A/N: 4,985 words
I want to give credit to @mybullshitsensesaretingling for giving me the idea for the Kobayashi Maru test. They made an excellent work about it and I fell in love with it! It’s called Records and it’s a Jim Kirk x Reader work! It was beautiful! Go read it!!
===========================================
Three Years Later
Getting everything ready for Jim Kirk's third try at the Kobayashi Maru test was long. Everything had to be re-done, and we had to pick a certain amount of people to work with him. And then the board has to get everybody to overview it ready. It's a long process.
So far, he has failed it twice but isn't taking no for an answer. He's tried it both ways, withdrawing from the mission to save his crew or enter the neutral zone, and try to rescue the vessel at risk of violating the treaties and starting a fight.
Kudos to him for not taking no for an answer, but in this case, he really should. It's not that I don't believe in him it's just that he won't get the right answer to the test. No one does.
Spock wanted it to be a no-win scenario, but I told him that he shouldn't make it that way. I suggested that we have one way for the cadets to win; they just have to use their brains and think before acting.
My scenario is to hail the Klingons before entering their space and informing them of the situation. Telling them that no harm or war is meant and that we just needed to save one of our ships. The ship's safe passage can be granted by asking the Klingons for an escort to the ship and then out of their space.
So far, no one has thought of asking the Klingons for help. Maybe I put too much faith in people... I don't know. But what I do know is that Jim is most likely never going to get the answer. He wants to win, but he won't. I can tell just based on how he handled both tests that he won't get this win. He might get it if he gets put into the situation in real life, but it's hard to know.
But you never know he could have figured it out; who knows...
Spock thought it was logical enough to use and would still be hard for someone to think up. No one would think about this, but he said any cadet that did think of this would be very efficient in their Starfleet career.
Since no one has thought of this yet - which I'm not holding against anyone- it has made it easier to get to know everyone's personality and how they stand as a person. What they could and how they act during the test says a lot about a person.
This is definitely at the back of everyone's mind - if it's even there - but it's a big fifty-fifty between everything people pick.
The PADD in my hand had the final tweaks to the test that is going to be happening tomorrow. Of course, though, every time I try to finish something, I always get pulled away from it.
A shadow cast over me, making me sigh as I look up to see Kirk and McCoy. I lay my PADD on my lap before acknowledging the two men above me.
"Hello, boys. What can I do for ya?" I give a smile, making them both smile back.
"You know I think you are so smart, right?" Jim said, taking a seat next to me while throwing his arm over my shoulder. Bones only sighed while rolling his eyes and sitting on my other side.
I giggle before answering him, "Yes, I do. You tell me almost every day. But..."
"But what?" Jim smirks, trying to play it cool.
"But... you need something."
"What, no." He says, making me raise one of my eyebrows, but I don't lose the smile, "Can't I just compliment a beautiful girl?"
"In this case, no. Because I know you need something just based on how your acting, tone of voice, and body language. It tells me a lot, you know. You are holding yourself carelessly and easy but are a little tense as you await my answer. And also, your Kobayashi Maru test is tomorrow, which I will be present at. So what you want is for me to tell you the secret to getting the right answer and winning the test."
Both men had their mouths hanging open and a look of shock gracing their faces.
"How... How did you..." Bones stutters his question during his shock. Jim is also stuck in his surprise, and his eyes aren't leaving my face.
"I'm a therapist and psychologist. I've been trained to read and understand people within a certain amount of time, and this isn't the first time Jim has come asking for stuff. After three years, you start to pick up on individual traits and customs of a person." I say nonchalantly, waving my hand.
"You're good." Bones complimented with a smile, "Do you have sessions with people? Like now with cadets?"
"Why? Do you need to talk about something?" I ask, turning my body towards the man, making Jim's arm fall off my shoulder.
"It's not that important or big; I just would like to have someone to talk to." He answers truthfully, making me smile and nod.
"But, you have me, bones." Jim jumps in over my shoulder. "I want someone that has training and is a professional, like Hailey." Jim looks somewhat defeated but nods in understanding.
"If you want, we can set up a time and day later today if you would like?" I suggest, "I'm free most of the time because I don't have that many appointments at the moment."
Bones nods while smiling and sighing in relief. His smile made me smile more prominent than before, but I turn to Jim after him being quiet for so long. He was looking down at the ground in thought with his face scrunched up.
"Jim?" He looks up, "You okay?" He nods and then smirks while sitting up straighter, staring into my eyes.
'What is up with this dude?'
"Oh, hush," I whisper, but the boys heard me.
