At most it spoils the first chapter of the first Truly Devious book but i think no spoilers but just in case be warned.
Dottie Epstein's death is nothing ill ever get over in the OG Truly Devious Trilogy. And that is because she was only 14 and she was only up in the dome/alcohol prohibition room to read one of her favorite Sherlock Holmes books in peace.
She originally left her school to go to Ellingham because she didn't fit in because of how smart she was. And when she got there most other students, from the few scenes in the book, didn't really care for her because Dottie seemed strange/because Dottie was a lower class than the other students. But Dottie, not being bothered by this took to hiding around the school to read her books or to find interesting things left there by party guests that Albert Ellingham would invite.
Dottie Epstein also showed a high amount of morality/knowing what was right and wrong. She said to herself that she had to return the items that she picked up, one item being a fancy lighter. She also knew that she shouldn't be breaking into areas/going into areas like the dome which contained a lot of alcohol and was most likely not meant for any of the students to see. She says she would have left Mr. Ellingham told her so.
Her high amount of morality and intelligence was part of the reason she underlined a part in the book she read in her final moments before her death. She did this in the hopes that someone, Mr. Ellingham, would be able to figure out who here killer was. She did this when she realized the man who killed her wasn't just setting up for a game, but planning out something sinister. In here final moments she wanted to make sure whatever happened was solved.
And you know what, it makes me sad. Because Dottie's family didn't technically get an answer back then. Dottie's Uncle didn't know what happened to his niece.
I gotta wonder what Dottie would have focused her studies on because when the school first opened, it didn't seem to have the focused major effect like the current timeline did. Would she have been a writer? a doctor? a scientist? or even a detective?
I love characters that we never get more info on and i really want someone to write something about it on ao3.

Very early on in this movie, hero Christian Grey gives da chick the standard romantic leading man speech about how he's bad news--a loner, Dottie, a rebel--and she should still clear of him. At this point, they've gone out to get coffee one time and he's saved her from a careening bike messenger. I know it must be exciting to tell a lady that she should stay away from your twisted mind for her own feminine good, but dude, save it for at least the second date.
This came to Netflix, so I figured I might as well give a shot. It's a failure, obviously, but it's an interesting failure. There are talented people both on screen and behind the scenes, and it looks like a movie, but all their efforts amount to putting lipstick on a pig. Would it be unfairly inside-baseball to repeat the reports of a troubled production, with the author insisting on an adaptation that was too faithful for its own good?
Try not to do a shot every time heroine Anastasia Steele* extravagantly bites her lower lip in lust.
(how come Dakota Johnson's character name in this is way more silly than the name of the literal superhero she played?)
To be fair to the movie, I've seen a ton of waggish assholes like, well, me, declare that this movie is a camp classic of unintended hilarity and guys, c'mon. There's no way they didn't intend "What are buttplugs?" as a laughline.
In fact, with Dakota Johnson's sitcom star comedic timing and winsome charm, watching this movie is a bit like finding a coke-begotten relic of the 80s where some madman paired Meg Ryan and Rutger Hauer (it doesn't help that, as "Mr. Grey," they cast an actor that plays serial killers about as often as heartthrobs).
I'm making this story sound interesting, but it's not able to succeed on its own terms, as whenever it tries to get serious, the drama runs headlong into a howler of a line that must be verboten from the books. "I'm fifty shades of fucked up!" Christian groans at one point.
"I don't make love. I fuck. Hard," is another line that even Sir Michael Caine couldn't get into working order.
It's a shame, because there's no real reason a modern-day gothic romance can't work. Sure, there's no real plot to the thing besides Ana and Christian's doomed/not-so-doomed romance, but there are worse foundations for a movie than a relationship where the guy wants to hurt his lady love as much as romance her. It's fucked up, but imagine what a Cronenberg or Verhoeven could do with the assignment. Well, full frontal, probably.
(The compromise to keep Jamie Dornan from spending a third of the movie displaying the status of his circumcision is that he does most every sex scene in a worn pair of jeans. I probably should've been too stunned by his abs to wonder at this, but dude's a billionaire. Is he doing yardwork in those jeans? Home repair? Or have they gotten all the holes in them purely from screwing? Man, that guy does fuck. Hard.)
You know, given that bondage is a pretty common fetish, you'd think Christian Grey--an ubersexy twenty-something billionaire--would be able to find a woman who's into, y'know, all that--especially since his wildest antics are a little whipping and possible anal fisting.
I know there'd be no story if he didn't immediately fall in love with Anastasia Steele (snicker) and if she wasn't only putting up with the bondage to get the package deal. Still, that is a pretty contrived starting point, isn't it? At least Team Edward has the excuse of that whole 'my own personal brand of heroin' thing.

