Jk I'm doing my favorite movies I watched last year today too.

The Zone of Interest - depressingly timely and a staggering work that urges us to examine complicity and complacency and how evil can be and is often disturbingly mundane as it is extreme. The sound. The sound. If you watch this movie, you'll know what I mean.

Anatomy of a Fall - 2023 was the year of Sandra Hüller. What do you mean she did this and knocked everyone out with her performance in The Zone of Interest?! And I thought everyone was joking about the dog, but best actor for real. I don't know how Messi did it (love that his name is Messi). Anyway, I love well-done courtroom dramas so of course I'd love this, and not to diminish this to things that the Internet latched onto, but playing "P.I.M.P." on blast for a movie like this and Sandra's monologue...truly iconic moves that'll be remembered forever.

All of Us Strangers - FAVORITE MOVIE OF THE YEAR. ONE OF MY FAVORITES OF MY LIFE. It's one of those movies that I desperately wanted to watch in theaters, but I'm relieved beyond measure that my plans fell through because I was a disgusting, soppy, sobbing mess and I'm glad I was alone. Because phew. But what a heartbreaking but healing film, so full of tender love. I can't talk about it more without tearing up. The acting, the cinematography, the soundtrack, the writing, the everything. It's a movie that could have fallen flat in less experienced and assured hands, but wow. Please watch this movie.

Monster - This isn't what I thought it would be, but that's more than all right. I love movies that play with perspective, and this just made you have more answers—and more questions—the more you watched it until you understand what's happening and you can see how these two boys are so misunderstood and let down by the people around them. Beautiful and gentle with powerful performances from two very young actors I want to cup in the palms of my hands.

Perfect Days - Gonna be real with you. I scoffed when this movie gaining traction because of course it would, but then I watched it and I shut up immediately because it's not a twee "omg let's be grateful about the little things in life; the world is too noisy and simplicity is king. Btw, this is going to be a super Japanese movie" movie. I was absorbed by the routine and through that routine, I discovered such small wonders that made me think about life and idk guys, that ending will stick with me forever. It's my type of ending. I don't think people who see the protagonist as completely at peace or completely isolated understood the movie.

My Cousin Vinny - I wasn't sure whether to put this or another movie because I liked it enough but didn't find it riveting (and it really felt dated in the beginning), and then it picked up and well, I love Vinny and oh my god, Marisa Tomei. Marisa! I didn't dare to blink any time she showed up in a scene because she was that good. ALSO, 1. I'm a dork for accurate representation of legal accuracy (lol...I was going to go into law once upon a time) especially when it's done in a fun way like this because it can be absurd and so goddamn stupid sometimes and 2. I can't believe Vinny's supposed to be dyslexic and they cut that out of the movie when that explains so much and makes you see the movie differently.

Honorable mentions: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (veryyyy adorable and I liked it a lot, but I went in expecting to love it and I didn't) and Furiosa (boring, but George's visuals alone save this from my "I'm annoyed this is forgettable" pile. I was surprised by Chris too. More acting and more roles like this, please. I so rarely forget he's Chris, but I forgot this time). Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin! isn't strong enough to add to this list, but I loveeeeeee Peanuts and this was beautifully made. Go watch it! It's short.

Hm...I said it was a good movie year, but looking at my list of movies I watched in 2024, half of it is comprised of movies that I thought were forgettable or I'm actually mad were really bad (it'd be fun to offload all my salt in a post, but probably a controversial take for a bunch of them so maybe it's not wise lsdkjfksalfjas. But I'm a hater so maybe I'll write the post).