"I didn't say anything yet," Jim says with furrowed eyebrows.
"Oh, no, not... um, n-not you." I stutter out, not knowing how to explain myself.
'Smooth, Hailey, just smooth.'
Shut up!
"Okay," Jim says slowly before his face lit up with a smirk again.
I know where this is going.
"So... about our conversation before. I need what you said after you analyzed me."
I knew it.
I sigh while shifting forward and looking at the blue-eyed man. He looks at me with hopeful eyes, and I want to give him the answer I do...but I just can't. I shake my head, and he gives me this look of why.
"But why?" Puppy dog eyes... Fuck...
"Because you need to use that big brain of yours and think of it yourself... and Spock would be pissed at me." I sigh quietly before grabbing his hand, "Jim, I want to give you the answer, I really do. But I have faith that you can pass; you just need to think outside of the box." I smile and squeeze his hand before letting go and gathering my things, getting up. "This has been fun, boys, but I have places to be and people to see." I nod and then leave.
(Back with Jim and Bones)
"I told you she wouldn't tell you, man." Bones grumbles, "I guess your charm doesn't work on everybody." He then gets up and starts walking away.
"Hey!" Jim shouts, getting up and running after him, "At least she grabbed my hand; I call that a win!"
=========================================
Next Day - Kobayashi Maru Test
"We're receiving a distress signal from the USS Kobayashi Maru. The ship has lost power and is stranded. Starfleet Command has ordered us to rescue them." Cadet Uhura says, swiveling in her chair.
"Starfleet Command has ordered us to rescue them, Captain," Jim says while in the Captain's chair. The alarm starts going off, and everyone gets ready at their stations.
I was currently standing in front of the room's window when Jim looked up at me and smirks. I smirk back and cross my arms, observing. With how he is acting, maybe he did figure it out.
"Two Klingon vessels have entered the neutral zone and are locking weapons on us." Bones says at his station.
"That's okay," Jim replies, making my brows furrow.
"That's okay?" Bones asks.
"Yeah, don't worry about it," Jim says in a confident - more cocky - tone.
"Did he say, don't worry about it?" One of the instructors asked, looking through the glass.
"Is he not taking the simulation seriously?" The other instructor also asks.
"Let's just keep watching and see," I say while rubbing my chin in thought. What is going through his mind? What is he doing?
"Three more Klingon warbirds decloaking and targeting our ship. I don't suppose this is a problem, either." Bones says, looking over at Jim in his chair.
"They're firing, Captain." A cadet yells.
"Alert medical bay to prepare to receive all crew members from the damaged ship," Jim says with a smirk.
"And how do you expect us to rescue them when we're surrounded by Klingons, Captain," Uhura replies
"Alert medical," Jim says again.
"Our ship is being hit. Shields at sixty percent." Bones informs, but all Jim says is that he understands.
"What are you doing, Kirk?" I whisper to myself, making some people next to me look over, "What's going through your head?" My hand doesn't leave my chin and mouth as I think.
"Well, should we, I don't know, fire back?" Bones asked, making Jim grab an apple out of his pocket and eat it, saying no. Bones grumbles to himself before the power seems to go out but comes back on after a minute. I look around the room at everyone, wondering what happened.
"What's this? What's going on?" An instructor asks, looking around.
"Hmm... arm photons, prepare to fire on the Klingon warbirds," Kirk says after taking another bite of his apple.
"Yes, sir," A cadet says, doing what he says.
"Jim, their shields are still up." Bones says in a are you kidding me tone.
"Are they?" Jim asks, biting into his apple again.
"No. They're not," McCoy says in confusion.
"Fire on all enemy ships. One photon each should do it, so don't
waste ammunition." Jim commands, making a cadet nod and lock their target and fires. All Klingon ships were destroyed. How.
"Begin rescue of the stranded crew. So, we've managed to eliminate all enemy ships, no one on board was injured, and the successful rescue of the Kobayashi Maru crew is underway." Jim starts walking around, taking a bite of the apple and then turning to the windows, looking up at me and the instructors, smirking.
"How the hell did that kid beat your test?" An instructor asks both Spock and me. I lightly shook my head, not knowing what to say. "He didn't even do it your way, Commander Pike."
"I do not know," Spock and I say at the same time. But I think I knew what he did.
'He cheated.'
"Yes." Sighing, "Yes, he did."
Jim. This is not what I meant by thinking outside of the box...
=======================================
"This session has been called to resolve a troubling matter. James T. Kirk, step forward. " Jim stands up hesitantly and walks to the podium looking at Admiral Barnett, "Cadet Kirk, evidence has been submitted to this council, suggesting that you violated the ethical code of conduct pursuant to Regulation One-Seven point three of the Starfleet Code. Is there anything you care to say before we begin, Sir?"
