captain Zoe Andersen, who was the tough but fair captain of the LAPD. She believed Nolan’s life experience would be good for the department. She was killed in episode 16 by a gang member who made an attempt on Nolan’s life.
Afton Williamson portrayed Talia Bishop, Nolan’s former training officer. She came off as brash at first, but she did help John a lot during his first six months on the job. She left the LAPD for a job with ATF; Afton exited the series after season 1 ended.
FORMER RECURRING CAST (season 1):
Mircea Monroe as Isabel Bradford, Tim’s ex-wife. She was an undercover officer, but got hooked onto drugs which made her lose her job, and consequently, her husband. Tim tried to help her numerous times, but they’d been estranged for a year. She did finally get clean; but they decided it’d be best to separate, as Tim did not want to remind her of her old life.
Michael Beach as Commander Percy West, Jackson’s father who runs Internal Affairs for the LAPD. He and his son had their tough moments, but the two seemed to have reconciled in the season 1 finale after Jackson’s heroic efforts to stop a viral criminal.
*random fun fact: Mekia’s not the only one with a One Chicago tie-in. Alyssa Diaz actually worked with Chicago PD actor Jesse Lee Soffer on As the World Turns, and Michael Beach actually just finished a recurring role on Chicago PD as Darius Walker. Joelle Carter, who portrayed Shawn Christian’s character’s wife in the “Hawke” episode, has been on not one, but 3 One Chicago shows. Two of which portraying Laura Nagel (Chicago PD for 1 episode, and the spinoff Chicago Justice); she guested on Chicago Med this year.
Just wanted to toss that tidbit in there since quite a few fans of The Rookie have also been fans of the One Chicago franchise – at least that I’ve interacted with on social media!
Reason #2: The balance of dramatic cases with humorous banter between the officers
(ABC/Ron Batzdorff)
(ABC/Ron Batzdorff)
While The Rookie is no means a straight comedy, it’s also not technically a classic police procedural either. That’s a good thing, as the balance of the lighter comedic moments interspersed with the dramatic or sometimes gruesome cases is what makes the show so damn entertaining. Oh, and did I mention there are bloopers? Because there are bloopers, and they are hilarious. Click here & here to see those!!
Reason #3: The pairs (TOs & Rookies)
(ABC/Ron Batzdorff)
Ah yes, another reason why The Rookie works so well. The pairings of the training officers with their respective rookie is spot-on. In season 1 you had the new, upbeat, John Nolan paired with spunky Talia Bishop; and the two bounced off each other quite nicely. John’s new TO, Nyla Harper, is just as sassy, if not sassier than Talia, but in a way, she’s a little more grounded, as she has a young daughter to consider. That’s something they have in common, as John has a 20 year old son, Henry.
(ABC/Christopher Willard)
Another pair is Angela Lopez and Jackson West. Sure, you would think: oh, here are two ambitious, young, intelligent people, so they should feed off each other, right? Wrong…at least not at first. And that’s what was so refreshing about it. Was that you had the push-and-pull between them that made you wonder if West could really stick it out with Lopez. He eventually did get over his “stage fright” when gunfire was occurring, but it took time; and it was realistic to see Angela be tough, yet understanding with him when it came to things like that. Not to mention, Jackson’s helped her out on the relationship front a few times, as he’s listened to her issues with dating, and Wesley. He even was the one who put the idea of a proposal in her head when they were at a stakeout! The two are really jiving, and it’s fun to see!
(ABC/Christopher Willard)
Last but not least is the duo of Bradford and Chen. They couldn’t be more opposite from each other at first glance: you’ve got tough-as-nails Tim, who’s got to train positive, spirited Lucy. Sounds like a little bit of a clash, right? It seemed like it at first, as Tim was very tough on Lucy; but he’s since let down his guard a little, which has been cool to see. He’s balanced out Lucy’s energy, and the two have since been so in-sync, it’s a little crazy at times (but in the best way possible)!
Reason #4: The “ships” (couples) of the show
(ABC/Christopher Willard)
(ABC/Christopher Willard)
Ah yes, the part that a lot of fans (myself included!) love about our favorite TV shows: the couples that pair off in it! It’s also worth mentioning that fans usually get excited about “should be” couples aka: people that they think should be together/dating/a couple/etc.