who are your favourite original characters in TODCL? <3
Hello anon! As in ones I made up and not characters original to MOTA?
I answered this one a while ago, but it's definitely Auntie Jeannie. (I've prev. called her Jeannie Egan - and forgot Egan is the married name, and she's John's mum's sister. So, it's Jeannie Johnson."
She and John are very similar in terms of their attitude and snark, their humour and the way they push back. They look similar too with their wide smiles, freckles and curly hair (fan cast as Stockard Channing a la Rizzo from Grease).
Mama Egan has a lot of these traits too, of course. Speaking of, I love Dottie Egan. When I first wrote her she was a bit flat, so I've enjoyed fleshing her out, her problems with her temper, her relationship with her sister, her (wilful?) blindness towards John's activity and and some could argue her neglect of John (once he went off the rails after his father left)?
I'm looking forward to exploring more of Dottie really soon :)
Honestly there are way more OCs in this than I intended. Who's your fave, anon?
Thanks for the ask!

chapter six of clandestine up now 💓
et un petit extract:
Beattie Johnson was a wicked woman. Her hair was always perfectly done, her nails manicured and pristine, her lips a gorgeous shade of red that left blushed marks on Rupert's olive skin when they lay on his cheeks. Her hobbies seemed to include: sitting on Rupert's lap, laughing at Rupert's jokes, asking Rupert to apply sunscreen to her tanned skin, touching Rupert's shoulders and - last but very much not least, prowling into Rupert's room at night so loudly that Dottie could hear every little grunt.

Marbled Monday
It's time for a touch of marbling to keep this Monday going! This marbling was found in our Shakespeare collection. The book is volume 18 of Samuel Johnson and George Steevens's The Plays of William Shakespeare: In Twenty-One Volumes, an annotated edition of Shakespeare's plays. This is a sixth edition revised by Isaac Reed that was published in 1813 and called the first variorum edition. Oddly enough, today, September 18, is the anniversary of Samuel Johnson's birthday in 1709, so happy birthday to Samuel Johnson!
The marbling on the covers is a swirled sort of loose, dotty leaf-esque pattern in muted green, mauve, and black, rather than a tight traditional pattern like peacock/bouquet. It has some zig-zag movement to it in places, and I'd love to see what a larger sheet looked like, but from what I can tell there's not really a uniform pattern to the marbling. Interestingly, the marbling on the covers does not match the marbling on the fore-edges, which is orange and blue, and just one of several things that leads me to believe this is not an original binding.
Another of those things is the wormholes present in the first and last pages of the book that are not continued in the endsheets, which are of a heavy, laid cardstock that seems too clean and too heavy to have been used at the time the text was printed. There is also no damage to the covers themselves, making me think they are newer than the text block. Overall, the color combinations on the book are interesting, with the bright red spine, green and purple and orange and blue marbling, and I must admit aren't my favorite.