Sitting in on Jim's hearing with the rest of the cadets and instructors was not how you envisioned my afternoon. After everything that happened with the Kobayashi Maru test, Spock was - to say the least - pissed. He didn't show it, but I knew it was easy to understand him after three years of closely working together. Not entirely, but well enough.
Getting back to my original point, Spock looked into everything, and I mean everything, to figure out how Jim won. Of course, though, I was right in the fact that he cheated. This boy took my advice to literally - he went too much out of the box...
'Both of us.'
"Yes, both. Now shut up, please." I whisper, trying not to attract any attention to myself.
"Yes, I believe I have the right to face my accuser directly," Jim says, making Spock rise from his seat next to mine. Jim looks over at him and notices me sitting, his eyes lock with mine. I give him a somewhat reassuring smile and nod, but I could tell he was still nervous.
"Step forward, please. This is Commander Spock. He's one of our most distinguished graduates. He's programmed, along with Commander Hailey Pike's help, the Kobayashi Maru exam for the last four years. Commander?" Admiral Barnett says to everyone and then Spock.
"Cadet Kirk, you somehow managed to install and activate a subroutine to the programming code, thereby changing the conditions of the test," Spock says to Jim into the mic.
"Your point being?" Jim asks the man at the other podium.
"In academic vernacular, you cheated." Admiral Barnett states.
"Let me ask you something, I think we all know the answer to. The test itself is a cheat, isn't it? You programmed it to be unwinnable." Jim scoffs.
"Your argument precludes the possibility of a no-win scenario," Spock concludes.
"I don't believe in no-win scenarios." Jim states.
"Then, not only did you violate the rules, but you also failed to understand the principle lesson," Spock says.
"Please, enlighten me," Growled Jim.
"You of all people should know, Cadet Kirk. A Captain cannot cheat death." Spock states, looking at Jim
"I of all people," Jim asks, glaring lightly at the Vulcan.
"Your father, Lieutenant George Kirk, assumed command of his
vessel before being killed in action, did he not?" Spock asks, making Jim tense where he stood.
Oh god.
'This isn't good.'
"No, it's not." I sigh quietly, leaning back in my seat.
"I don't think you like the fact that I beat your test?" Jim says, getting defensive and glaring.
"Furthermore, you have failed to divine the purpose of the test," Spock states.
"Enlighten me again," Jim growled... again.
"The purpose is to experience fear. Fear in the face of certain death. To accept that fear and maintain control of oneself and one's crew. This is a quality expected in every Starfleet Captain." Spock concludes, staring at Jim.
At this point, the air was dense as hell, and nobody dared to say a word fearing what would happen. The two males at the podiums were glaring hard with no blinking at all. It was a little creepy if I was honest.
And Aide, though, comes in interpreting everything as he hands Admiral Barnett something. After reading what it said, he stands and addresses everyone.
"We've received a distress call from Vulcan. With our primary fleet engaged in the Laurentian system, I hereby order all cadets to report to Hangar One immediately. Dismissed."
Everyone stood up and started heading out - including me, as I chased after Spock. After getting through the crowd of people, I finally got to the Vulcan; he was looking at his PADD. We both then rush to Hangar One together.
Just then, it hit me. Cyrus, my older brother, was on Vulcan. He wanted to learn more about his Vulcan heritage, so he went to stay with Spock's family. Oh, god, please be okay!
=========================================
I got everything I needed for this mission before getting on the Shuttle to the ships. At this time, my father became the Captain of Starfleet's new flagship. The ship's christening was supposed to be different, but at least she will get her maiden voyage.
All the cadets were getting assigned to ship's and getting on the Shuttles. After grabbing a few more things, I rushing to the Shuttle for the Enterprise when I saw Bones holding up a slouching Jim. The man at the door wasn't letting them through, so I stepped in.
"Is there a problem here?" I ask the Starfleet officer, to which he looks at me and straightens up before answering.
"Commander, Cadet Kirk is not cleared for duty aboard the Enterprise."
Jim then grunts, which makes me look over at him. He was sweating and not looking good. I didn't have time for this, so I just nod and say, "It's okay. They are with me."
"Yes, commander." The officer says, letting us on. I grab Jim's other arm and help them. Bones takes a seat next to a window, and we put Jim next to him. While sitting Jim down, Bones said thanks, and Jim wasn't letting go of me. After finally getting him to let go, I sit next to them and wait for the Shuttle to start.