As far as The Rookie goes, there are actually quite a few well-established couples on the show, especially in season 2! If you need or want a quick season 1 refresher: Tim was technically still married to his now ex-wife, Isabel; Jackson had a brief relationship with Gino; Angela and Wesley had begun dating; and yes, John & Lucy had a brief thing early on!
Now, for season 2, you’ve got: Jackson & Sterling; Tim & Rachel; Wesley & Angela; John & Grace (John was previously dating Jessica); aaaaaaand the fan-favorite should-be couple: Tim & Lucy. The final “couple” is actually how I got hooked onto The Rookie – thank you social media for all the #Chenford/#Tucy hashtags!!
Most everyone loves these relationships because they’re fun, endearing, dramatic, and sometimes even a little bit funny. It’s quite a nice counterbalance to all the death and destruction the LAPD encounters on the streets everyday, you know? Plus, who hasn’t found a couple on a show that they like a lot, right? It’s fun to interact with other fans about it too – which is part of the reason why “ships” are really effective.
Jackson and Sterling have that lovely push-and-pull dynamic, where, since Sterling’s a celebrity, and Jackson’s a cop, they had to keep it low-key at first. But now, since they’re technically out of the spotlight, they’re free to do as they please.
Tim and Rachel originally began as a bet, but, it turned into something more afterwards. Even though the two have had their little disagreements here and there, it’s been really interesting to see Tim open himself up to a new relationship after his wife in season 1. The fact that Rachel’s one of Lucy’s best friends is…beside the point. Although, for fans of Chenford/Tucy, it’s kind of comical, or ironic. I’m not quite sure which.
Speaking of Chenford, Tim & Lucy are the ones that fans have been clamoring to get together – even though technically, nothing can happen between the two until Lucy’s no longer a rookie (Tim’s her TO!). I’ll admit, I was originally intrigued by them because of their similarities to another “should-be” cop couple I ship: Upstead from Chicago PD; but, seeing how in-sync the partners are on The Rookie, I understand why everyone wants them to be more than that. I sure do!
Wesley and Angela have been steady since season 1, and his heartbreaking PTSD storyline in season 2 only brought them closer together, and showed just how strong of a relationship they have. Angela’s been super supportive, and Wesley’s always been confident in her abilities. They’re even the couple to beat in terms of major milestones: they’ve moved in together, and they’re engaged! YAY!
John and Grace were a little bit of a wildcard at the start, since they had a little bit of a history there. But, ever since they blossomed into friends, their transition into a relationship was relatively easy. It’s been nice to see John happy, and Grace seems to be really good for him right now.
Reason #5: The vibe behind the scenes
(ABC/Troy Harvey)
Last, but not least is the “vibe” behind the scenes of The Rookie. That includes the off-set antics the cast gets up to! It’s been really fun to scour social media and see their comments on not only The Rookie account, but on fan things too! The cast is also great about liking comments and posts that fans make, which is super-nice!
Not to mention, they’re just genuinely fun people – at least judging from their behind the scenes posts and on-set videos! From car sing-a-longs to random dance parties, there’s never a dull moment on The Rookie set! They’re such good sports. Not only does that camaraderie come through onscreen, but it helps the chemistry to translate nicely as well. Believability is part of what sells TV, and The Rookie has that skill down pat!
Bonus: Favorite Episodes So Far / Ones To Watch
Image Credits: (ABC/Richard Cartwright) and (ABC/Christopher Willard)
Note: this is just my own personal list, but if you have any more to add, feel free to comment! 🙂 PS: Season 2 is available for streaming on ABC.com or Hulu; season 1 is not, but there are a bevy of clips online (YouTube) which can help catch you up!
The Pilot, of course! 1×01, and then the kind-of-sort-of subsequent follow-up 1×02 “Crash Course”
1×04 “The Switch”
1×07 “The Ride Along” & 1×08 “Time of Death”
1×14 “Plain Clothes Day” and 1×15 “Manhunt”
1×19 “The Checklist” and 1×20 “Free Fall” (the season 1 finale)
2×01 “Impact” (picks up right after season 1 leaves off!)