Pride & Prejudice - Steggy AU
Coming soon* to an AO3 near you
Born as the second daughter of the Carter family with no rank and no fortune, Peggy has spent her entire life being accosted by her mother to marry well - and marry soon.
The arrival of one egregiously wealthy Mr. James Barnes sends her mother in a particularly frenetic tizzy, determined to make introductions in hopes of setting one of her daughters up with him. However, it’s Mr. Barnes’ mysteriously dour friend that catches Peggy’s attention. She might even go as far to call him handsome - if only his own pride hadn’t mortified her own.
Created for Steggy Week 2023 Day 4: Family and Friends.
I chose this particular story for this prompt because the source material is so family centred!
Thank you @steggyfanevents you’ve created another monster that I now have to write.
Starring:
Peggy Carter as Elizabeth Bennet
Steve Rogers as Fitzwilliam Darcy
James “Bucky” Barnes as Charles Bingley
Natasha Romanoff as Jane Bennet
Amanda Carter as Mrs. Bennet
Harrison Carter as Mr. Bennet
Jemma Simmons as Mary Bennet
Daisy Johnson as Lydia Bennet
Kora as Catherine “Kitty” Bennet
Rose Roberts as Charlotte Lucas
Fred Wells as George Wickham
Daniel Sousa as Mr. Collins
Miriam Fry as Lady Catherine de Bourgh
Dottie Underwood as Miss Bingley
Angie Martinelli as Georgiana Darcy
Colonel and Mrs. Phillips as Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner
*soon is a relative term based on the social construct we call time, that is dependent on varying factors, including but not limited to: muse’s cooperation, time and energy to write, and the writer’s overall potential to be easily distracted by other WIP’s and ideas, as is evidenced by this new creation here.
#steggy#steggyweek23#pride and prejudice au#don't hate me for the pic of steve here chris evans has not been in any period pieces and has never worn anything even remotely period#I TRIED#I SCOURED THE INTERNET#BUT ALAS#also some of these roles were harder to cast than i thought#particularly the younger bennet sisters

Albertina Walker and Dottie Rambo performing “I Go to the Rock”. In case there is any confusion they are not singing about Dwayne Johnson. _______________________ I Go to the Rock Singwriter: Dottie Rambo
Where do I go, when there's nobody else to turn to? Who do I talk to, when nobody wants to listen? Who do I lean on, when there's no foundation stable? I go to the Rock, I know He's able, I go to the Rock.
I go to the Rock for my salvation, I go to the stone that the builders rejected, I run to the mountain and the mountain stands by me; When the Earth all around me is sinking sand, On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand, When I need a shelter, when I need a friend, I go to the Rock.
Where do I hide, 'til the storms have all passed over? Who do I run to, when the winds of sorrow threaten? Is there a refuge in the time of tribulation? When my soul needs consolation, I go to the Rock.
I go to the Rock for my salvation, I go to the stone that the builders rejected, I run to the mountain and the mountain stands by me; When the Earth all around me is sinking sand, On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand, When I need a shelter, when I need a friend, I go to the Rock.
I go to the Rock for my salvation, I go to the stone that the builders rejected, I run to the mountain and the mountain stands by me; When the Earth all around me is sinking sand, On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand, When I need a shelter, when I need a friend, I go to the Rock.
When I need a friend, I need a little joy, When my body needs Him, yeah, I need to know for, Go ahead to this Church, I need a little shelter, I go to my Savior, run away to the Church, Going to the Rock, O I need to the Rock, Hear me now, I going to the Rock! Say it now!

In the 23rd century, inhabitants of a domed city freely experience all of life’s pleasures — but no one is allowed to live past 30. Citizens can try for a chance at being “renewed” in a civic ceremony on their 30th birthday. Escape is the only other option. Credits: TheMovieDb. At least for the two “Runners’ who have escaped out of their bubble world. It is fraught with twists and turns in a post Peak-Oil world, where society has finally found a solution to the resources of the planet. The ‘chosen’ few, however have one little catch, their lives have a unique way of ending, until these two discover a new way, and a Lie that was being told to all of the citizens. (Warning for younger viewers, there are scenes where (At the time,) it was considered risque to show people jumping into a freshwater pond and going skinny dipping).