While we were flying towards the Spacedock and Ships, Jim told Bones that he would throw up on him. Bones shut him up and made him look out the window. They were looking at the Spacedock, and all the ships docked. Then the Enterprise came into view. Everyone was looking out a window at the ship.
Once docked on the ship, everyone got out. Bones and I were speeding down a big docking hallway holding up Jim.
"We need to get changed. Mainly Jim," I state, making Jim look over at me and then at Bones. "I don't feel right. I think I'm leaking." Jim whines, making me shake my head. Just then, we saw Spock down the way, "Shit, Spock. Uh... This way!" I push Jim and Bones to the side and down a different hallway to get to Medbay.
Once there, Jim asked where we were making bones answer. Jim then looks over at me and smiles, "You are so beautiful."
I smile while sitting him on a bed, "Thank you, Jim."
"My mouth is itchy. Is that normal?" Jim then asks, making me look at the doctor in question.
"Well, those symptoms won't last long. I'm going to give you a mild sedative." Bones says, getting everything he needs.
"Agh, I wish I didn't know you." He tells bones before looking at me with pleading eyes. I put my hand on his shoulder and smile, making him calm down.
"Don't be such an infant." Bones sighs before jabbing the sedative in his neck. Jim grunted and brought his shoulders up, "Aggh... how long is it supposed to..." He then falls unconscious.
"Unbelievable." Bones mutters before closing the curtain around us.
"I'm going to get changed and let the Captain know where I am," I tell Bones before exiting the curtain to get ready.
After changing into my blue dress and informing my dad, I got back to Bones to see that Jim was still sedated. The bridge's message started playing on the wall screens; the boy informed us about a lightning storm in space. It didn't make sense, but you never know what could happen nowadays.
"Lightning Storm!" Jim jumps from his laying position, looking frantic. He was looking around at everything while I had my hands on his neck and shoulders.
"Uh, Jim, you're awake. How do you feel?" Bones asks, coming up to us.
"Ah.. uh..." Jim grunts, with his face contorting.
"Good god, man!" Bones yells while looking down at Jim's lap. I look down and notice that his hands have become extremely swollen, making me jump back.
"What?" Jim asks before looking down, "Ah!" raising his hands to look at them closer. "What the hell's this?!"
"Bones! What's happening to Jim!" I yell while grabbing his swollen hands and examining them. What the hell did he do to Jim?!
'That's not good.'
No shit.
'Rude!'
"Reaction to the vaccine. Dammit! Nurse Chapel, I need fifty cc's of cortisone." Bones says while running across the room.
"Yes, sir," Nurse Chapel says, going to grab what she needs.
Jim jumps off the bed, pushing other people and me out of his way. He ran over to a monitor screen and going through the video from moments before. I ran up to him with Bones trailing me before scanning Jim, but the man in question grabbed Bones' face and yelled, we had to stop the ship. He then took off out of the Med-Bay, making Bones and me dumbfounded.
"Shit."
===
Jim was running down the hallway while Bones and I were chasing after him. The doctor was rooting through his med bag, trying to grab things he needed.
"Jim! I'm not kidding. We need to keep your heart rate down!" Bones yells after catching up to him. I was panting lightly, but it wasn't bad. Jim then ran up to a monitor, "Computer, locate crew member Uhura!"
"I haven't seen a reaction this severe since med school." Bones says while Jim starts running again.
"Well, can you fix it?" I ask, running after Jim with the doctor in tow.
"We're flying into a trap!" Jim yells at us, stopping once we got to a different room.
"Dammit, Jim, standstill." Bones says while giving Jim another hypo making him scrunch his neck and yell for it to stop. Jim starts running again and pushing people out of the way. But he finally stopped when he found who he was looking for
He stopped once he found who he was looking for.
"Kirk, what are you doing here?" Uhura asks while standing up from her seat.
"The transmission from the Klingon prison planet, what exactly was-" Jim starts, but Uhura starts yelling about his swollen hands. Jim shakes his head while bones start scanning him again.
"It-it-it... look, who is responsible for the Klingon attack? Was the ship Romul..." Jim says but then starts slurring his words.
"Was the ship what?" Uhura asks confused
"What's happening to my mouth?" Jim slurs again, asking Bones.
"You got numb tongue?" Bones asks over Jims shoulder
"Numb tongue!" Both Jim and I yell at the doctor
"I can fix that!" Bones states before leaving briefly to grab what he needed.
"Was the ship what?" Uhura asks again. Now I'm confused and want to know what Jim was trying to say. Jim mumbles his response, but we didn't understand, making us ask again.