2×03 “The Bet” and 2×04 “Warriors and Guardians” (which is Mekia’s debut!)
2×06 “Fallout” and 2×08 “Clean Cut”
2×10 “The Dark Side” and 2×11 “Day of Death” *you should definitely watch these back-to-back, as 2×10 serves as the midseason finale; 2×11 is the midseason premiere*
2×12 “Now and Then”; 2×16 “The Overnight”; and 2×17 “Control”
That’s all for me for now! 5 (or 6, if you count the dramatic episodes!) reasons to watch The Rookie! You can catch all-new episodes on ABC, Sunday nights at 10/9 c! Be sure you’re following the show on Twitter and/or Instagram so you can see fun behind the scenes content, not to mention live-tweet during tomorrow’s all-new episode! Hope ya’ll liked this post!

Christmas 2019: Day 9 - The Christmas Hope (2009)
On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...
Nine months of gestation!
On reflection, I can see that the past two entries on this years list have been a bit of a downer. Far too centered in talk of mental illness, depression and the like. Let’s perk things up a bit with...*checks notes*...shit.
Right now millions of people across the planet (or galaxy as it were) are enjoying/not enjoying the end to a very different cinematic trilogy. Me? I have a long overdue wrap up to attend to that started many moons ago thanks to a certain little film about a certain pair of shoes based on a certain song. Quite why I’m doing this know I don’t know. I can only suspect that I’ve seen one too many reflective social media posts now that we’re reaching both the end of a year and decade, perhaps I’m subconsciously wanted to sort out unfinished business, hence looking at stuff like this, Christmas Story Live and the Christmas Carol Musical.
The movie starts with Traci here recording herself singing a song before commenting ‘American Idol here I come!’. The camera pans all through her house looking at pictures of her daughter, soppy picture frames with ‘I LOVE YOU MOMMY’ written on them and no sign of a boyfriend/husband so she has the basis for a feel good story if she does make it on. Might need to jazz it up somewhere along the line if we’re to really tug at the audiences heartstrings but it’s a start. This actress would go on to play Vicky in the live action Fairly Odd Parents movies so that’s another tie in to a previous entry. Apparently there’s a third one of those and I’m not sure if I’ve seen it.
She literally runs into a couple on her way to work, knocking their teddy bear to the floor which they graciously give to her when she mentions that her daughter would love it. This is Nathan and Megan from The Christmas Blessing, sadly both recast. Actually, maybe that’s a good thing. Not sure I’d be able to take NPH seriously after all those H&K movies recently. Nathan is a bit more of a ginger this time around, rather than the dirty blonde thing NPH has going on. Megan is expecting and they have about a bajillion teddies so they don’t mind passing one along. Hey, someone probably got you that as a gift. Be grateful!
Meanwhile, the police arrest a drug dealer and find she has a malnourished baby in her apartment so in swoop child services to save the day.
Mr. T feels your pain.
I hope you weren’t getting too attached to Traci by the way because about fifteen minutes into the film, shortly after making a heartfelt promise to her daughter that they were going to decorate the Christmas tree once she got home from work and that she had a very special present for her this year, she promptly gets run over.
Have you ever crossed the road, and looked the wrong way? A car's nearly on you? So what do you do? Something very silly; you freeze. Your life doesn't flash before you, cause you're too fucking scared to think, you just freeze and pull a stupid face.
I know I shouldn’t be surprised given this is one of those melodramatic, Hallmark movies and this whole series has been overly morbid up to this point but it still kinda threw me. Here we are all nice and happy, Traci’s going about her day and there’s a nice Christian, soft rock Christmas ballad playing in the background and then BOOM, SUV to the face.
Then it cuts to her daughter, Emily, going through the Christmas decorations before settling on a angel which she ponders on for a moment before looking to the heavens as she’s having this moment of intuition.
But when child services pop their head in again to take her away, they find that all their usual helpers are fully booked for the holidays so what else can they do? One of the workers, Patricia, has no choice but to take her home. It’s not by the book but, damnit, it’s Christmas and we’re going to give this kid some degree of stability. By sheer coincidence, Patricia happens to be the mother of one Sean Addision who was the kid that died following a car accident the start of Christmas Blessing which caused Nathan to have his Dr Cox crisis of confidence moment. These movies are just ridiculous to how everyone's lives are so intertwined.
Like, up to this point, we met Traci who then bumped into Nathan and Megan, before going to work and having a young, troubled teen skip out on his bill but Patricia was in at the same time and tipped really generously to make up for it. That same kid then pretty much steals her bag following accident and also knew Sean who was mentoring him in one of those Big Brother mentoring programs.
Patricia’s husband, Mark, is played by James Remar, he of The Warriors fame and, more pertinent to this blog, he was in the Miracle on 34th Street remake and one of the segments in the Tales from the Darkside movie. Theirs is a very frosty relationship currently owing to the death of Sean, there’s no sense of chemistry between these two and I’m surprised they’re actually as close in age as they are, Remar only 4 years older. Feels like there’s more of like a 10-20 year gap. He gets on very well with Emily though, they have this instant rapport whilst Patricia is more distant which is understandable. She obviously has to keep things professional as she can’t get too attached to these kids and doesn’t want them getting attached to her, plus there’s probably ongoing issues from Sean’s death, maybe she’s not prepared to slip back into that motherly role again. Which you can tell by that dinner she serves; rolls of wafer thin ham, cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks and celery? That’s just what all the kids want.
At least she’ll read Emily a bedtime story, ‘I’ll Love You Forever’ which documents a mother who sings to her song that she’ll love him forever, even when he becomes a rebellious teenager who thinks it’s lame for her to do that. This leads to the very strange visual of him cradiling her in his arms on a rocking chair and singing it to her when she’s old and frail, a mirror image of how she first sang to him when he was a baby. This really hits Patricia in the feels as she felt distant from Sean as he seemed closer to his father, wanting to impress him by picking the sports and classes he thought his father wanted him to take. She even seems to partly blame her husband for their sons death as he switched around his work schedule to come home early for Christmas, which in turn led to Sean coming home early too. If he’d just come home on the day he intended this never would have happened! That seems grossly unfair. Even when she passed along a family heirloom in the form of her fathers watch, he was unimpressed and even managed to break it whilst horsing around with a friend in his room.
The massively tangled web of these characters comes into play again when Megan is going through some things and finds an old Christmas gift which sends Nathan into some sort of Nam flashback. Turns out Sean was holding it as he was wheeled into the hospital and Nathan had taken it upon himself to make sure it found its way to its intended destination but he just forgot about it over the years. I actually went back to check this and ,yeah, that is in the previous movie. I had this whole thing pegged as just a series of independent stories with loose connections throughout but no, apparently they had whole plot points planned out in advance.
Nathan and Patricia do interact several times as she takes the crack baby to the hospital to be checked up. There’s this strange level of frustration akin to An American Tail where Nathan keeps getting little flashbacks in his head but he’s never quite able to connect the dots.
But of course he eventually does and the present turns out to be, say it with me now, the broken watch! Perhaps more meaningful though is the accompanying note which reveals Sean intended to study social work at college because he wanted to help kids just like his mom. This seems to serve as a form of closure for her but I feel like you could already start drawing that sort of conclusion. I mean, the guy was already in that Big Brother program so you were clearly already having some sort of influence on him.
Strike two of the big overly emotional finale comes when it’s suggested Emily puts the angel atop the tree which promptly makes her bolt out of the room. Everyone is left thinking they’ve upset her but she comes back clutching a picture which she wedges onto the tree, a picture not of her mother as I had suspected but of Sean. She says he is her angel and she feels like whenever she’s felt all alone, he’s been there to help here. Awww.
The big showstopper though is the troubled kid finally coming good and, after realising who everyone is in this story, returns Traci’s bag to the Addison home. Inside was her camera and on that camera was the video from the very start of the movie. Turns out she wrote that song as a Christmas gift for Emily.
Though, I feel the writers fell short of a grand slam here. Near the end, Nathan shares the story with Megan about giving the gift to Sean’s parents and how it gave him his own little bit of closure after how much Sean’s death affected him back then. Megan goes into labour shortly afterwards and I was fully expecting them to decide to call the baby Sean but no such luck.