"Romulan," Jim mumbles but clearer now.
"Romulan?" I confirm.
"Yeah," Jim muttered excitedly.
"Yes," Uhura says
"Yes!" Jim yells excited before getting a hypo to the neck, "Ahh... dammit!"
==========================================
"Captain!" Jim yells, running onto the bridge with Bones, Uhura, and I behind him, calling for him.
"Jim, no!" Bones says, running up next to him.
"Captain Pike, we have to stop the ship!" Jim yells as my father stands up, and I make it next to the two men.
"Kirk, how the hell did you get on board the Enterprise!" Dad demands facing the man in question.
"Captain, this man's under the influence of a severe reaction of a Melvaran flea vaccine, completely-"
"Bones, Bones..."
"...delusional. I take full responsibility."
"Vulcan is not experiencing a natural disaster. It's being attacked by Romulans." Jim states before someone could talk over him.
"Romulans? Cadet Kirk, I think you've had enough attention for one day. McCoy, take him back to medical; we'll have words later." My father commands the two men before turning away, but Jim wasn't having any of that.
"Aye, Captain." Bones says, trying to grab Jim but was too late.
"Look, sir, that same anomaly..." Jim runs up to my father and tries again.
"Mister Kirk..." My father tries before Spock runs up to them. "Mister Kirk is not cleared to be aboard this vessel."
"Look, I get it; you're a great orator. I'd love to do it again with you too." Jim says, annoyed.
"I can remove the Cadet-" Spock starts to my father but gets cut off.
"Try it! This Cadet is trying to save the bridge." Jim finishes by yelling.
"By recommending a full stop mid-warp during a rescue mission?" Spock states with a sharp tone.
"It's not a rescue mission, listen, it's an attack," Jim speaks loudly.
"Based on what facts?" Spock speaks up.
"Ladies, ladies, please, you're both pretty. But please shut up." I snap, making everyone shut up and look at me, "Dad, please listen to what Kirk has to say," I nod to Jim, "Go ahead," He smiles at me and nods back.
"That same anomaly, a lightning storm in space that we saw today, also occurred on the day of my birth. Before, a Romulan ship attacked the USS Kelvin." Before turning back to my father, Jim says, "You know that Sir, I read your dissertation. That ship, which had formidable and advanced weaponry, was never seen or heard from again. The Kelvin attack took place on the edge of Klingon space, and at twenty-three hundred hours last night, there was an attack. Forty-seven Klingon warbirds were destroyed by a Romulan, Sir. It was reported that the Romulans were in one ship, one massive ship."
"And you know of this Klingon attack how?" My father asks Jim shaking his head.
"Sir, I intercepted and translated the message myself. Kirk's report is accurate." Uhura states, coming forward.
"We're warping into a trap, Sir. The Romulans are waiting for us, I promise you that." Jim says to finalize his point. My father then turns to Spock to hear his view and what he thinks we should do. "The Cadet's logic is sound. And Lieutenant Uhura is unmatched in xenolinguistics; we would be wise to accept her conclusion."
They then look over at me for my point, "I think we should listen to Kirk and Uhura." My father nods his head before I say my final piece, "Dad, Cyrus is also on Vulcan."
My father's face drops, and his eyes widen while tensing and nodding his head, "Scan Vulcan space, check for any transmissions in Romulan."
"Sir, I'm not sure I can distinguish the Romulan language from Vulcan." The male lieutenant says to the Captain.
My father then walks over to Uhura and asks, "What about you? Do you speak Romulan, Cadet?"
"Uhura. All three dialects, Sir." Uhura answers
"Uhura, relieve the lieutenant." My father directs after nodding.
Uhura looked surprised for a moment but recovers, "Yes, Sir."
"Hannity, hail the USS Truman." My father orders turning around.
"All the other ships are out of warp, Sir, and have arrived at Vulcan, but we seemed to have lost all contact," Hannity said, looking over at us.
"Sir, I pick up no Romulan transmission or transmission of any kind in the area," Uhura states, making us look over at her and then back at each other.
"They're being attacked," I say, making Jim look over at me and nod in agreement.
"Shields up, red alert." My father commands while sitting back in his chair. Jim and I walked behind the Captain's chair and held onto the railing. I look over at him and see he was already looking at me; I nod, making him nod back. We both look forward again when the pilot started the countdown until we get to Vulcan.
"Arrival in Vulcan in five seconds... four... three... two..." Once we dropped out of warp, we saw ship debris floating everywhere. The ship shakes, making me fall into Jim, to which he caught me and didn't let go.