Christmas Blessing was lacking a little bit in the big emotional ending so it feels like this one is making up for that and then some. It’s not as cheesy as that song from Christmas Shoes but still delivers that overly sentimental feeling. Again, it’s something I am loathed to admit but it got to me a little bit. This whole movie has that same morbid energy as the other two but in a slightly different way, the first two felt like you spent the entire movie watching people who were on deaths door before something happened at the end to soften the blow. Here they just give you the death right up front and everyone is left to cope with the aftermath and reflect on how deal with it. It’s like an encapsulation of everything that Nathan has gone through over these movies, facing death in his personal and professional life but coming to terms with it.
You know what’s bullshit though? No sign of the eponymous Christmas Shoes anywhere. They’re even in the box of stuff that Megan finds the old Christmas present in. How can you make this your big conclusion and not bring them back? You brought them back the last one, you couldn’t have Megan tag along and give them to Emily at the end as some sort of passing of the torch? It was her destiny, Nathan got them for his dead mother, Charlie got them for his dead mother, those shoes have been robbed of their purpose in life.

And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. Meroe geographically was known to the Greeks as Ethiopia, according to the Greek historian Herodotus who lived during the 5th century BC Meroe had the reputation of being the mother city of the Ethiopians. Candice the Queen of Ethiopia has also been identified with the Kandake’s of the Kingdom of Kush whilst it was centered at the city of Meroe because of the King Taharqa the Kingdom of Kush whilst it was previously centered at Napata in Nubia prior to Meroe Taharqa in the bible is mentioned as being the King of Ethiopia having assisted Hezekiah King of Judah in conflict with the Assyrians. And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. 2 Kings 19:9-10/Isaiah 37:9-10

And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea. March Tsar Nicholas II resigns.
April 26 'Mayor Fred W. Moflman arrived in the city on a trip from St. Louis. In New Orleans he was met by Mayor Behrman and the New Orleans Board of Trade. For months the Farmers of Louisiana were frightened out of their wits over the everyday migration of Negroes from great farming centers of the State. They wrote to the papers, they appealed to the Governor, the Mayor and the Legislature and the Board of Trade to stop the Negroes going away, but up to the 26th of April nothing was done to stop the people excepting the Railway Companies promising to use certain restraint on the rush of people obtaining passages on the trains by Railway orders sent to them from the North. At this time Mayor Mollman arrived and the Farmers and Board of Trade met him and asked his help in discouraging the Negroes from going North and especially to East St. Louis. In an interview given out to the New Orleans press he said that the Negroes from the South were reaching St. Louis at the rate of 2,000 per week, and that they were creating a problem there. He said that some of the largest industries in the country were established in East St. Louis and there were strikes for the last few months. He believed the labor conditions in East St. Louis were responsible for the number of Negro laborers going to that city. When the strikes started, he said, United States District Judge Wright issued an injunction restraining the strikers from intimidating the laborers who took their places. This order prevented uprisings and riots. "Conditions are very bad in East St. Louis," he said, "because many plants are suffering for the want of labor. However, our city is growing and we have a population of 85,000 persons. During 1916 we gained 1,600 in population." His interview did not make pleasant reading for the Farmers and others interested in labor in New Orleans and Louisiana so that the very next day he appeared at the Board of Trade where he met the Farmers and others and in discussing the labor exodus with them, he promised that he would do all he could to discourage Negroes from Louisiana going into East St. Louis as the city did not want them. His interview on the first day was an encouragement to the Negroes to go to East St. Louis, as there was work for them, owing to the inability of the various plants to get labor. On the second day when he was approached he said East St. Louis did not want the Negroes, and he then promised to do all in his power to prevent them going there. His remarks to the people whom he met were published under big headlines in the News papers, so that the Negroes could read that they were not wanted in East St. Louis, but that did not deter the blackmen of Louisiana who were looking for better opportunities in the land of their birth going about the country looking for better conditions than the South offered with lynching and Jim Crowism. The Negroes still continued their migration North. The Mayor of East St. Louis returned to the city after making his promise to the Farmers, Board of Trade and others who were interested in Negro labor.'
April 27 Friday Mayor Mollman appeals before the Board of Trade where he makes his statement of promise
April Lenin returns to Russia from exile in Switzerland and later also flees to Finland.
The United States enter WWI.
May 4
May 5 The New Orleans Board of trade elects Mr. M. J. Sanders its president, and Mr. W. P. Ross as delegates to attend a transportation conference at St. Louis to be held on May 8-9.
May 8-9 The transportation conference is held at St. Louis at which several prominent men interested in the labor condition of the South were present as messrs.
May 28 East St. Louis. White employees of the Aluminium Ore Company vote for labor strike, the Company employ hundreds of blacks, 3, 000 white men begin rioting.
Crowds of white men after leaving the city council stopped street cars and dragged Negroes off and beat them.
May 29 Night 3 Negroes and 2 white men are shot. An investigation of the affair resulted in the finding that labor agents had induced Negroes to come from the South.
Governor Frank Orren Lowden summonds the National Guard subdue to riot.
'One thing I do no[w?] know; the first riot started on May 28 after a conference of labor leaders with Mayor Mollman. On that day, May 28, crowds of white men after leaving the City Council stopped street cars and dragged Negroes off and beat them. Then the night following three Negroes and two white men were shot. An investigation of the affair resulted in the finding that labor agents had induced Negroes to come from the South. I can hardly see the relevance of such a report with the dragging of men from cars and shooting them. The City authorities did nothing to demonstrate to the unreasonable labor leaders that they would be firmly dealt with should they maltreat and kill black men. No threat was offered to these men because Mayor Mollman himself had promised to do all he could to drive the Negroes out of East St. Louis, and to instill fear in the hearts of the people in the South so as to prevent them coming North. On the 29th of May, a day after the first disturbance, and when three Negro men had been killed, Mayor Mollman sent a dispatch to Governor Pleasant of Louisiana advising the Negroes of Louisiana to remain away from East St. Louis. This news item from the "Call" of May 31 which I will read will speak for itself.
May Garvey returns to New York from his speaking tour.
Harrison founds the Liberty League and Voice newspaper.

HUBERT H. HARRISON MR. CHANDLER OWENS REV. DR. CLAYTON POWELL other prominent ministers and laymen.
June 15 The United States congress pass the Espionage Act of 1917.
July Race riot in East Saint Louis, Illinois, on the east bank of the Mississippi River across from St. Louis, Missouri.
The East St. Louis Riot, or rather massacre, of Monday [July] 2nd, will go down in history as one of the bloodiest outrages against mankind for which any class of people could be held guilty. (Hear! hear.) This is no time for fine words, but a time to lift one's voice against the savagery of a people who claim to be the dispensers of democracy. (cheers) I do not know what special meaning the people who slaughtered the Negroes of East. St. Louis have for democracy of which they are the custodians, but I do know that it has no literal meaning for me as used and applied by these same lawless people. (hear! hear!). America, that has been ringing the bells of the world, proclaiming to the nations and the peoples thereof that she has democracy to give to all and sundry, America that has denounced Germany for the deportations of the Belgians into Germany, America that has arraigned Turkey at the bar of public opinion and public justice against the massacres of the Armenians, has herself no satisfaction to give 12,000,000 of her own citizens except the satisfaction of a farcical inquiry that will end where it begun, over the brutal murder of men, women and children for no other reason than that they are black people seeking an industrial chance in a country that they have laboured for three hundred years to make great. (cheers)'. Garvey “The conspiracy of the East St. Louis Riots” July 8.
White men in a Ford drive by and fire shots at blacks, an hour later a journalist and two police men also drive by in a Ford, blacks open fire on car killing one officer, thousand of whites begin rioting.
An example of what the guardsmen encountered, and themselves enjoyed, was the beating of colored women by white girls. This sort of thing was common. It resulted in the death of several Negro women. Six girls, according to the report pursued a colored girl around the main railway station. A mob formed behind the girls who were screaming frantic epithets at the terrified black girl. "Send them back to Africa." "Kill them all." "Lynch them," shouted the young amazons. Suddenly the crowd swept from the trail of the girl. A yell then arose. "There is one." It was a Negro walking on the railroad track. Before he realized his peril he was killed. Half a dozen pistols cracked and the man dropped without a chance to run. (groans) Two white girls, neither more than 17 years old, the report said, were cheered when they dragged a colored girl from a street car, removed her slippers and beat senseless with the sharp wooden heels. Some reports said black women were stripped by white women for the amusement of the crowd. (Cries of shame!). Garvey “The conspiracy of the East St. Louis Riots” July 8.
The National Guard do nothing.
Congressional Investigating Committee reports 39 blacks and 9 whites dead, although more accurately hundreds more are believed to have died, 6 thousand blacks are left homeless after their neighborhood burned.

The Southern Railway Company warehouse is burned with 100 car loads of merchandise leaving them at an estimated loss of $525, 000. White owned theatre $100, 000 as well as 44 freight cars and 312 houses, with a concluded estimate of $400, 000 property damage.
July 4 The Anti Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society demands that the postwar reconstruction of Africa recognize the interests and wishes of the native inhabitants; the resolution is forwarded to the representatives of the Allied and Neutral powers.
July 8 Garvey makes his “The conspiracy of the East St. Louis Riots” speech at Lafayette Hall in Harlem, this speech is also printed and distributed in pamphlet form.
July 28 Du Bois and NAACP organise and lead the “Silent March” of 10,000 Negro New Yorkers down Fifth Avenue to protest the East St. Louis race riot, Du Bois travels to St. Louis to report on the riots and receives commission in army.
July Public debate intensifies in the West Indies regarding the denial if military commissions due to color prejudice, increasing apathy and resistance to military recruitment in the region.
August 3 The Committee on Rules and House of Representatives 65th Congress issue hearing for the riots at St. Clair Country court, 10 white defendants and 24 others, Dentist Dr.LeRoy Bundy is charged with inciting riot.
August 10 Lenin arrives at Helsinki where he hides away in safe houses belonging to Bolshevik sympathisers.

The 3 Ps Assessment: Parties, Political Interest Groups, and PACs
1. Include:
Republicans: Republicans support stem cell research, but not embryonic stem cell research. They believe embryonic stem cell research destroys human life.
B. I don’t agree with their position because I feel like the embryonic stem cell research has just as much benefit as the adult stem cell research.
Democrats: Democrats believe in the importance of stem cell research. The Obama administration lifted federal restrictions on stem cell research.
B. I agree with their position because I believe that the government should fund stem cell research.
Libertarians: I was not able to find anything about embryonic stem cell research on their website. However, I was able to find one Libertarian named Gary Johnson and he was against federal funding and believed it should be up to private laboratories to operate the research. I think they don’t have their opinion stated on their website because they don’t believe the government should fund that kind of research.
B. I don’t agree with their views because I believe the federal government should fund embryonic stem cell research.
Green Party: I was not able to find out embryonic stem cell research on their website, but I did find one Green Party member’s view. Dr. Jill Stein believes that the federal government should fund embryonic stem cell research.
B. I agree with this view because like I said before I believe embryonic stem cell research should be funded by the federal government.
Peace and Freedom Party: I was not able to find anything on their stance on embryonic stem cell research. I think they didn’t include their opinion because embryonic stem cell research is not a very popular or well-known topic.
B. I can’t say if I agree or disagree with this party because I don’t know their views.
1c. I most identify with the Democratic Party. I don’t think that’s surprising. I would vote for that presidential candidate if he or she supported embryonic stem cell research.
2. Identify one national interest group:
2a. Interest group name- 314 Action
2b.A brief statement assessing the position/perspective of the interest group-These members and grassroots supporters are committed to advocating for more STEM-trained candidates for public office. They are the largest resource for helping scientists run for office.
2c. Visit the interest group’s website.-
-This group’s goal is to “Provide a voice for the STEM community on social issues”
- They also want to “Elect more leaders to the U.S. Senate, House, State Executive, and Legislative offices who come from STEM backgrounds”
-When Shaughnessy Naughton (The President of 314Action.org) ran for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 8th District she attracted a lot of attention. Although she did not win, she said she learned that there were not enough scientist in Congress and many were denying basic, scientific facts.
- Harmony Knutson is the Director of Advocacy and she leads the state and federal government relations and advances 314 Action’s policies.
- 314 Action is keeping a close eye on members of Congress who are anti-science.
-”Under the Scope” is the program that will scrutinize the actions of anti-science politicians.
2d. Describe one piece of legislation, specific policy action, or candidate this group desires or endorses
- 314 Action endorses TJ Cox. Cox is a candidate for US Congress, California’s 21st District. Over the last six years, his focus has been to develop community health clinics and healthcare jobs. Cox is also a registered professional engineer.
2e. Where is this interest group located? Are there any local meetings you could attend? When?
-314 Action is located in Washington, DC. There are no local meetings.
2f. Are there volunteer opportunities? If so, what are they?
- There are opportunities in California, but they do not list what they are unless you sign up. They have volunteer opportunities in 35 states and the DC.
2g. Identify additional developments you find interesting from the website/group
-I found it interesting that they have t-shirts for sale and one of the t-shirts have Albert Einstien’s face on it. They also have organizations on over 75 college campuses.
3. State interest group
3a. Interest group name- BIOCOM
3b.A brief statement assessing the position/perspective of the interest group- BIOCOM is the strongest public voice for science companies in California. They advocate for developments of STEM education and strive to improve human conditions.
3c. Visit the interest group’s website.-
- In their website, it stated, “Biocom is urging the House and the Senate to increase funding for the NIH in FY2018 and FY2019.”
- In their website, it stated, “Biocom is urging Congress to reauthorize the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA)”
-BIOCOM has an office in Washington DC
-They are fighting Congress and telling them to repeal the Medical Device Tax
-BIOCOM has a Legislative Committee to discuss local, state and federal issues
-BIOCOM advocates for the science industry in California
3d. Describe one piece of legislation, specific policy action, or candidate this group desires or endorses
-BIOCOM endorses Nathan Fletcher for San Diego County 4th District Supervisorial Seat on September 12, 2018. Nathan has a record for working with science. He served two terms in the California State Assembly.
3e. Where is this interest group located? Are there any local meetings you could attend? When?
- They are located in San Diego, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Tokyo, and the Bay Area. If I was a BIOCOM member then I could attend the “Breakfast with Biocom: The Power of Education - Translating New Technologies for the Clinic” meeting. It is located in San Francisco on November 14, 8:30 a.m.
3f. Are there volunteer opportunities? If so, what are they?
-Yes, I could volunteer for the “STEM in your backyard program”.
3g. Identify additional developments you find interesting from the website/group
- I found that this organization is involved in multiple countries. For example, Tokyo, China, United Kingdom, France, and Australia.
4. Compare the two interest groups
Which one seems more organized? More successful? Who is their target audience? Supporters?
- In my opinion, 314 Action seemed more organized. 314 Action also seemed to fit my issue better. Their website was easier to navigate and they seem to have clearer goals about what they want to accomplish. 314 Action does seem more successful because they work directly with candidates trying to get into office. It is also stated that in 2018 there are more science candidates running for office than ever before, so that means 314 Action’s message is being heard. This group’s sole focus is to elect more pro-science politicians. I think their target audience is anyone who believes in science and wants to see more science in Congress and leadership roles. 314 Action has grassroots supporters. BIOCOM does not seem as organized because their website was not easy to navigate and their message wasn’t as clear. Although BIOCOM seems very successful, they aren’t as successful as 314 Action. I think the target audience for BIOCOM is mainly for people in California, but also expands to people around the world. I think this organization is also intended for anyone who is passionate about STEM education and the spread of knowledge about science. The supporters and partners for BIOCOM are California Biotechnology Foundation and Adva Med and more.

- In 2004 they raised $26,400 and they spent $26,700. Their beginning cash on hand was $1,336 and in the end their cash on hand was $1,550.
5d. How much of their budget is spent on: Republicans? Democrats?
-Their budget in 2002 spent on Republicans was $0 and $500 for Democrats.
5e. Who are some of their donors? How does this reflect the interests of the PAC?
-The majority of donors were from New York. Some include: Rocca Zimmerman (NY), Gary Susser (FL), Susan Talve (MO), and Frank Cocozzelli (NY) donated $2730 from seven separate donations. This means a lot of the donors were private. This means the PAC donations weren’t as high as some PAC’s that got major corporation’s donations.
